Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
jus1973 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I've not seen it in the brick, as it were, but can it not be modded to look a bit more in keeping, whilst still keeping the essential exfirehouse nature of it? -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
jus1973 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Indeed Nothing lasts forever. It would be sad to see the modular line to finish, however, there is not a lot left to do. We have had places that serve food, places to buy goods, places to stay and places for recreation. Office blocks are not exciting, and the 'story' behind the later modulars, although not always popular, means that they are going in a play direction, not display direction. Maybe we'll get a police station as part of the Assembly Square, and they'll call it a day, as the last thing I can see them having on a 1920s-40s street. In the meantime, look at the inspiration it has given us all. I only have two modulars, Palace Cinema and Detective office, since I can't get hold of brick bank here, and Shop@Home has had issue for my location, but I have designed and built 4 modular style buildings on the same scale which I would never have done before. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Its also listed in the Brick by Brick app on iOS, which, whilst not made by Lego, does have almost all instructions in it, which wouldn't be allowed without Legos permissions, due to copyright laws, so must have some legitimacy from there, surely. -
I love the idea. Quirky humour helps too. If you'd made it with split floor like the modulars, then it'd be even better.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
jus1973 replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Apologies for the off topic. As for preference, I quite like the idea of having a regular straight modular that can be split in half. The corners only really work if you've space to show them in block format. I also like the idea of inventive small interiors, like the apartment in the DO. I'm not too fussed about the story based play features, such as the hidden panel in the barbers shop. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Thanks Swissbrick. Theres only one FCW within an hour of me, and it's quite small. They don't carry a great selection. Sadly the stores seem to be mostly in the German part, and I'm on the Vaud/Valais border up in the mountains. I'd be interested in how you avoided the Swiss post opening your boxes, and slamming their lovely taxes on. Of the three items I've ordered from shop at home in the last four years, each has been followed by the chf20 opening charge, and varying amounts of tax. The worst was my technic Arocs, which came to nearly 70, as it was shipped in a plain brown box, with no lego logos. Maybe it's because I'm in the mountains, that the delivery charge is insufficient. It's put me off as a 170 set becomes 220. -

I don't mind what it is, just that it's available more widely. Where I live we can only get the modulars from larger Manor stores (I'm in Switzerland, they're a department store, like John Lewis in the UK, or Bloomingdales in the US), and even then, the only models I've been able to locate this year have been the detectives office, and the cinema. Given I think that brick bank was 2015 model, its a bit annoying that you can't find it for sale. Shop at home is not an option as shipping and taxation add to the cost to a prohibitive level. -
Living in Europe, I'd never heard of this McMansions thing before. Saw a few this summer on my holiday to various areas of the US. Didn't know that they had a name for such badly designed houses. To the european eye, its almost as if the houses start off much smaller, and then get bits added over time, with little or no regard for the overall appearance. Something in Switzerland and the UK, that i know the local authorities work very hard to avoid, so we don't see so many. Definitely something to watch for as I've built a few modulars and haven't liked how they've turned out in the end. I suspect this sort of balance and symmetry might have been part of it.

Thanks for the link ER0L. has some good ideas for SNOT work, that i'm trying to get into, to make the facades of my buildings more interesting. Still working on the letters. Cheers

Hi all Just getting into MOC modulars, and have got the basic structure of the first 3 floors of a coffee shop/ bookshop, slightly inspired by a place I found in Bern. That one was inside a small covered area which used to be a backstreet. My MOC is a main road affair, and I'm looking to make a sign at the front somehow, with a model of a coffee cup, (Quite easy i think, and then the words "& a Book" next to it. I'm quite restricted on pieces. Does anyone have any ideas how to create letters. I've tried to use the same technique as that used in Al's barber shop, but the letters are often spaced too far apart. Any ideas or places to point me? I will get round to posting a thread for my MOCs on here at some points.

How to get 300-400 minifigs, variety, dups OK
jus1973 replied to monoraildayspast's topic in LEGO Town
I don't have much advice, but id be interested in the Lego event in Zurich. I'm in Vaud, near Montreux so depending on the day, I could drive up. Cheers -
Thanks all. I had looked at the book but haven't got round to ordering. I've got a very limited selection of bricks now, so looking for inspiration and ideas. I'll have a good look at the pages suggested. I was really wondering if there was a B Model group here, like there is for the C models in the technic forum.

