Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Cwetqo replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Yeah, he held an 90 minute Q&A at Skaerbaek Fan Weekend. Bad news is that he is now basicly a manager, so he will not have that much time to design stuff (he will still do it, but less than before). -
I think that size of this train is perfect for it's intended use. Ever tried running 10173 around single loop? The train spans over more than a half loop and it just doesnt look proper. The things that bother me more are how the train loks when you add PF, strange looking single big wheel configuration and one missing car (typical train for me is engine, tender and three cars). I will fix PF by using 9v motor, there is nothing that could be done for wheel configuration (unless you turn it into toy story engine) and I will build additional car.

Remember that some sources said that "Spaceslug" promotion was not that succesful in some regions (with few or in some cases not even a sigle one AFOLs signing for it) and that at that time TLG issued statement that it will follow the rules and not distribute Space Slug to casual visitor. I guess that left them with some number of Space Slug sets, which will be now distributed as part of this promotion (and help at least a bit to avoid another fiasco - supposedly low initial DS sales - my speculation).

I heard somewhere that central storage in Billund is also out of stock, which is very rare and so far happened just few times, last time that I remember it was with wall-e, so it could be that they are fixing something. To be clear: this is just my speculation. But no worries: I'm sure that DC will be back and with us for many years. They would not put in all that work for just few week's sales.

I guess now we need new UCS Cloud City too, to make a kit with 75137

Everbody can participate! It's not LUG related survey, so it doesn't matter, as long as you take some time and put in goog, well thought answers. Survey may be a bit long, that's why it's divided into 5 parts and you can choose to just answer those that are interesting to you.

I would also like to invite everybody to contribute! When we usualy want to express on current LEGO sets to the people who make them, we are instructed to use Customer Service or something similar. I worked with Mel on evaluating the questions, and she told me that this is meant to go directly to design department and that she will be back with their feedback. So, if you ever wanted to say something about special, limited, Gift with Purchase or other "non-standard" sets, now it's the time to do it! Thank you!

I must say that in general I like both sets, buth both with some reservations. Assault on Hoth is great "one-in-all" set for someone who just started with LEGO SW and wants to get all sets. Almost everybody else already has something from hoth and by getting this set just get doubles. Another problem is "UCS" badge. In my opinion, very limited spots for expensive should be kept for sets which can not done with combining several smaller sets. ALL other UCS sets represent large, single big items, which could naver be be made with combination of "system" sets. Even Ewok willage, which only one which is a bit "scaterred" works only as a whole. Ok, maybe we could have on tree as a sets, but it would not look proper. But with Assault on Hoth, it's just a combination of several "system" scale sets. It's lazy, "cheap" and inslutig to fans of UCS series, who have to get it just to keep the series complete, even if it has no place in it. With Death Star it's different. Even 10188 was not real "UCS" for me (that was DS2), but such set could never be made on "system" scale and it's good that they used the spot. I like this new version too. Ok, maybe I hoped for larger overhaul, but anthing added would skyrocket the price and we would just not be happy with smaller DS. So, main grudge here is the price. I understand inflation, I understand licence too, but still, 10188 also had license (it just went to Presidio instead and of Burbank), but still, 120 euro is too much. I look forward to re-done 10179, but with this ratio it will cost 800 euro and I sincerely hope that they will make smaller version (still UCS but not that behemoth).

Just to be clear: Hi All. As the images are now officially shared through several channels including our own facebook channel, then I hereby cancel the below embargo set date of September 30th on showing images. I am sorry about the confusion on all the Star Wars related announcements and embargos. @Kim Thomsen, LEGO Community @ Engangement Posted today!

This came with press release: The LEGO® Star Wars™ Death Star™ was a huge hit with fans when it launched in 2008 and we are excited to announce that we have made some awesome updates and improvements to this huge model! Our designers added over 200 bricks and elements as well as 3 new minifigures. This 2016 version offers a great building experience to both those fans who have the original set, and those who may be new to the LEGO® Star Wars™ universe. This is not an indication of any future re-release or set updates.

