Looking good Mccoyed! Your WIP looks very promising. I especially like your rock formation on the left hand side of the bank. Couple of suggestions - if you are going so far as to put dark green underneath your trees to indicate shadow, you might want to consider tiering your tree foliage so that the lighter green is on the top, regular green in the middle and dark green is underneath. (I've tried it before and it looks quite good) Also, with your little stream, consider water flow around that rock in the middle of the stream - water will be flowing faster there as it is compressed into smaller channels, which will eat into the bank if it is just dirt. If you want the stream to be that narrow at that point, you might want to consider having a rocky bank there instead. Another thing about the banks - the mix of colours looks ok, but the tan does look a little jarring next to the brown - you might want to space it with some intermediary tones like dark tan or dark orange. I love seeing WIP's of ppl's progress - looking forward to seeing how this one develops!

Darkness in Mitgardia Chapter 6: Fighting Back
Gabe replied to soccerkid6's topic in Guilds of Historica
Excellent build SK! Love the tapering tower, looks very solid and has some great texturing to it. The landscaping is top notch as well. The only thing i'd change is the column of trans-clear 1x1 round plates at the back, i reckon you could get away without them for stability, and ditching them would invite the viewer into your lovely interiors that much better.- 28 replies

Ch II: Team Simon: Cat B: The Cunning of the Drow
Gabe replied to Simon_S's topic in Guilds of Historica
Great entry Simon! The tower is really nice, but what makes it is the scaffolding and construction scene. Love the fig posing on the falling worker too! -
Wow, that's a high ceiling, looks like Djun and Lukan are staying somewhere fancy! I wouldn't worry too much about the gaps at the window, i dare say they wouldn't have been noticed except for that first shot, where you really can't miss them. I get the feeling you could make a workaround to cover them (headlights and cheese perhaps, or even as simple as plates or tiles at the back of the wall) if they bugged you though. Something i would suggest though is selling the story a little better - maybe have the characters sitting on a bench inside the main door, taking off their wet outer layers or being greeted by their host.

Thanks for taking the time to post this narbilu. So many nice architectural details on this, it's very impressive! The curved tan hall at the back (with matching steps underneath it! Nice ), the sweet river gatehouse with porticullis, the cross slits and wooden detailling on the walls and the intergration of the trees into the wall defense really stand out. I'd love to see a section of this on a smaller, more compressed scale, where you can go to town on making everything as detailed and fleshed out as possible.

Nice beginning Lord Dan! The wagon certainly looks as though it has everything one could possibly need. (does it have a kitchen sink? I would have laughed to see that loaded into the wagon! ) At this stage i would recommend working a little on your presentation - try to photo your mocs with even natural light if you can, and invest in a white or other neutral colour background (2 bits of card or a sheet do nicely) to photograph against.

Ch II: Team Simon: Cat C: Over the River and Through the W
Gabe replied to MKJoshA's topic in Guilds of Historica
Some good landscaping in here, the ground on the side of the river with the big trees has a rather attractive slope to it, and the willow tree with it's flowing foliage is nice too. You could improve it further still by rounding out the foliage on the willow and adding a small kink, rocky outcrop or waterfall to the river. (it looks a little too straight at the moment, more like a channel than a natural river) The fight action is good too, and the story is very engaging! -
Link to the Sea Bull topic is what i think Ska was after. Btw, your first two Photobucket images aren't showing on the topic... you might want to fix that!

Kai pretty much said it all - same here for me, UoP +1 on everything except the Tudor style walls.

I made a Fabuland Hobbiton layout at the beginning of the year that i've got a few progress pics of too - very similar to SK, i use rainbow bricks as filler, then final colour brick to roughly plan gradient, then plate to smooth the transition. Tilted plates can help cut down on the amount of small plate needed, also wedge plates are really useful to break up any blockiness. Hope some of that is helpful to you.

Very nice house Nstickney, i know a lot of ppl have been unsure about the mix of colours for the walls, but i really like them myself. The only things i might have done to improve it is use plates instead of bricks in the wall to make the edges between the colours a bit more natural-looking and introduce more dark red into the roof, although having said that, the stylistic simplicity of what you already have is very pleasing. Looking forward to seeing you take on some landscaping as well!

