With the less expensive 6x24 black train base, you could add 2x6 black plates at each end to lengthen it to 28. You may have to extend the couplers further out to couple with the other cars. Putting the battery box over the train motor will help with traction. It is not necessary to use a phone/tablet with Powered UP for controlling trains. There is a Powered Up train speed remote.

If you don't have a printer, you can send your custom designs to a print shop to be printed on vinyl. If you can wait, you send the job overseas for a bigger cost savings. Our LUG had custom water, desert and green vinyl mats printed. We laid out several images on a large sheet and cut them to size when received the printout. It was cheaper that way. We used them for our event displays. Quick easy roll up into a tube at the end of the day.

If it is leaked by LEGO then the release date should be soon. Otherwise, you'll be giving your competitors more lead time to come out with their version of your product.

Great job modifying 7710. I used to enjoy pushing it around during breaks in writing lab reports.

I think it is doable in virtual reality. There is one way to find out. IRL, grab some parts and build it.

PF battery packs 58119/16511
dr_spock replied to Philo's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Nice. The non-surface mounted resettable fuse looks much easier to remove if you don't want it. -
I think I see you hiding around the corner.

18+ means you can tell your kids this is daddy's set, you can't play with it until you're 18. Also I can't buy this for you since you're not 18 yet.

LEGO, Quo Vadis? Some Thoughts on a New Business Model
dr_spock replied to legotownlinz's topic in General LEGO Discussion
That's why as a large company you can let someone else run with the niche. Once they grow that market segment enough to make it worth your while, then you can try to acquire them. -
EV 3 Medium Motor Query (HELP)
dr_spock replied to doug72's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
That would be like Power Functions XL-motor vs a PF M-motor. 45502 is larger and has more torque. 45503/99455 is smaller and has less torque. Which one is best would depend on the specific application requirements. I have used a 99455 to run a GBC display with an EV3 as a stupidly expensive start button for kids to press. -
Welcome aboard, Nick. Bricks in the Six is rescheduled for 2021. There is the Greater Toronto Train Show on October 3-4, 2020. No cancelation announced yet but organizers are monitoring the situation. We will be there with our LEGO trains layout if it's still a go.

Nice work and function. Looks like there might be enough of a gap between the bottom of the car and top of the rails to have a motorized tray (like a 5x6 panel?) come out to capture the ice blocks and take them back inside the ice house. Then the fun part will be hacking an auto-reloader mechanism. GBC balls are easier since they can roll down a slope into a loader.

Fix for a burned out a PF train motor
dr_spock replied to Coal Fired Bricks's topic in LEGO Train Tech
To repair yourself, you have to determine the failure and which bit to fix. Did you melt the insulation on the motor windings? Worn down the communicators? Broken a wire in the PF cable? A multimeter would be a useful diagnostic tool. -
MOCs vs Official Sets

Wouldn't using MOC instructions be paint by numbers too? -
I have some Lifelites. They're ok if you don't disassemble them very often. It is not hard to rip their tiny wires out of their tiny connectors. I use inexpensive 5mm Chinese eBay LEDs too. You can also wire wrap LED leads if you have a wire wrapping tool. DIY means you can cut your wires to the exact length needed. With Lifelites and others you have to buy their extension wires and/or stash excess lengths of wires somewhere.

I don't think it is critical that the idea has working physics. Some lucky TLG designers will get to sort it ouf if the idea submission makes it that far.

The set's lack of monkey representation is a serious issue. Monkeys do not monkey around on such a serious issue.

How about the new Amtrak Acela (2)? It seems generic enough as a toy train to look like other high speed trains in other parts of the world. It could be a candidate with wider regional reach and appeal. Besides who wouldn't want more dark blue?

Weathering Lego Train (The dark side).
dr_spock replied to Coal Fired Bricks's topic in LEGO Train Tech
I don't weather my LEGO®. I like my LEGO® toy world to be shiny and clean but I've painted LEGO® for name bricks and stuff. Inexpensive dollar store acrylic craft paints can be rubbed off LEGO® with a wet towel. They might be an option if you want your weathering to be reversible and reuse the bricks for other MOCs.- 6 replies

The quick fix might be to take the old train forum banner (Sante Fe EMD F-unit loco and the minifigs) and modify it to work with the new forum software, if that is feasible?
