Alright here we go... One was a novelty, two is a lineage. Here's a(nother) ground-up redesign of a Lego Icons F1 model. Again, hat-tip to @bentobrick for some early inspiration and collaboration as we worked on reconstructing the kit build to get a representative base (I ended up scrubbing the speed-build on youtube pretty much frame-by-frame, that was nuts). The Williams set is a very promising second chapter for the Lego Icons series. They're definitely on to a fantastic concept. The colorway is bright and beautiful, the mechanical and bodywork details are quite sweet. Those properly staggered slick tire widths. Spotted straight away the much-too-short rear center, the truncated engine cover and the kind-of-too-forward nose bodywork. So let's get to to work... Like the McLaren 4/4 super-mod, this one’s pretty much all different as well. Reworked proportions with a longer wheelbase, widened track front and rear, a lower, redesigned floor with ‘tea-tray’ undernose detail. There’s a wider wing with angled flaps up front. Entirely new tub build with revised bodywork and additional active-suspension details. Tried to get the steering wheel jammed up under the front cowling so it's not crowding the cockpit but there's really no way to do it. Lengthened mechanical area with reworked engine and details; designed for pneumatic-hose headers to be added (inserted in the instructions, they're impossible to render in Studio). New sidepods with improved radiator details and internal ducting. Have a new roll hoop build with open air-intake which is separate from the lift-off rear bodywork. I'm particularly proud of the new aft sidepod vertical surfaces with those small trailing cooling ducts. New tail-box bodywork and underfloor diffuser builds along with less bulky rear wing flaps round things out. Uses most of the kit’s stickered parts as-is except the Canon graphics on the front wing which will need to be moved to 1x6 tiles. Instructions and a bunch of various parts-lists for kit parts used, new parts to add, and the full build are all up at my shop http://prototyp-brickworks.com, will be up on Rebrickable in a bit as well. 1/13ish scale 794 parts total 372 parts used from the 10353 set 422 parts to add Enjoy... Any wagers on what next year's F1 Icon will be? I've got a long wish list for sure...

In these examples, the printing aligns the "ƒ" foot graphic in the middle of the Good Year logo with the + orientation of the axle-hole. Mine arrive today, will check them and see if there's a pattern... If so, I would guess that's how the piece is stabilized for printing.

The Battleship. I've had this alt-history concept in mind for some time: what if road racing was the big-time in America - say a series called the American Road Racing Championship existed rather than NASCAR - and what if we had a bit of an earlier start on all the Aerospace Space program tech, aero, materials, engineering and the result was a bunch of Group 5/GT3-ish silhouette endurance racers in the early 60's? Rules were relatively open, the cars had to keep "recognizable production designs" in place for the roofline, fender/shoulder lines, the key elements of the front and rear facias, and had to use an engine from somewhere in the brand's portfolio. Loopholes were found of course, chief amongst which was the realization that the rules didn't explicitly stipulate these "recognizable" design details had to be kept in their original positions. This garnered some wild interpretations with fenders widened, noses and tails cut away for embedded wings and diffusers, rooflines narrowed, tapering and tilting to make the greenhouse more aero. Wild stuff. I've got sketches for sleekly-flared Falcons, full Moby-Dick-style Group 5-esque mid-engined Corvaires... First I wanted to take the most unlikely car and turn it into one of these raging hypothetical road race beasts. The early-60's Lincoln Continental has some gorgeous lines and a planetary-grade mass to it which I figured would be fun to chop away at. The nightmare love child of a Continental and an F1 car The Lincoln Continental ARRC is based on a non-production short-wheelbase two-door coupe styling concept and powered by a prototype Ford-Cosworth DFV engine being developed for Formula 1, run through a rear-mounted sports-car transaxle. The monocoque chassis features side-pod and rear-mounted cooling with massive diffusers both front and rear. There was so much planar surface and such a huge footprint for the underbody that the engineering team didn't see the need to fit a large rear wing, instead relying on the front nose-wing and rear deck fins to trim aero balance. Built up for the same 3DSuperCarBricks hosted comp which @danielsmocs created his Lancia Stratos for using 3DSC's superb custom-moulded windscreen part. 1100 parts 16s wide x 40s long Layers and layers of mechanical detail. Pushrod suspensions, ITBs, pneu-hose exhaust headers... There's no space left un-detailed. Uses a handful of new-ish parts but nothing too exotic. Buildable in a number of colorways (red, light gray, dark blue, black, white, dark gray... though sadly not a nice Mid-Century Sand Blue, Sand Green or Orange which looked amazing as renders) Fully modularized chassis built up around a central tub with separate front suspension/engine, separate sidepods, separate transaxle and rear suspension under fully removable bodywork. It's all very #racecar. I have some ideas for a brick-built A pillar in place of the 3DSC windscreen which should be possible, but those windscreens are available directly from 3DSC and - if you're in the States - I have a handful I'll be putting up on my site along with some wheel options. And oh, it sits. Pictures don't quite capture just how lurking and mean this thing is on the shelf or on a desk. Looking at it here it still makes me laugh at the madness of it. If you want to give it a build, stop by my shop https://prototyp-brickworks.com/products/lincoln-arrc-silhouette-instructions-1-15-scale As always, thanks for looking and thank you for the inspiration, Prototyp These photos and more up at Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/prototyp/ Stop by and say hi: https://instagram.com/prototyp_brickworks

