Lego Technic 2h 2013
DLuders replied to sama's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Most Lego sets are bought by parents trying to find a birthday gift for their son or daughter. They see some relatively inexpensive Lego set in the local Toys-R-Us store, Wal-Mart, Argos, etc. and buy it. They won't go for the complex, 2,600-piece, $200+ Technic set because (1) it's too expensive, and (2) it looks too complex for their kiddie to handle. Besides, they are used to dealing with the Lego "System" studded-brick style of building (when their toddler may have worked with Lego Duplo blocks), and not with Lego "Technic" studless building style. As Blakbird, Paul Boratko and others have noted, many people still view Lego Technic as not being "real" Lego. I'm sure Lego Technic sales are increasing but TLG learned from its difficult years when it lost money. It's being CAUTIOUS since much of the world is in economic doldrums right now.- 902 replies

The Artifex Creation shows how the Brick Duster brushes can buff-out scratches in the Lego ABS plastic tiles. -
All of the above pricing is PURE SPECULATION -- nobody knows for sure yet except The Lego Group.

Sunny Koo posted this YouTube video of his Lego Mindstorms IR Link Sensor testing with the Lego Technic 9398 4x4 Crawler. The device is made by HiTechnic (where there are software programs available for download), and is certified by The Lego Group (for all you "purists" out there): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8Ipcy7otZM

@ francisalmario: What a good deal you got for that set! Are you going to build the primary model, or one of the alternates that Neil1968 pictured in the post just before yours? -
Lego Technic 2h 2013
DLuders replied to sama's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yes, but the Legends of Chima theme is marketed a lot more heavily than Technic. In the USA (at least), the typical Wal-Mart store has 20+ "Legends of Chima" sets but NO Technic sets for sale. That indicates the relative level of expected sales (and profits) for The Lego Group.- 902 replies

Lego Technic 2h 2013
DLuders replied to sama's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Yes, the upcoming 42009 Mobile Crane MkII set has ~2,600 pieces and will be expensive. On this thread, many people are saying that they won't be able to buy it AND other 2H2013 sets. New part moulds cost $100,000+ to manufacture. Will The Lego Group make a profit on an even more complex (read "more expensive") set with newly-made parts? Probably not.- 902 replies

Model Team
DLuders replied to Paul B Technic's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
The LEGO Model Team Sets have not been produced since 2004; see the last one below (10151, a re-release of the 5541 Blue Fury Hot Rod from 1995). Perhaps the set that is most admired is the 5571 Giant Truck from 1996. There are several Adult Fan of Lego (AFOL) builders who like building in the "Model Team" style. The closest LEGO theme nowadays is the "Creator" theme, but the level of detail and number of parts is not the same as the old "Model Team" theme.... -

R/C Unimog
DLuders replied to legotechnicblue's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
@ legotechnicblue: Do you mean the AWD 4+R Transmission (not "4WD") that is available for purchase at the bottom of this webpage? It's pictured above. There doesn't seem to be any room in the 8110 Unimog U400 set for that transmission (chassis renders from Blakbird's Brickshelf Gallery): -
On this Shop.Lego.com webpage for all of the existing Lego Power Functions items, the PF M-Motor costs USD $7.49 and the PF XL Motor costs USD $9.99. I'm speculating that the PF L-Motor and the PF Servo Motor will cost USD $9.99 also, but who knows but TLG?

@ AndyCW: Those RC4WD Rock Crusher X/T 2.2 Tires have these dimensions: * Outer Diameter: 5.5" (139mm) * Width: 1.97" (50mm) * Inner Diameter: 2.2" (56mm) * Each tire weight: 6.15 oz / 174 g The Lego 32197 "Wheel 81.6 x 34 ZR Three Spoke Swirl" has an 81.6mm Outside Diameter (O.D.) -- that's too far different from the Rock Crusher X/T 2.2 Tires' 56mm Inside Diameter (I.D.) to fit. Moreover, the width of the wheel (34mm) is way too narrow for the tire's 50mm width. The typical RC-type offroad tires have stretchy rubber, but they can't stretch THAT MUCH.

@ Porty: The Lego Customer Service person will tell you the price of the parts when you place your telephone order. The prices are not inexpensive, but often you can get an item in great quantities. They only sell parts from sets produced in the last 5 years (so, no "Power Puller" tires or wheels are available anymore). When they "sell out", that's it.
-
I received the four Rok Lox Micro Comp Tires to see how they fit well on the 56145 "Wheels 30.4mm D. x 20mm with No Pin Holes and Reinforced Rim". They look nice on the 1H2013 42010 Off Road Racer set. The rubber is quite pliable, and the tire's profile looks much more realistic than the low-profile Lego balloon tires that came with the set. In a real buggy, the wheels would be bent on the first big hole they encountered; that's why real offroad tires have a high profile to better absorb the bumps. Another benefit is that, with the 42010's pullback motor, the Off Road Racer can travel farther and faster with the larger-diameter tires:

Yes, the various new Lego Power Functions motors are "will not be available through LEGO.com until March 2013" per these Lego.com webpages: 88003 L-Motor, 88004 Servo Motor. The 8884 PF v2 Receiver shown on this webpage does not say when it's available from LEGO.com, but let's assume that it's the same as the above motors. There was no update to the 8885 PF Remote. March is only 4 weeks away....

@ Porty: That's not a problem for folks like Paul Boratko and others who use "Lego Direct" (orders from Lego Customer Service). Once we know what the Lego Element IDs are (not the Bricklink part numbers), The Lego Group will sell their excess parts to anybody with a credit card. The last time I made a "Lego Direct" order, I could get up to 10 different line items.

LDD MOD parts
DLuders replied to Nachapon Bricks's topic in Digital LEGO: Tools, Techniques, and Projects
@ bbqqq: Before one downloads your LDD .lxf file and possibly "crashes" the program, could you tell us what your computer's Operating System, CPU speed, and RAM is? Did it CRASH your computer, or are you just saying that it COULD crash less-capable computers than yours? -
@ Hedgie: You will be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to upload your MOC to Rebrickable. You can use your LDraw file to automatically upload all of the parts. It may take you 5 minutes to do everything (linking to your PDF Building Instruction File, your video, LDraw file, etc.) You WILL need a good photograph of your MOC, however.
