8039 Venator... worst set ever.. needs help.
Kristof replied to broomhandle's topic in LEGO Star Wars
Hmm I don't know... As much as I'm perfectionist when it comes to design (and especially when the Venator is regarded) I kind of feel with Lego designers on this. They had to implement some interior in it and given the complex shape this destroyer has, such task is impossible without big sacrifices on accuracy. Venator is far, far more challening than classic ISD. I'm not saying this set is particularly good. In fact I agree that it looks quite awful and absolutely not true to the original. I also think, though, that there isn't much better way of designing this WITH some interior for minifigs. Not in this scale and certainly not with the lego set design restrictions. I believe that I know nearly every Venator MOC ever built and shared on the internet. Excluding the micro scaled versions, these are all non-playable, moreless fragile standalone display sets. From those, the smallest and most affordable design that I'd call accurate enough is the Primus' design, which is about 3k ish pieces and is already quite big. (I don't consider my own design - I believe I may be somewhat biased on judging that one :D ). From there you can only go bigger - Thire5 design (improved by Anio) is 5k bricks beast already and you need a dedicated dining table to display that one... What I'm trying to say that spitting on this 8039 lego set is easy but to the date noone has developed a competing design that would be so much better. I'm sure that there could be minor adjustments applied - some more details, greebling on sides, perhaps even slight structure improvements, thats e.g. what sahidko did. But on the whole, unless loosing the interior features or the (limited) swooshability, any significatnt improvement seems rather impossible to perform. -
[UCS] [WIP] [MOC] Venator Class Star Destroyer
Kristof replied to Ellisss_2's topic in LEGO Star Wars
The issue with uneven overhang is caused by some slight error in geometry of your construction. There can be two reasons for this in general - either the vertical slope of the hull or the horizontal slope of the 'greebling' sides is insufficient. From the sideview, it looks that your horizontal slope is quite alright, perhaps only a touch to small. So I guess you didnt taper the sides enough. Given that your geometry otherwise works (meanimg that there arent any skewed parts, everything fits neatly) and you want to avoid changing it, the easiest solution to this I see is jtust to progressively add up the layers of plates underneath the greebling as you approach the back of the ship, so that compensates for the enlarging overhang of the hull plate. Also, by the way, if you ever aim to building this irl, you might want to substitute for these outdated hinge plates you currently use for mounting the side panels fo the center part of the hull. You still can get these used from BrickLink but i think it's way easier to simply use some newer substitutes. -
[UCS] [WIP] [MOC] Venator Class Star Destroyer

Hello again, well, since it is nearly exactly the same scale as the Primus' venator design, it actually indeed IS in perfect scale with UCS ISD... :) -
[MOC] Aston Martin DB11

I like it very much! -
Indeed, it is. And out of date to be honest. I should really update it asap :)

Hello, I'm not secure whether this is the right place to put the suggestions, but hopefully not particularly wrong :) I noticed several members to have huge pictures in signatures lately. And often these pictures aren't even lego related. Let's name 9V system for example. I know I can easily hide their sigs but still I think there should be a limitation anyway. These signatures take up nearly whole screen! Could you consider setting some restrictions for signature contents and size? Thanks!

Congratz! Big and great models won, I favorized smaller or more original stuff in this contest but that's only my opinion. Anyway, I think this it the best contest so far if it comes to the count of really great and quality entries. I really like most of them. Great job everyone!
-
Yea, that's right. Perhaps if the contestants were asked to make the thumbnails (could mostly be just the main pic resized). Links would do though. And reducing the number of pics is good idea. I'd suggest everyone to provide link to the external galery if they had more pictures one could browse :)

17: 10 6: 6 21: 4 9: 3 3: 2 25: 1 Hard choice except the first place. If it wasn't so original, Ikarus would be definite no.1 for me :) Good luck everyone!

Hello Jim, I have one suggestion about Voting topics in these contest in general. It would be much more convenient if the numbered list of the entries had small thumbnail picture of each given model so it's not necessary to check the rather lengthy entry topic every time I want to inspect the model. Or perhaps it would be equally helpful to hyperlink the items from the list to the regarding post in the entry topic. I think both these improvemetns might even help getting more people to vote.

It looks magnificent! Of course, some lighting effects would make it even better but still very nice. I can imagine it's a nightmatre to handle this in one LDD file. This screams for separate renderingand then photoshoping the scene.

[TC10] Wheel Loader
Kristof replied to jorgeopesi's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thumb's down for transparent tubes. I never like how these look on models - very unrealistic. I think you just need to solve how to clip these three rigid hoses without using a tape, which I agree looks bad. I also think that thin cylinders would look weird. Try to stick with big ones! By any chance can you not turn the top cylinder upside down so the hose pegs point 'inside'? Then you could perhaps route the hoses inside without bothering about making them nice nd straight. In the end, I'd prefer longer tubes which aren't super neatly tied, rather than any adhesive or rubber bands or whatever :)- 86 replies

Hello, sorry if this has been discussed before, I don't have time to read through all replies. The feature I'm missing a lot is the page number buttons on topic lists. I usually want to go directly to the last page, especially if it's a thread I follow and check on regular basis. Now I need to cluck twice, which may seem like a marginal problem, but it's far less convenient. Similarly with the 'content I posted in' button, which is now slightly less accessible than before. Otherwise I congratz on the upgrade, the older look, however beloved, started to look quite obsolete and I understand you had no choice but upgrading anyway :) While I'm not yet using any new beneficial functions, I'm sure there are and it's juts the matter of some short time period to get used to it.

