[TC10] Unimog U 400
Kristof replied to syclone's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Wow that evolution is really interesting. It clearly tels the reasons for some design decisions i.e. the new wheelhubs :D Also it's surprising that they started with medium sized model and grew into huge flagship :O -
^ I'd say this is the only (but important) positive of how small the profits are. Doesn't make much sense for the big companies to sue an individual who makes few bucks by 'stealing' their IP... Once you'd start making some decent income and become widely popular with your product, you run in trouble. So in a way we should be lucky for how bad business this is :D

That's a bad news :/ Two small perhaps then? But hey, how many times does something look impossible until this eureka moment :D Fingers crossed! -

Could you not squeeze standard size cylinder for the classic tilting? Given the size of the bed, I think it would scale appropriaately, rather than this small one. -
I'm now in process of making instructions for two of my Star Wars models (so maybe I'm off topic, but really I think that the theme doesn't make big difference in the perspective of your question) and given that: I had to learn the software (LDRaw, LPub) I had to disassemble and re-assemble the models many (many!!) times to find the acceptable and logical ('lego-like') building sequence I had to alter the design to avoid possible flaws AND some very rare elements which would discourage people from building I can honestly tell you that this is a community contribution, not a business by far. And that is even if I consider arking few dollars for the instructions (probably using Anio scheme - give $5 or more if you like). I'd have to have sold hundreds of copies to get full compensation for my time spent over this (which was mostly not very entertaining) and that is I think very hardly to happen. True, if I now make another model, it would probably be less pain to make the instructions, still enough work though. The main problem which I think makes this very insecure business is the shallow market. You basically only target hardcore AFOLs who are used to BrickLink parts and don't hesitate to spend decent money and time onto it. And although I'm just guessing, I feel that there aren't that many to make a solid customer base.

Shall I be picky, I'd say that the maximum tip angle is somewhat low. any chance you could achieve more? At least 45°? :) -
Efferman's Custom Parts
Kristof replied to efferman's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Really? Was the amount of debating actually that disgusting? I just shared my opinion about this, so did others. That's what you should expect on the forum right? :) I'm curious about what Efferman would think, I hope he will check this soon. Though by any mean I didn't mean to discourage you. I just said I didn't think it's beneficial but hey, you may know better than I do, that's actually quite likely since you have custom part experience - I do not :) So don't let yourself be put off just because there were few skeptical comments :D -

Advice from non-expert: Do propper pneumatics but do also focus on other functions! :D There is notming more attractive for me than a model with complex functionality and the embedded pneumatics which makes sense in the application. Model which is clearly focused just on PS and other functions are neglected is just... But then again, this is pneumatics contest :D That may alter the goals so who am I to say :) -

So you made another topic... ?! Well, this is more provokative than funny or cool in case you thought it could be :/ Congratulations on loosing the chance to make good impression with your creation ;)- 35 replies

Efferman's Custom Parts
Kristof replied to efferman's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Completely true :) Only I thought that @Never seeked for cheap and efficient way rather than some unique contraption :) But if it's not the case, I have nothing but thumbs up for the non-standard solution! :D I wouldn't personally attempt this, as I'd expect to much trouble having such crazy gears to mesh properly, but if anyone would, it's great. -

Maybe I don't get correctly what you are trying to achieve, but trying to make such complicated gear contraption from buckets seems crazy. It would be interesting and effective if it worked eventually, but it is neither logical nor efficient solution if you just want functional bucket wheel. As such, I would recommend copying the gear rack pieces from the new BWE set and printing these, plus maybe the buckets (or use some older lego buckets). -

@Never - I'm no expert on custom printed part pricing but I'd expect such huge part to be really pricy. I'm not sure if this is the way to cut down the cost. -

I'm so much looking forward to this! This is like the perfect scale for me. Budget and space friendly - both of which I'm lacking of :D This could very well be the first MOC I actually copy :) -
^ Exactly. Sometimes being closer to the 'correct' angle isn't win win. Gol named it - the taper is missing. And about the contrast, true, it looks less disturbing in real bricks, but it's still there for me :) Like someone came and flattened the face with a rolling pin :D What is for certain that this is all subjective - what seems wrong to me may nice for the majority :) Just sharing my feels and being very picky, because we all know that if it comes to your designs, perfect is not enough :D

[MOC] Delta Class DX-9 Stormtrooper transport
Kristof replied to michaelozzie's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Well done! Looks very realistic but still with this lovely lego essence. Really nice. -
Great. Hinge plate could do the job, or maybe something with the panels you use for the faceplate. Regarding the face, where you see a nice change, I'm observing to much of an contrast. There is nothing like that on the real thing. I like both, studded and studless, though mixing both on two adjacent faces (which feature similar texture on the real thing) looks a bit weird and makes the studs on the sides stand out to much :) All this, however, can be emphasized by renderings. It may be that when built from real, everything would blend together nicely, without this seemingly strong contrast.
-
Great updates. I like everything but two things. You don't really show it on the renders but vrom the front view it seems the top side is lacking some nice panel contour towards the tapered sides. With so much perfection on the sides and the back, top looks a bit crude now. Second thing is the 'nose' plating. It looks to clean and shiny compared to the studded sides and pretty much whole rest of the model. Looking on the props, I can see what you tried to capture. With the rest of the head as it is though, it just stands out to much in my opinion.

Are there any limits to lego cranes?? This is incredible. Huge, beautiful and functional... wow.

I see two absolutely different builds here. I mean... ABSOLUTELY! :) So do I need to get my eyes replaced or is it just your interpretation of what 'almost identical' means? Or late april fools perhaps...?

Kristof replied to Raskolnikov's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Neat! Everything looks spot on! But maybe the thrusters look a bit artificial, poking out on tat back side without any greebling around. -
It would help getting to the answer if you named more examples of what other things would you expect from technic sets. Buildings? Starships? The example of the BWE B-model you give is some kind of conveyor sorting machine (?) - do you think it would make for a succesful set on its own? While lego technic certainly offers huge scope for re-creating and inventing all sorts of mechanical contraptions, the sets (and also the majority of MOCs) reflect the reality I think. Most mechanical stuff you see around are vehicles of some sort. And as MindGarage said, these are good subjects to reproduce. I like, for example, the kinetic sculptures some people (JKBrickworks) build out of technic but I absolutely do not wonder why these are less common or why there are no sets like that :)

Umm.... I'd take these arms I guess! :D Good luck - doesn't matter how many times you screw up, you still get it on the first try eventually :D
