  1. The Marquis: Origins - Chapter 5 - The Poker Game The story so far: Chapter 1 - The Interrogation Chapter 2 - Early Days Chapter 3 - The First Mate Chapter 4 - The Storm Chapter 5 - The Poker Game (you are here) Lady Bonny continued: After some time in solitude on the island, the First Mate gathered his courage and decided to leave the island. The boat was still in terrible shape – and he was no carpenter, he was a sailor. So, just because of his seamanship and navigation skills, he barely made it to Oleon. Interrogator: Yes, you have already mentioned that. Lady Bonny: And this is when I first met him, later that same day in October We were sitting in this smoke-filled tavern, playing cards. The Nobleman, the Admiral and myself. The First Mate stepped in, looking as if he would like to join the game. It was a good point in time as that was when the Admiral had just lost everything to the Nobleman. The Admiral offered his seat to the First Mate, but the Nobleman raised his eyebrows and complained: We are playing for money, my friend. What do you have to offer? That seemed to be something new to the First Mate. He had obviously only been playing for fun before. After a moment of hesitation and with a heavy sigh he offered his sword. Slightly frowning, the Nobleman accepted the blade. And so, the game began. After a slow start, where he obviously had to orient himself and was playing very cautiously, the First Mate started to win small sums. He was becoming more and more confident. As if he could memorize where every card was that he had seen before. And then I was out. The cards were not in my favour that day. I sat back and watched. It was only the First Mate against that grumpy Nobleman. And the stakes were high. The First Mate risked every piece of gold he had won so far. The Nobleman cursed: A mere sailor is challenging me? Alright, I offer my title, as I do not have enough gold any more – is that accepted? The First Mate nodded in silence. They were both going all in. The First Mate won with a Royal Flush. He raised his arms in triumph. The nobleman angrily threw his glass to the bottom, tore the wig from his head and threw it on the table. He paused for a moment, then he said: What a disgrace: the Marquis d’Ape beaten by a mere sailor. But I will stick to my word. Here, with this letter you will become the next Marquis d’Ape. Then he turned and left. The new Marquis celebrated. He removed his sailors hat and put on the wig. He has never been seen without it since that very day. Then he was off to make his new title official. We all cheered! Lady Bonny: What he soon learned was that he had got nothing more than the title. The previous Marquis had lost all his wealth and fortune before – he obviously was a frequent but not such a good poker player But the new Marquis seemed determined to restore the pride of his old title! (to be continued) The monkeys have begged me to release this next chapter earlier than usual - to get over the sad last chapter.
  2. http://20200429_152644 by pope.dt06 , on Flickr In the deep jungles of El Oleon, Miguel de Resal and a Carnite officer encounter a Lotii patrol. Although the Lotii quickly melt back into the rainforest, this is a turning point in the war, as Miguel and his comrade have discovered a route used by the Men of the Lotus in their notorious guerilla raids... Nod to @Professor Thaum for the "guerilla ambushes" Hope you like my build, C&C welcome!
  3. After the Long Beard III sank in a storm last month, the shipyard got to work to ready her sistership. The first mate checks in with the gun crews to make sure everything is ready to sail. Just a quick build for sistershipping, but that Roman numeral is getting big, as we're up to the Long Beard IV now!
  4. Guilder walked through the warehouse district. He had a lot on his mind this month; as Eslandola's Secretary of Trade, he was worried about how to protect its trade ships from piracy. Captain Argentum would lead the fleet to sea aboard the Lady Cora ... if it was ready in time. Just then an MCTC courier caught up with him in the street, "Hey, watch where yer goin'!" shouted one of the cargo handlers at the courier. "Sorry, sorry! Very sorry!" he replied. Then he turned to Guilder. "Sir, we've received that report you were waiting for: the Lady is ready to sail." "Ah, I knew Captain Argentum would have Lady Cora ready in time," replied Guilder. "Thank Sol and Luna!" The courier seemed puzzled. "Lady Cora? No sir, I have word about the Cotton Lady II. The sistership for that old cog we lost a few months back is finally ready." You see, Willem Guilder was also director of the Merchants Colonial Trading Company. There was work to be done for the trade company as well. --- A quick build to sistership the Cotton Lady. A couple of extra pics of the build: Seemed like a good excuse to use some of those printed wall panels. All C&C welcome. .