[TC10] F18 Carrier
Kristof replied to Alex Ilea's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Given that how interesting guts this have and how original and advanced the functions seem to be, I think you should try to tweak up the outer shell design a little bit so it resembles the actuall carrier better. Now, the visual appearence from outside is definitely a drawback to this otherwise very cool creation! -
[WIP] Massive Dump Truck

I'd say +1 for a lot of confidence - LegoLego sets high goals and keep working eventhough it's difficult. But I'd also say -1 for to much confidence - Sometimes people suggested something that is obviously correct, or poited out a flaw (which is indisputably a flaw) and he either ignores or ensures that his execution is perfectly fine. Like the unsuspended U joints - it already has been pointed out like four times. Still the progress is respectable :) -
Ahh, now I know exactly what you mean! And conveniently, I know a PERFECT way to implement this! I can't simply show you or even tell you comprehensibly, but I can give you great confusing and chaotic sort-of-description, so here you go: You need to make this kind of linkage, it uses some gears and certain other parts, including friction pins. It works similarly to the... ouch, I can't tell you this... Well, anyway, you then connect this between your drive train and the actuator and it's done! Understood? Little bit obscure and hard to follow but with a little bit of fiddling around, you should be good!

Derived from your complicated description, I guess that you are seeking for a solution for mechanical speedometer/tachometer, is that correct? Real mechanical speedometers in cars use magnetic induction principle, thats something you hardly make with lego. The only other mechanicals solution I know all use centrifugal force, just like the contraption suggested by @Racksko. Nico71 has built one: http://www.nico71.fr/centrifugal-tachometer/ I don't know about using differentials. In theory, you should have this torque/speed proportion on the output shafts but I don't know how well that actually works with lego pieces. The principle doesn't seem very beneficial, since such technology is not used for real tachometers (or is it?).

[TC10] Scraper Caterpillar
Kristof replied to juGSI16V's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Haha, that would be interesing to know. As a hobbyist woodworker, I instantly see the handplane in it :) the idea beneath is the very same. Perhaps some heavy equipment engineer held a handplane one day and went like - hey, why wouldn't we use these to plain the ground :D -
[TC10] AT-AT
Kristof replied to Jeroen Ottens's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
^ He may solve the pressure but not the stability issues :/ Trying to make this work peoperly can end up in frustrating battle against laws of physics. I mean, are there any really functional walking AT-AT models out there? Besides the lego set one, which wobbly performance wasn't really great, still being incredible that it even balances. Jeroen's model may look complete but from his post I understand that he already tried a lot and the walking functionality is still crippled. I don't think he should abandon the project completely - if he sees any chance to the eventual success. But making the six legged, much more stability friendly walker seems like a logical option. Still huge challenge but with better odds to success. -

AT-TE for 100%. This would be incredible, but it's scary close to impossible I think :) -
[TC-10] Useless Box

You might try to extend the lever on the switch - if you make it about 3L, thin cylinder would have easier job on shifting it :) -
Phaleon was right - last reply to this thread was actually 2 years and 2 days old. On most circumstances, adding new reply to such thread is considered unwanted. But you might have not known that, I don't blame you (not only because it's my thread :D ) But you better watch out doing this to often or the moderators will intervene ;) I hope I can ensure in some reasonable time that you will have the oportinity to build the Venator ;)

Well, since this has been effectively bumped... :D This was my very first photo editing attempt, like ever - not that I'd have done that many since. It has some obvious flaws, I would hesitate to call it beautiful myself but it was the best I could have 'gimped' out these days haha :D This Home One thing is weird, you are right about the wookieped stats, I however, always thought it was bigger, about 3800m - some sources list this value and many of these 'ship comparison' pictures show Home One really big, more than twice the ISD. But who know what's correct :D Probably 1300 m in the end :) Anyway, for anyone who'd wonder (and for several trusty followers I have), both models from this pic are now built and I'm still working on the instructions. It goes, however, painfully slowly - I was hoping that holiday would make the justice but it turned out I had even less time for PC work than I have throughtout the terms when I am at the university. Bad thing is that I need access both to my pc and to my lego, which makes me unable to work on travels etc :( I have some progress done anyway but It's still nowhere near finished, especially the Venator which is quite complicated build.

Since it's pneumatic contest, I think that the air tank is considerable option :) I have never got my hands on it though - does is in fact do anything? Could you possibly make a video of the functions WITH and WITHOUT the air tank?- 86 replies