Thank you Bento, appreciate the ongoing collab. Looking forward to your next work!

Here’s a super-mod of Lego’s 10330 McLaren MP4/4. I love that they're doing more detailed Icons series, love the historical F1 story arc… Having been a lifelong fan of high-detail kits like Tamiya’s 1/20 and 1/12 series I can’t help but see further potential in these Lego models. Started with @bentobrick Bento's fine mods to the kit’s nose and front wing, but couldn’t get past Lego's bulbous quarter-dome parts at the roll-hoop and the too-compact, funky proportions. Ended up changing everything about the model design. Dramatic changes to proportions with a longer cockpit and tub, shorter and redesigned center/fuel-cell cowling, longer rear engine cover, wider track, longer wheelbase. Fully redesigned build and architecture with a separate tub and driveline, a new build sequence. Wholly new tub, new floor, new sidepods, new engine build and details, heavily revised engine and sidepod cover, revised wings front and rear. It's a lot - and retains about half the kit's parts - but the result feels much more like a proper replica rather than the cute, toylike Lego set representation. If you wish to stay a bit closer to the kit's design and parts, I highly recommend checking Bento's mod up at Rebrickable. Sharing some renders for now, and will be doing a full photoshoot when the Williams sets arrive and I can poach the printed staggered wheel/tires. Instructions and parts lists available now at my shop http://prototyp-brickworks.com, will be on Rebrickable a bit later. Ps. I did a similar ground-up super-detail rework of the Williams FW14B I'm cranking through instructions for now... watch the Williams thread, Flickr or my Insta
-
Fantastic, Bento. The nose and engine cover are much cleaner... Really looking forward to this one. If you pub instructions, I'm in. (I just wrapped up a massive super-detail redesign of the rest of the 4/4 around your set of front-wing, nose-cowl, and rear suspension mods. It's pretty epic, but have to wait till these new wider-rear wheels are available to call it done)
-
Whoa! Yea... that's a 2x4 for sure! Looks like several models have them: spotted in black, dark blue, and Red. With any luck they'll be available unprinted (assuming these curved parts aren't stickered in the kits...)

Nicely done Brickmonkey! Have long had fixing the Valkyrie on my to-do list, your updates dial in those key issues; shorter front center, lower overall. Nailed it.
-
Gotta pace the leaks, lol... I'm sure it's out there. (Verrry interested in what color Lego choose for the V12 Vision, could they pull off a hypercar in Olive green?)

Good eye, certainly looks like it... That could be more of them on the leading points of the two raised hood shapes as well (where you have the 6091 curved-top brick in your sketch). Also, woo new yellow curve-slopes and fenders! Hope they snuck some 2x1 cut tiles on there as well. The G Wagen, eh... Guess I just don't like the Speed Champ SUV's. Fender builds look clever, could be fun, but that hood seems crazy tall/bulky.

That’s so cool of them to do. Makes these great alt-build parts-packs… Picked up all four sets, have built the McLaren. I enjoyed the build, nice compact techniques with excellent shaping to the wing, sidepods, engine cover area. New wheels are cool. The tire material is super interesting and the Pirelli print is excellent, but they look very undersized for the model’s scale.