Hi all Just got into the whole modular building idea after purchasing a couple of the predesigned models, Cinema, and Detectives office. I've had a bash a MOCing using the very limited parts I have to join them. I was just wondering if there has been much interest in creating B models and instructions, from the parts in the modular sets, which retain the modular rules?

Possibly a stupid question (about LDD)
jus1973 replied to jus1973's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
Thanks for all the helpful replies. Whilst being a builder for over 30 years, I've never worked digitally before. I'm trying to design models from just a handful of creator sets, and didn't fancy building half way to find i don't have the parts. I'll be doing just as you suggest with the my parts ldd file- 6 replies

Hi All As the title says, possibly a stupid question, but...... Is there a way to restrict LDD to only show the bricks that one might have, just by entering the Set Code from the sets you own. I'm new to LDD so please forgive me if this has been asked before. Thanks in advance.

[MOC] Simple Supercar
jus1973 replied to Lipko's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
A stunning MOC. I guess you're like me, build with what you have, and hope the colours don't look too bad when you finish. BTW LDD file has 2 parts placed incorrectly, so removed them. When i finally get round to having all parts for this, I'll figure out which ones and let you know. -
Caterpillar 390F + Tow Haul
jus1973 replied to shineyu's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I've not had much better luck avoiding this unless load is less than 1kg. I bet that machine is closer to 2.5.- 25 replies

That is a bargain. I managed to get a second one for 130CHF from Manor. 85 is a bargain. I know COOP were selling them cheap online. I do think that sometimes us Swiss residents pay more for our lego, as the CHF:EURO rate fluctuates so much.

Odd Technic Questions
jus1973 replied to DrJB's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This is very common in the euro market, for the UK, Cyprus and also Japan and Australia. save billions of dollars in manufacturing and development costs. In answer to the OP, the models are all LHD as designed but many (not all i believe) can be converted. -
I think we've exhausted vehicles over the last 10 -15 years or so, especially with the AFOL community offering mods/improvements to make TLGs products better. How many cranes, of all varieties, have we had since 2000? As for flagship sets, the Unimog was an interesting build and a great platform for MODs, and I purchased the Arocs twice to hopefully find the same, but really, how many versions of a truck, digger, crane W.H.Y., do we need. I've yet to see the BWE in the plastic, so I reserve judgement until then. So, where next? rollercoaster (Maybe with additional packs) fairground rides (lots of motion derived from one motor) a V8 internal combustion engine, with functioning inlet, and outlet valves run by proper cams, or even pneumatics) Just some thoughts to get this topic back on track.

Best way to make a fifth wheel
jus1973 replied to jus1973's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Well that was a bust. Whilst the fifth wheel held, after a little mod, due to not having all the correct parts, the flex in the studless only trailer was too much. Couldn't seem to get both sets of wheels to make good contact with the ground, and a heck of a lot of strain was placed on the axle of the first set on the trailer. This was despite a 3 beam deep chassis, running both holes pointing to the sides, and holes pointing up/down, to try to reduce the flex. The trailer ended up also being a massive 2.5Kg in an effort to stop the flex. Seems like i'm going to have to rethink what to do with my second Arocs. Ideas? -
Best way to make a fifth wheel
jus1973 replied to jus1973's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks for the replies guys. All very useful for ideas. 2LegoOrNot2Lego, your fifth wheel idea is simple, and looks quite effective. Can it stand a 4kg load being pulled by the tractor unit? I figure the Volvo Loader comes in at 2.5kg, and I've got to allow 1.5kg at least for the trailer, when I've motorised the rear ramps and legs, maybe more. -
Best way to make a fifth wheel
jus1973 replied to jus1973's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thats what I originally envisioned, but the weight on the pin is too much. The gooseneck will have the Volvo loader on it, or similar Its a really neat design though, and if i was going for total realism, then it'd be perfect. -
Hi I'm trying to make a goosenecked trailer for a modified Arocs 6x4 cab, but have run into a bit of a problem. I want to have a detachable trailer, but building a fifth wheel in a life like manner puts too much strain on such as small piece. Is there a generally known method of constructing a strong coupling, that is also detachable? I did think about using the turntable in the Arocs set to act as a load bearer, with a frame on the trailer which would rest on the turntable, attached to the truck chassis, but it makes for a very high coupling height. Any and all thoughts welcome.
