Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
badbob001 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
The brickset page has a higher resolution version of the back. Now you can see the detective lurking around like a creepy stalker! So the mystery doesn't involve coins at all but cookies and candy. The wanted poster shows a person in a cap! Still have no idea how the rooftop barrel of cookies makes its way down to the pool hall. There is an awful lot of mail and letters around. Probably waiting for the Post Office modular to be built. The same can be said of the $100 bills all around... waiting for a proper bank. -

It's a fire escape, so it's ok to access it from a window. -

I don't think the top floor of the blue building is an apartment, even though it has a kitchenette: No bed. No door, so it's public access. Plunger may indicate it's a rest/storage area for workers. I'm very curious how the fire escape works. It doesn't look like there are stairs like in the green grocer, but there may be just a ladder on the side. The ladder probably extends a bit toward the street but needs a hand to get up to. Maybe the blue piece in the office is a release mechanism to lower the ladder. Still not sure how to get to the fire escape from inside the building, but perhaps from the window next to the bathroom. -

The low-res photo of the back of the box is driving me crazy because it shows so many details but they are just fuzzy enough to make them undecipherable. Observations: Detective Office: Swordfish hanging above window? Hidden item/safe behind picture? Lighted-sign outside of office window, a typical setting in movies. Nice Banker's lamp. Cat knows how to use the toilet? Case of the missing Misses Buttersworth? I think the entrance to the 2nd floor balcony is from the office and not the blue/red building. I suspect there is some sort of hinged doorway/window. I would be disa Is the detective putting money into his safe? Or a green frog? Pool Hall: Is that a ceiling fan? Blue Building: What is in the pot that the two blue guys are looking at? Soup? Or Coins/diamonds? General: The middle part is not really a typical alley. It's more like an atrium/lobby. It has some steps up from the front and some steps down from the back. Perhaps it also leads to a central staircase that runs up the entire building. What are all those blobs in the lot behind the building? Giant rats? From the front, it looks like the detective is following coins. The back shows the red-cap man putting something in the roof chimney(?) and it ends up somehow going down to the first floor and into the pool hall. A mechanism to get coins to roll down some track or tube? In the scene where the barber is helping the police officer up, I have no idea what the arrows indicate. Perhaps the balconies are actually a fire escape and there is a drop-down ladder and a hatch to the roof. -

This looks interesting and I'm sure there will be plenty of details in and out to explore... but the thing that bothers me the most is the scale. It looks very scaled down and compressed compared to many of the other modulars. It feels less like a set in the another modular series and more like an 'expert' version of the Bike Shop series. *Maybe* if you get two sets and add another floor to the pool hall building and double the width of the barbershop building. Mikey likes it?! -

Market Street is actually the cheapest Modular Building and had the fewest pieces: Cafe Corner: 2056 pcs, $140 Market Street: 1248 pcs, $90 Green Grocer: 2352, $150 Design-wise, I think it's far below the quality of the in-house designed Modular. To me, it's like... the Back To The Future set of the Modular line. Lets hope all the bad eggs are behind us now. -

It's likely that any bricks/colors used would need to appear in an existing or 2015 set. Time to study the 2015 sets for clues. light yellow?: 41063 Ariel's Undersea Palace dark orange?/redish brown? masonry bricks: 70410 Soldiers Outpost light blue: 41073 Naida’s Epic Adventure Ship & 41094 Heartlake Lighthouse dark blue (roof): 41094 Heartlake Lighthouse, 41095 Emma's House, 31036 Toy and Grocery shop I predict that the barber shop (or any one of the buildings) will have a dark blue roof. Given all the related mini-doll sets, I hope the modulars don't go mini-doll as well! -
I didn't realize that the calendar was in-store only. It doesn't explicitly say that on the monthly calendar but I can confirm that it's not added to my cart when I add more than $75 worth of items. This is depressing.

Last year, on the saturday before good black friday (11/23), it was 3x points. No idea about this year, but they are offering the 2nd holiday free set from only Nov 28 - Dec 1 only. It's possible LEGO may consider the free holiday set for 4 days only to be special enough to replace any VIP promotions. I hope not. http://www.fbtb.net/...ve-holiday-set/

After the luke-warm reception of the BTTF set, Lego should be suspicious of LEGO Ideas entries where fan may be voting for the license and not voting for the design. Maybe entries should have two voting scales: one for concept and one for design. So if an entry is not selected, a high concept rating with a low design rating will encourage others to create better designs based on the same concept. Since this will be a licensed set, the minifigures will not be yellow, which is unfortunate for those of us just interested in the parts. I hope they at least keep the skin-color off the rest of the body so those parts can be re-used easily. And a sure way LEGO can kill much of the buzz over this set: stickers. :)

I don't watch the show (only because I have too many other shows to watch and it seems like I would be many years behind if I started now) but I will probably still get this if it is detailed enough. Maybe I can use it to furnish the 2nd or 3rd floor of the Cafe Corner.

