  1. It's high time I left a comment here. First of all, congratulations on your first ship, LittleJohn! It's not perfect but it's a great start with a nice brick-built hull and I really like the colors. Yes, another mast would look better, but the thought that it was downed in the fight is certainly plausible. The sinking ship is excellent. Perhaps the sailor still hopelessly bailing water is just dazed by it all. And of course the water with floating wreckage looks good. The firing cannon seems unnecessary at this point but it certainly looks great; I assume you included it just to show some of what already transpired. Very good action scene overall and I hope to see more!
  2. Like Phred said, the tan and grey match up well although I would probably have built the fort walls entirely from tan if it was mine. Still, it's a nice little scene with good techniques and plenty details. You could sit this among official sets and it would fit right in - minus the water, which is a very nice touch. Overall this is quite good and I hope to see more Pirates builds from you!
  3. First of all, you didn't waste any time posting after joining up (I left you a welcome on the new member thread) and secondly it's never too early to do a re-make (well, as long as the sets have been released, anyway). The tower looks like it would fit right in with the official sets. Combined with the two pirates in the rowboat it would make a decent set. I would like to respectfully suggest that a little more work be done on the sloop. The sides should probably be built up and the bowsprit should be made from something much smaller in diameter - like the technic bits you used elsewhere. The vessel would be better balanced with the cannon in the middle (vs the stern) and you could probably drop the wheel in favor of a tiller. It's a start, and again, the tower is very nice. See you around!
  4. This reminds me of an Idea book design - small, simple, something that any serious Pirates fan could build. Too bad TLG doesn't offer something like this in a set the way they once did...
  5. I agree with Phred on the colors - they look very good and should work well for the rest of the vessel. His pointers on the different time periods are good as well. Regarding curves, you need to decide whether you're building to resemble TLG-style or historically correct. If you choose the former, just keep on building. If the latter, you might want to check those tutorials. There's nothing bad or wrong about what you have if you're just trying a rebuild of the 10210 IFS. It's definitely a good start, but remember that full-rigged ships always had three square-rigged masts!
  6. The hangman game is funny and well-built. After all he's been through I would think JJB would be thoroughly and everlastingly expired by now. Banshee3, I meant to comment on the bluecoats' game on your ship MOC thread but didn't - now that it's here I can. What are they competing for? The last ration of whiskey? A bottle of rum? It's a funny scene regardless.
  7. Perhaps I shouldn't be commenting on a bumped topic, but I remember seeing this new as a lurker and thinking it looked refreshing even though the castle was built to look somewhat weathered. The trees are unique and very well done and the big doors are nice but the base really gets my attention. Despite being flat it just looks great due to the depth, colors and details. I realize ISC may not read this but there are several good techniques to learn from.
  8. The mirrors really give this a unique, foggy look. I've thought of using them myself but for other reasons. Good imagination for sure!
  9. I immediately noticed the hull gap when building mine (before reading about it here on EB) and shrugged it off; it looks bad up close but I just assumed it was supposed to look like that. Guess I was wrong! I didn't think of checking any other parts, like my white hulls or the LOTR pirate ship hull. TLG has to know about it by now with all the fuss but what's the solution? Ship every buyer the "old" style upper piece free of charge? Seems impractical; they'd need a box just for me!
  10. That's a beautiful gatehouse with excellent colors and architecture. The white domes are wonderful! The tree and road are very good and the minifig posing and details are nice. The base is a bit basic but it doesn't detract from the scene. Very good overall!
  11. Alohamitsu - Brethren of the Brick Seas. Check the forum for the discussion thread.
  12. You got that right. The old classics gave us just that: variety. It was due in no small part to the fact that each faction had a significant number of sets simultaneously. I remember the 1990-94 catalogues in particular and the Pirates theme was loaded - even before the Islanders came along. Then 1995-96 rolled around... it hasn't been the same since!
  13. First of all, this is beautifully written, and the build matches perfectly. The walls are nicely done and the details of the kitchen are very good. As already stated, the broken table and scattered foods look great. The color of the floor provides a nice contrast. With the suspense of the story I must ask - is there more? If not, it's a good stand-alone piece. Well done!
  14. The nearest major city is Roanoke, Virginia, USA. If you can find it on the map the town of Rocky Mount in Franklin County is closer still. Thanks!
  15. This is an amazing project with so many details it would take a very long time to see it all. I'll keep it short for once and just say that I'm anxious to see the final product. Very good job!
  16. This reminds me of a storybook castle for some reason. The black color scheme is unique and the design is very good. It looks right at home in the first photo - spooky, creepy, forbidding. Yes, the landscaping is sparse but still the base is well-textured and besides I don't envision lots of big trees around a black castle anyway! Yet another wonderful build, Kris.
  17. Kai, I'm sorry I missed this but since you brought it back up I have a chance. The foliage is very good and the whole scene looks bright and lively. And of course the custom fruits are good! It's a nice break from all the bloodshed...
  18. The entire scene is beautiful. The tree is superb, the other vegetation is wonderfully dense, and the platform is well detailed. This really contains only two basic colors - brown and varying shades of green - and still it looks great. Very good overall.
  19. Different people prefer different things. I understand there are many fans who would like to see the inclusion of fantasy elements like skeleton crews, mythical powers, etc, both for ships and general sets, but there are many others (myself included) who are quite happy with the "old formula" of pirates battling colonial/imperial powers. Should TLG release a wave of fantasy Pirates it would attract some and repel others. Considering the number of existing fantasy/sci-fi themes, the occasional appearance of the Pirates line, the expectations of most fans of the theme from previous and current sets, and - perhaps most importantly - the existence of POTC, I think it's unlikely we'll see a fantasy System wave anytime soon. But don't give up hope: the ongoing conversation regarding the forthcoming BotBS contains numerous references to greater fantasy content. If more people ask for it and especially depict it within their own builds I suspect TLG would be more likely to produce it in the future. Still, that would risk losing sales to people like myself, even though I might not walk away entirely. While I don't care for the material, I certainly appreciate creativity and good building skills when I see it. Case in point: GoH. I spend some time there viewing and posting replies due to the creative aspect, but the seemingly all-inclusive approach toward magic and especially mythical races doesn't interest me in the least. I think most Pirates fans will be tolerant of fantasy elements in future sets so long as it doesn't dominate the theme. Again, different things for different people.
  20. Dad-gum! LOTR and the Hobbit aren't my thing but that is one serious orc army. That's also one of the best army bases I've ever seen. You could stage some epic battles... if they find a suitable enemy!
  21. The road and base are uniquely colorful and there's a lot of action going on. You never know what tie-ins you might find in these challenges. The gate is pretty good too.
  22. This is a very good micro build. The terrain and especially the pyramids are wonderful. Yet another fiery scene...!!
  23. That's one seriously impressive war machine... and the rest of the scene is rather dark and macabre.
  24. This would benefit from a little more "polish" but the basic scene is good and the bush is excellent. The roadbed works well enough as it is.
  25. This is a unique concept and exceptionally well-built. The base, rocks and tree are all superb and the wagon and ox team are very good. The smashed wagon looks great (in the spirit of the contest, that is). And the minifig posing and expressions match the story well. Excellent overall!
