Welcome back ISC, great to see you back in GoH! Lovely castle you have there, the mottled walls are perfect and the landscaping is sweet as too. A worthy remake indeed!

Nice concept Mccoyed! The armoured spider steeds are great too. I think the best views are above ground, the underground spaces are a cool idea (and i like the way you can take it apart modular style), but they still look a little blocky and unfinshed. With rockwork, i find the biggest thing is just to take your time - i find it's often a two steps forward, one step back thing. Don't get caught up in the idea of doing snotted rockwork for it's own sake either, ppl can go overboard and forget that studs-up can often be just as effective - every technique has it's place!

Ch II: Team Simon: Cat B: New Fortifications
Gabe replied to Hammerhand's topic in Guilds of Historica
Nice fortification Hammerhand! I like the soldiers building the pallisade. The scree slope looks quite realistic too. It could possibly use a bit more texturing and vegetation at the base of the slope though. Good job for getting it in at the last minute! Or possibly they chopped down all the surrounding trees to make the structure and deny the enemy cover i guess? -
Ch II: Team Simon: Cat A: Passing Information
Gabe replied to Lord Vladivus's topic in Guilds of Historica
Sweet little build Lord V! I think my fav part would have to be the small olive tree with the new curly plant leaf on top of it, although the ruins look nice too. Too true! -
Really nice build mpoh98! The low light shot gives it a really expectant, atmospheric feel, and what i can see of the build looks rock solid. I'm not sure about making the three central merlons bunched up like that though - it ruins the line of the top of the wall a bit, although i can see why you did it. Maybe staggering them evenly and placing a flag or standard on the empty side would have helped to make a satisfying border? i'm a bit sad that you didn't get to tackle the other two categories, it would have been cool to see this story play out. Free builds maybe?

Such a fun build Robuko... the pied piper is a great take on the category! It looks as though you are wearing your influences on your sleeve with this build - elements of it remind me variously of deGothia, Capt Beerbeard and Kabel, but with your own twist, like the interesting half-arch gate. Nice work!

C.II: DG Collab: Cat B: The sanctuary of Bloodleaf Shrine
Gabe replied to Gabe's topic in Guilds of Historica
No worries! I should mention though - some of the branches' resistance to bending comes not only from the click hinge itself, but also how the joint is covered - on the more acute angles, you can chock them up with covering plates. Just a tip!- 44 replies

Thanks Infernum! Cheers Kayne, thanks for the votes. Speaking of admirals, i wonder when the GNAR voting and wrap-up is happening? Cheers mrcp6d, glad you like it! Yeah the floating weed was my solution to not having enough trans-blue plate to get the boat away from the shoreline... i didn't want to beach her!

Nice agricultural scene Mike! Like the contrast between the two palm types. The labourer fig is perfect too. Good to see that Masa is such a cultivated man!

Good work on cranking out this sweet little Cat A build at the last minute, Kai! Lots to like here - the forced perspective in the first shot works really well (i love that microscale ship!), the spindly tree and the detailed underwater scene. The UoP credits you applied for here certainly were well chosen! However, i'm less sure about your application for the history credit. Here is the description of the subject from the wiki: "A special discipline, wherein you must build three MOCs depicting significant events in Kaliphlin's history (you make up the events, or use whatever existing history there is). You must also supply a story of suitable length and quality describing the historical event pictured. At least two of the history builds must consist of at least three different pictures, either different scenes altogether, or the same scene at different moments in time, with changes to the scene such as figure movement." Here are some questions that you might want to consider about this moc (as it relates to Kaliphlin history): What significant historical event is being portrayed here? Do you think that portraying current events (in the GoH timeline) counts as history? Is portraying an event that takes place in Avalonia suitable for a subject about Kaliphlin history? Do you think that you have provided enough background story for the viewer to understand the historical significance of the event in your moc? You already have approval for this subject, so these questions might seem a bit redundant. However, if you have trouble answering them for yourself, then you might want to try for the subject again. But if you do decide to claim the history credit for this build (as you have every right to do now), then you might want to apply these questions to your next history build, in order to better understand the requirements of the subject. I hope you don't think i've been too harsh with this critique btw, the history subject seems like one of the more demanding in the UoP course, so i think it's inevitable that there is going to be some confusion surrounding it. Great build anyway!

