It seems funny to me that there's any debate over what Classic Space means. The torso is such an obvious way to differentiate Classic Space from everything else. I don't think I've ever seen anyone argue over this point before. After Classic Space, we always had named factions, which are clearly distinct from the original theme. I don't believe any other factions ever appeared in a Classic Space set. Classic Castle is definitely more vague. I would argue that it ended with the arrival of the Black Falcons and Lion Knights in 1984. That's when the knights became less generic and there's a very clear difference in style at that cutoff. That's when horses and panels were introduced, which, along with the more detailed torsos, completely changed the nature of the theme. The only downside I see to this cutoff is that this leaves us with only a handful of sets for Classic Castle, but hey, that's not my fault. That's what the designers did. 😛

I don't think I would have been as disappointed with this series if they were in bags and if I had seen the final reveal before reading the descriptions. If they were in bags and I didn't know what was coming before I saw the images, I would probably think, "Oh, that's cool. There are some great parts in here I'm interested in." I had quite different expectations when I saw the text description, and it was a huge disappointment when I saw the image later. But with them being in boxes, the barrier to entry is way too high. I don't want to buy an entire case just to get a few parts I'm interested in. I'm definitely not going to buy the boxes blindly just for maybe a 1 in 6 chance I get a couple pieces I'm interested in. This is on par with most minifigure series. I often skip an entire series if there's nothing I'm interested in, and usually there are about two that I want to buy. I'm lot more pessimistic because I can't buy them in bags. It would take something really extraordinary to make me shell out the cash for a whole case or to buy them at inflated prices on Bricklink for individuals. $5 is already the maximum amount I'm willing to pay for most minifigures. The Ice Planet one would be better if it was sold as a new theme. I would probably be interested in that if it wasn't sold as a new version of something else because it's so radically different. The Ice Planet faction was a group of research scientists. This person looks like a trained killer. I also don't get the penguin. I guess it's meant to be humorous, but it makes no sense in any other context. They could have used that part slot for the visor on the M-Tron minifigure. The M-Tron minifigure really isn't that bad. The device he's holding looks kind of cool. But those torsos are super cheap on Bricklink. Heck, I could get an entire M-Tron minifigure with the visor and everything for about $3 online, so why would I pay more for this new one? I don't feel like this really adds anything to what already exists. And if I was just buying blind boxes, I'd have a 1 in 12 chance of getting one, so on average, I'd be paying $60 for each one, or maybe $10 from Bricklink before shipping. I could get about three of the originals for that price. I think what it really comes down to is that novelty is their primary goal for the CMF series. They aren't catering to builders. They're trying to sell these as collectable items. It's in the name, after all! If there's anything in a series that's useful for MOCs in particular themes, you might say it's just a coincidence. I imagine this is why they really don't care about the switch to boxes. These are designed to sit on people's shelves like Funko Pop dolls. I don't think they're trying to appease people like me who want all of the minifigures to have some cohesion with existing themes.

Lego Icons 10332 Medieval Town Square Discussion Thread
jodawill replied to BrickJagger's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Is anyone else getting nervous about this set? After the Troubadour, the Lion Knights Castle, the Forest Hideout, the Blacktron set, and the Galaxy Explorer, I had very high hopes for Majisto's Workshop and the space CMFs. Both of those were so disappointing, it really makes me worry about the quality of this set as well. Eldorado Fortress was another one I was really excited about. It had some good elements to it, but it was still incredibly underwhelming. The good thing about this set is that they don't have to imitate any particular classic set. They're free to take a new direction, which is great. But after so many major disappointments the past year, I'm really concerned that this may also be a bad set. I really hope I'm wrong. And I hope it was designed by the same guys who did the Lion Knights Castle. They're about two years apart, so that may be possible. -
Wow. I really don't like this series. If they were still in bags, I'd buy a couple of the pink space babies, but it's not something I'm interested in paying more for to either buy a whole case or buy from Bricklink. It's cool that they brought back the chainsaw piece (not sure yet whether it's neon), but that isn't a rare piece. Everything else is a really hard pass for me. I was excited when I saw the titles of them this morning before I heard there was a picture. There was a great Ice Planet torso on PAB a while back, so I had high hopes that this one would be a great fresh take on the old theme. It's certainly different, but not in a good way. The M-Tron one isn't bad, but it doesn't fit into the original theme, and it also doesn't stand out as something new worth building around because it's still the same torso. I was also excited when I saw something about a classic space robot and a space nanny. I thought at least one of those would include a new classic space torso, probably the black one, or maybe dark bley. I can't believe there's not a single classic space torso here. This wave is radically different from what I expected. I'm glad I'll be saving money this year by passing on these boxes. I love that rocket! It looks awesome.

