I've said this on many other topics (even here) countless times before, but I think that track-less, Power Function-less three-in-one Creator sets are the way to go for cheaper train sets. Just simply do US $40-$60 sets with a small locomotive as the star build (tank engines or shunter diesels, for instance), then include instructions for two passenger/freight car alternate builds to encourage others to buy multiple copies of the set (if they wish).

This really, really needs to happen, as City has no room for so many other trains and locomotives beyond what are still currently operational on railways today. Plus, like you just said, sets can also encompass many railway related buildings such as signal houses. Now I'd imagine such a theme would have a more limited retail release, somewhat like the Speed Champions theme, with probably only four to six sets a year. If a standalone theme isn't viable in any way at all, at least Lego should do a single train/locomotive set under the non-Expert Creator theme per year, preferably priced under US $100 most of the time.

Not enough CMF series a year? CMF Rota Discussion
Digger of Bricks replied to Anonknee Muss's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Technically, he was supposed to be a modern retake on a Classic Spaceman (you know, these guys), only with an added retro raygun to compound his standing as a Sci-Fi archetype, differentiating him from a more realistic astronaut archetype.- 72 replies

Lack of original themes
Digger of Bricks replied to General Magma's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Now there you bring some great proof that Lego hasn't completely abandoned traditional action/adventure genres, as at least they seem like they are trying to reinterpret/incorporate them into a successful preexisting theme. I guess that may also tell you that Lego has determined that standalone themes based upon those genres just aren't viable currently. The only downside though, is that City's realistic, modern context means there's no room for more Sci-Fi/Historically based interpretations of those genres. But still, with that reasoning, that's why I speculate that we might see a moonbase subtheme of City as a homage to Classic Space in the near future, as the current retail landscape just might not support a standalone Classic Space theme currently. Wow. Put into that perspective, that's pretty sad, as Lego is releasing nearly twice as many sets than they did almost a decade ago, but with even less in-house theme variety. -
At least regarding the Knights, I think that's just Lego recycling a sort of Power Rangers formula that has been applied to other themes' heroes in the past, themes such as Ninjago and Bionicle for instance.

Lack of original themes
Digger of Bricks replied to General Magma's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Same here. Every single point. I believe 2015 was probably the last time we saw any traditional and/or smaller scaled action theme, with both the introduction of Lego's last incarnation of Pirates and the final wave of the Ultra Agents theme seen during that year. It's the smaller scaled action themes I miss the most, such as lines like Monster Fighters, Pharaoh's Quest, Dino, Power Miners, and Atlantis for instance. Then there are all the many subthemes of Space, an action theme category unto itself. Yup, because in a landscape of themes barren of any archetypical storylines or characters, the CMS line was our only relief. Now that well is even running dryer. -
Not enough CMF series a year? CMF Rota Discussion
Digger of Bricks replied to Anonknee Muss's topic in Special LEGO Themes
If only one "regular" series a year, as opposed to three a year, can insure much more well thought out designs and less archetype repetition, then I guess that would be most definitely justified.- 72 replies

Not enough CMF series a year? CMF Rota Discussion
Digger of Bricks replied to Anonknee Muss's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Well, while some of those archetype repeats may be to give us a counterpart of the opposite gender or one of a different time period, I guess we do see a lot of repeats that otherwise could be filled in with numerous other never-yet-seen archetypes. For instance, Just look at all of the archetypes that are presented in @Robert8's custom CMSs. Still, none of those repeats annoy me as much as costumed character CMFs do. Food suit guy this, animal suit guy that, I mean, what's the point? The thing is about the concept of comic based DC or Marvel CMS lines, is that Lego manages to stick any sort of variant of a particular character into whatever set scenario they wish anyway. Unlike movie based sets, comic based ones don't necessarily need to be based upon a particular scenario presented in the graphic novel or comic saga which that version of the character was presented in. Hmm, that's an interesting approach.- 72 replies

I don't know, I feel that Disney will likely have this next trilogy kicking off by 2021. It's not set in stone exactly, but it seems like they a pattern set up for a saga instalment released every other year, with a anthology film filling in each gap year. After 2019's Episode IX, Disney will likely have the Obi Wan solo film releasing the following year (as of this writing, that not official, yet); and given how fast the Force Awakens came out after their acquisition of Lucasfilm (a little more than two years), this fourth trilogy may be here sooner than we realize.