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Series 13 Rumours and Discussion

I thought the white-ish person between the king and the sheriff was the space trooper. But I guess that could be the paleontologist (looks like the jungle explorer from series 2). -

Seems like a fair number of recycled ideas and parts. Does it look like the Space Trooper is simply the parts from the recent classic white spaceman freebie with armor bits slapped on? LEGO is getting more efficient at re-using current stock and selling the creations back at us. Maybe they get inspiration from what kids create at their LEGO store build-a-minifigure stations. -
This is why a nice roomy cabinet is much better than a protective shield over each one. A cabinet also offers more room to modify the layout and add things over time. But I don't want to spend thousands of dollars on a cabinet. There is a place for storing and a place for playing, and not everything needs to be out for playing at the same time. If the floor becomes the default for both playing and storing, then my marriage will be in trouble. :)

Sorry to bring this topic back but I'm now out of space for storing my buildings! When I don't have a place to put a build, I'm reluctant to build anything. And that is bad. I've seen a lot of example of them being stored out in the open and that is a big no for me because of dust and uv. If I had a lot of space, I would have a large transparent coffee table with all my modular insides in a city-block configuration. But practically, I would settle for a wide glass cabinet so I can put my modulars side-by-side. The problem is finding such a cabinet and one that is affordable. The IKEA DETOLF glass cabinet is inexpensive, but is vertical, meaning each building would be isolated. I wonder would it work if I put it sideways. The following cabinet photo I found on the web looks almost ideal, but I have no idea where to get it: There is a company in the UK that sells these open-bottom boxes to drop over each building. It's an interesting idea, but not that flexible. It's also expensive with each box selling for $53-$62. And it's only sold in the UK. They remind me of the display cases at the LEGO stores, but at a much smaller scale. Or maybe I should be on the lookout for stores that are closing and are selling their furniture. Or be on the lookout for someone getting rid of a fish/snake tank. Or look for discarded windows and see if I can hinge them together into a box. Anyone seen any creative enclosures at LEGO conventions?

Dear LEGO, You've given us costumes for bunnies, lizards, gorillas, chickens, pigs, pandas, and now even unicorns. But what about the most basic animals like... cats? Specifically, I'm asking for cat ears on girl hair. It could even be just an add-on for Lego Friend's hair. We already have the tail from The Simpsons. And the sailor uniform from series 4. I'll buy an army of those! Thanks! xxxooo. -
It has to be lifted off the base before it can be opened. The only way to have the baseplates open with the house is to have the hinges at the very edge but then the protrusion of the hinge would make it not flush with the adjacent modular. I've seen solutions where the house back slides open on a stationary base, but I didn't like half the house to hang on its hinges. Maybe if I have the rear base slide out a bit on rails before opening, but I'm not ready to design that puzzle box just yet.

Is there any website which can show me bricks I have?
badbob001 replied to Kalais's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I use basebrick as well and it is especially useful if you normally buy individual parts like from bricklink. It certainly saves me a lot of time when ordering parts to do a quick check on basebrick to see if I have the parts already instead of digging through my collection. You even have the option to export your collection to a tab-delimited file if you want view in it a spreadsheet program. -
With Halloween coming up, I finally got around to finishing my witch on a broom design. For the longest time, I had trouble getting the legs to look right, but with inspiration from this post, I got something I'm mostly happy with. And the idea for using the bush for part of the broom came from this Kiki MOC, though it is more Miniland scale. In case you haven't guessed, it's based on the anime Kiki's Delivery Service: Actual photos: How it was built: There is a short bar connecting the bush to the dome, a long bar that goes from the dome through the round brick, 1x1 technic brick, headlight, and cone. I wish the LEGO friends hair bow came in red instead of magenta. My next plan is to come up with a gaggle of witches in different colors, most likely in blue and dark green. My color choices are limited by the available colors for the 1x2 plate with a slope. I did try a 1x2 plate with a cheese slope, but it didn't look as good. It's good that my investment on all those series 10 captains (with the seagulls) finally paid off. :) I'm surprised that I could not find any minifigure-scale MOCs of someone actually sitting on a broom. Mostly I see the poor guy hanging on for dear life by just his or her arms. I'll see if this side-saddle position works for bicycles or horses. Full size images at flickr.

Add photos to original post. It looks okay, but I think the residents of the house will be very pissed that their side windows are now facing brick walls. If I had the PR built, that may be a better fit next to the HH. When LEGO comes out with a corner modular, I'll rebuild it as a non-corner and give the sides a little more space.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

It only gets worse: 2.5.5 Make us browse and shop on bricklink, picking out parts we may or may not need for possible MOCs. Sure sure, I'm glad for this lull so I can work on my MOCs. Of course I haven't started on any since I'm still shopping for parts. No, I don't have any concrete designs yet, but I'm sure I'll get inspired by the parts. What? I'm not just shopping for shopping's sake. I'm researching. Exploring. Oh, I don't have this part! Or do I? <mumble>Need to sort those piles eventually...</mumble> Huh? I can stop at anytime! It's no big deal at all. But excuse me while I update my Wanted list. -
LEGO has only released three corner modulars and a fourth is needed for a complete city block. This is where the Haunted House comes in since it CAN be easily turned into the fourth corner. The set itself is mainly kept the same but a new base is created to represent the corner sidewalk. It is designed so that one can simply lift the house off the base plate and play with it as normal (it still opens). I have it built (for Halloween!), but not quite ready to photograph so here's a rendering: The walls were inspired by this and the sidewalk by this. Changes to original set: Removed bottom hinge plate from chimney since it interfered with the wall. Changed the bottom floor plates to follow the outline of the house. Shifted the side-stairs. The major challenge was getting the main gate to line up with the front door. I like how the original way the gates are positioned, but I had to compromise. And when LEGO comes out with a real fourth corner modular, it would be easy to convert the sidewalk to a non-corner layout (like this). Update: actual photos : See them full size on Flickr.

What could work is to use a lower shelf for a subway line. And ninja turtles.
