Opinions on LEGO Technic Theme
JonathanM replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
A few other great B models of recent times would be 42053 and 42055. 42068 was pretty good too I think. Further back, 42024 jumps out as one that was a bit unexpected. -
[REVIEW] 42083 - Bugatti Chiron
JonathanM replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Great review Jim - photos are stunning as per usual - really appreciate the time and effort you put in to them all. I'm really looking forward to your reviews of the rest of 2018H2. I agree about leaving out the scoring - I never felt it really helped me decide on a set - rather the commentary was key. Thanks again! -
It's a way larger overhang than that - around 28cm or so.

LEGO Technic rainbow models
JonathanM replied to kraai's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
These are really cool! What a great idea. I think I like 42037 and 8860 best - they really pop in those bright colours. Great work! I'm going to remember these as an idea for my son when he's older :) -
The pump and valves are really nicely implemented - great work!

42080 Forest Harvester
JonathanM replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Could the use of the motor be because you're pumping up two cylinders at the same time, which would be a bit more work with a manual pump? Possibly also the reason for the L rather than M. Agreed that it's still a bummer as it increases the cost quite a bit compared to eg 42053.- 313 replies

42080 Forest Harvester
JonathanM replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I honestly don't get the complaints - both A and B model are good renditions of the real machines that @Ngoc Nguyen showed above, with the exception of colour. I reckon they're both excellent in this respect. Sure, the colour maybe isn't ideal, but I like that they're mixing that up a bit as well.- 313 replies

In addition the rear 'counter weight' moves in and out on a gear rack (operated from the knob at the rear), so there are 5 control knobs all up: The three at the sides are directly (or in the case of the bucket tilt, via a universal joint) connected to the 3 large LAs for bucket tilt, bucket raise and rear wheels up and down to tilt the machine forward/back. The one on top is steering (all four wheels), and the one at the rear is for moving the rear counterweight in and out (likely direct to a worm gear on the rack). Lastly, the panels on the rear counterweight opens up on either side (it doesn't appear to have a fake engine though). So fairly simple mechanically, but probably quite fun to play with. It'd be neat to see if it could be modded so the movement of the rear counterweight could be coordinated with the movement of the bucket.

[MOC] GAZ-3309 Truck

That's a neat idea for the cylinders. Really nice proportions on the truck. -

@vale Yes, I mentioned that to @Sariel in his thread. He built it correctly in Billund though, and that also seemed to have a similar (but maybe not as great?) issue. Ideally the shocks need moving out another stud at the base (or in at the top). -
@Sariel By the looks the shocks on the front from your first build (speed build on YT) are vertical. I think they should be 1 stud further out at the bottom so they connect next to the 5L thin lift arms? You did it the correct way at Billund by the looks. Did you notice a difference between the two cars? I think to improve they should be further angled, but there doesn't look to be a lot of room to do that without more changes (it's an extremely dense build for an official lego build!) The videos are great BTW. The live build was really well put together, though the camera angles at from about 3 hours onwards were lacking quite a bit (the car was often in the way) - nothing to do with you though! I loved the banter/commentary with Ali + Aurelian.

Technic 2018 Set Discussion
JonathanM replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I think the only thing that 2018 'wins' over 2016 is the new pieces. 2016 had some great new pieces (e.g. the 2 axle 180 with pinhole, 3L axle with stop, 11L axle, and smooth 3L connector), but I think the ones in 2018 are even more useful for genuinely new possibilities with LEGO (new valve, new gear parts). The models from 2016 were better IMO than 2018. Sure, the Mac Anthem is great (and the garbage truck has to be the best B-model, maybe ever?) but I don't think 42082 breaks new ground like 42055 did, and while 42083 clearly improves on 42056, it's not really a step change (i.e. the functions pretty much the same, what has improved is the gearbox due to new parts, and a better panelling job). I don't think 42080 compares to 42053 (another excellent B-model) and 42081 has nothing on 42054. So yeah, if I had to choose, I'd take the 2016 sets over the 2018, as long as I can bricklink the new parts from 2018 too :) -
42083 - Bugatti Chiron

One thing the parts list clearly shows: there's not much use of alternate colours here at all. Only 5 lime green parts! :) -

@eric87 It's dark azure. Same as 42070, 42077, 42074. @SNIPE The 2x5 panel is the small one (#21, #22). -

Looks like a standard forward/reverse switch in the cabin. I guess the 7 gears is then done via paddles on the steering wheel. Hopefully not functional for reverse... Yellow suspension in the front like the rear (2 springs per side as expected). Looks like 3 crankshafts confirmed (there's 9 tan crank offset pieces and 6 yellow crank pieces). Really nice panelling at the rear. Less well done at the front - seems possibility for improvement there I think. I don't like the use of stickers to sculpt the tan "leather" on the dash, but that would have been hard to do otherwise I guess! Otherwise sticker use seems very restrained. -
42080 Forest Harvester
JonathanM replied to Ngoc Nguyen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Weird that this has an L-motor given all the other pneumatic compressors (with the exception of 42043, which also had direct drive operations) have had M-motors. Not that I'm complaining - would much rather another L than an M!- 313 replies

I think the photo and instructions show opposite sides, so each orange selector seems to drive 2 driving rings each? The new pieces are going to mean lots of new possibilities for gear boxes. ? -

Lets talk color vomit
JonathanM replied to aminnich's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The problem with numbered bags is it only works for the first build. After that you've got a nice big pool of a few thousand pieces again. The recolours help the latter and the former. -

Agreed - that's what stands out for me in that image. An improved wheel pivot, or just bad steering angle? Hoping for the former obviously! EDIT: And A+ handling of the hype by Lego!
