I think the official model is better minifigure scaled compared to the original. The original was too high above the ground and much too long. I noticed that only the driver's side has a side mirror. Is this the case in the movie as well? I suspect this would be too wide to fit into the garage door of the Fire Brigade. Do they even make garage doors wide enough for it to fit. It's not even the right type of door anyway as the movie version has doors on hinges. With the Delorean, my first instinct was to fix it by improving the hood and modifying it to allowing both characters to sit in the car. With ecto-1, I don't really see anything on the exterior I would change, but I would want to modify the front seat to fit two characters side by side. This is really a well designed model.

I'm working my way building from the earliest modular to the latest (not including Market Street). I just complete up to the Town Hall and will do the Palace Cinema next. Still haven't bought HH or PR yet (maybe on the next 3x points day). So far, the most enjoyable build is PS. It's refreshingly broken down to four bag groups instead of the usual three and it's packed with little details all along the way. Seriously, we need more 16x32 buildings. The least enjoyable is the GE since there is so much repetition on every floor, which is interesting because otherwise it's a very attractive model. I guess 'modern' buildings will be pretty boring to build.

I use basebrick.com to track my inventory since it allows me to import my bricklink orders. It tells me my parts total is at a modest 24,789, with 5,353 unique parts.

I don't have this yet but I'm planning to and will also put it on base plates so it can integrate with my modulars. My plan is to limit the base plate dimensions to the standard 32x32. Originally, I was going to put the rear on two 8x16 plates and the front on two 8x16 + one 16x32 plates. But I soon realized that by putting the chimney flushed with the edge, the hinges and nearby windows will actually protrude over the edge and make it hard to connect to an adjacent building. Ug. I've seen other modifications where the house is put on a 32x32 base plate and the opening is made possible by putting tiles under the opening part of the house. But when the house is fully opened, the opened portion is elevated and has nothing below to support it, which puts a lot of weight on the hinges. I'm thinking I'll simply going to create a mostly-tiled base for the house and when it need to be opened, it has to be lifted off the base. Or maybe some hybrid design where the rear of the house is on tiled 2 x 8x16 plates that can be manually moved to support the elevated half of the house.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
badbob001 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I think people have different reasons for getting into the modulars. The FB may attract CITY fans since it can integrate with their existing sets, but it may not attract other fans that may see it as being playset-oriented. Since only one modular comes out each year, it is also likely that it is the latest set of each year that is the entry point for new users. I have been eyeing the Modular series but wasn't ready to commit. But then when the PR came it, it was so fantastic that I got hooked and starting buying up the previous sets. Funny thing is that I still don't have the PR yet, mainly because there is less urgency to get it since it will be a while before it's retired. Maybe when 3x VIP points occur again... As for the future, I would love to see a corner diner with booths, jukebox, wrap-around counter, and stools. Something very Norman Rockwell. Good place for taking a date to have milkshakes after seeing a movie at the PC. The stickers and glow-in-the-dark bricks must cost a lot. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

I consider the Town Hall computer a design flaw and I can see these sets representing an early-20th century town. When I have the Town Hall built, first thing I'll try to do is replace the computer with a typewriter. -
Did you mirror the layout of the Haunted House when building it? Any particular reason for that?

Since the roofs should fit on the first floor, one could create a separate town of shrunken buildings.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
badbob001 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
The modular sets are not known for The modulars are not known to have well designed vehicles. The ones in the Fire Brigade and Palace Cinema are just bare-bone enough to serve their function. I would only expect well-designed vehicles in the normal City line. -
This is a pretty good program and much easier to use than Mathlab/Octave solution I had tried before. A good way to speed up your search is to reduce the number of vendors in the search pool. If your search has low quantity parts that many vendors have, then it may help to increase the quantity. Product suggestion: in the summary page with the vendor breakdown, please list the total number of parts to be ordered from each vendor. So when I load all the items into my cart from a particular vendor, I can easily tell that I have everything by comparing the parts total in the shopping cart with the per-vendor parts total on the summary page. For example: ... Match # 1 : $ 68.60 ($ 16.58 [320 items], $ 33.33 [23 items], $ 12.17 [12 items], $ 6.52 [200 items]) ... Brickstore01 (1234), 320 items ... Brickstore02 (1235), 23 items ... Brickstore03 (1236), 12 items ... Brickstore04 (1237), 200 items ...

