10305 Lion Knights' Castle 90th anniversary set
jodawill replied to R0Sch's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
You think because Lego made a profit last year, they should have to eat the cost of inflation and rising oil prices? They aren't running a charity. They deserve to be compensated for the work they do. They don't owe us anything. And we still don't even know what the final price will be on this set.- 2,976 replies

The new monkey looks fine if it's any other toy. But to me, these animal redesigns have removed the "Lego" look altogether. It might as well be Mega Bloks. I hope this is not a complete replacement for the old monkey. If we start seeing this mold in pirate sets, I'll be very sad.

Have you also had trouble with the plate-built yards from that period? I always felt like I was building it wrong. But I followed the instructions, and it just didn't fit right.

If you don't want it, you can give it to me! I can see how someone would hate this set if they didn't grow up during this era. I've never owned one, but I spent hours looking at the pictures in the Armada issue of Mania Magazine when I was a kid, imaging all sorts of adventures with them. I love the minigures, and even the color scheme. The only thing I don't like is the way they built the yards in the '90s. I have Redbeard Runner, and I love that set, but the yards don't really fit correctly and I'm not a fan of the way they're built with plates. I would have preferred some specialized pieces for that.

This is amazing! You should add a Zorro minifigure to it.

10305 Lion Knights' Castle 90th anniversary set
jodawill replied to R0Sch's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
I think I'm in the minority, but I actually love panels and BURPs, even as they were exposed in the '90s. I love big pieces that let you build the monotonous stuff quickly, like Fort Legoredo. Would it have been fun to build all the walls out of 2x4 and 2x2 log bricks? Not really. The panels even look better because there are fewer cracks. I downsized my collection a few years ago, and I just kept my favorite sets sorted by theme. Now my 6 year old son and I pull out a tub when we want to build, and we make forts and castles in about 30 minutes using the panels, and we probably spend more than half our time adding the fun details. This is what I miss about the older Lego sets. I think the sets with lots of smaller pieces probably appeal to more artistic people than me. When I build, I like to make things up as I'm adding the minifigures and stuff. Not stories so much, but situations. The pirates are attacking the blue coats, the monkey is stealing the gold, etc. I get a lot more enjoyment from that type of stuff than I do from making structures with extra fine details. When I was a kid, that's largely the kind of stuff I paid attention to in the magazines. So I hope the anniversary set is more of a quick build. I'm also really excited about the prospect of the forestmen returning. The troubadour was the best minifigure they've made in years IMO, and I hope it pairs well with the new set.- 2,976 replies

Some people may have found it humorous. Personally, I thought it was distasteful and entitled. The author knew it was mean spirited and not funny. This is the equivalent of YouTube "pranksters" saying, "It was just a joke, bro!" Again, I'm not against April Fools things in general. People have posted several good ones here. There just seems to be a wave of not funny, and even mean spirited things this year.
-
That's not funny either. It's just misinformation with no humor. If it weren't for the disclaimer at the bottom, I would have no way of knowing whether that's real. (Real news does also happen on this day.) I'm not against April Fools day, but if it's not clear whether something is a "joke," it ceases to be funny.
-
Not all that funny. I know a lot of people who would actually buy that. Actually, I know people who already do have them. Life sized klickies are also popular among Playmobil fans. I can guarantee you that product would sell out quickly. This one is funny: https://www.thebrickfan.com/lego-galidor-20th-anniversary-theme-announced/ Well, slightly funnier, anyway. When did April Fools become a day when people just go on the internet and lie? I just saw the Lego duck heist thing. That's not funny either. It's just fake news.

What are the floors made out of, and how did you stick those tan technic pins on the bush thing?
-
I agree that the power functions are completely unnecessary. They actually make it seem cheap to me. I think they could have actually used metal tines to create the sound. I love the mechanical stuff in this set, but I would be more likely to buy it if they didn’t include the powered stuff. I'm curious - could you make the piano thicker if you don't include the powered stuff, or do the mechanical parts also require that much space?

Black classic space helmet in 43179 Mickey/Minnie Mouse
jodawill replied to jodawill's topic in LEGO Sci-Fi
The old version averages $6.49 used on Bricklink. I imagine this new one will be much cheaper, especially if it ends up in Bricks & Pieces. -
Pardon me if this is being discussed somewhere else, but I wasn't able to find a thread where people are talking about this. Check out the Mickey and Minnie's noses in 43179. Do my eyes deceive me, or are these black classic space helmets???

When I saw this on thebrickfan, I thought it was using metal rods to play the notes. If it's true that it only plays through your phone and the keys don't play individual notes, that's super disappointing for me. Maybe some people will modify it though.

I just watched Jang's video about this, and I think he's right. I'm not sure where the idea originated that it was this tiny protest that caused TLG to do this. It obviously wasn't considering how small it was. I'm not happy with this "cancel culture" in general, but I'm glad to see that isn't the case here. I wonder if the people in leadership didn't realize that this plane(?) is a military exclusive, and the people who make the decisions only found out when they received negative feedback.
-
The Indiana Jones sets literally had Nazis with machine guns. There's not much that hasn't been said here already, but I'd like to add my vote here and say I'm also of the opinion that this "cancel culture" BS is ridiculous. But what bothers me almost as much is how everything Lego makes these days has to be licensed. You have to expect this type of "controversy" (if you can call it that) to happen when you associate yourself with another business. Why not just stop all this licensed crap and go back to traditional LEGO System?

[WIP] 6255 Golden Medallion Comic - Colorization and DTP
jodawill replied to RedbeardsCove's topic in LEGO Pirates
That image restoration is absolutely amazing. For some reason, I've just never seen anyone touch up old Lego images before. Most of the scans online are pretty crappy. I'm so excited to see this stuff brought back to life! I have a four year old soon who loves old Lego stories, and he's going to be ecstatic when he sees this. I'll have to find a place that will print it properly, like a real comic book! -
[WIP] 6255 Golden Medallion Comic - Colorization and DTP
jodawill replied to RedbeardsCove's topic in LEGO Pirates
This is absolutely fantastic! Thank you so much for doing this! I can't wait to read this to my son. If you'd like to do some work on The Golden Medallion, I can send you my original scans. And you probably already saw this, but one of our fellow members also posted the work he did in this thread: Does anyone have the front cover to this sequel? -
I think this photo explains my opinion of this set better than I could ever put into words: They've made my points so well, comparing this thing to the real car, with a depiction to the right of what this model looks like (the brown stuff in the shovel).

The Golden Medallion – looking for a Photoshop expert
jodawill replied to jodawill's topic in LEGO Pirates
Hey there fellow brickolino! Thank you so much for doing this! It looks way better than the original scans. Maybe at some point we'll even be able to reprint the comic and make it look just like the original. I'll print one for my son. I daren't give him the original, but he loves this book. That's what originally prompted me to do these scans. One year later, it's finally ready.