LEGO Collectable Minifigures Future Series Rumours
Digger of Bricks replied to r4-g9's topic in Special LEGO Themes
One particular license Lego already utilizes that I don't see much interest in from EB members is Minecraft. Even my prior guess seemingly has more of a fan base here than Minecraft does I think. -
Well, specifically, I was talking about the mechanic's shop. I guess maybe I'm just biased, but I wouldn't have ever thought we'd see a mechanic's shop done within the Friends theme, as I would've presumed that's something Lego would have only done for themes such City.
-
While I wouldn't have any particular interest in either one myself, two franchises I could plausibly see getting CMSs for in the future would be for Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon (the latter one only being possible if Lego were to regain the license from Mega Construx). Much like Disney, I think that licensed Collectable Minifigure lines with a broad scope have the potential for a longer life span than a line based upon a single movie or TV show within that franchise. I mean, imagine if we got a CMS based a single Disney movie as opposed to the broader line we did get. Plus, a series with a broader context can be a vehicle for characters from movies/TV shows that otherwise don't have enough current relevance to stand alone. Granted, without a more specific CMS, fans of a particular movie or TV show may not see a broader series give them specific side characters, therefore perhaps making them wish that Lego had never even bothered to touch upon that property to begin with.

Not enough CMF series a year? CMF Rota Discussion
Digger of Bricks replied to Anonknee Muss's topic in Special LEGO Themes
But the thing is, the "regular" CMS line gives us figures of archetypes from themes and genres that may currently or never be viable to base an entire line of sets upon. For instance, I don't believe Lego will ever give us an in-house theme based upon Ancient Rome, so that's where the traditional CMS line is a good compromise. With licensed themes though, I don't think consumers would prefer a CMS line based upon a particular franchise over a line of sets focused on that same property, as I'm sure both would sell well either way if there does happen to be an interest in that license in the first place. I'm not saying Lego should do away with licensed CMSs, only that "regular" CMSs should be prioritized since they house genres that don't have a home within a theme.- 72 replies

LEGO Ideas Discussion
Digger of Bricks replied to The Real Indiana Jones's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I don't think it's something that could ever be measured, but yes, I myself have always wondered how much AFOLs make up the member base of Ideas. Naturally, I'd imagine that it's a pretty small fraction, with most members probably being fans of any particular project's source material as opposed to the Lego brand itself. -

Creator and Creator expert wishlist
Digger of Bricks replied to Ondra's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Does anyone think that the Creator theme could use a second subtheme, particularly one that sits in between the typical three-in-one theme and the Expert subtheme in age range? Whereas Creator has a suggested age range of 6 to 12 and Creator Expert has a suggestion of 16 and older, I'd like to see a new subtheme suggested for ages 13 and upwards, with sets that feature slightly more complex construction techniques and a richer color variety. The price range of this line of sets would for the most part stay seated within a US $50-$100 range, and like the three-in-one Creator theme, could include instructions for alternate builds. Set subject material would also be aimed towards interests relevant towards that targeted age group, drawing inspiration from realistic subject material to fantastic subject material. -
Future Action and Adventure Themes
Digger of Bricks replied to Peppermint_M's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
The only two times we've ever seen subterranean action themes were with the Rock Raiders and Power Miner themes, and both of them shared the same type of storyline goal and adversary. So, instead of miners seeking a power source only to be faced with rock monsters, how about an underground action theme focused upon a team of deep earth miners who discover a cavern inhabiting the ruins of a bygone subterranean civilization, only to find out that their mining activity has unsettled the cavern's structural integrity. In a race against time, the miners start a salvage operation to save and document the former city's artifacts before the collapse of the cavern, all the while fending off the cavern's other inhabitants, giant mutant moles and other monstrous burrowing insects specifically. While I can see that happening, I don't think that Lego would ever do an in-house historical theme quite as dark as Pirates of the Caribbean, only slightly more grittier than their previous offerings. I think the same could be said for Castle, where maybe 2007's Castle theme is as dark as Lego would ever take such a in-house theme, never completely going over into Lord of the Rings territory atmospherically. -

Latest news about Lego animal moulds
Digger of Bricks replied to Roebuck's topic in Special LEGO Themes
An Irish Wolfhound would certainly be great, as they are such beautiful dogs. While mammoths have very sloped backs, the new body mold seen in the preliminary doesn't seem too sloped, so that very well could plausibly happen. Besides, it seems like it's only a matter of time before we see a Serengeti safari subtheme for City.- 6,013 replies
