Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
badbob001 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
The only LEGO investments I have are limited to saving them for future gifting. As for modulars, I don't think I could stand gifting such a large set to anyone... except myself. :) -
Bricks cracking... just from being connected to one another?
badbob001 replied to Endgame's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Has anyone tried to 'repair' their cracked bricks? Would it help to brush some MEK solvent into the insides of the cheese slopes? -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

See! LEGO marketing knows exactly what it is doing. Delay the next modular announcement. Modular-addicted AFOL with cash to spend, dying for a fix, buy up existing Modular stock. $$$$$ Then announce next modular. Make plans for next year's modular to be a two-parter but have the combined cost be higher than existing sets. Bwahahahaha! Get drink of water from cackling too much. Monitor forums for more addictive behavior and stir as needed. Steeple finger tips, muttering "Excellent" -
Updated comment: I like the legs used (on the minifigure) and it really helped me with a design problem I've been dealing with for a long time. Thanks! And I like the colors overall of the scene but it may be improved with better contrast between floor and the piano. Personally, I prefer tan tiles to represent wood floors. The piano could be improved a bit. For the black keys, I suggest using the old-style hinges with the three prongs. And I'm not so sure about the cheese slopes for the top, but if you're trying to match a real piano that has a sloping profile, I suggest putting the slopes to the side and have the middle be flatter and smoother. If you want instructions for this piano, see this.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
badbob001 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Maybe LEGO can release a companion series called 'Modular Streets' that goes in front of the current Modular Buildings. And the showcase set has elevated train tracks over the streets and an elevated train station like the ones in New York City. -
Thanks for the news! I'm disappointed with the 'reveal' since it can't be integrated with Santa's Workshop, but it would go with the previous winter sets. I suppose Santa's Workshop itself doesn't integrate with the other Winter Village sets either... unless you assume the whole Workshop is just a prop...

Lego 10243 Parisian Restaurant--!New Build & Review!
badbob001 replied to VintageLegoEra's topic in LEGO Town
Seeing all these rats infesting the modular buildings, it seems long overdue for LEGO to come out with a pest control theme. Maybe when they run out of ideas in the Police theme, they can create an animal control police force. -
Has anyone bought two of these sets to obviously get the complete eight reindeers, but more importantly, to expand's the workshop? I'm just curious to see what is possible.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
badbob001 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Maybe LEGO's marketing department wised up and realized that it's not very smart to announce a product before the holidays but have it not available until after the holidays. People wanting to buy a modular may ignore the current stock and wait for the new hotness. People saving their money for holiday purchases may decide they need to keep that money for the new and expensive post-holiday modular. I vote for LEGO to announce it for purchase in December... hopefully along with a VIP-points promotion. :) -

Micro-scale modulars series 2 CONFIRMED! Thanks. :) -
I don't know how you did it, but this app is many many many times faster than anything else out there (at least for up to 4 stores). The results are very slightly more expensive, so perhaps this is due to a calculation shortcut or just a different method.

My local store use to have enough for the "big kids" but in recent years, they would run out and now it's kids-only. I guess LEGO suddenly got much more popular or people are networking better to spread the news of these freebies.

[MOD] Ghostbusters Ecto1 (improved looks/details/in-exterior)
badbob001 replied to B Rick's topic in LEGO Licensed
This is very nice. I haven't built mine yet but the first mod I always wanted to do was to get two minifigures sitting side-by-side in the front like a normal car. Thanks for showing me that it's possible. Something else I thought about doing was having the entire back slide out to load the backpacks. No idea if that is possible but we'll see. I like the beefier higher hood in your version. But I like the side-look of the original with the single stud next to the front door and the single stud next to the rear door (I like the symmetry of the matching studs). The two studs next to the front door seems like a big cut-off.- 13 replies

People criticize the Town Hall for being generic, but I think because of that, it's one of the more versatile modular buildings. With little exterior change, It can be used as: a town hall (obviously) an apartment building (The Lego Movie) a court house a bank a school a police station most types of office building: post office, newspaper office, etc

I want to confess that when I were a little kid, I did open a small set in the department store. But not to steal any of the bricks, but to look at the catalog, which were so wonderful back then with their vignettes. Sorry Macy's.

How would I limit my results to only stores in the USA and not Canada? Update: 0.1.3 seems to be US-only, which is what I want. Perhaps for the next version, just have individual country checkboxes for from and to.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
badbob001 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
But what exactly is an old fashion newspaper building? I don't necessary see architecture and function needing to follow each other. For example, the Town Hall can easily be used as an apartment building (LEGO movie), school, bank, post office, library, police station, and even newspaper office. Now if LEGO came out with a newspaper office that looked similar to the Town Hall, then it might not be that attractive to buyers. Everyone have their priorities on what they want and LEGO designers needs to find some balance in their design so to satisfy the most people. I guess we just need to vote with our wallets and purses. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
badbob001 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Does anyone have some insight on how well the modulars sold in comparison to each other? If the PR sold really well, then that is the market telling LEGO what it likes. And are there many interesting building archetypes left unexplored? If not, then LEGO designers may turn their focus on the other aspects of these sets, such as interior design, vignettes, building function (ie: hospital, police station, etc), or <gasp> play features. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

This is why I love the Green Grocer. It has an almost secret alleyway for public access to the interior of the block. Market Street has an alleyway as well, but not as elegant. If the new set involves some sort of crime, like a bank heist, then it would be ideal for the criminals to break-in covertly (ie: not from the front door). When I first heard about the alley, I thought perhaps they will break into the building from the sidewall of the alley (I know of an actual crime where they removed the array of mailboxes in the front hallway of an apartment complex, exposing the thin wall of the adjacent electronic store that they later robbed). I thought of the traditional alley, which is a tall vertical space between two buildings, like when you pull the two halves of the petshop set apart. But given the 32x32 restriction, even a 4 stud-wide alley would leave the buildings looking starved and be impossible to play with or even display. But if the alley was designed like the one in the green grocer, where it's more like a passageway, then it makes much more sense. The criminals could use the alleyway to get to the back, where they can either breaking into the backdoor, break through the backwall, or climb up to the roof from the fire escape. Another possibility is for the face of the building to appear as one piece and have a passageway in the middle. But in the rear half of the building, the middle section is a void and open, allowing for neighbors to spy on each other and for clotheslines to crisscross it. Something like the middle column of this photo: Now, if it can also have a heart-string-pulling scene like this one, then it would be a monster hit: -
It's about that time of the year for buying LEGO (double points, freebies, holidays approaching) and I went to shop.lego.com to look at this set. Boy, the user ratings for this set is low and the major complaint is that it's way too small and simple, especially compared to previous winter sets. I originally felt the same way but I really love the October freebie and Santa's workshop would go well with it. I'm super-hoping that the late-November freebie can somehow integrate well to make the whole scene larger. The rumors of it being an ice-skating scene leaves me a bit disappointed, but perhaps it involves elves and a snowman, uh, ice-skating.

Lego CMF Series 13 Guessing Game
badbob001 replied to Itaria No Shintaku's topic in Special LEGO Themes
It's likely so one can adjust some element of their display to match the color of the series. Myself, I add matching-color plates to the bottom of the stand. It makes it easier to group them back to their original series. -
Proposal to girlfriend using this Lego Cow in Legoland DM

So you're making us wait for the video to know her answer? Of course, if it wasn't a happy ending, we would likely see a police-dash footage of something like this happening to miniland:
