Next CUUSOO set: 21103 Back to the Future™ Time Machine
TheLegoDr replied to Blakstone's topic in LEGO Licensed
The official release date is August 1st, but lots of LEGO stores have already put them on the shelves. My local store already sold out the first day they put it out. I think on the 18th. -
I don't see why the license wouldn't last year long. Super heroes sells well. Everything is SH these days.

Great build. I really like the water effect. And clever use of the POTC scabbard as reins. I considered doing something like that before, but never tried it out. I'm glad it works. I may have to use it in the future. I had a different set-up for my reins which also works.

Very neat and clever way to do a roof. I've seen so many great techniques on this website, must be why I frequent it daily. Thanks for sharing your how-to. Some people shy away from that to stay unique. I think you've done a great job with this though. Keep up the great work. I can't wait to see more.

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 11 Rumours & Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to CM4Sci's topic in Special LEGO Themes
That's the thing about a lot of these figures..the accessories sell the figure as much as the print/style of figure. Plus, the accessories in some cases can go for as much as the figure, so it can be easier to just buy multiples of the figure, if you want multiples of their accessories. Sure, you are stuck with extra accessory-less figures, but it works out in the end. I haven't looked lately, but the Forest Maiden's shield was going for over $3 on bricklink early on, which is more than the figure was by itself...odd I thought. So it's almost worth it to buy one of each "just so you have it" (anyone guess the quote) in case you want an accessory later on. That's the only reason I buy the figures I don't particularly like. -
I am lost in everything MCU other than what has been put out. I know nothing of these other characters everyone mentions. I guess it is good for me since I won't be upset if they just butcher a storyline because I have nothing invested into it. But I can understand the joy of knowing about these backstories and discussing it on the webs. I didn't care much for First Class, but I do love X-Men and hopefully they can do better with them in the next installments. (and hoping for sets involving X-Men figures).

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 11 Rumours & Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to CM4Sci's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Wow looking at Rosie, we probably could have received another white ruff piece from the Actor to get more mileage out of that piece. I don't mind the female robot, but this is a bit over the top. The only thing I can think is maybe this was one of Olivia's inventions from the Friends line. It would fit in there just fine. I will still pick up a few, like always, but she could have been better. -
LEGO® CUUSOO 空想 - Turn your model wishes into reality
TheLegoDr replied to CopMike's topic in General LEGO Discussion
That's the thing, there has to be a market somewhere. I am considered a pop culture nerd by many, but if it wasn't for CUUSOO, I never would have heard of Minecraft or this FTL. So, all in all CUUSOO isn't for me. But I'm sure there are plenty of others out there that haven't heard of some things either. If I see something on the shelf that is appealing, great. But if I haven't heard of it and it is sitting on the shelf, I will probably skip over it, unless I can use it as a parts pack, like the first Minecraft set. I have no intention to playing Minecraft, but I like small pieces, so it worked out for me even though I don't care for the official theme. The same can be said for future CUUSOO wins. If the theme isn't appealing, but the set is, they still have a sold unit. -
Next CUUSOO set: 21103 Back to the Future™ Time Machine
TheLegoDr replied to Blakstone's topic in LEGO Licensed
Someone in a nearby LUG posted pictures of them putting the original slope on the car. He stated he didn't modify it at all, just put that on and it fit just fine. He was really pleased with how it looked. I thought it still looked a bit steep for how the car is supposed to be, but the stepped tile approach doesn't look the best either. Either way, it seems like it can be done pretty easily. The nearby LEGO store also sold out within the first day they had them on the shelf. Granted, they only got 15 in. So I think this will be a hot seller, especially with the holiday season coming up later in the year. -
Nicely done. My only qualm is still the size of it. Put him next to a regular standing figure and he will be taller than him, when traditionally in a wheelchair you are sitting down and thus shorter than everyone. But with that aside, the wheelchair looks great. Very fitting for Charles Xavier. Keep up the great work!

I hadn't considered using it as a winter village set. I can definitely see that vibe coming from it. I noticed the snow and I like the sparing use of it in this set. It isn't overwhelming, but still gives the impression that there is snow present in the scene. Good call, rogueang - I hadn't considered that. He did forget his handkercheif in the movie, so a change of clothes would be harder to come by. Although, they could have given him a different face print like they did with the same Frodo in the Elrond set. He at least got a new angry face, which is nice.

Another great piece of work from the Modular master. Sixteen wides are definitely your forte. I love the color scheme. The colors do work well together, but sand blue is just a beautiful color anyway. I really like the white curved bricks used by the front entryway. That really caught my eye. I think the thing that sets you apart is not only great exteriors, but fantastic interiors also. Very clean, very detailed. For your sun, they do make the 2x2 tile with a new mold now. It has a round circle underneath in the center (similar to how the dish is) instead of the old cross pattern. Not every tile has that new mold, but I've seen it has been coming out in newer sets, so maybe down the road that might be a change to make (if desired). Otherwise, the dish works well there. Captures the sunset very well. I really like the use of the mirror sticker. Very creative. I think my daughter might have that set..if not, I know I need to get that sticker sheet. The ship painting with the tiles around it looks great. I hadn't considered doing that before, but it doesn't look bulky at all. I love the rear deck a lot. Very fitting and good use of space. I like the idea of the balcony too. I would keep the upper roof going across a plate at the same level, but then have a pole (or stack of 1x1 rounds or something) in the corner to keep it"up" and that would allow the sides to be open, but still have a less abrupt end to the roof-line. I've seen plenty of apartments here in the states like that. My last apartment was like that actually. All open balcony, but still covered on the roof. It was quite nice on rainy days, because you could still be outside and not get wet. All in all, the praise doesn't stop. I follow your posts to look back at in the future for inspiration. Can't wait to see more.

