Technic 2018 Set Discussion
JonathanM replied to Jim's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
It need only be 5L (1 for valve, 2 for connector, 0.5 for bush, 1 for cog, 0.5 left), which is a part that already exists, so is the most likely. If it was 7L then it'd be going through the black bent liftarm plus something else behind it, which would be most strange IMO. -
I like it. I wonder if you could have the slots of the 2L connector on the inner pentagon facing out to line up with the outside pentagon markers (presumably these mark every 3 seconds and half a minute). A slight pity that the number of hours doesn't divide nicely the number of minutes (like 60/12) - 6 minutes to the hour would work nicer from the markings point of view, but be a lot more boring with a hexagon instead of pentagon :)

The new valves would be more versatile if there's also an axle hole out the top, but there doesn't seem like there'd be enough plastic for it. Still, a good improvement on the current IMO. -

Yeah - a large turntable on those pins - you should really be able to see the black cog part of it, but I think it's just all in shadow. The DBG panels are quite far apart (11L - 13L maybe?) which masks it perhaps. The 5x7 frame fits exactly in front of the turntable, so I'm pretty sure that's where it is. -
Technic 2018 Set Discussion

It's really strange. The cab and crane arms are obviously rotated away from the front portion of the base. You can see that the DBG panels are skewed away from the green 15L beams. The beams are also 7 studs apart, while the white technic bricks for the crane base are 9 studs apart, yet the right hand one appears inside the right hand beam (it's likely off the back, rotated around). I wonder if there's a large turntable in the 5x7 frame at the front (the frame is at between the 15L green beams - you can just see a sliver of the bottom edge under the lights below the cabin). You can also see that the double front lights are rotated slightly away from the front of the frame as well. It's far more at the back, suggesting the turntable is in that front frame. I find it more interesting the more I look at it! -
It uses two sets of 2x1 triangles formed into a kite - the LBG pieces are half connectors so everything seems locked to me?

Yes. Half liftarms come in 2-5L with the end holes being axle holes, and in 5-7L with only pin holes. 6L are quite common, e.g. there are 9 yellow ones in 42053.

2 large 11L cylinders like on 42043,42053 and probably 1 small (can't see it in the picture, but it appears to rotate a set of knob wheels. The new valve is a welcome addition. It'd be nice if it is gradual rather than on/off like the current ones. This set is looking more interesting! What I find interesting is the mechanism to extend the boom. It seems to be via a knob on the left side (7L yellow axle at the end of the arm). I guess the 5x3 liftarms rotate up and over, flipping over some side arms which I guess could be part of a z-connection to the cutter head? Also, weird that they used a photo with the rear green panel not affixed properly, but I guess it's a prelim. -
Thanks for trying it out! Indeed, how it behaves is crucial - unfortunately I don't yet have the swashplate parts to build it complete - have just placed a bricklink order so I can build your great MOC. By the looks you used 3L liftarms from the hub to connector. I suspect 4L will be a bit more sturdy, so each axle hole of the connector is filled. It will also mean a smoother surface to avoid conflicts with the moving arms on the blades. Replacing the 3L crossblock with 2x 3L thin liftarms might help with that as well. EDIT: Have updated the last image above with another possible solution. Makes it a bit bulkier though. Lastly, it might also help a tiny bit with rigidity to use the 3L with 2L axle and 1L pin through the weapon barrel pieces (two up, two down) to tighten the hubs up a bit - the pins fit tighter in the weapon barrel pinholes. The weapon barrel part is available cheaply in black - agreed it stands out way too much at the moment.

Great entry! Instantly recognisable. @mocbuild101 I think it's the back of the cab that makes it look slanted forward a little? IRL the back seems close to vertical. Swapping out the 9L beam for a 5L and then a 4x0.5 beam below it might do it? -
Indeed. I find this sort of thing a lot of fun. I hope you don't mind, but I played in the brick with some further designs as well: These reduce the diameter by 2, 3, and 4 studs. You can reduce down to 5 studs diameter, but at the expense of more offset of the blades from center. I quite like the middle one - the pivots are exactly on center, so opposite blades are 2 studs offset from each other. The larger one has a nice symmetry, and opposite blades are just 1 studs apart. The smaller one is maybe too small - blades can pivot about 15 degrees towards the 24z gear on that one, and the axle is secured only on the one side due to the stack of 2x0.5 liftarms in the center. EDIT: Final? revision of the center one that makes it considerably simpler using a couple of weapon barrels. Plus changes location of tilting arm, perhaps to reduce vibration

Love how the curves are captured so well with the flex axles and panel combinations. The convertible roof is superb. Whoever commissioned this is getting a real treat. Instantly recognisable.

This is such an awesome design - will have to order those swashplate parts :) I wonder if this might work as a slightly less bulky top rotor (also slightly more rigid?), moving things in 0.5L. The ball joint placement would probably still need your current design due to the link lengths, but with this you could use 2L thin axles instead to bring the ball joints in another 1L. swashplate Or alternately this, bringing it in another 0.5L (uses the 24z gear like before)

Question about 42055 BWE
JonathanM replied to Hogwartus's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I count 14, so at least those are all present. Not sure there's enough panels and 7x5 frames though? -
42078 - Mack Anthem
JonathanM replied to AndroTech's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Not sure it's been mentioned, but Milan (@grohl) also did the tractor unit for the A model. Markus Kossmann did the trailer. This maybe helps explain why the building styles are a bit different between the two? Designer video here: -
Nico71's Creations
JonathanM replied to nico71's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The higher price I guess is also because they're guaranteeing they can get all the parts combined and then ship to the buyers location. They probably also carry a bunch of stock as well so need to cover that plus salaries/commissions etc. Seems _very_ reasonably priced to me. Those that know their way around bricklink and are in a location for cheaper shipping from multiple vendors would be expected to be able to do a cheaper option ofcourse, but that takes some time and time is money too! I can see that for lots of people, just being able to order instructions and parts together for a slightly premium price will be a great option. Great work Nico - have got it on my list to build :) -

@Didumos69 can you remove the bushes from your p4 to get it done with just 2 parts? Re the geometry, there's really only one basic operation: reflection. All others are just products (compositions) thereof. e.g. a rotation is a product of two reflections that are non-parallel: it makes a rotation of 2 times the angle of intersection about the point of intersection, with direction specified by the order of composition. Translation is the product of two parallel reflections (again two times the distance between the reflection planes). The third basic type of operation is the glide - basically a translation then a reflection in the axis of movement. All other operations are just combinations of these three. The 1 dimensional analogue of the wallpaper groups are frieze groups - 2D with repetition in just one dimension. There are 7 of those - no rotations allowed, other than by 180 degrees (two reflections at right angles) as all axes must be parallel or perpendicular with the axis of repetition - thus just translation in the axis of repetition, and reflection in the parallel and perpendicular axes (and the corresponding glides). -