This is wonderful news. I was worried about being stuck with odd sides then waiting months/years for the other side to become available as has happened before. Briefly saw some of the twinned tiles were tucked deep in the builds, that's nice... Do the LMP's 4x1 cut-tip slopes have their pairs hidden somewhere? (upper surfaces above the headlights, black-left white-right)

There we go. Thank you... nice work on the custom parts hacks, btw. I had thought about doing that as well but at this point, hopefully we're close enough to the release and subsequent LDraw team efforts that I should just patiently keep busy on other projects. (oh... but... the new parts!! lol...)

Yep... Honestly looking forward to these new F1 models. Nice to see the new parts in virtual form... Are those in LDRAW, Mecabricks, or your own work? Have been hunting the Ldraw team's file activity since the first pics of the new models showed up, but might have missed them. Itching to start working these parts into mocs... Guessing the answer to this is "not yet" but feel I should ask: Do we know what the part numbers might be: 4x1 cut-tip slopes right and left (sidepods) 2x2 compound curves right and left (wing surfaces) 2x1 cut-tip tiles right and left?

Cheers, thank you so much. Design was mostly engineered digitally in Bricksmith where I can make a mess of translucent parts to help visualize connections, fixed points, hinge-points, critical structures, check for conflicts and overlaps. Would be so difficult to get all the intertwined connections and structures wound together without either huge amounts of iteration (as you've done) or by being able to see into and through the designs... That said there are always refinements that come from building the thing a few times. Your Octan build is very much a cousin to this one. Would be very cool to do a few more LMP-era open-top cars, tbh... Or really any of the modern prototypes. (I do have a Audi R18 model 99% done and in the cue to shoot and post. It's outrageous.)

TLDR: Super-detailed fully-modularized Creator-scale 16-wide MOC build of beautiful 1999 Le Mans-winning FIA LMP prototype. 903 pieces (including 3 round-plates-with-strings, 6 whips, and 8 “non-Lego” custom wheel parts). 1/15.2 scale: 16 stud wide, 38 stud long, 23 stud wheelbase Winner - with a bit of luck - of an exceptionally rough and tumble 1999 Le Mans in the hands of Joachim Winkelhock, Pierluigi Martini, and Yannick Dalmas. The LMR was the second iteration of BMW’s LMP car, designed and constructed by BMW with Williams F1, powered by a development of the BMW S70 V12 which the McLaren F1 had used to win Le Mans a few years prior. Longtime BMW racing partner Schnitzer Motorsport ran the team at Le Mans proper as well as in the American Le Mans series. The low and sleek car looked like a ufo compared to the competition. The LMR has a fairly simple and compact shape, but it’s not a brick… the subtle lines are quite refined and put up a challenge to capture smoothly in Lego. The entire nose build is a circus of surfaces all at slightly different angles, their mountings dotted here and there in precise positions over the tub structure. The roll-hoop and engine hump cowlings are jammed full of more angles and curves. The rear fenders tumble and taper back to those extremely compact multi-directional-snotted wing mount and taillight assemblies. The sidepods look simple but are full of some connections voodoo for their multi-hinged lower surfaces. The car's so slim there's really nowhere to hide much supporting structure. Wheel inserts and brake discs are designed in Cinema4d and fit into the back axle tubes of Lego's Icons wheel #42716. The spoke shape, offset and hub proportions were refined through a sequence of paper prototypes to dial in their scale, then the final design was high-resolution SLA resin printed and sprayed with Tamiya TS38 gunmetal (as are the backs of the Lego wheels). Graphics are a mix of printed stickers and cut vinyl. It's not quite perfect: the indigo color-shift blue vinyl turned out a bit too dark - needs a much larger surface area and strong light to really sparkle - and those delicate air-flow pinstripes need to be metallic on transparent substrate so the different white materials aren’t as noticeable. The open cockpit captures various details; Pi/BMW M digital dash, switches panel, electronics boxes all carefully studied, drawn in Illustrator, and shrunk down to scale. (I forgot to do the Emergency markings, so these are swiped from a 1/24 model and comically small) The rear bodywork is a large single assembly that lifts off, revealing that glorious V12. The rear wing and trailing edge of the bodywork (with those complex little taillights) is cantilevered off the end of the transmission. The intake airbox assembly lifts off to reveal 12 intake trumpets, the oil tank and engine ancillaries. Getting the radiators attach at angles flush with the wing plates on the ends of the sidepods was a triumph of Lego maths... A few stickers for the radiator faces and the cam covers provide some texture. The sidepods, splitter, and engine drivetrain are all separate from the tub following the construction and design typical of these cars; the bare chassis of these masterpieces of design and packaging is one my favorite views… The tub itself has a raised footbox with a rounded 'boat prow' profile which helped to channel airflow from the upswept nose underside out through the open sidepods. The remaining flat floor continues back to under the rear axle where the shallow diffuser tunnel kicks up. As always, thanks for looking and thanks for the inspiration, Prototyp These photos up at Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/prototyp/ Stop by and say hi: https://instagram.com/prototyp_brickworks