I guess I better pick up the Haunted House on the next double points sale.

Another Star Destroyer is coming out this year so it makes sense to retire the SSS so as to not cause confusion.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
badbob001 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Maybe LEGO should expand the 16x32 building concept it had with the Pet Shop set and produce 16x32 lower-priced modular building sets. I've seen many paintings of streets packed with colorful and distinctive shops and it may be a delight to have a row of these. I can imagine LEGO releasing two to four of these a year and they can be grouped by location themes (paris, italy, chinatown, new york, etc). As with the recent PR set, architecture is important but more attention is focused on the little details that relate to people's lives and their stories. The smaller sets will allow more details to be packed together. I think having so many varied-styled buildings packed together really gives a sense of change and progress. Maybe some standard can be made so that the upper parts of the buildings can be rearranged with each other. I was thinking about the set box and it would look a bit weird showing a narrow building where the sides are rather plain. But they could pose the box vertically and show a straight photo of the building that fills the box frame completely. If you then line up other boxes from the theme, it would look like a row of buildings (now you have a reason to keep these boxes). For this effect to work, they probably need to release at least three of these sets together. Ah, wishful thinking. -

I have cracked and chipped Duplo pieces to prove that LEGO bricks can break, especially when thrown from across the room.- 64 replies

Has anyone used an Ikea Alex drawer cabinet for LEGO storage? The shallow drawers combined with drawer organizers or bins seems like possibly a good fit for a reasonable price. And it looks classy compared to regular all-plastic drawers. It would ideal if IKEA sold larger map/blueprint storage drawers. $119.00 Product dimensions Width: 26 3/8 " Depth: 18 7/8 " Height: 26 " Width: 67 cm Depth: 48 cm Height: 66 cm

Slot in headlight brick: crack stopper?
badbob001 replied to badbob001's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Actually, looking at my cracked headlight bricks, most of them are cracked on the opposite side of the slot, which means the slot is probably there for reasons unrelated to cracks. If there exists a stronger type of plastic than ABS, then I suggest they make all the headlight bricks (and other fragile pieces) with it. -
Slot in headlight brick: crack stopper?
badbob001 replied to badbob001's topic in General LEGO Discussion
So the slot serves no other purpose? Like to hold a cardboard piece or some obscure clip on? Then basically it's a sign that LEGO has given up on preventing the cracks and is just trying to limit complaints. I wonder if the plastic has gotten weaker (I've had some that cracked out of the box), or I didn't really check when I was a child, or certain colors are weaker (there are certainly more colors now than in the past). -
I've noticed that headlight bricks very easily develop a hairline crack from the front bottom edge. Most headlight bricks also have a slot cut right above that problematic edge. Is the purpose of the cut to keep the crack from propagating further? If so, I'm not sure how I should feel about the bag of cracked headlight bricks that I have and if I should re-integrate them back into my builds. Why doesn't LEGO have a strong companion (not replacement) version of the headlight brick where the SNOT stud is not indented and thus keeps the bottom thicker and sturdier? I know there are bricks with the stud on the side but they lack the hole on the opposite side.

My dream would be my modular sets arranged in a city block configuration and placed in a uv-blocked glass/plastic enclosure that can double as a coffee table. It would be interesting presenting life from inside a city block.

What about these standards: The middle floor can be duplicated and stacked to create taller buildings. A by-product of the above rule, the roof/top floor can be stacked directly to the first floor (midget buildings!). [*]Each floor must be practically accessible by minifigures (stairs, elevators, etc).

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
badbob001 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
A building (library?) with brick-built lions in the front would go well with the Ghostbusters set, but I would probably not like a set that was all white or gray. It may work if it were done as one of two 16x32 buildings like the Pet Shop set. -
Heavy MOD & Light MOD: Fire Truck and Fire Brigade
badbob001 replied to BraselC5048's topic in LEGO Town
Can anyone explain how the pump outlets were done? At first it seemed obvious but then how does half of the silver grill plate disappear? I was think it's a 1x2 bracket, but I don't think those normally come in red. -
To be frank, I would not have considered collecting the Modular sets if I didn't already have a place in mind to store or display them.

I have the Green Grocer, Fire Brigade, and Cafe Corner side by side and it looks like the Cafe Corner is undersized.
