I like the use of masonry bricks and plates to create texture around those wallpieces. It is surprisingly effective. The little warehouse in general is very nice, including the roof. Quite grim subject matter with the grave though! Big drama!

[ESL - Ch5A] Not who he was expecting
Bregir replied to Capt Wolf's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Fascinating and well-thought out story, Capt. And The story is told very well in those pictures. Of course, I really like that floor, but the bed is a highlight too, as is the choice of expressions. A suggestion could have been to make a two tiered build showing Maria manipulate the prince on one level, and then this scene on another. 16x16 isn't much, but a bit of creativity can give you a lot more to work with. -
[ESL - CH5A] An Unsuspected Surprising Surprise
Bregir replied to Legostone's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Nice to see you building something land based, for once, LS! I like the two houses, with their nicely subdued colourscheme. The greenish one is my favourite, and I think the white/tan one could do with a bit more work to make the walls look better, but overall, good work. I like the protruding beams, and the choice of windows are nice too. The story is good too! Your pictures seems a bit yellowish, so perhaps a bit more work on lighting would be useful? Perhaps it is time for you to try your hand more on shore? (At least then, the rest of us get a chance to keep up with your shipyards! ) -
Interesting story and nicely looking inn, Maxim. I like the way he makes his way to his victim, and both inside and out the inn is well built, particularly the furniture and the creeping vines. I am not too much of a fan of the bee-guard, but I suppose it works! Good work!

Hear ye, hear ye! Are you concerned about the risk of sending your ships to sea? Contact the Weelond Insurance Inc. to sleep better at night! Best regards Matthijs Honig

Thanks, guys. It was a rather "quick" build to get the insurance company established after a discussion in leadership, but I did go for keeping the quality up to par. I think black might have been as out of place as the dark green, but brown would have gone nicely with the door. I don't think I have any, though. I figured it was the most fitting place for an insurance company, at least, so perhaps! Doesn't the council take care of this? Then what am I paying taxes for? I will insure warships, but that would require a different renumeration. Thanks for the heads-up. For free ships, that is all the same to me. If I get 1/3 of trading proceeds, it can be insured.

;My rigging is perfectly taut. In fact, it has been from my very first BoBS ship. I am, in general, not using blocks for the standing rigging, as it adds a lot to the complexity. If you will notice, on my 18 gun ship-sloop, I have used your method of 1x1 round plates in the hull to anchor the chains, and together with a sturdy hull construction, it is a very solid build. (I am not even worried by lifting her by any of the topmasts. In fact, that is how I move her around.) -

Matthijs Honig had been carrying around this idea for a long time, but had been in need of financing. He had seen businessmen bankrupted by bad luck, while others had been blessed by unbelievable luck, and he believed there had to be a fairer way of distributing risk and reward. Recently, he had met a man called Ibn al'Sayeed, who had offered to finance his idea. And so, with 1.000 dbs backing from the Montoya estate, he had purchased an office in Weelond and set up shop. The first few captains were already approaching, and he was sure business would be brisk. The Weelond Insurance company will insure all trading vessels at 100 % of their license value in return for 1/3 of any trading proceeds. Warships are insured for 1/3 of licensing costs. Shipowners can sign up their ships until the publication of the MRCA results. The company will have its own accounts, but the Montoya Estate offers 1.000 dbs as security, should the business not be able to sustain itself. Please contact the insurance company for special deals on multiple vessels! So go ahead and sign up your ships in this thread. (Also, the build will be licensed as a small commerce.)

I am more or less in agreement with Legostone, although I would be very careful with metal, as it can easily damage the bricks. A third (/fourth?) solution would be simply not reinforcing them. In this build: I didn't use any internal reinforcement for its masts. Instead, I had it firmly set in place by the standing rigging (shrouds and stays) and that actually hold it quite well in place. Of course, if you apply any horisontal pressure on the middle of the mast, it will easily collapse (which did happen a few times while I was rigging her), but after it was all in place, it was quite sturdy. Also, welcome! -
@Elostirion: I have posted it in the leadership forum. We will take a look at it, when we find the time. You are definitely right that the town bank rules could need a rework, and you have some good suggestions. Note that Ska is still working on the mrca results, and that we are in the progress of building a new MRCA, amongst other things, so you may experience some delay before we get to this. Whether Phred or Ska will get back to you on your questions before then, I naturally cannot say! And I have no good answers to your questions off the top of my head myself.

Oh, the tragedy of young lovers being engulfed in the horrors of politics! Very interesting (and effective!) landscaping technique, Silentwolf! I think your tree is pretty good, although I think the round 1x1 cannonball bricks might look a bit out of place. It's nice and gnarly, but perhaps some more lower branches would work? I am in no way an expert on trees, but you asked! ;) Nice build and story, and as Ayrlego, I love recurring characters!
-
I will echo what Ayrlego said: Always a pleasure working with you. I would recommend everyone trying out collabs, as it is great fun, and the cooperation can really improve your builds alot. I almost think we should share our first editions of these builds, Elos, as the both of us made massive improvements after getting feedback! As I think I've said elsewhere, I love this build - the textures are great, and you have pumped a massive amount of action into it without it seeming cramped. Very well done. And of course, I think we have created a great story!

