Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Off the wall replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
We seem to go back and forth on exactly who these sets are marketed for, depending on the spin we need. A post office would be fine. Just not another PR. Hospital? Fine. Museum. Great. How about a nice brownstone? -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

Now that would be a modular building! Wow. Thanks for posting the pics. Of course, it would dwarf the modular light series represented by the forgettable PR. -
The exterior of the building needs more, for lack of a better term, 'texture'. Maybe recess the windows, put some detail around the windows, perhaps the top row of bricks on each floor could contrast, either in color or style, the other exterior bricks. The first floor windows need at least one row of bricks between them and the ground. I think the trim would be better in an earth tone, brown maybe, to go with the primary color of the brick. The interior is nicely detailed but the floors need to be connected with stairs or an elevator. Nice move on going with a 32 wide plate.

What Lego-related thing did you do today?
Off the wall replied to Savage Oppress's topic in Community
Made good progress on my 96 x 64 grand emporium. Got the first four floors on one side completed (32 x 96). Working on the roof/skylights. Thinking about what to put in the interior ( as far as store merchandise goes) and what to put in the display windows. Still need to demo some interior wall sections from original build and finalize floor plan. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Off the wall replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
Post offices are becoming more and more specific to the country in which they are located. I don't think I've been inside an American post office in over a year. Our deliveries are usually UPS or FedEx. We ship FedEx ground or UPS. Stamps, when we rarely need them, are bought at the grocery store. So, at least where I live, the post office is largely irrelevant. Many have closed or combined operations. If you want a blast from the past, there used to be a lot of large American post offices with, at times, great architecture. I don't have a preference as to what comes next, as long as it's not another PR type building. A car repair shop/dealer would be great. -

Good news. I'm building a four story 96 x 64 GE and need a few more. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion

DMV would be very realistic. Minifigs sitting in display, collecting dust and not moving for months at a time. Pretty much describes the DMV. Problem with a post office is that it's about as timely as a blacksmiths shop. -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
Off the wall replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
When I research the history of Lego and modular buildings, it usually says this product line was meant for AFOLs, so I don't understand the concern with 'playability'. Also, most 16 wide modular MOCs look like shoe boxes. Thankfully, the PS was a classic using 16 wide buildings. If lego can pull off another set of 16 wide buildings that have some texture and architectural detail, I'm fine with it. Maybe a homeless shelter, a state unemployment office or a massage parlor. -
Well, mostly building the architectural sets and modular buildings, afraid I can't. Unless you count the pet shop modular that's two buildings that can be built independently of one another. Or, on some modulars different people could be working on one of three floors. Anyway, since probably 99% of those reading this thread know more about the lego product line than I know, maybe they can help.

Good review, good price and nice representation of the subject matter by the designer. Thanks for the review.

I'm mostly into Lego for the architecture sets and modular buildings. Once in a while I stumble across a set outside of those categories that I really like. Finished building the fairground mixer. Very impressive. Nothing negative to say about it. Some nice building techniques, a number of components that can be built independently of one another (family project?) and a size able footprint when completed. The Brickshow review on Youtube says it all. Worth watching.

Off the wall replied to Herky's topic in Special LEGO Themes
The architecture studio has been back in the local lego store for some time now. They seem to push it every time I'm in the place. FLW Oak Park would be great. Of course, anything in the arch series that would take longer than two hours to build would be great. With one exception that I won't mention but that did get a lot of votes when the Lego arch website did a survey. Hint.....but I am a big fan of FC Barcelona.- 180 replies

Discourage somebody from taking up LEGO as a hobby?

Living in Australia and getting paid to build Lego. Doesn't sound like a bad deal! :-) Thanks for the update. -

Yes, Herky, the apparent lack of attention to the arch series is disappointing. I can dream of a 3000 or 4000 piece Frank Lloyd Wright building. But, I guess I'm in the minority and the market is just too small for another Robie House type of set. Sigh!- 180 replies

I keep the boxes. However, if space ever becomes an issue, I may fold them down flat for storage purposes. I already have five GEs, three built and two unopened. I plan on buying a few more as my GE keeps expanding. So, I may get rid of some of those boxes.

MOC Sharing Dilemma
Off the wall replied to Cumulonimbus's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@Erik Leppen, I couldn't agree less. To provide any additional explanation would involve politics. But, my ancestors sailed across an ocean to the new world over 300 years ago to enjoy individual freedom and property rights. -

Yep, 16 more days. Nothing new yesterday in the arch section at the lego store. June has the makings of a good month. Nobody on duty at the lego store was very talkative as far as future release are concerned. Basically got a 'no comment' when asking about the mini Cooper. Of course, what's a visit to the lego store with out me asking a question like 'when is the Grand Canyon set going to be released?' :-)- 180 replies

MOC Sharing Dilemma
Off the wall replied to Cumulonimbus's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I have some modular building MOCs. One is about the size of town hall and was built with two PRs and one GE. I don't post pictures because I'm lazy and just don't have the motivation to do so. I couldn't care less if someone would copy them (I have shared them with a few people). I wouldn't even care if I was so talented (which I'm probably not) that someone wanted to hijack my design. To me, it would be a compliment. It would be just a bit presumptuous on my part to worry about sharing my designs. I know modular MOCs aren't necessarily the topic but, anyway, the vast majority of modular MOCs that I see look like nothing more than shoeboxes set on their ends and then placed on 16 x 32 plates. Maybe my problem is that I just can't take Lego all that seriously. It makes me smile, and smiling is about as serious as I want to get. -
Was at the lego store today with no intention of buying this set. But, once I saw it on display, I changed my mind. I agree with one of the lego employees who said none of the photos that she had seen on the Internet really did the product justice. I go to the lego store a few times a month and thought I'd either buy an x wing or a duplicate of a modular. Nope, bought the fairground mixer. This also appears to be something where a family could work on it as a group project as there are so many individual components that can be assembled completely independent of one another. Nice work by lego.

Generally speaking, any comment other than 'awesome' is not appropriate. Learn to go along. :-)

The fact that I say 'I don't like a set' and the fact that I say 'its a good set' are not mutually exclusive. I can understand how people would like 10244. I don't. But, that doesn't keep me from recognizing it as a fine design effort and a good product that would appeal to the majority of potential buyers. Just not me. Just because I don't like it doesn't mean I think its bad. It just doesn't suit my tastes and /or fit into my collecting interests. Unlike the PR which, to me, sucks on all levels. I recently bought the super star destroyer. I don't particularly care for how it looks, but I can appreciate the fact that the designer was bang on in his attempt to make an impressive set. Even though the finished product bears a close resemblance to one of carp swimming in the lake behind my house. So, just because I don't like it doesn't mean I should characterize it as 'bad' or say it 'sucks' (statement not to be taken as an absolute as I clearly have used the word 'suck' when giving an opinion). As a matter of fact, it could mean just the opposite to most people, especially given my standards. :-) Btw, when someone uses the term 'awesome' to describe a set, it basically means nothing to me as the word 'awesome' has become so overused that it means little if anything. Awesome comment, eh?
