(Completed) Call to Arms! Battle of The Wither Woods (And LDD Ch
Gabe replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Wow, this battle has been one wild ride for sure! Thanks and mad props to Ska and Scarst for putting so much time and energy into bringing all the action to us. Great wrap up too, i'm inspired to make a small post-battle moc now. Hey Ska, how did my centaur mercenaries fare? Is Leena Thunderhoof still with us?- 318 replies

Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Gabe replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Great builds Gideon, DM and Kai! Sorry i'm so slow in getting around to comment on stuff atm. It's looking pretty good to me SarahJoy. You have some nice shapes and textures going on there. Sure the bottom section of the outcrop looks very straight up and down, but i don't think that it looks unnatural or out of place. An easy way to break up that area would be to prop up some slopes and plates against it, maybe add some vegetation and small bits of ground clutter (stones etc), or hide it with man-made structures or even minfig action - i've done that before! Consider what can be seen by the viewer - it's often a lot less than you see yourself as a builder. I agree the rock would look amazing with some different colour in there - dark tan, light bley/grey and dark orange are nice for that - maybe just some stripes for rock seams etc. But yeah, that could be a bit of work. As for your earlier question about reworking - i often try to build from the base up, but it doesn't always work out like that, and i do spend quite a bit of time tearing down to get at previous levels, or reworking sections and trying to shoehorn them back into the whole. Sometimes (not often, but it does happen) i scrap things entirely if i run out of steam or build myself into a corner. Or i just shove the build to one side and wait for inspiration to strike while i get on with something else. Count me in Ska! I'd love to take part in this. ps. Congrats Mike and family! Lovely news. -
Mount up! Rhopalocera Lagargander (Giant Butterfly)
Gabe replied to Kai NRG's topic in Guilds of Historica
Ah, i love this one! Very inventive use of the lavender, and i really like the design of the saddle too. The windswept rider is perfect too. The first shot with the base is a great study of motion, although it would have looked even better if you had tilted the butterfly on the trans-clear support. (using the hinge brick 1x2 complete assembly works well i find) The base looks great btw, nice little waterfall. The repeating round ends of those bamboo stalks are a bit distracting on the sides though - i wonder how you could break up or mask that regularity? UoP +1 for both claims, nicely done! -
Great mount Vitreolum! I really like your economical use of parts, yet everything looks just right. I really like the irregular base as well. The one thing that nags at me visually might be that the saddle is very flush with the beast's back, and the rider appears to be recessed into the body a bit.

Thankyou again everyone for your kind and encouraging comments! Cheers Tyler, i take that as high praise, coming as it does from a master of shaping such as yourself! Ah yeah, whoops, i forgot to take that shot on the weekend. Sorry! Glad you like what you can see though.

Excellent build Emma! Love the posable mouth, great shaping on the back legs and daunting array of spikes. It really does look like some nightmare cross between a dragon and a rodent, perfect for Nocty!

REVIEW: 71007 LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 12
Gabe replied to WhiteFang's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Great review White Fang, your reviews are always much anticipated! Great to see the CMF's return to form too after the yawnfest that was the Simpson's detour. I'll certainly be looking out for when these arrive in our stores.- 156 replies

Thanks for the kind words everyone, I'm glad you like my griffin! No worries! Apologies for not asking you beforehand, i had the idea for the setting quite late and it was a bit of a rush just to get it done. I figured though that the Nestlands would be very interested in the well-being of griffins near thier territories. Thankyou! I hoped so too, work has been so busy lately!

Finally got something in for the mount up challenge (Phew! Hate those last minute rushes.. ) -
At the last minute (as per usual, lol!), i humbly submit my entry: The Greater Griffin

I'm sure many of you have wondered how Kaliphlin produces such stunning and detailed maps of it's lands? Well, i am here to enlighten you! The geography department of the University of Petraea have a secondry campus high in the Rakath mountains near Qarkyr, where they maintain several great griffins for aerial surveys. These magnificent beasts are related to the lowlands griffins that have been seen on the escarpment around Queenscross, but are much larger and can fly much higher and further than thier smaller cousins. They are not as fierce as the lowlands griffins either, and are normally very shy and rarely seen in the wild. However, the geography department's griffins have been raised from eggs and are devoted to thier handlers and riders. Here we see Gex Marmota returning from one of his frequent aerial surveys. He has a good bond with the griffin Brindular, and usually flies with him. On high surveys he eschews his usual headgear for a fur-lined hood - it gets cold up there! A Nestlands gaurd stands watch - the department has good relations with the nearby Nestlands clan, and pays well for local security. The adventurer Erynlasgalen is also visiting the department, and is keen to find out more up to date information to assist her in her next expedition. Hope you have enjoyed my build, c and c welcome as usual!

Lovely! That roof is so simple, but so great. I like the tan stonework on the walls and the roof ends as well.

