  1. That's very nice document! Good points, interesting notes and some good advices. I wouldn't realize till this very moment how special it actually is to build this model without excessive paiting or mods! Anyway, this makes me bring up my usual comment - isn't it time for new (or at least updated) design? :) Some with parts&techniques available today? Being designed a decade ago, Cavegods masterpiece is getting aged and this hunting for rare species is taking over the build itself. Like 90% of the 'fun' is part aquisition and the rest goes to the actual build. To be clear, I have nothing but admiration for those who manage to finish such project, just thinking whether the effort couldn't be better put into more fundamental design updates from which others could benefit rather than from conclusion that building a model will remain possible for only few further individuals :D That is though question for everyone :) Good luck with finishing your endeavor! And if you keep posting this journal, I'm happy - reading this brings me as close to ayctually building it as I can (probably) ever get :D
  2. That's very different model he has (Anio-style). Much larger and with way more complex internal structure - you have nowhere to connect these mounting hinges. Also there isn't much room inside Primus based Venator to use bionicle ball joint locking assemblies. Unless you figure out some very clever anchoring (which is usually oucome of long trial'n'error playing with some hinges and plates and even then it often only works thanks to the tollerances in parts and some bending) I'd suggest using rubber bands+clips or technic 2L rubber dumpers.
  3. ^ I'm sure you had. An'd it's incredible tbh. Perhaps even for the sake of the very fact that it can move on it's own (no matter how slowly and painfully) it makes some sense to implement RC driving. I'd just probably chose to save my motors (if I had any in the first place :D :D ) for some models where these will actually be reasonably used :)
  4. Amazing feat to build such monster! Great functions implemented. I just can't understand (and I bring up this question quite a lot) - is is even worth motorizing the drivetrain for such giant truck? Is it... fun to drive around given that low speed... plus parts are getting stressed a lot? This is more like general approach question, not just focused on your model :)
  5. Pneumatics Any chance for parts like compressor pressure switch (or perhaps even pressure regulator) to be released? Also why air tanks are no longer used? Without these elements, isn't whole pneumatic system dull and hard to control? Power functions Newer official lego PF elements seem to be years behind? (Poor range and performance IR remote, super basic controls) It earlier, LEGO used to be leading player in this branch - in the era of old 9V system with all the motors, lights, conductive bricks, sensors and accessories, LEGO was offering the highest possible level. Is it so hard to implement newer technical features today? Shafting The only element of shafting in lego technic is an axle - with all its pros and cons (bending, low torsion stiffness...). With models growing bigger and bigger, is there any plan to introduce some more substantial system for shafts?
  6. Wow, nice job. I admire your reverse engineering skills!
  7. Hello, I'll try to complete the LDraw model as fast as possible so I can hand over the parts list to you! The main issue is that in order to make the instructions, you need to respect the building order while making the digital model. Otherwise it makes nearly impossible to get some logic sequences of building steps for the instructions. I'm also trying to use the benefits of section assemblies which can then be put together. All this is required for having comprehensive instructions as a result. Unfortunately it also slows down the process. If nothing bad happens, I should have both models completed by the end of April. Then it shall take no longer than another month to complete the manual. Cherrs :)
  8. I guess this is a hitch rather than a goal :D
  9. Is he done already? Link gives me an error :)
  10. I checked your design in detail and I suggest you to stick with Primus' instructions, at least for the main frame. Sent you an email with more throughout explanation :)
  11. You should have something like access request from me on email :)
  12. ^The link you shared doesn't approve others to view the file. Two things - if the basic frame is taken from Primus' design, then don't worry about any misalignments - everything on his frame connects perfectly. If you made some structural changes, then nothing is granted and forcing LDD to make the connection won't actually prove you anything - there are very big tolerances on some bricks so sometimes even if it seems connected in LDD, it's misaligned. And vice versa of course. If you want to try and connect them anyway, I suggest you to add some support bricks 'around' where these should go, so there is more than one stud connection on at least one side oif that hinge. Then the procedure is either to use snap tool (insecure) or to bend the hinge more, attach on one side and then using rotating tool you try to hit the point where the other end meets the other part of the frame (also insecure).