  5. The new frigate's deck was as clean as it would ever be, and the crew went about their business getting the vessel ready for service in anticipation of the new captain's arrival. "Welcome aboard, captain!" There was no formal line-up of the crew, as time was of the essence in preparing La Raya Venenosa II to sail. "Mmpph..." replied the captain, and he immediately headed to his cabin. The lieutenant wasn't sure what to make of this. He hoped it meant the captain had things on his mind for their upcoming mission. --- Sorry I'm light on story. Just a quick build for sistershiping La Raya Venenosa. All C&C welcome.
  6. Previously: Captain Whiffo's Duel... Sailor Leon's Letter... End of the White Doubloon Captain Whiffo paused. It was a long pause (a very long pause - just over two years long, actually... ). ...You- you don't even know what I'm talking about it's been so long. Alright! Well, for those of you who don't remember, the good Captain was just seated in the Dark Green Inn of Port Wilks, telling "a long, thrilling tale of adventure, duels, piratical villains, and rivaling trade companies from the beginning to end!" and he had just lost his Class 2 ship to a Mardierian war fleet and was left in the middle of the ocean on a little tiny raft with his small crew. But it just so happens that he was in that section of the middle of the ocean that is not so very far from the bustling Eslandolan port town of Elysabethtown... (it's not my fault both of those end in town - I didn't name the place.) "And so, after a vast (he said it like, "avast") number of grueling days aboard o' that ol' piece of driftwood," Captain Whiffo was saying, "we finally spotted Elysabethtown in the distance just as our rations of cookies were giving out..." -=- -=- -=- All was bustle and excitement at the docks of Elysabethtown when the famous ETWC captain came riding in that day, his sword glittering in the morning light as he waved it above his head in the crow's nest of the little raft. The docks official and sailors stopped to cheer lustily, and the passersby paused to stare and wave in greeting at the singular sight. Captain Whiffo shook his hookhand in triumph (forgetting, for the moment, that the Mardierians were the ones who had taken his ship away, and not the other way around), and the crew leapt up in delight. "Finally!" exclaimed the Lieutenant, with a cheer, "Captain, we're home free!!" Suddenly the raft underneath them began to tremble and quake, and the beams, battered and old, started to give way and float apart. Captain Whiffo turned to him and shook his fist. "Look at that, Lieutenant! Now you've jinxed us!" But nothing could ever faze Captain Whiffo - and it probably helped that he was on top... And so he rode victoriously, just the same... ...Right up to the dock... ...And landed amidst the stunned observance of all present. ...In a most singular and original unrolling of events totally not stolen from some other famous pirate captain (dear, Captain Whiffo nearly had my head for that "other"...). Anyways, to get back to the story. "Good day sir! Captain Whiffo, just sailed in from the middle of the ocean, if you need that for your records." "Yes sir, thank you very much," exclaimed the official, making a quick note of it. "And that'll be 7 DBs in tax for docking, if you please sir," he looked up from his pad of papers. Captain Whiffo stared at him until his eyes almost popped out of their sockets. "Taxes! Tax, in an Eslandolan colony! What are the Brick Seas coming to - have I been at sea so long? I never thought I'd live to see the day...!" "Right, 7 DBs sir," remarked the officer, with a grin, taking a half-step back. It was Captain Whiffo's turn to smile. He leaned toward him and extended his hook... ...And the official, losing his balance, tumbled off the docks. And off... Into the water... Captain Whiffo leaned over with a wide smile. "That'll be 7 DBs for docking sir, if you please!" he exclaimed, "and so there we are equal, my good friend!" -=- -=- -=- "Cap'in-" interrupted the first mate again - "Cap'in, there aren't any port taxes in Elysabethtown." "What?" exclaimed the Captain. "Ah well, must have been some other rascally Maestro port that that happened at then," he grinned. "But to get back to the point..." -=- -=- -=- "Actually, that pretty much was the point. And then when all o' the crew had made it up (the official hadn't yet - "He wasn't there!" interrupted the first mate...), had made it up," the Captain repeated, "I headed off to buy the inn and warehouse where we'd landed for the ETWC to commemorate the event. But after that..." "That was when things really started happening..." But sadly, I'm afraid that'll have to wait until next time A few more pics (hoping y'all haven't got tired of them yet ) sans minifigs: The dock: The street: And the citizens of Elysabethtown: Well, it's been way too long since I've last posted something here, and it's been like forever since I last built for this storyline! Hopefully I'll be getting better on both those points in the next couple of months though! This build has been a long time in the works, and I had a lot of fun with it - got to use a bunch of my old grey on the warehouse too! - hope y'all enjoyed it and the story as well! The buildings were based off these two inspiration pics, though both ended up getting modified to a decent degree (and I personally think my in looks better than the other one, but anyways ) More to come from Captain Whiffo soon, Lord willing! Thanks for viewing, C&C welcome as always! Check it out!