[COR-FB1-Feb17] Fisherman´s Wharf, Mooreton Bay
Bregir replied to Brickwolf's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Nice wharf, Brickwolf. I like the boat with its mast, net, and cargo. Good way to make the prefab boats come to life. The little house is nice too, as is the cargo on land. I would suggest finishing off the top of the roof in some way, as the exposed studs look a bit off. Keep up the good work! -
A disassembled, unfolded one would be a great help and inspiration. :) Heh, I thought so. No rush! Even you you fail and choose something other than Corrington, I am certain you will be welcomed here! ;)

Cool! I was wondering if that was the case but couldn't figure it out from what I could see. :) But I suppose I can see it in the google drive link? I will check it out later, as it may be useful for mardierian soldiers for the challenge. Also, did I miss your sign-up? (or perhaps forget!? Horrribly confused these days) I have been looking forward for it so long! :)

Geese? Where? *pulls out shotgun* For the record, I like the printouts, but as BD, I am not a fan of stickers. I wonder if a similar effect could be reached by something that is simply attached to the torsoes similarly to how capes are attached?

Shipwrights Guild Hall (WIPs, feedback, and advice)
Bregir replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Those are staysails, hung on the stays (rigging holding up the masts), so there is no "beam" in there, I promise you! That would be a gaff sail, most likely. Sometimes called a spanker. Try to look up sailplan on wikipedia. From there, there are links to many different links to understanding rigging. You can look up barque or barquantine too, in their main topics, should the small diagrams be unsufficient. I find it a very good source, and after wikipedia gives you the terms, you can always look up pictures on google In general, if we say something you don't understand, I recommend looking it up on wikipedia. Even if your first language isn't english, it is often a better solution than translation. Personally, at least, getting the danish version of a naval term is close to useless to me Especially compared to the pictures and explanations of wikipedia or google. And noone is saying you shouldn't, or that your efforts are not good enough. I like your alternative approach, and enjoy following the projects of you and others, novice or expert (whatever that means) . Our feedback only represents suggestions, and we may have a tendency to seek realistic solutions when giving advice, but that shouldn't stop you from doing something more fantasy-y I hope you do not feel anyone is belittling your attempts, patronizing you, or similar. I assure you (and everyone else) that is not the intention, even if some of us sound a bit geeky at time! -

Bregir replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Probably a good idea I would agree with making the three first identical in height, should you go for four masts. However, should you decide to make them differ in height, I would make the second mast the tallest, it being the mainmast... -

@Kolonialbeamter: Interesting! Do I spy a likeness to the Triton in overall design? Will be looking forward to seeing more. @Legostone: It is hard to keep up with you! I haven't had time to comment yet, and you have already posted it! Looking nice, nonetheless. And nicely taut rigging! On my 18 gun sloop, I can lift her by the topmast cross-tress too, but I doubt I will test it by the topgallants. @Jacob Nion: You spurred my curiousity! I hadn't seen the silent mary, but went and checked her out to figure what you were talking about. As to your questions, I think it is an original idea. At least, I don't remember seeing anything like it. Sometimes, sterngalleries would have something along the same lines on corners and such, but never as towers like so. And as someone else said, placing a cannon larger than a swiviel in any of them would probably be problematic. Luckily, ships in bobs do not necessarily need to adhere to such quibbles! Would definitely echo your wish to see something inspired by it. @gedren_y: It's going to be huuuuuuuuge! If possible, I would agree with Kurigan that it would be typical to have guns along the entire length. Your bow is looking pretty good to me. You don't actually have to build her up more, other than adding some headrails - that lower section could be the head. The forecastle typically doesn't extend all the way forward. (although I would add about three more of those slopes to extend the forecastle further forward. If I were you, I would put a bit more work in the stern/cabin area. Look up some pictures to see how it is typically built. In any case, I will be looking forward to seeing how you solve that. As to rigging, I think a four master could be fun. Either a barque (all masts but the aftmost one square rigged, with the last being fore and aft rigged) or a barquantine (foremast square rigged, the rest fore and aft rigged). @Captain Genaro: Oh my, she is shaping up beautifully! I am really loving how she is coming along, and I think the shape is very near perfect. I will be very much looking forward to seeing more! As LS, I am not sure what feedback to offer. You already have some beautiful details ready, like that ship's bell (consider it stolen...). My only concern is her structural strength, as it seems you only have hinge plates at deck height. I think this will prove problematic when yous tart rigging her, depending on how you are going to construct the chains. Or will the shrouds be anchored inside the sides? Uuuuh, exciting! I did do a test a while back, trying to use hinges along the side of the vessel, so that I could get those curves, but for some reason I gave up again. For something like this, I think that would be necessary to get the right lines. Can you let your own challenge slide, I wonder? ;) Also, what I really wanted to post was an update of my sloop :P -
At what rate? 15 or 25? And due to the delay, how soon will you start paying the 25 dbs?

And the story continues: Part I Nice little vignette, Elos. The use of cheese slopes (which I hadn't identified at first) is very effective, and the low wall and the pillars give the impression of this being part of a larger building. Always enjoyable cooperating with you, sir, and a great kick-off for our little story!