Wow... it's decided, you are my new favorite GoH builder, this is superb! You are cranking out the quality builds so quickly too , it's very impressive! Everything looks great in this - the polished floor with red carpets, the repeating SNOT stairs, the throne itself (cool design!), that huge, intense gate and porticullis, and of course the lava flows. (wouldn't it be cool to have the lava lit up on the back wall tho? Only thing i can think of to improve it) So good, and the perfect illustration to the excellent storyline. Can't wait to hear the next installment!

Oh yeah, great intro build jaapxaap! The angled roof lines are reminiscent of Legonardo's work, and you've pulled it off really well, although some more varied roof texture would be great. Sweet choice of accent colour with the purple too. The landscaping looks very nice, but it's hard to make out with your dark (and slightly soft) pics. I do wonder about the wisdom of allowing that red tree to grow so close to the house too, although the red foliage peeking over the high roof is undeniably pretty! Looking forward to seeing more sweet Nocty builds from you!

Genius idea Simon, love it! The crowd look like they are really getting into it. C'mon Kali! (Australia are out of the real game already, no great surprise there but i'm still sad.) ps. Where's the umpire? Going to be an interesting match without one!

Nice landscaping on your vig krono! You've got some good height and bulk on the tree, which is an excellent start. Next time you might want to start experimenting with longer or branching branches, protrouding tree roots or boles in the trunk - all ways in which you can increase realism in your trees. (It's also good to remember that the ground often tends to be be slightly higher around the base of large trees.)

Ch II: Team Simon: Cat B: Capturing the Drow - Team Simon
Gabe replied to odidoma's topic in Guilds of Historica
Nice work Odidoma, the little creek is great and i like the tan on the pallisade to represent new wood. The foliage and ground texture is very good too. I'd love to see a gate entrance-way to the camp though - that would really complete your fortification! -
Very cool entry MKJoshA! I like the variety of window openings you have on the white wall, as well as the trellis roof. The windows in the church are nice too, and i love all the greenery and the little pond. I'm not sure about the various changes in pitch on the church roof however - they seem to conflict with the profile of the roof ends in places, which is distracting. It would be cool to see a little cobblestone path leading to the church door too - would add some nice texture to the ground. Anyway, nice work!

Great story Kai, you have a real talent for writing! Great to see all the collab mocs together like this. Thanks so much for all your hard work on this project, not to mention coming up with the idea in first place. I had a blast being part of it!

Gabe from Kaliphlin, voting for Avalonia - damn i had a hard time making a decision on this one, both sides were really evenly matched. Great work to all the entrants!

Thanks MassEditor and Gunman for your kind words! Haha yeah it certainly is a change of pace from my other recent ships. Still, you can't always build big! Cheers deGothia and Kabel, i'm really glad that you liked my modest little build!

Gabe replied to Gabe's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks everyone for the kind words and comments, it's good to hear that you like my build! Cheers deGothia! I can't find a name for the plague hood in particular, but here is a little history of plague medicine and the creation of the iconic plague doctors' outfit (quite late actually, in the 1600's). Glad to hear too that my wedding gift Moc from so long ago made such an impression! (I in turn picked up the purple 1x1 rounds idea from DC, back in the day.. ) Thanks Kabel, glad you like it! Well, if they are anything like emus, probably not... -
C.II: DG Collab: Cat B: The sanctuary of Bloodleaf Shrine
Gabe replied to Gabe's topic in Guilds of Historica
Aw thanks Begir and Gunman, glad you like it! Thanks heaps SK for your observant comment! Yes, the staircase does get a little cramped at the top - although the side-on pic on Flickr shows that it isn't quite as bad as it appears from the front. It's only the 4th step down where minifigs have to bend a little, the others are fine. Glad to hear you like the revised version too!- 44 replies

Stunning Torgar! This has got to be the pre-eminent entry of Challenge II - just amazing work with the rockwork (as usual!), waterfalls and architecture. Such beautiful, sinuous forms! The roofs are pretty sweet too. Great stuff!

Ch II: Team Simon: Cat A: Outside the Drow tunnel
Gabe replied to Etzel's topic in Guilds of Historica
Cool little scene Etzel! That hillock above the tunnel entrance is a crazy piece of sculpting - it feels like the earth has been pushed up by the drow somehow.(sorcery perhaps?) Certainly the watching elf doesn't look too impressed!