Very nice follow up to your coastal fort BrickCurve! Good to see you trying out some new things here. I really like the varied hieght of the path leading up to the tower, and in general the landscaping is very well done. The only nitpick i can see there is the straight green line on top of the little rocky outcrop, to look more natural you might want to break that up further or have vegetation spilling over the edge of the rock. I like that you have incorporated a door, window and the lion's head into your round tower, and the tan lifts the colour scheme too. The roof i really like - the helms on the corner look great and are an ingenious way to cover an unsightly gap. A couple of things you might want to consider further for walls (both round and otherwise); using more textured bricks, or snot bricks with plates attached to simulate brickwork (also good for attaching vines or creepers too), or introducing plates of differing colour for a subtle weathered look. The top of your battlements are a little plain as well - you could experiment with using inverted slopes to make them jut out from the wall a little, or vary the shapes of the merlons. The last shot is curious btw... an ancient greatsword, buried beneath the tower? What story lies behind that blade i wonder??

HSS Adminstrative and Services: Town Hall of Sionnach
Gabe replied to de Gothia's topic in Guilds of Historica
Lovely work deGothia! Your beautiful new town hall is a fitting civic heart for Sionnach, a meeting place where all can enjoy the splendour of the city. Lord Sansael was very pleased to have had the opportunity to visit! *bows* The building is very nice, but the busy marketplace steals the show for me... so much to look at! The fig posing, photography and general level of detail is excellent. -
Book II - Challenge III - Mitgardian Civil War - Prologue - Chapter 1
Gabe replied to kabel's topic in Guilds of Historica
Woohoo, challenge III, bring it on! Great intro builds Kabel, the narrow mountain gorge looks beautiful. Great dwarf army too! Looking forward to hearing how the story unfolds... -
Wow, beautiful! Welcome to GoH Vitreolum, Avalonia are fortunate to have you! Loving this moc - the ogress is great, love the armbands and hair bra. The tiny hedgehog and the bird overhead are sweet as well. And what on earth are they eating??!
-
Very nice build Wedge! Good to see that we are getting more of a look at Eddy's farm. Lots to like here - the barn construction with the sliding doors is cool, and the wall and tree behind it makes for an attractive backdrop. All the life on the farm is very engaging too, and the landscaping, while sparse, does help to flesh out the scene. I have to agree with SK though that the end of the barn under the roof looks a bit unfinished left open like that. Some handles on the sliding door seem missing as well. I also wonder if the footprint of the whole moc isn't a little on the big side - you probably could have got away with using less space, and compressing the action would have made the foreground look less empty. Great to see the MMV chickens again btw - i always liked that design! UoP +1 for Ag and Zoo - Raising Livestock.

UoP +1 for round walls/towers, no probs. Gedren makes a good point, just add the UoP credits you are applying for to the end of your original post in this thread, that way it won't get missed.

(Completed) Call to Arms! Battle of The Wither Woods (And LDD Ch
Gabe replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Phew! What a rollercoaster of a ride this battle is turning out to be. Poor Phrixelle, it's really not her day! Downed twice in quick succession by the blue spears, that's gotta hurt. Glad she managed to make a contribution at the end though. Also good to see Marty and Nammuat still alive, and the Rakath assasians finding their mark. What happens to assasians who survive their raid btw? Can they go back "into stealth" and be dropped in again, or is it a one-shot deal? Guess it's the battle for the centre now... that dragon looks like it'll take some beating. Go Dugal's side!- 318 replies

Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Gabe replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Falcatas are swords though! And they fit in very well with the Kaliphlin style, i've used them before with my own forces, as well as the khopesh. Before you dismiss Brickforge entirely, they do have the excellent "30 under 30c" promotion, which allows you to pick up a awful lot of armour and weaponry very cheaply. My last order there i spent about $30 including shipping to Aus and received over 90 pieces! At the moment they have some nice helms and blades on sale, albeit in a range of odd colours. (That's never bothered me though, i just paint over them with model acrylics - the oil based stuff is pretty hardy and resistant to chipping, even on hilts) -
Lovely first moc Brickcurve! The overall plan is very appealing and it has lots of nice detail to look at. I like the small quarry, it makes it seem like the defenders still plan to add to the existing fort. The landscaping makes me think this is on the north border of the inland sea somewhere, close to Avalonia. Is this going to be your sigfig's base? Your sea fort is a great addition to Kaliphlin's defences. Looking forward to seeing what you come with next!

I'd love to help out. Things are pretty hectic with me atm, but i'm hoping it will settle down in about 6 weeks or so. Plenty of time for some forward planning! -
Top notch stuff, dG! The likeness to Z's Albion gatehouse is obvious, but you've stamped this build with your own style as well. The different windows in the two towers is interesting, although i do prefer the left-hand tower to the right in that regard - it just looks cleaner or something. Great use for the LoTR sticker over the gate too! Props again to your photography btw - so crisp and bright and inviting! It really compliments your excellent build.
-
So cool SK.. loving the slope at the base of the walls, and the hinged tudor building behind it. The angled supports under the wooden tower are great too. There is such a high level of attention to detail throughout - love it! ps. Congrats on being featured on TBB too btw!