  7. Eslandola’s settlement of Fuerte Unido continues to grow. A windmill to grind grain into flour is now operational, and the miller is already busy. The windmill uses a tower mill design. The top rotates to position the wings so they face into the wind. That means coming out the door can be dangerous for the miller at times, and the wagon driver needs to be careful about where he parks his wagon. Here the miller’s helper loads sacks of flour onto the delivery wagon. Meanwhile, the neighbor’s sheep graze in the grass, watched by the neighbor’s boy. Some more pics: A medium factory for Fuerte Unido (and, yes, another windmill from me) and more fun with printed panels. All C&C welcome.
  8. As the settlement of Fuerte Unido remains successful and civilized, the populous settlement is just finishing laying it's last coat of paint down for it's newest primary school, "Nautical One." The bottom floor windows and backside top window are from the Lego Italian Minitalia series, and I got tons of enjoyment working with them! Hope you enjoyed the build! Here are a few more playfeatures/photos for anyone interested:
  9. The captain walked the gun deck, checking on the progress of the crew. Cannons were still be lowered from the weather deck and positioned. "Make sure all carriages are properly secured," he reminded them. "And properly equipped! Shells and water buckets should be in place." The deck bustled with activity as the cramped confines of the ship-of-the-line's gun deck filled. La Comete III, sistership to La Comete, and Deuxieme Comete after that, would be ready to sail this month. --- A small build for the purpose of sistershipping La Comete again. Here's a look at the full build: All C&C welcome.
  10. Settlement Name: Interlagos Ownership: Eslandola Location: Maldria Mayor: Pip Janszen - @Capt Wolf Size: Town Who can own property in Interlagos: Anyone, from any faction. Who can freebuild in Interlagos: Anyone, from any faction. Fortifications: One large fort. Troops: As of Nov. 2, 619, there are 30 men stationed here, all part of Janszen's expedition. Island description: One of the largest islands discovered by Madrician explorers so far, the northern coast of this island has a more temperate climate likely influenced by weather of the great northern sea. The mountain range that forms an east-west spine along the island contains the highest mountains yet seen in the new world, the peaks of which are covered in an almost permanent mist. This range shelters the southern portion of the island from the moderating effects of the northern winds and a more tropical climate prevails here. Several native tribes inhabit the island, and their relations with each other shift periodically, like rival siblings. They have been quick to trade with the new settlers, but the natives are protective of their lands. More about the native tribes of Maldria can be found here. Rumors: It is rumored that an ancient civilization once worked numerous rich gold mines on this island and that these mines could be reactivated with minimal effort. The peaks of the mountains in the central part of the island are said to be covered in snow where unusual creatures live such as a "snow jaguar." Please post a link to any free-builds that take place in Interlagos in this thread. Island map: Location of Interlagos: Properties: - Fort Janszen (large fort) - Brickmaker (medium factory) - Blacksmith (medium artisan) - Sawmill (medium factory) - Mess hall / tavern (medium artisan) - Warehouses (medium commerce) - Two houses (medium residence) - Church (small art & culture)
  11. After months of exploring islands in the New Haven Sea, Eslandola’s expedition finally set foot on the island of Maldria. Initial exploration had identified a prime location for a settlement on the north side of the island, and preparations for a base for further exploration of the island were begun. Now, after much hard work by the ship crews and troops that made up the human capital of the expedition, a permanent base was established. Even though the fort was done, work crews continued on other tasks, as a dock and other infrastructure was needed for the new settlement. Ship gun crews and troop leaders worked to make sure the fort’s armament was ready. Outside the fort, musketeers patrolled the perimeter, as the island was still a great unknown. Inside the fort, expedition leader Philip “Pip” Janszen discussed matters with somewhat-renowned explorer Thaddeus Calvo. Pip’s protestations aside, Calvo informed Pip that the men had already named the fort after their expedition leader. It was Fort Janszen. He was stuck with it. ---------------------- This is a part of my ongoing AMRCA exploring the New Haven Sea, but I’ve posted it separately for licensing purposes. All C&C welcome.