With my poor french: Create the Lego version of the Caterham Seven 620R! Assited steering and electric windows ? Not even in dreams! The Caterham Seven is clearly not made for small players! Remove the forward fuselage, the motor cover or motor itself and see more closely the authenthic details of a lego model that truly caters to connoisseurs!

10214 already got such transformation, but since all bricks are still in production, they changed just the box (AFAIK). Thats why they left the same set number. Number of UCS slots per year is not limited, but number of D2C sets on shelfs at the same is. If we look from that perspective, than new did not occupy D2C slot, but it just took the spot of 10188. Now, I wonder what will happen in next few years. I seems that only new sets are really "new" and all existing UCS sets get just updates. Some are more updated (like X-wing) and some less, like DS. I remember seeing next years snowspeeder in retailer catalogue and what I then thought was picture of old snowspeeder (10129), but after last events, It might as well been picture of new set, with just slight modifications. Those are of course just speculations, but still, If I would own 10178, I would probably sell it now, because the prices will fall a lot if re-issue comes.

At long last a LEGO store in Australia - what should i expect
Cwetqo replied to Mathu83's topic in General LEGO Discussion
It's not pick-a-brick like on S@H. You can get just some (few dozens) bricks, depending on current selection. They sell it by the cup: you pay 15 dollars (or something like that) and fill the cup (they come in two sizes). It's great if they have what you want (especially for smaller parts), but most of the time bricks are not that useful. You can also get pretty much all exclusive lego sets and the usualy have some assembled at store. There should also be build-a-minifig rack, where you can assemble custom mifing from available parts for ceertain fixed amount (few dollars). They will also have a lot of keychins, cups and other merchandise. Prices should be same as on your S@H and discount will be rare, except for VIP points. -
Kim Thomsen (from LEGO) just said that new D2C set is planned for october 1st and that he expects press release "a month in advance, same as for other D2C sets". From my experience it will not be exactly one month prior to release, but most likely a few days earlier

[REVIEW] 42056 - Porsche 911 GT3 RS
Cwetqo replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I found something interesting: Top Gear Magazine recently visited LEGO HQ in Billund, where they talked with 42056 set designer Uwe Wabra. Among other interesting things, this intrigued me most: The model was variously too long, the roof needed to be more curved, the proportions finessed, and Porsche even vetoed the inclusion of the GT3’s rearsteer that Uwe had managed to replicate. On the other hand, the team agreed to leave out the cooling fans, so that the model’s amazing working engine could be enjoyed properly. “It’s one of the important things we talk to our partners about: the abstraction level. Car designers talk in great detail, obsess over a beautiful curve they’ve created, then we show them something that’s a straight line and has holes in it. But this is a Lego Technic Porsche, not a model of a 911 GT3 RS. A certain leap of imagination is required.” You can find complete article here: http://www.topgear.com/car-news/insider/how-build-supercar-lego-way#11 -
I will most likely use just with motor and rechargeable battery. There will be much less wires and that ugly big gray receiver will not be there. It's easier for children anyway: just dial the speed and click the button to start.

I think 88000 is bold because you can exchange it with 8878 (then you can leave out the 8879 and 8884 too, if you want it just to run at constant speed).

At least wait fir official pictures (16CET today). I did not like it at first too, but now I think its perfect for what it is and the price is ok too. There are many nice little details and, at least for me, it catches christmas feeling nicely. It's no emerald night of course, but it should at least drive properly. I gathered about 80% of 10173 and I planned to complete it this year, but I doubt I will bother with it now (those missing parts are quite expensive).

For wheels, I beleive we will gut just those from one mold: two flanged and one no-flanged, which will be left after the build. And I'm quite sure sure that such configuration of wheels is becuase of optional motorization and requirement that the train is not long (10173 on basic track circle is just ugly, because it's too long).

This was my first set too and it's still my favourite between smaller sets.

TLG has told us to expect official press release soon.