13. On flickr, browse the photo you want to share. Hoever the mouse in the bottom right corner. Several white outline buttons pop up. Click on the one which look like bent arrow pointing right. You get a pop up window with sharing options. Select BBCode from the list of tabs. Select the size and then just copy and paste the selected code in the post here.
  14. It seems like the middle hull part is not wedged towards the front - is it just the LDD? Otherwise it looks good and I appreciate you giving credit to both guys! Few observations though - you use only very few Technic, Pin 1/2s to mount the greebles, whereas some of these are quite a chunks. Much better to use brackets (either 2x2, 1x4, 1x2...) since these are available nowdays. Secondly, you mount the big thrusters via axle just into one brick with axle hole - that's not very firm. I'd suggest adding few bricks inline (securew with plates or something) and extending the axle through multiple of them. FInally I'm not sure about these full red bridges. I personally don't like red paint on these in any volume but with some grey bits, it looks reasonably well (like qui gon did). This looks too reddish to me. Primus' design is brilliant, no doubt. But since you are designing it over anyway, it would be beneficial to reflect that it's quite dated. Back then, Hans didn't have the options we have today with all the new parts and available techniques. Considering these could significantly improve the build.
  15. Oh yea, The 'final' slope before entrance to the top station looks spot on. I was more like talking about whole travel and the impression from it. But in fact, great impression is already granted given how special this model is :)
  16. ^ I mean it. I know how difficult is to shape out this ship. Working on mine for... huh almost a year now :D
  17. Perfect :)
  18. Nicely done! My only objection would go towards that LBG trunk section right beneath the cockpit - that one seems far to rectangular. If you used 1x3x1 curved slopes instead of 1x2x2/3 on the sides, iz could help a little. Still there is that nasty pointy step on the transition between this and the narrower part of the trunk. I'd suggest using some snot technique to create some more roundish outline for that part.
  19. What I like on all your dioramas Markus is the original composition. You always manage to come up with different layout, something that hasn't been used before. The only aspect I would change on this moc is the very top of the 'hangar' section. It really looks like some highway being this flat and uniform. I'd prefer some more textured surface od perhaps even wavy profile to picture the snow surface above the base...?
  20. That's massive... wow. I'm wondering - wouldn't it be better to use some non lego structire to augment the mountain a little higher? This, eventhough it's breathtaking, look a bit subtle since the actual elevation of the ropeway is so small. Maybe it's a 'lack of space' issue?
  21. And here we are in the area of pure guessing. Exactly where such discussions always go :) My only logic to support my opinion is that if the initial investment was this high but further production cost effective, it would be weird business decision only to make small batch of parts. On contrary, if the production is what boosts up the cost, it seems fairly reasonable to stop producing (and using) certain part.
  22. ^ Astromech being to big or interceptor being to small - these are no the issues. Actually, both items are very well scaled. The problem is that this method of housing the astromech is just weird and hasn't been fully thought through by movie designers. Actually from what I read, it seems they even omitted the astromech' body in some scenes, at least it apears so from screenshots showing the underside where there is no bulky box housing on the Anakins interceptor. Some other images show a little bit of droid body on Obi-Wans but still smaller than it would have to be to accomodate whole droid. Such tricks must be nightmare for lego designers. And not just lego. So far I havent found a model that would have a satisfactory construction for this. I don't think there is any perfect solution here and shifting the structure upwards or downwards only shifts the problem, not that it would solve it.
  23. ^ Does $200,000 sound reasonable for a piece of (no matter how precisely) machined metal? I find it hard to believe... the figure feels several digits longer than I'd expect it to be.
  24. ^ That seems correct! Yeah I meant the latest rendition, though I didn't realize how subtle it it. Perhaps the older one would fit better, yet both are far from desirable accuracy in both dimensions and detail :) I'd believe that after a bit of search, we would discover some nice MOC in matching scale. ISD has been recreated to many times for this not to happen :D That's also why it is not on my short term to-do list. However, I admitt I'm tempted to try it one day ;)