Ch II: Team DeGothia: Cat B: The Solitary Medic
Gabe replied to Legopard's topic in Guilds of Historica
Beautiful moc Legopard, very serene and contemplative. I love the unusual parts usages for the top of the tower, the chair and the swan. The house itself is great too with the green panel roof, half-timbering and corner details. If i have one small criticism, it would be that in places the underneath rockwork doesn't achieve the same level of complexity as the architecture on top of it. But overall, this is just a treat for the eyes! -
Ch II: Team Simon: Cat C: The Battle for the Enchanted Forest
Gabe replied to narbilu's topic in Guilds of Historica
The sheer size of this is very impressive, narbilu! It looks like it would be a great set up for tabletop gaming. The tan building at the back and the gatehouse over the river look interesting, are there better pics of those around? The landscaping looks a bit thin in many areas, but again, this is a very large area to cover. Nice work! -
Great builds and story, Infernum! The first build is perhaps a little plain, but it fits your close up shots of the conversation really well. The second build is just a lovely bit of landscaping - interesting rockwork, varied ground elevation, texture and vegetation, and the doors are really sweet as well. Looks excellent without the figs! The only thing that seems out of place is the ground level seeming to wrap around the the straight edges of the rockwork, but i can understand if that was done for aesthetic reasons.

Book II - Mitgardia: Guild sign-up and Discussion
Gabe replied to Ecclesiastes's topic in Guilds of Historica
"C & c welcome" is a good shorthand marker for being open to constructive criticism, but i think the best way to open a discussion about your moc is to briefly evaluate it yourself in your description - what you feel works, what doesn't, why you went with one approach over another etc, and then end by asking what other ppl think. Many ppl won't bite, simply because of time pressures as SK says, or possibly because they feel they aren't good enough yet. (which is a bit of a missed opportunity in my eyes, becoming a better critic of your own and others work makes you a better builder in the end - so much of building is the choices you make, not just the techniques you use!) But by starting the conversation yourself in this way, you are far more likely to get thoughtful and possible helpful comments. -
Very nice build Carson! The stonework on the tower is great, although i do feel that you may have overused the 2x2 tiles a fraction. (1x2 often look better) I really like the path and small jetty as well. The story is quite moving and showing the carrier bird at the moment of release reinforces it's pathos very powerfully in the build. UoP +1 for Wall technique and window frames, but i'm with Robuko on the water - nice idea, but there just isn't enough of it.

Ch II: Team Simon: Cat A: Thirty Seven Days
Gabe replied to -Carson Haupt-'s topic in Guilds of Historica
Interesting build Carson Haupt! Quite confusing to look at - took me a little while to work out where the jail cell was in the overall plan, which was a nice counterpoint to the hero being lost in the story. The underground vegetation is cool and the rockwork is nicely handled too, although i'm with robuko - i'd love to see some overall shots. -
Nice substantial wall, krono! I quite like the gate with the gaps at the top, and the addition of the vine to the right hand side of the wall adds interest as well. If i had one suggestion however, it might be to spruce up the crenellations on top the wall - maybe add cheese slopes on top of them, or build out with snot bricks/slopes or inverted slopes. (Also, there are some loose bricks on the parapet in your second pic, you might want to get the masons onto that! ) I don't know, but i'm pretty sure you can post better pics after the deadline if you wanted? It's just presentation after all, not like you are physically altering the build.

