Lego 10182 Cafe Corner--New Build Review!
Off the wall replied to VintageLegoEra's topic in LEGO Town
Nice job. Thanks. I bought one of these used. When I get the new one, I'm going to try and utilize the 8 x 8 empty area on the corner. Maybe change the stairs. Replace with a TH type elevator? Something to square up the back corner of the building. -
Lego 10182 Cafe Corner--New Build Review!

Right you are. Imagine buying a 1930s catalin Art Deco radio in perfect condition. Several thousand dollars. You look at it one day and it's developed a hairline crack. No one touched it. Just part of the 'fun' of collecting plastic. All sorts of stuff can happen over time. Some of it can be mitigated, some of it is just plastic being plastic and you have to live with it. -
Lego 10182 Cafe Corner--New Build Review!

Thanks for the review. I plan on splurging within the next 60 days and buying one of these NIB. So, your review is very helpful. I've only been into Lego for about two years. However, I've collected Art Deco and machine age design objects that go back to the 30s and 40s. Many of them are plastic. And, collecting plastic has its hazards. The colors (especially catalin and to some degree plaskon) change through the years. UV, flame retardant chemicals, seems like there are several reasons for color changes. The older plastic from the thirties can be very thick and I've seen it crack just sitting on a shelf. I guess my experience over the past thirty years in collecting plastic items makes me a little less sensitive to coloration changes and differences. Of course if I bought a new set and there were color variations, I think I might bring it to TLGs attention. When I buy a CC that's been stored under unknown conditions for seven years, I'll probably be a little more understanding than I would be otherwise. Sort of caveat emptor on a set that old. Hopefully, it hasn't been shaken, dropped or stored in temperature extremes. Again, thanks for the review. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Off the wall replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I see the GE is available again at Lego.com with an availability date on July 25th. -
Of course to each his own. I'm not being judgmental. I was just curious if anyone was like me and didn't value/was interested in the interiors all that much. Question wasn't about right or wrong or which is better.
-
Can't wait to see it. Your MOCs are some of the best in the hobby.
-
Maybe it's just me, or at best I'm in the minority, but I couldn't care less about the interior of my buildings. Nothing against all of you who seem to really focus on the interior, but the CC has all the interior that I need. I'm building enlarged versions of modulars and most of the interior parts wind up in a five gallon storage bin. Anyone else feel the same way?
-
That pretty much says it all......
-
Thanks. I just haven't taken the time to set up a place where I can store pictures. Maybe one day. Maybe one day. Again, thanks. Always glad to show them via email.

I keep one table with 'by the book' modulars. Another table has my 16,000 (estimate) piece grand emporium, a legitimate three story PR MOC and a couple of other MOCs. Display space isn't an issue. In my case, I can't see rebricking the modulars. Friends like the display, space isn't an issue and I can do MOCs without rebricking.

The 'stock' town hall in all of these photos looks so square and out of proportion, especially next to the PR. I've ordered another TH and will probably stop by the Lego store tomorrow to get an additional one. I need to make it about 16 wider on each side. Maybe I can put three together to get what I want. I suppose my complaint, if I had to be specific, about the town hall is based on proportion. I've exchanged emails with a couple of AFOLs who, like me, are buying multiples of the same modular not for investment purposes, but to get a little more size contrast amongst the buildings in our 'cities'.

Welcome. Barcelona, what a beautiful city. With a great football team. Had the opportunity of visiting last year. Nice people, lots to do.
-
Welcome! And, after tomorrow, you'll have more time for Lego after your team is eliminated from the World Cup. Of course, I've had that extra time since Belgium beat the USA last week! Seriously, welcome!

I would suggest you also look at some of the creations of contributor 'eurotrash'. Such as his spectacular abandoned factory. Every town needs its seedy side. Or, as realtors call it, an 'up and coming' neighborhood.
-
And, we have to cut TLG some slack on the CC and MS interiors. CC was the first and MS was AFOL designed. TLG hit their stride with GG.

I'm not getting drawn back into the PR debate, but Town Hall is far from a 'big empty shell'. I've built it three times (as I have most of the modulars) and would place it in the middle of the pack as far as modulars go. Just because a modular doesn't have hundreds of small non structural components doesn't make it an empty shell. I'm looking forward to buying three more town halls and creating a larger building.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Off the wall replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Nice work, finnbricked. If 60031 City Corner had a less boring first floor (too much glass....needs more bricks) and something (flowers, architectural detail, whatever) under the second and third floor center window, then you'd really have a winner. Love the roof and the overall choice of colors. But, like I said, good on all of your designs. -

Not being a collector of City stuff, I'm probably wrong. The only MOCs that I've really thought fit in are the ones on Lego ideas. Like the Barnes-Noble/Starbucks, the candy shop and a few others from a guy in Canada (a hospital and an apartment building) that can be seen on ebay. Now that I have thousands and thousands or pieces left over from my eight (or was it nine?) GE MOC, maybe I'll get into an MOC or two. -

I don't know anyone who collects modulars (but I'm sure someone will prove me wrong) who wouldn't welcome some 16 wide modulars. And, the Bike Shop obviously isn't an attempt by TLG to add to the modular product line. It's not as detailed as a modular and just doesn't look like a modular. Looks like it fits in more with City. And, I don't want a cheap modular, but a few less expensive ones would be a nice addition. I'm also fairly certain that half a modular (16 wide) would cost more than half the price of a full 32 wide modular. If we are only going to get one 32 wide modular a year, a 16 wide in between regular modulars would be nice. Of course, we always have the MOC route to get a smaller modular. -

Totally agree as far as it fitting into the modular theme. However, if they do a 16 x 32 that's in the spirit of modular design, I could live with it. Like 1/2 of the pet shop. -

Fine, as long as they maintain the look of a modular. The great detail, texture, etc. Not flat and bright like the Bike Shop/Cafe. Flat and bright is fine, but not it the modular series. -

mi·sog·y·ny məˈsäjənē/ noun dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women. Well, in all fairness, I've never seen a lot that on eurobricks. Certainly not flooded with it. I have seen people like me who, once gender bias is brought into the discussion, can't resist 'pulling a few chains' just for the sport of it. I've worked with enough women attorneys over the years to become gender neutral, so to speak. We also have to appreciate cultural differences since this is a world wide forum. People in liberal American states probably have a different opinion of a woman's place in society than people in other cultures in other parts of the world. -
What Lego-related thing did you do today?

Trying to sort out the pieces left over from combining eight grand emporiums into one large one. What a mess.
