  1. Very suitable build for the early stages of the settlement! Regarding your question, small plates are always great to increase the level of detail. I usually think that "all studs should have been considered" which means that large areas of "empty plate" will get some detailing or topology to break up that area. Typically I will avoid any area larger than 3x3-4x4 of "empty plate". Bare baseplate like your water is also a signal of lower level of detail imho, for example some more transparent pieces (like what you did around the net) does a lot to make the water more "alive".
  2. Thanks! Thank you Yea, the shadows might have turned out a bit too dark. Next time I'll try to balance the flashes a bit more (that is, turn down the flash from above and increase the ISO instead) Not at all, as my challenge II B entry will show if I get it photographed tonight A few hundred, got them in the last LUGBULK Got them primarily to reinforce tree canopies, together with reddish brown carrot tops which I got in the same bulk. Thank you! It usually takes challenges for me to get around to build something, and then I try to make some kind of interpretation out of that. For the build itself I usually have a camera angle in mind already when laying out the build so I try to not make parts of the build obstruct others too much. Thank you!
  3. Thanks! Hard to keep up with the "turn-cloaking"? It's not Ulandus their changing sides from at least! Thanks! It was nice to get some use for all my tan camels for a change, I usually only use the dark tan ones since the rest of the builds tend to be more tan and I like to have some contrast between the figs etc and the surroundings. Thank you! Yes, I would have preferred an irregular base too but the time constraints (I thought I had before Ska extended the challenge deadline) made it more reasonable to use eight 16x16 plates than dozens of smaller wedge plates etc... Thank you very much! I have no idea what the Desert King has in mind, but one think he can be sure of is if he thinks of sending these on some low-reward but high-risk mission they will not stay loyal for long Thank you! Yes, I tried to make his camel stand out a bit more but those attempts did not turn out well enough. So he had to contend with a slightly different colored saddle As I wrote above, I stayed away from dk tan camels because I prefer to have some contrast between them and the ground.
  4. Excellent build overall which feels very historically correct! I especially love the design of the earthworks (It was something like this I originally had in mind for my Ch2A entry as well before it...well, grew)
  5. Argh! For a different reason, I hurried to finish an entry here at the expense of not having time to do Ch2B in BoBS :P
  6. That's a really good fallen tree! Excellent minifig posing as well
  7. [OL-Ch2A] Fort in Astrapi, Île de Zeus | Gideon | Oleon [OL-Ch2B] Victory on Île de Zeus | Gideon | Oleon
  8. Fort in Astrapi, Île de Zeus This is my entry for Challenge II - Defending Yer Claims, category A. On Île de Zeus, which has recently been incorporated into the empire of Oleon, Oleander military engineers have been busy erecting defensive structures. They are designed to be suitable both against any hostile natives and to defend the island from other nations if the political tensions should turn into open war. This small fort is built using resources which can be found in great abundance on the island, namely wood and sand. The slope of the walls increase their effective cross-section to provide additional protection of the rooms inside and the sand provides excellent ballistic protection (compare with modern-day sand bags). The fort is of course not built to withstand a prolonged siege, but it’s heavy cannons and high elevation should be able to put up a good resistance against any of the smaller vessels still predominant in the waters of New Terra. The three cannons can be directed in all directions from the fort, and a soldier in the high lookout tower can spot approaching ships better than lookouts on higher ground on the island, since the peaks are most often shrouded in clouds while the land closer to the beaches is more likely to have good sight of the seas. A lot of weird angles in this build and quite a few iterations to get things the way I wanted, but I'm fairly happy with the end result. The gate is on the other side if someone wonders, but in the rush to complete this it didn’t turn out well enough to merit a picture... I tried a new black background for this photo session, which I think worked ok except for that the contrast to the black roof wasn't very good... I also tried some different lighting with another flash from above, to simulate sunlight. What do you think of that?
  9. Gideon is visiting a prospecting effort lead by the famous Oleander geologist Hugo d'Argent, on the newly discovered Ìle de Zeus. The gentlemen are of course letting someone else do the hard work.
  10. It's been nice to see this coming together and the final result is lovely I hope I get to see it live at some exhibition in the future...?
  11. This is my entry to the Desert King's Nocturnus Crusade mini-challenge Changing Allegiance (again) The notorious mercenary company "The Arkbri Falcons", under the command of Ediz Falconi, were fighting for the High Council during the Kaliphlin Civil War. They have however decided that at the moment joining the forces of the Desert King presents the most likely prospect for hoards of gold at a moderate risk. Mounted on camels, the Arkbri Falcons are now following one of Kaliphlin's ancient paved roads on their way to Sultan's Gate. They will meet up with forces from all over Kaliphlin to support the Desert King in his crusade to return Nocturnus to it's rightful rulers. Falconi leading his troops.
  12. Very nice build overall, and I love that arch! Can't wait to see more sections!
  13. Great build overall with some very nice details! That's a very fitting troll for Nocturnus, and good idea having him drag those Avalonians! I like the leaves in the wall as well
  14. Nice minifig posing! The flickr links point to the public adresses of your pics, and as the pics are not public I can't view them. You need to change the links to guest passes or make the pictures public if you want us to be able to see them.
  15. It's probably easier to achieve a natural look using photo technique than in post production. I can see from the exif data on flickr that you had your camera fairly zoomed out when you took the shot, if you zoom in as much as possible you will get a shorter depth of field to play with Moving the background further back (a gap between them which is obscured by things in the foreground works great) to make it blurrier then works also. Just make sure to nail the focus then on the subject you want to emphasize
  16. Yes, but they have generally been regarded more like legends than established GoH canon as far as I've understood? I assume however that it for example would be possible to claim some connection to those "non-canon" lands in a character backstory
  17. Excellent ship and nice landscaping as well! That water must have taken ages to render?
  18. As long as the information on the wiki reflects what ghe builders have written here on EB I think that effort is highly appreciated
  19. With that as the reference and as his name really was Nabulione Buonaparte (he was a Corsican), would that mean that Oleon should be pronounced Ulione (almost in Italian)?
  20. Very nice look of a temporary field fortification Interesting lighting, the first shots almost look rendered but the custom flag definitely is a telltale sign it's not LDD
  21. Great build overall and some stellar photography! Did you do the figure in the vial in post-processing or is it clever use of the optical quantities of the vial itself?
  22. How do you guys pronounce 'Oleon'? I prononuce it in a French way [ɔlɔ̃] (or alternative way of writing it [òlô]).
  23. Excellent build and photography, I think we are seeing you develop your skills rapidly here! The modularity creates a great sense of "I can't wait to see more of this!" Nitpicks are that I think the ground has a too distinct pattern and that you have cropped your photos a tad too much cutting a few corners out.
  24. Very nice cart! Good use of the cotton technique as well, I have no problems with that a suitable technique like that is more or less standard now