  12. If the new Eslandolan settlement of Interlagos was going to grow, it needed a means of construction. The clay of the river banks and lake bed was well-suited for making bricks, so ballast bricks were taken from the expedition's ships to build a kiln. The clay from the river bank was set into wooden molds, then deposited on beds of sand for drying. Once thoroughly dry, the clay bricks were baked in the kiln for a week. The fire had to be tended constantly. Once cooled, the bricks were stacked and sorted, as some might be under-fired and other might be over-fired clinkers. Thus the settlement’s first industry was established: a brick-making factory. Now brick buildings in Interlagos can be built easily. ----------- A horribly over-simplified explanation and depiction of brick-making in colonial times, with some steps omitted for ease of building the MOC, but I am happy with how it turned out. All C&C welcome.
  13. The cavalry trainees are on the obstacle course, leading their charges over the low rail and practicing their cutlass skills by slicing pineapples. A small build for licensing a battalion of cavalry in Weelond.
  14. Settlement Name: Chiquita Ownership: MCTC Location: New Haven Sea, Island #1 Mayor: TBD Size: Hamlet Who can own property in Chiquita: Anyone, from any faction. Who can freebuild in Chiquita: Anyone, from any faction. Fortifications: none. Troops: As of Nov. 5, 619, one company (30 men) of MCTC troops. Please post a link to any free-builds that take place in Chiquita in this thread. Island map:
  15. While one half of Eslandola's New Haven Sea expedition was establishing a base on Maldria, the other half of the expedition has returned to island #1 to establish a trading post. The trading post is the first property in the new settlement of Chiquita. It will serve as a focal point for harvesting bananas and breadfruit, and for continuing to develop the friendly relationship with the island's blind, tree-dwelling natives. Wait, what was that? Did you see something? Never mind. There's nothing here. The settlers might need some time to adjust to how the natives get around. ----- This MOC first appeared in my AMRCA thread, but I re-posted it here for licensing purposes, and it also allowed me to include more pictures. All C&C welcome.
  16. Word skittered through Fuerte Unido that an adventure opportunity was on hand. Willem Guilder, director of the Merchants Colonial Trading Company, had been meeting with two ship captains that had reportedly returned from the New Haven Sea. Now the call had gone out for volunteers to join the MCTC militia as an expedition was forming. Militias tend to get a bad reputation for being of lesser quality than faction troops. As fighting men, the Eslandian militias can stand with anyone. But, if you're looking for rows of men in gleaming green uniforms marching in unison through the town square, then you've come to the wrong place. The men that assembled on the quay, ready to embark on adventure, were an unorganized assortment. Some were experienced veterans, others were new recruits; some wore helmets, others wore hats; some had full gear, some had barely a musket; some focused on the task at hand, while others were more concerned with the lovely ladies of Fuerte Unido. Sergeant de la Rosa was amazed that one of his new recruits didn't fall backwards into the bay! But he finally got their attention and somewhat organized. He would have his work cut out for him. when they reached their destination. A couple more views of the scene: -------------- OOC: A small (and quick) build for the purpose of raising a company of troops in Fuerte Unido, destined for a new settlement in the New Haven Sea. All C&C welcome.
