  1. I have wondered about that myself. When the company wants to do something AFOLs don't like they spout this 5% figure. Yet they maintain a small section of employees to communicate with us and sets aimed at the AFOL market sometimes sell out in days (or even hours). I think they simply have no idea and would rather not spoil the mythology around the company.
  2. I need to fill a car ferry for a display that is upcoming so I thought I would put together some cars and trucks that I have been meaning to try for a while. Anyway, after a week of building I ended up with six new vehicles. Five MOCs and one using instructions from a couple of years ago (black SUV) that I never bought but had the parts to assemble. I was surprised I had the dark green parts to make two trucks and I was especially pleased with my "Rover" with the canoe on top. Sorry for the crappy iPad pics.
  3. How about this: keep buying what you want, build it, take out the minifigs and then when you are done with the brick dump it in tubs and donate them to local schools, day care centers, homeless shelters, wherever. Just a suggestion to enjoy what you are doing and give something to your community.
  4. Not that I want to continue down this tangent but... I don't think you understand what the term "evergreen" means in the LEGO context. CASTLE, SPACE, CITY (by whatever name) these are "evergreen" because they are permanent parts of the LEGO line of sets. Super Heroes are licensed which means that they could be lost at any time (subject to contractual obligations). LEGO had Spider-man, lost it for a few years and now has it back. It could be lost again when the current contract expires. Licensed themes, even STAR WARS, are by definition "temporary". They cannot be permanent because LEGO does not own the intellectual property no matter how successful and long-running.
  5. That is often the dividing line for "Classic Castle": brick-built horses which was accompianied by new artwork (especially heraldry) and the introduction of the castle wall pieces in 1984. That said the "Classic Castle City standard" which I have worked with for many years is based on those wall elements so I tend to see Classic Castle as something perhaps different than a particular subtheme. I think the term "classic castle" is a simply a way to label the theme for reference. So to answer the original question: yes, there is a "classic" castle period which probably coincides with whenever you got your first castle set. ;) edit for spelling: "first" not "fist"
  6. Great news! Well done to revive your project. After BrickWiki went offline for a two years I was so excited to have it back even if we had to move to a new URL. I can now explore your site and add an article! Best wishes for success!
  7. If you are going to cut and paint why not just buy one? As for a "purist" solution: I would suggest a tan 1x3 tile with a 2x2 tan plate attached and for a handle ... arggh... I have no idea what to call the part I am thinking of but it has a stud on the end and I usually use them for a wrench.
  8. WOW! These are some great looking accessories.

  10. This is a good conversation to have every year or two I think. Not true in my case. I find the Brickarms Forums to be moderated about as much as EB. It also depends a bit on the moderators. I have seen widely varying levels of moderation between the different fora when different moderators are involved. OMG no! Having been here for several years now I can tell you that scrolling through 30+ pages of talk about a theme from years ago is rather useless. Sure you can use the "View New Content" button to stay current but what happens when you are new? How do you find information from 2012 or 2008? Amen to that. As someone who has made extra work for these people in the past I appreciate all the time and effort they put in even if I do not always agree with them.
  11. Funny thing is I always though the DUPLO versions were perfectly scaled for minifigs...
  12. ^ Very nice upgrades! The HM is resplendent (as he should be) in all that braid. The sergeant/officer is also really fantastic with the design really "popping". The soldier ... I'm not sure he needs the colour at the throat and sash but the orange seems to work better than the green for sure. I don't object to the leg printing BTW but your second version makes the HM even more special. Also the second design works better visually with the cutaway giving it more shape.
  13. These are really nice and the HM especially has a really nice "steampunk" quality but in way your torso designs are too detailed. The LEGO aesthetic is far more broad, more "cartoon" than "model soldiers". For example the cross belts and sashes are simply too small. I love the details but they just don't say "LEGO" to me, sorry.
  14. I live in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada where we removed the roundabouts around fifty years ago in a fit of "modernizing". Since these things come full circle (see what I did there) they started adding them back into local road design about 10 years ago. They just added one at the entrance to the university where I work. As others have mentioned, the lack of experience of an entire generation of drivers who grew up and learned to drive without these things makes for a lot of timid and confused drivers which made them a pain to navigate for the first few years. Now with practice most drivers are getting used to them and it is better.
  15. Sorry to keep going off-topic but I use an App called FlickStakr on my iPad Mini and it works great for me.
  16. Quite nice. The pizza shop is very nicely done. In the bike shop is there a reason the "jackets" for sale have hands in them?
  17. These are delightful and the backdrops are really nice as well. I think my favorite is James.
  18. I updated my suggestion to include names.
  19. Interesting how in your example you make my case. You write "Macintosh Computers" not "Macintoshes" and in fact very few would know what you were talking about if you did (at least those of us who enjoy apples or wear certain kinds of boots). The monosyllabic abbreviation "Macs" is certainly used by we are not talking about "LEGs".
  20. Find somebody like me who trades my fleshies for your yellows in your local LUG or at an event.
  21. Ah, of course! It looks fantastic. I wonder if I could get one "chromed". There used to be a guy doing that on BL or something...
  22. Interesting point. I am a male and feminist and I make that joke all the time especially at shows. It has nothing to do with gender however and my intention is simply to make light of how much I spend and that my spouse is not an AFOL. I have also made a similar joke about spending my kids college fund. Does that make me a hater of children or education? If I was gay I would say "my husband". I am not sure we need to go to the extreme of neutering language. A better approach would be to be more inclusive and feature a variety of builders which I would hope the magazine will do.
  23. Is there another Oklahoma? Sorry, just amused me. Carry on.
  24. Wow, CastleDefender, your signifers must be body building champions. Yours are nice. I don't recognize the element you used for your eagle. I think I win in the "least ornate" department : Gotta get myself a Brick Warriors cornu.