Yeah, I think the comment about not knowing which ones will be popular applied to more random concepts. The costume minifigures used to be a lot more popular than they are now. I remember the hot dog one was selling for about 3x retail price as soon as it came out. Obviously, anything for army building will be in high demand. I wish they would put all of them on PAB. I'm still frustrated with the BAM knights from a year or two ago. I was finally able to get some because I was in the right place at the right time. When I got there, a family was standing at the BAM table pulling out every single one for resale - many hundreds of them, if not over a thousand. Any time I drove to my "local" store (which was an hour away at the time), the employees would tell me that someone bought all of them as soon as they put them out. I wouldn't be surprised if we do see more CMF parts on PAB. They've become much more generous with the parts selection recently. I can't wait to see what's listed next month.

The real problem isn't resellers. It's the stores but carrying enough minifigures. They're hard to find because the stores don't keep them in stock. But if they're going to he random anyway, you can buy as many as you want directly from Lego, or you could buy them by the case for less on Bricklink. It's just supply and demand. If everyone sold their tournament knights at $5, there would be NO supply. Everyone would build armies of them. The only way for any stock to remain anywhere is for the cost to reach a point where demand cools off. Yes, this prices some people out of the market. That's how economics works. The only solution is for Lego to make more.

I'm just a casual Technic fan, but I don't see this ad them running out of ideas. I actually think it's a refreshing lineup because they've been doing the same things over and over again for so many years. It seems like a lot of sets are just new skins on previous models with a different license. How many supercars do we need? I've been missing the more exotic Technic builds for a long time. These sets certainly scratch that itch for me. To say this shows they're running out of ideas is frankly ridiculous. This is perhaps the first original idea they've had in quite some time.

LEGO Sci-Fi Ongoing - Rumors, Speculation, and Discussion
jodawill replied to Lyichir's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
I've always thought Duplo classic space would be really cool. This one looks kind of dumb to me. After seeing the rest of the City sets, I have a bit more appreciation for what they're going for here. But none of those sets appeal to me. The only space sets I like so far are the Technic ones. I plan to buy all of those. I really hope we get some more old school type space sets in 2024. This is pretty disappointing for the year of space, except for the Technic ones. I'd rather see a new scifi theme than all of these random teases that amount to nothing useful. It does remind me of Nexo Knights in how it was so close, but none of the pieces were useful for castle MOCs. -

https://www.thebrickfan.com/lego-technic-2024-space-sets-revealed/ Oh man. All of these Technic space sets are great. I saw the rover and the orrery a little bit ago after icm mentioned they were on Instagram. I don't have an Instagram account, so I could only see the top few posts, and it just showed those two sets. Now they've been officially announced. I love the gray tires. Everything about these sets is so cool. I think this is the most excited I've been for a space set since UFO. Alien Conquest had some cool stuff, but I think this is better. I'll have to buy all of these. I showed the orrery to my son before he went to bed. A little while later, I walked into his room and he was building an orrery out of Duplos with the lights turned on. -

I actually prefer the smaller sets. Large sets feel like a burden to me because there's so many pieces to keep track of and it's a very long process to rebuild them. And when it comes to spaceships, smaller ones are more fun to play with. I think the Lightyear ship might be the best spaceship they've ever released. I would love to see them put that kind of effort into a whole wave of original space sets. I also love the tiny sets. The Benny's Space Squad vehicles were great. -

I think there is something to the idea that sets like this fall too much in between real vehicles and scifi. My son loves the Duplo space shuttle and he loves classic space. Both real space and scifi themes are cool in their own ways. Realistic ones are cool because they portray what's really happening in the world and kids can find them aspirational because they can see themselves flying on a shuttle themselves someday. If you can't see yourself doing or witnessing it in real life, you're probably going to want something more interesting. Real world designs generally aren't interesting to look at because they need to be practical. It's not necessarily something you want to emulate with a fantasy/scifi theme. -