Thanks Robuko, i was really pleased to be able to get this one in on time, i wasn't sure i would make it. Thanks for the inspiration! Thanks guys, glad you like it! Thanks nstickney and cheers for the UoP votes too! Haha yeah, "vanilla" about covers it for the entire cliff really, that whole section was a bit of an afterthought. Glad to hear that you thought the tilt worked, i really wanted to convey the sense that the skellies were rocking the boat as they tried to board her. Thanks Scaevola and gedren! Cheers Kai, yeah i really pushed myself to get this one done, it's got to be the smallest Cat C i reckon! Cheers and thanks for UoP vote too! Thanks Simon and Hammerhand! Yeah i figured the sail would look ok 'cause of (a) dragons fitting in with Avalonian heraldry and (b) elves being weirdos who do what they want, Thor. Glad to hear you like the figurehead too, Hammerhand! Cheers Carson, glad you like it!

Ch II: Team DeGothia: Cat A: The Kaliphlin Medical Corps
Gabe replied to Gabe's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks heaps Robuko, Lord Vladivus, TenorPenny, Kai, Scaevola, Torgar and Carson Haupt, i'm glad you like it! Thanks also Kai, Scaevola and gedren for the UoP votes. Thanks guys! Yep you got it, the raven head is meant to be a plague mask - doesn't look that great on (eye holes are a bit too wide) so i thought i'd hang it from the wagon instead. I like the way you think Lego Dr! Yeah, certainly one would have to worry about a drow raiding party capturing a KMC cart to travel undetected and scout defenses etc, possibly though they wouldn't know the pre-arranged hand signals drivers give to the Avalonian sentries as they pass... suspicion is aroused, cue epic chase sequence, possibly through a town with the drow "patient" in the back throwing pots/pans/plague soaked rags/some kind of magical bomb at pursuers to shake them off... Yeah, the moc stories here often trail off into dead ends and such, and there are a lot of competing stories as well, it can be a bit confusing! But fun confusing, i think anyway. Thanks for your comment! -

C.II: DG Collab: Cat B: The sanctuary of Bloodleaf Shrine
Gabe replied to Gabe's topic in Guilds of Historica
Thanks Hammerhand, Mike, Mass Editor and Garmadon for your kind words and encouragement, it means a lot and i'm really glad you like it! Cheers mrcp6d! The tree is surprisingly stable, it's a technique i've used in the past as branch supports for bird sculptures. It uses the big clicky ball joints with the 2x2 bricks on either end (what are they called? They came in the "rise of the Sphinx" PQ set, amongst others, but that's the one i remember) You can manipulate the branch around quite a bit to find the angle that works best for you, which is a nice feature of this tree style. The most annoying thing however is finding ways to cover up all those ball joints... Thanks heaps Legopard! I wasn't sure at certain points as i was building it either, but it's certainly grown on me. I have ditched the dark orange leaves in my revisions now... that was a good call.- 44 replies

Gabe replied to kabel's topic in Guilds of Historica
Sweet Moc Kabel, the covered wagon looks really slick and your tree is nice too. Great to see Grimmson again, looks like he has an interesting tale to tell. (once he remembers it!) -
Cool build Emma, i like the moat, design of the arrow slits and arch over the drawbridge! (Not 100% sold on the window in the drawbridge though) Great pics too btw!

Ch II: Team Simon: Cat B: Dunholt Tower
Gabe replied to Lord Vladivus's topic in Guilds of Historica
Really nice build Lord Vladivus, i like how imposing the tower looks and the ground texturing and foliage is great too. I agree with SK about the red section, although i think it would look alright if it was kind of like a protruding alcolve that was confined to a smaller area of that side of the tower, kind of like in DC's Tower of the Damned? Anyway, i hope your camera gets better soon, sand certainly doesn't play well with camera insides! -
CH II: Team Simon: Cat A: Losing the Dwarven tunnels
Gabe replied to narbilu's topic in Guilds of Historica
Nice Moc Narbilu, the tunnel looks great. A couple of things you could do to improve the build might be to texture up the dark green plate at ground level to about 2-3 plates high underneath the tree (assuming you have enough dark green, it's not the most common of colours), and increase the length of the branches on the tree to reflect the trunk girth. More foliage never goes astray either!
