Delightful signage! Great modular build. Well done!

Nice to see the official pics. Im sure this set will make alot of people happy! The house is done well. I probably won't have a budget for this and metalbeards ship. As it stands its the ship for me. Pass sadly!

Looks better than i thought it would. I wasn't expecting it to be that many pieces either. Still not set on the fig heads. Suppose i might come round with some of the other characters in other sets.

Hi, thanks! To be honest I knew the I wanted the pavement to be deep enough to accommodate a queue for the outside of the building. The vertical windows were built in 2 large sections. By the time I made the ground level to support it, whatever was left became the pavement. Perhaps in retrospect I would have made the pavement even bigger and put some trees or something in. All of the building except for the road is built on base plates for stability and so the road can be 'tacked-on' and taken off easily so I can move for photos. There is no support underneath the road so it tends to sag if I make it too big. I wasn't aware of your standard before I started any of these larger scaled projects but it looks great! Hi, thanks Venunder and Paperballpark! I have not done a traditional style modular for the last few MOC's I have made. I don't have any particular layout as I don't have the room so I just build a MOC at a time so I have the freedom for any size and scale. Some of the building techniques I have used usually span several floors and having to split the floors into stack-able sections stops the 'flow' of what I want to do. The width of the buildings means the floors would become very heavy and fragile. I also double line walls so I can get different colours and patterns on the inside to whats on the outside, I feel any style I choose won't be seen very well from a top-down view as I have experienced in the past. I suppose even the official modulars have their walls removed so they can photo the inside from 'side-on'. Sadly it doesn't connect to the other modulars, its slightly out of normal scale at 80x40 to the pavement and raised by a couple of studs. I hope this helps you understand why I choose to build this way Hi Nick, thank you! Getting the palace cinema earlier this year really got me thinking about my own ideas and what I like about cinema design and that's what spurred me on! I would guess it took 6000-8000 bricks. This could probably be changed with 'larger' bricks. I pretty much exhausted my tan collection! I make my designs up as I go along, since there is so many cinema designs I was really inspired and changed my mind about what I wanted to do throughout the project. This is probably why it takes so long to complete! I usually design my 'main features' and work the rest around it. In this case I knew I wanted inset film 'posters', a curved corner, vertical windows and a large bold name on the side. I didn't map it out as much as I usually would I just designed the ground floor and made everything else around it. Thankfully the space I left for lettering was quite forgiving! Cheers! Hi Wodanis, I designed loads of doors before I settled with these ones! Glad you like them. I thought the normal doors wouldn't look right on a building like this. It took a couple months to build and sadly it will be destroyed like the others to make way for something else as I don't have a huge selection of bricks or the room to house these heavy and difficult to move models

The soft opening was on Friday, the grand opening hasn't taken place yet. The member of staff I spoke to couldn't confirm the date or gift.

I don't know many small independent shops that sell lego. In newcastle fenwicks has a decent selection but overpriced. I know jl has a good selection aswell and has some modulars/exclusives even discounted at the moment which are usually decent for a parts to price ratio. I was in the metro on Friday to check the new store but didn't think too much of the pab section either. Here's hoping it improves!

Thanks! A lot of the art deco effect such as the vertical cheeses and ziggurat columns I have had as ideas to use them before but never found the appropriate type of building to put them in. There is a lot of less stable techniques here but I felt I could get away with it as the roof is so lightweight and has nothing to support! I am particularly pleased the colour scheme has went down well, I had reservations about going with blue originally. Thanks. It's always extremely flattering to be Front paged. My thanks to Rick for that! Haha! My budget for this model was quite small as I usually take these bigger sets a part as they take up so much room. It's the most boring experience ever but I then have all my bricks to choose from for another project. Thanks! The lettering came about really quickly and if anything determined the whole height of the building. It was difficult finding material of the original interiors of cinemas as a lot of them have sadly been destroyed or updated and original details stripped out. I was going to have a large sweeping curved staircase originally but had to scale back that ambition, I suppose it may have made the lobby look smaller! To be honest it was just a bit of last minute fun. When I was going through my minifig heads the I felt compelled to use the angry female face! I didn't go as far as making a scene on the back seats of the cinema auditorium! Thank you very much! But what next..............

