  1. I'm with you doc. I can make a lot more money (and have) on my computer with stocks. Lego is a hobby. I don't like my investments stacked in my house taking up space when, like I said, I can make a lot more elsewhere. But, for some unknown reason, I did buy a superstar destroyer. Maybe I can trade it for a modular in a few years as after I lugged that thing through the mall, I decided I didn't want to build it. It looks like one of the carp in the lake behind my house.
  2. I bought the Mansard Row House instructions from Brick City Depot. They are essentially a MOD of HH. They are quite helpful in allowing one to get a feel for MOD/MOC construction. I used the instructions to build the green version and a blue version. I'd never visited their website before since my only dealings with them were through eBay. After looking over their products, I really like some of the vehicles/trucks that are on display. May have to order some of them.
  3. I was reading about the history of the Gateway Arch. Seems like it has great potential for the architecture series. Might be a bit repetitive as far as the build goes, but if Lego went big on it, the result would be quite impressive. Maybe our first 4000 piece architecture series set? I know several of y'all live in Missouri and some of you have brought this up before. The design, construction and history of the gateway arch is very interesting.
  4. Wow. What a great accomplishment! I wish I could buy these at my local lego store!
  5. I don't see much consistency as to scale within the architectural line. Some of the smaller sets (Empire State, Willis tower) look like they are better suited as souvenirs than as something a true AFOL would want. But look at the empire state, for example. No matter what you do, no matter what the size, it's going to be a pretty repetitive build. The cream of the crop are the Frank Lloyd Wright buildings. Good detail, good piece count. The imperial hotel is very nice. I almost said 'I don't see ANY consistency as to scale'......but we all know where that would lead. :-) Anyway, put the Empire State Building next to the Willis tower next to any other one of the arch series and you'll see, scale wise, there isn't much relevance between them. But, I don't think lego intended there to be. They stand on their own as individual works.
  6. Superfunk and LegoSjaak..... Outstanding. Great detail. Even with a higher price, I wish TLG would have made their PR like your creations. Again, outstanding. Thanks for sharing.
  7. That's good to hear. While I'm only two miles from a lego store, I still make most purchases online. All of the stores in the ATL area seem to be staffed by good folks.
  8. I've been warned by a moderator want to be to stop making flippant posts. I apologize that I did not recognize the seriousness of this discussion. Out
  9. Gee, just when you think it couldn't get any more amusing....IT DOES. But, seriously, it is good, free entertainment. What a hoot! Hey, rollermonkey, he says he 'could care less' about something you posted. Ask how much less he could care. But, please be mature and adult about it.
  10. Whenever I see that rioting on tv, I can't help but think of Eurotrash's MOCs. I'll drop by the mall sometime this week to grill the store manager on coming attractions. The 5500 piece flower shop will be on the list of questions. To all of our UK readers, I'm watching Burnley as I write this. The league may need a special, early relegation this year.
  11. If the police know where they were stolen from, they may be held for evidence before being returned to the rightful owner. Or, if insurance covered the loss, the insurance company would probably have a right to them.
  12. Well, mostly blank stares. But some good answers like.... '......well, sir, it's coming out right after we release the 8000 piece sagrada familia with its 93 minifigs.' I suppose I deserve more answers like that one.....
  13. Maybe so. But, and I'm not speaking in absolutes, this website is cluttered with information from store managers, employees etc that proved to be totally inaccurate. As far as GE goes, there must be a shipping container or warehouse full of them somewhere.....at least judging by Lego.com and the late September availability. Maybe game over for these sets at the store, but not at Lego.com. One of my fun games now is to trade misinformation with the local lego store employees and management. Like, when is the 6000 piece Peterbilt tractor trailer set going to be available?
  14. Hey, totallynewlegofan, props for bringing gasoline to a fire. Your post and the subsequent comments provided a lot of laughs as I drank my Starbucks cafe mocha this morning. Again, thanks for the entertainment.
  15. ^ Thanks. I did one where I used the 32 wide plate and build two 16 wide three story victorian style (loosely) houses on it. The second one is where I took the HH, started building it and modified it to modular standards as I went along. One day I'll get motivated and establish an account where I can post photos. But as of now, hey, just not worth the effort. As little as it might take. Btw, Herky, any toy stores looted down the road? Is there Lego in the streets? :-)
  16. Thanks to all for a good laugh. This thread is a hoot.
  17. Very nice. Thanks for sharing.
  18. Right. It isn't a modular. But, it's easy to make it fit in. I've bought two of them and converted both so they fit in with the modular theme. I start building and keep a pile of extra parts near by. I lose the hinges, create modular style floors and lose the distressed look associated with the windows. But, as issued, it certainly isn't a modular. But it certainly is easy to modify.
  19. While I appreciate your efforts, I think your subject matter does not easily, or maybe not at all, translate to lego. And, I think you've probably done as well as anyone could with this idea.
  20. Like all investments, and I'll be generous enough to call lego and collectibles in general an investment, there are peaks, valleys, bubbles, etc. I collect old radios. I'm looking at one that in the early 90s sold for at least $15,000 USD. If you could find someone who would part with one. I bought mine for $9000 in 2008. I could probably sell it for $7000 today. Of course, lego has a wide following with decades of interest behind it. But, so did other collectibles that peaked and then sustained a significant drop in value. I like to look at ebay sales of the high dollar lego sets. Like 10179. Many of the ones marked sold appear not to have really been sold. Re listings, lack of feedback, shill bids, etc. Of course some do sell at a high price. But there's a big difference between asking price and selling price. There will always be rationalizations as to why lego is the exception to the rule. Maybe it is. I certainly don't know. The important thing is to like what you collect. That way, even if the investment aspect of it doesn't pan out, you're still enjoying it.
  21. In my opinion, this is better than ANYTHING released by TLG in at least the past year. Outstanding. Simply outstanding. Of course, the retail price on something like this might just limit the market. :-)
  22. I apologize. Guess I'm just bummed out about both sides of my family, confederates and Indians, losing their battles with the government in Washington, D.C. Sore loser. That about sums it up.
  23. Yep. I don't doubt there was a theft. But, many of the 'facts' just don't ring true to me.
  24. Yep, and based on the photos I've seen, most of the sets retail for under $300. Most. Well, heck, most under $150.