  17. Naval cadets get more than classroom training. The boat house shelters several small craft that the cadets use for training purposes. Here a couple of cadets bring one of the boats out into the harbor. Teams of cadets compete against each other as they learn to maneuver their craft. The instructors fear they have much to teach the cadets. Once the cadets have mastered the small boats, they can graduate to slightly larger craft that require more skill. Some more views of the build: For the rest of Eslandola's Royal Naval Academy, Part I: Main Campus is here and Part II: Wading Pool is here. All C&C welcome.
  18. *The "Cookie" in this story is no relation to Captain Cookie of @Captain Braunsfeld fame. My apologies for any confusion. -------------- The sailors and soldiers in Captain Janszen's expedition to the New Haven Sea had now spent weeks on Maldria as they built up Eslandola's initial settlement on the island. Up until now their building efforts had focused on foundational needs: fortifications, followed by a brick kiln, a blacksmith's forge, and a sawmill. It was time to establish some basic facilities for the men who were working here every day. And so, rather than assemble by open campfires or return to the ship galleys for meals, Janszen order the construction of a mess hall. Built from locally produced bricks and freshly cut timber, it was more refined than the previous open-air or log structures erected so far. The men quickly took pride in the new facility. Fish and fowl were plentiful on the island, providing far better meals than when they were at sea. When several barrels of grog were also moved from the ships to the mess hall, the men were soon treating it as a tavern, assembling there whenever they weren't working or sleeping. Various ship cooks took turns manning the cooking fires, but one known as "Cookie" was the men's favorite, and soon the mess hall was referred to as "Cookie's Place". The men loved Cookie, but Cookie wouldn't take any guff. When one soldier complained loudly to his sergeant that there was a funny smell to the food one day, Cookie threatened him with his cleaver! As it turns out, perhaps it wasn't the food that was the problem. --------------- This build was based on a simple drawing of a colonial structure I came across in a book, and it seemed like it could serve the purpose of a mess hall for the troops. All C&C welcome.
  19. In light of the recent news of Eslandola’s disastrous encounter with the Sea Rats (see the latest issue of the KPA ), the timing couldn’t be better for Eslandola’s Continental Council to announce the opening of a Royal Naval Academy on Salida Este. The building shown here contains both administrative offices and classrooms. High-ranking officials are on hand to tour the campus. Eslandola’s colors fly from the mast in the center of the quad. In addition to classroom studies, new cadets engage in physical training. Rear admiral Guzman inspects one of the cannons on display, longing for the smell of gunpowder mixed with sea air... A view from above: Part II: Wading pool Part III: Boat house All C&C welcome.
  20. Eslandola's settlement on Maldria was growing, especially with the new brickmaker's kiln. But the men were getting tired of cutting all the lumber by hand, so they dammed off a stream so they could build a waterwheel to power a sawmill. The undershot waterwheel powers a saw to cut logs into planks. Some of the soldiers also discovered that the pond created by the small dam was a good fishing spot. The central part of the mill was built with field stones to support the waterwheel, but the storage shed was built of log construction. With both bricks and sawn lumber, more construction would be possible for the settlement of Interlagos. --- This build started out as an experiment with the roof joint, that failed miserably, as the above photo shows. The angle of the joint didn't neatly fit the angle of any wedge plates, and ultimately there's far too much of a gap, so selective photo angles were necessary. Also, only after I had started to disassemble the build did I realize it would have looked much better if I had tiled the upper part of the pond rather than using loose 1x1 round plates. Oh well, live and learn. Still, I was happy with the stone wall, and I got my first experience trying to build a small waterfall. Also, I didn't do an interior for this build. The roof supports didn't really allow for it, and I have done a sawmill interior before. I will try to get back to showing interiors on future builds. All C&C welcome.
