[MOC] Azari's garden and cottage
TheLegoDr replied to Marishka's topic in LEGO Action and Adventure Themes
I've been inspired by some of these Elves builds. My daughter saw them and now I have to build them. It should be a nice change from usual builds, only I don't have a lot of purple leaves, so I will need to look into that. But these have a definitely Elves look and I struggle with maintaining that. But you builders do a great job! -
The LEGO Batman Movie Set/CMF Rumors & Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to Sir Gareth's topic in LEGO Licensed
The negative of removing the print, does that mean they removed Batgirl's print also for the belt? Because with her being OVERly printed, it would be a shame to remove something important like that. I much prefer printed torsos for accessories like that and then also include the belt for other customized reasons. -
Brilliant! I really like the Cyberman, even though I know nothing of Dr Who other than the Dimensions figure. But that really looks great for a robot in general. I should look into my own version of it. I also really like the Hulkbuster armor. I don't particularly like the gold thigh pieces, since it should be red with gold accents, but the scale and shaping is well done. I should also look into modifying my own. I would definitely look at yours for inspiration. I'm not a huge Spider-man fan, but the Doc Ock mech works really well and seems much more threatening than the normal arms and pincers he usually has.

It definitely resembles the movie version. I have been wanting to build one for myself for quite some time, but too many other projects get in the way. This looks promising. I would tinker with it and change a few things.. Keep up the good work.

The LEGO Batman Movie Set/CMF Rumors & Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to Sir Gareth's topic in LEGO Licensed
Maybe the prices are so high so they can discount them later??? (wishful thinking) So far the two sets look great, but I agree on the too high of prices. I guess I will have to wait for sales or weigh my options on other sets next year. Batman is my favorite crimefighter, so these sets will be must have even if the movie is terrible. It is going to be a very expensive year it seems... -
Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
I thought I heard Astrid also helped with some of the Winter Village sets?? I could be wrong though. Either way, there are pros and cons to ALL modulars, so it seems silly to bash just one person. At the very least, dark orange wasn't a very common color (and still isn't 4 years later). So Town Hall at the very least gave some great colors. The design looks great from the front. The only downside, to me, is the height. It is supposed to be an imposing building, but with the 32 width it feels too tall and not wide enough. But I've seen people who extended the Town Hall into wider and that doesn't look good either. There has to be a balance somewhere. -
Pretty incredible. Good angles. Good shaping on benches and walls. It definitely resembles a church I've been into.
-
The shape is quite clever and the steam out of the top is brilliant. Although the tilework is really easy. You just use 2x2 and 1x1 round tiles and intermix them. It does give an interesting effect not usually seen in city scapes. Keep up the good work.

Clever idea. Although I have never seen Cloudy with a Chance, but that would be quite weird. I should make myself some large bricks. I particularly like the 1x4 arch.

The LEGO Batman Movie Set/CMF Rumors & Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to Sir Gareth's topic in LEGO Licensed
Considering the Reggae suit is what Robin puts on, I don't know why they would release another version of it for Batman (even though it was HIS suit). -
^I like the idea of a more Asiatic Pirate group, similar to POTC 3. That could be fun. New prints/sails and whatnot anyway.
-
What am I missing here? How did you make the goggles? That looks really clever. Good tail usage. I had no idea that was in the new Disney castle. That could come in handy for some builds.

Really well done. It definitely looks to be an improvement over the official set. I especially like the interior work. I had considered doing a better interior for 7965, but I never have and seeing things like this, you always want to go bigger/better! Keep up the good work.

It doesn't seem like a lot of the early themes are as popular anymore. Look at castle (they had to go sci-fi), space (only NASA related or Star Wars), and pirates (few and far between). It is clear Star Wars and other Licensed themes are the real moneymaker for LEGO. NInjago is popular and did introduce some neat Pirate related items, but with a ninja/steampunk flair, so not always as useful as they could have been. I actually thought the 2015 line was done really well, although it was almost a carbon copy of the 2009 line, just with new prints and pieces. I didn't buy any of the sets, but I did jump on the chance to get some new bluecoats (even though I prefer the Revolutionary Soldier bluecoat in the CMF line). And new pirate prints which were updated prints of what I grew up with was more than welcome. It had a nice nostalgic feel to the sets, although I still prefer my late 80s/early 90s sets for substance and final aesthetic.