I really like the rear windows with the 2x2 jumper and the 1x1 plate above the trans clear brick. That looks really good. I may have to copy that idea sometime. I really like the awning color. And the side entry with the steps and walkway is very unique. I like that a lot. Adds a lot of character and is different from other mini modulars I've seen. Keep up the good work. I need to get back in the groove of mini-Modular building. I can't wait to see more.

I have Orthanc and it is incredibly impressive once built. Some playability, but not as much as the region village. The figures are great on radio it seems, whereas they dropped the ball with Orthanc. The next big question, if you were to MOC with it, do you prefer trees or dark castles? I bought Orthanc on the pre-release because I like Lotr more than Sw.
-
I love seeing them all together like that. Very impressive seeing how many there actually are and how great they do look next to each other. I don't have a complete set, but am bricklinking the early releases. I'm sure I'll get around to finishing them sometime, but in the meantime I will just admire all of them together. Keep up the fun builds everyone!

Alternate Palace Cinema Movie Posters
TheLegoDr replied to Johan the Yellowhead's topic in LEGO Town
I like the idea of alternate movie posters and these look great. At first I thought I liked the transparent appearance, but I think I'd prefer a more solid poster to give a better detailed appearance on the exterior. It looks too dark with no interior light coming out. But it does look good without the upper floor. Anyway, keep up the great work! Looking good! I will do this sometime. -
I love more historic architecture, so as long as this fits into that category (much like many other modulars), then we'll be fine. I would also like a rarer color, but in reality as long as it looks good, it doesn't matter what color it is. The Palace Cinema had good use of color I thought, but wasn't anything particularly rare about it. But they did include some old pieces in new colors, so that helps too. The sand colors look great since they are subdued hues of darker colors. Dark green would be amazing. I keep hoping a winter village set will have dark green, but hasn't happened yet. No matter what, these will be a pick up for sure. Make a modular or winter village set and I will buy them sight unseen.

Honestly, I don't remember how it came up with my wife. I don't even know if she knew I was into LEGO as a child, but when the 2010 Harry Potter sets became available, I showed her and she said I had to get them. Haven't really slowed down since... most of the time she asks if I need any of the sets when they are on clearance. Typically I'm the one not buying it, even though she gave the go ahead... hmm Just tell her your name and you have an addiction.

Isn't there a new Harry Potter theme park in Orlando somewhere? I've never been, but I will definitely make it out to that sometime.

As far as a "dark" castle goes, you can't beat my favorite castle of all time: Black Knight's Castle. The black walls with red roof really sets it apart from other castles since most are light bley. But the building itself is really neat and easily modifiable. I don't know much about Vladek or that wave, so I couldn't say how similar/different they are from each other.
-
I agree...I am upset that it is reddish-brown instead of dark brown. I don't mind having some extra red-brown pieces, but dark brown would have been perfect. With that said, I am less enthused about this set. I think the buildings look good and the figures are outstanding, especially compared to source material, but I'd prefer more dark brown pieces in reality. I'm also not pleased with the piece count, unless that has been changed somewhere. But like always, it will be about the same price to buy the set or buy each figure you want individually. I'll just wait for a decent sale.

Review: 70008 - Gorzan’s Gorilla Striker
TheLegoDr replied to XimenaPaulina's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
Thanks for the review. I'm not really interested in Chima, so I will probably pass on this. The only Chima sets I have are the few that LEGO has sent me for free with large purchases. If only they'd send a free gorilla one... These gorillas are a nice touch to the line. I think they look the best out of the group. I like the new weapon pieces and the mech overall does give that bulky gorilla impression.- 42 replies

Great addition to the aquanaut series. I loved that as a kid, but haven't thought much about them in a really long time. Good idea trying to resurrect the style. You did a great job with it. I should look into my old sets.

LEGO CMF Series 12 Guessing Game
TheLegoDr replied to Itaria No Shintaku's topic in Special LEGO Themes
These are always fun to speculate. 1) I like the idea of a pizza delivery person with a 2x2 tile with box printing. I'd assume a hat/shirt with the pizza chain logo. 2) Lion Suit guy similar to the lion head in the HP video game. That'd be perfect. 3) Flight Attendant (female). Could include one of the vintage style hats, similar to the Butcher's hat. 4) Female dark elf to counter the series 3 elf. 5) Mountie with hat. 6) Soccer player counterpart to fill the sports niche. I'd like to see a female soccer player to get something different and something the same.. 7) Black Falcon soldier to army build. To coincide with the Joust knight. 8) Cupid with small wings and small molded bow/arrow (maybe pearl gold in color) 9) Boxer with a different color, maybe black this time. I don't count the Olympic boxer as the counterpart to the red boxer. 10) girl scout with short legs. Maybe a 1x2 tile with cookie box print. I'm sure they would need a license for an official girl scout, so something resembling one without actually being one. 11) Roman societal figure with a white toga instead. 12) Albert Einstein-esque scientist fellow. 13) Bearded Lady or the half-man/half-woman circus figure. LEGO might avoid this one, but it could add some variety to circus MOCs with the ringmaster and the clowns. 14) Male figure skater 15) Maestro of an orchestra 16) Matador. Someone said that up above. That'd be really neat to see. Have to have a red cape of some sort to hold out though. LEGO might avoid this one too due to the nature of the "fighting." It was really hard to come up with a lot of these. Makes me appreciate how much effort goes into it from the designer's standpoint then. Best of luck to everyone. -