  21. As Salida Este continues to grow, the Eslandolan colonists recognize that the success of this settlement is due in large part to the combined efforts of the Halosians and the native islanders. The MCTC has strived to make sure they work with the natives to benefit all. As the MCTC has developed the island’s resources, using the island’s indigo plants to create dyes used in manufacturing textiles, native customs have been respected and the islanders, who were quick to pick up the mercantile ways of the newcomers, have acclimated themselves to Eslandian society and find themselves in roles throughout the booming economy. To show their respect for the native inhabitants of Ferro Azure, the MCTC has commissioned a statue of Sallah, a revered native leader from a century ago, and placed it atop a fountain. The fountain is located at something of a crossroads, a plaza shaded by trees, and people from all walks of life in Salida Este walk by it every day, whether for business or pleasure. Watching the people who pass by, one can see people from all parts of society in Salida Este. Here a couple of merchants—one native, one Eslandian—discuss a potential deal. An Eslandolan soldier in typical local attire slowly passes by atop his horse. An older native couple, both involved in management of the local textile factory, are out for a walk… …while a young native girl and Eslandolan boy share a special moment. A local artisan uses the fountain to explain to his son how a water pump works… …while his cat eyes a possible feast. Here’s another look at the full build: To be licensed as an art & culture property in Salida Este. I got the idea for this fountain a couple of months ago when I stumbled across the blue animal horns on bricklink, and I knew exactly how I wanted to use them. Sallah was originally going to be a merrynight figure, but I didn't get the build done in time for that storyline. All C&C welcome.
  22. Eslandola’s new settlement on Maldria continues to work toward self-sufficiency. With the brick-making factory established, the new bricks could be used to build the forge for a blacksmith. The quartermaster from one of the expedition’s ships discusses what they need. Workers take a wagon wheel around to the side of the shop. The blacksmith at his workbench. Working on a sword in the forge and at the anvil. ------- A blacksmith for the Eslandolan settlement of Interlagos on Maldria. All C&C welcome.
  23. Thaddeus Calvo, the Eslandian adventurer somewhat well known in certain social circles, had extensively explored the island of Maldria for the previous six months. He encountered several similar but independent native tribes inhabiting different regions of the island, and discovered that they were familiar with trading with outsiders, as they traded with the Tyree'De, a non-Halosian people from an unknown land to the south. These discoveries led Eslandolan officials to believe that another settlement on the island of Maldria was needed. The tribes that would trade at the town of Interlagos on the north coast did not appear to travel extensively to the southern coast. A fertile river valley on the southwest portion of the island was a perfect location for another settlement: accessible overland from Interlagos via a pass in the hills that formed the spine of the island, land suitable for farming, rivers that would provide access to the island's interior, and a natural sheltered harbor for sea-going vessels. So Calvo set out from Interlagos again, this time with a crew of men to build a trading post on one of the southwestern rivers. Calvo and his men found a suitable spot at the mouth of one of the rivers. Sandy beach, but with rocky outcroppings suitable as a foundation for permanent structures. First they built a dock to receive ships large and small. Next they built a small structure that would serve as both a warehouse and office. Finally they built a watch tower to serve not only as a lookout, but as a landmark for traders on both land and sea to see from a distance. It didn't take long before scouts from one of the local native tribes came to check out what the Eslandians were doing. And so the trading post of Punto Sur was established. Maps: --------------------------- The main elements of this build were inspired by the classic Imperial Trading Post set: small rectangular building, tower, dock, and crane. I hope you like my take on that classic. The last two pics were taken at a different time than the first three, and so the light was different and for some reason they have a pink cast I couldn't edit out. All C&C welcome.
  24. Bringing the Brickall back to life After leaving the Colonial Council with Basil de Eslandola, Lady Condora headed towards the MAESTRO Shipwright Bureau (MSB) to bring a ship to a new life under the banner of the MAESTRO company. It was logical, after the loss of the Frigate The Brickwall, the company would like to hire a new frigate and a new crew to manoeuver it. So Basil sent a recruiting agent to search for new crew members. And Lady Condora had to deal the price of the old Frigate waiting to be repaired and renamed. She entered the Bureau with a quite good amount of Doubloons and it seemed it was larger than enough to get back a new frigate that would be named The Brickwall II. Here is a little build just to sistership my lost frigate. Here are some bonus pics : Hope you'll like it ! Lady Condora will be back soon for the continuation of her story...