LEGO Sci-Fi Ongoing - Rumors, Speculation, and Discussion

I asked my son what he thought of the set. I go to him whenever I want an unbiased opinion because everything is new to him and he gets excited over a lot of stuff I snub my nose at. He said he didn't think it was very good, but he couldn't explain why. He just said he thinks classic space is better. I think the reason is that it's just too similar to the real world. It doesn't really scratch that itch for people who want something more fantastical. That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it. Maybe some other people like that more. I think the box art is also ok given that it's just a city set. I never really expected a lot personally. There's still a rumor of another larger set that's supposedly similar to the Galaxy Explorer. I'm hoping that one will be more in line with what we space fans are looking for. -

That's interesting. Unless the image was shared by a person who stole the package in transit, someone is probable going to lose the privilege of doing early reviews. It has a visible number on the sticker which may be a unique identifier. This ship looks good, but I do wish it had a more interesting color scheme. -
That Lightyear ship looks awesome! I've been wanting to make a Blacktron version of it also. It seems to fit that theme perfectly. I haven't seen the movie, but that's just an absolutely incredible ship. I wish we could get a new space theme with vehicles of that caliber. I'd love to see more photos of it!

Galaxy Explorer (10497) - How well did it sell?
jodawill replied to AmperZand's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
I bought 7 of them, so I think our tally is at 40 now. I originally bought two of them directly from Lego when it was released. Then Walmart had them for $75, so I bought another. Then they dropped to $50 and I bought four more (and I used the $10 off coupon on one of those). If Walmart dropped the price back down to $50 again, I would buy even more. In my opinion. The set isn't perfect, but $50 is an incredible deal for this parts pack, especially given how difficult it's been to obtain the minifigure torsos.- 53 replies

It's not a new part, but it's been over 30 years since it's appeared in a set and the old polycarbonate ones are $6 on Bricklink. I ordered 100 of them to make sure I have a lifetime supply before they go away. Of course, I say that, and 5 years from now I'll come up with a MOC that requires a few thousand of them.

I can't see the photos. Could you reupload them? I'd love to see this.

Black Seas Barracuda is probably the most iconic, but I think Skull's Eye Schooner was the best. Both of these were before my time. As a kid, I coveted Redbeard Runner, not having any context of the great things that came before it. The PoBB ship is excellent, but the compromises they made to accommodate the dreadful island irritate me a lot. It probably wouldn't be too difficult to flesh it out to make it the best ship of all time, but it would be hard to dissect a set like that over the course of a week or so while my kids are going in and out of the room. That set is very close to being the greatest pirate ship of all time, and maybe objectively, it is. But the island concept and the new jolly roger really grind my gears. I did eventually buy one after it was discontinued, and I really enjoyed building the ship. I didn't finish the island. I love how they slanted the walls to make the shape look like a real ship instead of just going up straight like the classic ships. It also felt to me that it rely too heavily on small pieces like a lot of modern sets do. I appreciate that. 10305 also used a lot more large pieces, which is a much better direction. That set actually has more 1x4 bricks (in a single color) than any other set.

I think 71460 actually makes a better "real" space set than the city one. It's a different color scheme than any of the previous themes, but that's fine. It would of course look better if you remove the school bus elements. Otherwise, that's the kind of set I would personally like to see in a new space theme. It still has some white, but that blue sets it apart from the sterile look of the new space set and the Exploriens. It's wackier and it has stud shooters. I like it quite a lot. I'm tempted to start collecting that theme. It's pretty similar to Time Cruisers, isn't it? -

I read the Brickset review tonight while I was waiting for the Black Friday sales to start. I hadn't realized that the shutters are actually functional. That makes it so much worse in my opinion because not only are they out of proportion to the rest of the set, but they're also out of proportion with themselves. When they're open, they're spread way farther apart than they should be because of the gap created by the hinges. I wasn't planning to get this one, but I did because 10305 went on sale. I'm just going to sell my Majisto set. Hopefully someone else values it more than me (monetarily).