Looks good. The front courtyard/playground area works really well for that type of setting. I guess I don't know how old these girls are supposed to be considering sometimes they have cars, so I wouldn't think they would be out at a recess, but children playing with the MOC would prefer that I'm sure. The tile work with the 4-square and hopscotch is clever and fits in well. I would add in more trees or foliage outside the fence maybe? Instead of just concrete everywhere, but that's just me. My school (in a small town) had tons of foliage/bushes/trees around the line and my daughter's current school is tree lined with bushes intermixed. It definitely breaks up the focal point AND helps with global warming. I would recommend using the Cinderella castle clock maybe if you wanted actual printing on the dish instead of just a white faced clock. The classrooms look good, although I always have to build stairs into builds so they can be "realistic," but I know not every build can accommodate them or builders want to use them. I had considered doing something with the Friends school since I like the color scheme so much, but my daughter got into the Elves sets so I have to build stuff in that style.

It actually does look great. I won't pay $80 for it, but it sounds like plenty of others will. I wonder if it will go the way of a lot of other IDEAS sets and get discounted through other avenues.

[MOC] (WIP) "The Captain's Daughter" Pub and Deluxe Apartm
TheLegoDr replied to Boettner Builds's topic in LEGO Town
Interesting build so far. I had also started a Captain's Daughter pub quite some time ago, but tore it apart for other projects. Maybe I will revisit it one day. I do like the first floor pub facade. The windows help quite a bit there. I think there is a good balance between white/tan on the upper levels, so that works. The grill tiles work well for detailing. I don't love the height, but only because it is too tall for my own city. If it works for your city, then definitely, bigger is better. -
Pretty neat for sure. I think my favorite part are the mini builds. I've only been to an official store a few times, and they are always in malls. So I wouldn't think of a stand alone building encompassing a LEGO store.

Modular Building Sets - Rumours and Discussion
TheLegoDr replied to The Jersey Brick Guy's topic in LEGO Town
So $200 for a normal sized modular? Since the scale has been cut way down from the earlier days of GG, FB, GE, etc. Town hall was bigger so it cost more. Makes sense. I bought it right away. Great color scheme, interesting facade with the pillars and the tower. It happened to be kind of blocky since it was so much taller than the others but the same width. So if they do another large scale modular at the current trend, I don't expect another Town Hall. I expect something more GG size with more tiles and plates on the ground level. Also, I've attempted a Cafe Corner inverted corner. And while it looks neat and different from everyone else's cafe corner, I scrapped it because it didn't fit on my shelf. So if they make an inverted corner set, it may look great and I may still want it, But I won't be able to display it so I'd likely only buy it for pieces, which is unfortunate. -
MOD - Simpsons Kwik-E-Mart to fit modular street
TheLegoDr replied to SeanJFry's topic in LEGO Licensed
Fun. I recently have been working on my own Kwik E Mart modular scale. Mine unfortunately is 22 wide, so it cost a lot of space inside, but I figured I'd use some of those things for a grocery store (green grocer perhaps). And I've also made mine taller. I like the idea of how it looks normally, but I don't like that much variance in roof heights. Definitely have variance, but one story vs a whole bunch of 2-3 story buildings seems off to me. But if it works for your city, go for it.- 5 replies

It is definitely a neat facade. It resembles the actual building very well. The only qualm is all white vs tan. Tan would at least add some contrast. But the details are neat. I especially love the roofing with the 1x1 teeth and the 1x1 plate with clip under the larger plates. And I will agree on the most recent modulars being undersized. Lots of detail, but significantly smaller than the earlier versions.

This was definitely on my to do list. This is incredible. I will definitely look to this for inspiration. I love the dragon curve. All of the neon green at the base looks incredible.

How did you make the knights move? That is a really neat idea. I should look into that for a future show. I've always wanted to build a joust scene and that does add a lot of flair to a convention.

Looking good everyone. Mine are just on multiple shelves exposed to the air...maybe one day I'll get something different, but these shelves were built in when we bought the house, so it works. But that Besta display with the lights is intense. Looks very professional and clean. And you could certainly display any sets behind there like a true collector/displayer... My only qualm, it really shows off how tiny the new modulars are compared to the older versions. Yikes. I knew they were smaller and you see them next to each other and not think of it, but in that photo it is glaringly obvious. Either way, I really like how it looks and I may have to look into doing something similar to my LEGO room.

My daughter will love those DC ladies in minidoll/minifigure form....more money spent on her instead of me..boo hoo As for LEGO Batman movie. Yes, sets will be must haves. Justice League...not sure on how the movie will do since it seems forced/rushed...but I will welcome some good looking figures into my collection.