Thank you Thanks! The floor was a challenge, although there is a lot of pressure on the surrounding bricks. Its actually slightly bigger at 80x40, it took forever to get the dimensions right! Cheers! The lettering was one of the most important factors in designing the scale of the building. Thanks L@go, I was concerned it would seem to dark going with blue instead of traditional red but I wanted a different colour palette to the official modular cinema. Thanks timmyc!, the windows were a big challenge, they are also not very stable! Thanks, there is such a great variety in cinema designs I look forward to seeing what you make! Cheers lightningtiger! It's definitely my niche, hopefully I can still think of more Art-Deco ideas in the future. There certainly was a lot of cheese's, thank goodness for the PAB wall! Thank you very much laka! Thanks, that's very flattering! Thanks! I made a brick built film for the screen but it was so abysmal and I had to leave it out! :) You'll have to make up for lost time with lots of MOC's! :)

Hello everyone. Here is my latest creation - The Monde cinema. (Monde roughly translating into 'World' in French) I've wanted to build a cinema for quite some time now, after getting the palace cinema it really pushed me into making my own. It is of a 1920-30's design using some Egyptian and Mayan styling. The Grand-Rex in Paris was my inspiration on exterior proportions. I chose a french name for the Cinema in homage. I spent a huge amount of time checking out interior and exterior styling of Cinema's and this changed the design throughout the build. It took me forever to decide on the right dimensions. I didn't want to make it too deep to restrict light for photos at the back. I felt if it was too tall the figs would look out of proportion. I also didn't want to make a huge auditorium full of seats with a very tall ceiling. I felt it wouldn't be much to look at. I was more interested in making a tall welcoming lobby with a more detailed floor design and 'slight' windows. The challenge I set myself was to make working brick built doors and brick built windows. There is also a bar downstairs to break up the fascia at the front and lower the height of the auditorium. It's taken several months to complete but has been a fun project. Here is a few sample pics The rest of the pictures can be found here http://www.flickr.co...157638125748846 Comments welcome!

Very cool. Excellent job for your first official moc!

Excellent, colours work very well. I also like the interior detailing and the extension and the back. Great job!

Great review. For me this set does not disappoint! Those pieces used for lampshades and plant pots will be very useful in the future. Roll on the official release!

Great diorama. I like the pavement area, staggered height roof and of course how everything is covered in snow! The red windows are very fitting for a winter themed building. Well done!
-
Nice job. The foyer looks much more welcoming and 'polished' than the original. Well done!

Building MOCs like official sets

I like my models to be stable even though they don't move from my desk after I've built them. I'm an 'engineer' in real life and I think I apply this to my models even if it's unintentional. I use a lot of SNOT in my buildings but more for aesthetics rather than supporting other bricks I've seen amazing uses of hands/tubing and the such but I don't really copy those methods. It sounds boring but I like to experiment more with combining colours and textures. It's probably the modular buildings that set me off this way. Although I will admit to using perhaps more bricks than I should, but if there is an area that is going to be hidden I just stick any old bricks in! If no one see's it, who cares? -
I'm certainly not disappointed with this modular, very charming building! I feel maybe the last two modular were average by the series standards but nowhere near as special as this. It may just pip the greengrocer for me as my favorite so far which I thought would take some doing! I like the fact the side is broken up with the steps, gives more to look at! I'm not too bothered how deep the building is as my modulars sit on the shelf in a line so its not something I notice. As for the pieces, a decent piece count, assuming its coming in as the replacement for grand emporium at that price point, we actually get slightly more. Love that scooter, also the large use of olive green and for me a generous amount of accessories. Is that a new 2x2 round tile with a stud on at the base of the lamps? If it is then that's a very welcomed element for me! Most of the minifig torso's I have but I'm not disheartened by this, I'm happier they spent the budget on a tiled floor and interior details. On a final point I really love how the roof opens up at the back for access, nice to break up the tradition a little, its done very well!

Nice work, I really like the idea of the atrium, makes it look inviting to go inside. The only thing I find unusual is the larger window above the smaller one at the front. I don't think I've seen that before, is it based on a real building? Good choice using white as an interior colour, it bring attention to all the items inside. Keep up the good work!

Just built mine last week as well. Bit disappointed with the build personally but think it makes a good parts pack. First set I've ever bought with a damaged brick upon opening. Suppose it had to happen sometime!

Thanks, yeah it was hollow and fragile until I think I used a random assortment of long beams and arches to stabilize the sides. They were going to be hidden anyway! I also used plates one thick around the bottom of the slopes to hold them together and stop them falling off with the slightest knock. Best of luck. I'm very interested to see the outcome!

Impressive scale. Wish I had that much dark red! I like the central column and doors on the ground floor. Very nice. I like the bustling street scene outside. Great job!

Hi, I made a terraced street with houses last year, I used many 2x4 slopes, it perhaps was not as long as yours will be but I used the chimney walls to support the roof. There might be something you can decipher from here; http://www.flickr.com/photos/52656812@N04/8183155919/in/set-72157632002462088/ There were only short distances between the chimneys to there wasn't much 'sagging' in the middle but I did contemplate using the 1x5x5 half arches but felt it was not necessary. Perhaps that's something you could use. Good luck!

I think it looks really good from the front and the back, perhaps the length and height make the wheels look a bit small by comparison for a car of this era IMO. You have done a really good job at tapering the nose looking down the front, nice use of chrome as well. Well done!
