I am currently basing a lot of my mocs on official LEGO sets from my youth. This is on the list for a future rendition of my own. I recently did Forestman River Fortress, so I need to get pictures of that up. But I have wanted to do this set also. It is interesting how so many people can have the same source material and make it differently in the end. Keep up the good work.

LEGO Dimensions Physical Brick Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to Transparency for Effect's topic in LEGO Licensed
They look great, but why is Spike so tall?? That seems odd. He was a bit bigger than tiny Gizmo, but regular legs seem a bit tall. Oh well, I'll still pick them all up!- 527 replies

You usually come up with interesting piece usages. I wonder if maybe the front would work with a 1x2 curved slope instead of just a 1x2 tile? I don't know if the 1x2 baby slopes come in red-brown, but it might flow a bit better there. I don't particularly care for the cheese slope on the back, but the rest seems to work pretty well for scaling purposes. Technically the horse body may be a bit small compared to a "real" centaur, but for LEGO, this works.

Very well done. I like the colors used. The design works really well. I think the arches might be a tad too much, but then again, it works pretty well here. The interiors are crammed, but they work for the setting. I have been wanting to do a building with that color scheme for a while thanks to Big Bang Theory set, but I hadn't considered a hospital. I think I will wait a bit to see if LEGO releases their own version before I build my own, but this is a great addition to the street. I may have to borrow some ideas here and there if I ever create my own.

Nicely done. The build looks great. I wouldn't choose pink either, but we need more Pink in our modular street, so I'll accept it. The interior is splendid. A lot of details crammed in there. I've had many issues with LEGO color consistency AND cheese slopes/arches cracking. They have also told me there is nothing they can do about it. Maybe one day they will figure it out (but not anytime soon since they are making too much money, no reason to change). Do you have all of your buildings still built? It'd be neat to see a street with them. Our LUG shows went to MOC only, so modulars are only MOC, no officials. I need to start working on more MOCs of them. I like tweaking officials into something else.

Very well done! The scale is much better. I love the Lone Ranger set for what it is, but for a layout, this is perfect. I'll be honest, I don't know a ton about Wild Western era history, butt this looks great. I wouldn't mind doing something similar, but I know it is so far down the list that I'll never get around to it. Keep up the good work!

As much as I'd love a mini Hogwarts (different from the polybag that was released), too bad Voldy didn't come with a mini Basilisk or Nagini. That'd be fun.

These are incredible! It is unfortunate that you have to use Photoshop for some of the effects since I'd love to have ALL of these built on display on my shelves in my LEGO room! Granted, I know some of these neat techniques are really fragile also. After seeing Marcel's and these, it definitely would inspire me to create my own from the movies, but I don't know how to do any editing and I like it in real brick, so it would be a bit tricky for me to follow suit (and make anything half as impressive as these) Keep up the good work!

I like the Teen Titans Go cartoon. But that Raven shouldn't be smiling. The rest of her looks good. Also Beast Boy looks good too. Very fitting for the show. It is too bad that they won't blend in with the Jokerland figures though (which I still need to pick up). I had no interesting in it originally until I watched the cartoon when my daughter was in the hospital and enjoyed it. She liked it too, so I guess I need to get 2 of each? Grr! As for the others, definitely excited for many of these Licensed properties. B.A. Baracus, Goonies, Gremlins, ET, TTG,...I'm sure there are others!

If it is a large model, on display to the public, then it should definitely have glue. As much as I hate to say that word involving LEGO. But clearly the master builders and people at LEGOLAND glue their models for a reason. With that said, it is unfortunate, unless it was a publicity stunt, which then I guess it worked? I don't know. I didn't read the article and didn't know anything of this until coming to this forum.

Marvel Superheroes 2016 Rumors And Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to Quicksilver's topic in LEGO Licensed
^I was surprised at how well they got Nic Cage's likeness.. -
Very clever ideas sprinkled about. I like the timbered look and the dark red roof and the shape of the building with the front slope and side slope. I'm not sure on the large variety in front texture, but I like the color combination. And I'm a little unsure on the 6 wide arch next to the 4 wide arch on the main level. I like symmetry, but something feels off about the range there. One would think 2 of the same width arch, but I know it wouldn't work with that type of window there and then you'd have to fill in the gap with something else, granted it could be 1x2 tiles like you did in the center, but flanking each side. Either way, well done. I hate to nitpick. Good work.