There's already the Aston Vantage coupe from 76910, so it's a fair point Lego might want to shake it up. The DBX707 suv "Safety Car" is entirely plausible (technically it's the Medical Car...). So far Lego's SUV models have kinda been stinkers, with exception of the brilliant Bronco. (If it is the DBX I hope they've come a long ways from the Jag iPace and Urus builds)

Was curious about these new funky wide wheels so did a quick Photoshop overlay with the recent low-profile co-moulded SC wheels. Assuming the outer diameters are the same, it looks like a 2x2 tile should fit inside the rim of the new wheel. Looks like it might be tight, but appears in the margins of typical brick-to-brick gap. Hopefully it'll fit... That said, it would be cool if there was yet another new wheel-cover/turbo-fan/aero-disc part (there's a very slight difference in perspective between these two images, hence the slight misalignment... tried to focus on the centering of the tile and the new wheel to get a read on the fitment of a 2x2 tile and the 'brick-gap' typically kept as a minimum space between parts)

We're getting into the window now :) IIRC in the past there have been some early catalog leaks mid-December, also didn't someone pick up a set accidentally put out at a Target? Last wave, the official TLG pics and interviews all landed sort of December 31/Jan 1st ish ahead of the March release. - Not going to add to the list of wishes other than I'm hoping to see some interesting colors added to the lineup (Sand blue? Pearl Titanium? Maybe a return to Dark Blue or Bright Light Orange... can we see a Highlighter Yellow SC?). Stoked to see what (if?) new parts the team devises, always so fun to stare at the press images and suss out the new parts and clever techniques.

New LEGO Speed Champions 2023 Rumors, Speculation
prototyp replied to MTBingNinja's topic in LEGO Town
Thanks for this BrickMonkey... I had initially planned on lowering the windscreen/rear roof a plate but after building your mod I think achieves a similar tweak to the proportions and is /much/ simpler. Still a little tall, but good enough... Completely removed the yellow stripe on mine and swapped to the F8 windscreen, used pointy-slopes to finish the black hood insert, tweaked the chassis with cambered wheel mountings, and added deeper side-skirt shaping and a few aero bits inspired by the Novitec N-Largo. Fully agree this is a solid SC model with an enjoyable build and looks excellent all dialed in. (sorry about the gigantic images - no image-display controls here on Eurobrick?) -
So cool to see this model still getting attention. I ended up with a completely redesigned front and rear chassis (amongst a lot of of other things) to get the ride height lower. Essentially I've used technic beams to relocate the axles; legal and simple, but a ton of design iteration to arrive at. I've been asked for instructions a few times and have been poking at converting the LDR build and all its sub-assemblies into Stud.io but it's a massive job... likely won't happen soon. This is great intel, thank you. Couple more I was considering looking into build possibilities for are Lime, similar to the original concept's color, and they did a very nice blue - sort of between dark azure and normal blue.- 488 replies

New LEGO Speed Champions 2022 Rumors, Speculation

Games controller (unprinted, apparently). It's perfect for these modern 'yoke' style race-car steering wheels (I've been using it this way in my mocs since it became available, fwiw ;) Thanks for posting these... Watching these has definitely increased my interest and appreciation for the new models. The techniques at work are really impressive; all those short bars and open-stud plate connections to shift SNOT directions in the Ferrari for example - that's ace stuff.- 488 replies

Curious what y'all think this part might be? Thin walls, some kind of hole or indent. The height is interesting as it appears to be a full brick high (taller vertically than a single stud piece set in SNOT):- 488 replies