Lavender stalks - historic mocs/landscaping
TheLegoDr replied to Andrzej777's topic in General LEGO Discussion
No worries. I'm sure there are plenty of people that didn't know about these and I'm sure there are plenty of pieces I am unaware of that have been in existence for many years. I'd say it's always a good idea to buy a little bit of some pieces if you are curious to see what you can come up with. Remember, purples and pinks (and other pastels) aren't necessarily girl colors. No reason to be insecure! :) -
Lavender stalks - historic mocs/landscaping
TheLegoDr replied to Andrzej777's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Interesting that you are bringing this up now considering they came in a set that came out 5 months ago. Although, I think there could be a good use for them in the right setting. I'm actually more excited about the olive green version for my builds. But lavender certainly might work depending on the feel of the MOC. -
Lego Chess Set (mod of the 853373 set)
TheLegoDr replied to PeroTheLegoman's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Very well done. I don't have any chess sets, but this looks like the way it should have been done to begin with! I understand lego is about the studs, but I think tiles with larger base builds OR a 2x2 jumper tile with surrounding tiles would be ideal! I had considered building a LOTR chess set originally, but someone in my LUG already did it, so I don't want to come off as copying them. But I like how you did this. I may have to look at this for inspiration if I ever get around to doing another Chess set. Other option was Wizard chess from HP. Either way, I like how traditional this looks and the color schemes used. Very fitting for the Kingdoms line. -
Brilliant! I'd gladly take this as a MOC to showcase on my shelf. Naturally an interior would be great for play value, but even as it stands, it looks great. I think I may have to borrow some ideas from this to make my own for my daughter/LUG shows. I think I could copy the Winter Village Cottage feel a bit with the open back. Plus I already switched that to tan, so I'd only have to tweak bits and pieces...I hadn't thought of it before. Kudos!

I have every classic castle set starting in late 80s-mid 90s, but I guess I am unaware of new yellow or new red. Obviously I know the grays won't match, but other than some issues with printing white on red, why would the red be different? i must have missed something with my new sets. Either way, I'll gladly take this set. I don't think LEGO are trying to give people more updates for their past sets, but more so give a nod to the nostalgia of that era. Clearly, the colors may be updated or details may be added in. The main thing that could save this from people having to "sort" it from the rest of their collection is if they included some back printing, even if it is subtle. Granted, I do agree, I would be very upset if I received a classic set and had the new soldiers sprinkled in (granted, I highly doubt that would happen anyway since it isn't a cheap promotion to acquire a lot of them).
-
As far as I'm concerned, the Pirate one having nothing classic about it was a waste of a set. The spaceman being ALL classic, would be a good one to get. THIS, on the other hand, is THE set. I'd love multiples, but I'll just buy used versions of the original since they will be cheaper.

Just another WatchTower... Or isnt't it?! ;)
TheLegoDr replied to Moyalmas's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
My concern is, how can they effectively joust with no room for the horse to gain speed? Perhaps an American Gladiator style? -
Nice shaping overall. Nothing too extravagant, but you don't always need to. Overall this has some good structure to it. It would probably do well at a LUG show so people can see all the little details. Adding in some figures might make the scene a bit better though, so keep that in mind.

Keep in mind with offsetting the windows back a half-step with jumper plates, the window arch won't line up with the window top now. So you'd need to make it offset a full brick deep to justify that change. As for the look, I think the gold bullion looks better since it already creates depth. do you actually have that many of the bullion piece? Or are you taking it from the Brick Bank? You mentioned trying to do it from your own supply, is the reason I ask. As for Market Street, I've seen a few people in this very topic show pictures of the fence piece instead of the hose set up. It seems to work okay, but it depends on how you line it up. If you just use the one (like Town Hall), then it might work just fine for shaping. If you use two, then it becomes a bid deeper than you may want. But it would make it more round out front, so depends on the look you are going for.

What would you like for the next Castle line?
TheLegoDr replied to Robert8's topic in LEGO Historic Themes
Robin Hoo-d... As in Robin Who-d...not a good joke, I know. Anyway, I'd love new Forestmen related sets. I was in the dark ages when Fantasy Era came out, so I don't need another one of those. I like having humans fight humans, but it seems this last theme was too similar to Kingdoms and I liked Kingdoms so much more (colors, sets, figure prints)... But I love classic castle, so I'd love something going back to that. Wolfpack, Forestmen, Crusaders, Black Knights, Black Falcons...so glorious. -
Exactly. They can sprinkle in more classic designs in CMF to appease us fans, and then add in other variety instead of doing a full theme. I'm sure in the long run it is cheaper/easier for them and guarantees sales. A theme worth of sets isn't guaranteed...I enjoyed Western as a kid, but as an adult, as good as the Lone Ranger sets were, I don't know if I would get that into a Western theme. Plus, Western genre is pretty dead anymore unfortunately.

I had no interest in building this set, but I saw the wheels on ebay last year and picked up 6 or 8 of them for 11$ shipped!. I had a different project in mind, so thought that was a good price. Looking at bricklink prices for them individually...yikes!

I love the roof technique. It would do well for my Engine 23 Firehouse. I just went with black slopes instead to take it easy on myself, but this would work well. Very clever!
