That is really really nice.

- SAFETY: most of construction machines are orange, red, yellow or so, for safety reasons. Or at least moving parts are in some bright, visible colour. - SAFETY: outriggers are there because tires are inherently soft contact. Therefore typically for crane (machines that changes its centre of gravity a lot during work) you need to increase stability of the machine by providing "metal to the ground" contact. Usually as wide as possible - that is why outriggers spread out wide (if technically possible). With tracks it is usually not necessary since tracks are not soft and they cannot compress under the load/pressure + plus contact surface is much larger. - SAFETY: simple answer - it is for safety reason. manufacturers usually mark moving parts with those red-white stripes (or outer edges of machinery). It helps to prevent accidents, bumping into something or killing somebody at construction sites.

42043 C-Model - Mobile Crane
J_C replied to M_longer's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
C-models are best models! this one is great. -
Thanks for writing this. Sometimes little reminder about how much difference simple "please, thank you" can make is useful. So, thank you, Jim. I really like this model. Especially colour choice and clever steering.

I think since contests are based on voting, there is no reason to stop him participating. -

Beautiful! -
I have to admit I saw more real life dogs, cats, owls, parrots and other animals made in Creator series than real life dinosaurs I saw, but comparing e.g. Creator dog to real dog and Creator dinosaur to visualization of dinosaurs I saw in the science books, this comparison is more or less equal. I just think 2017 dinosaur Creator set looks terrific and comparing some details it might be lacking from scientific point of view to the dog with no ears is out of any scale wrong comparison and completely missing the point of LEGO.

That is so great. It is cute and funny and brilliant. And I am sure it would be greatly entertaining for playing. Maybe if LEGO make official Technic set with animal/creature theme, kids would go for it (I would ). Thanks for sharing.- 784 replies

[CMODEL] 42042 - FORKLIFT
J_C replied to J_C's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thank you. I have 2 more Cmodels for 42042 in the process (no idea when it might be finished - if - I hope - time is the critical factor for me and rare and expensive "commodity"). I am sort of sad that 42042 might be already discontinued this year, but if my humble c-modeling would convince anybody to buy 42042, I would be happy (mainly for them, because 42042 rocks!). -
[CMODEL] 42042 - FORKLIFT
J_C replied to J_C's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks, I agree. It is harder (but also IMO more rewarding) when you are limited to parts that you have in the set. I like building C-models (mainly as challenge) and many many times I find myself in the situation like: "I wish there would be 4 of these", but there are only 3 and you have to think around it. I like this kind of building. here is seat prototype pic: I was very excited when I figure this one out. I had to redesign it afterwards anyway, because as in the picture it was too bulky and I needed some parts that held it together somewhere else, so I had to change the "fitting". -
Technic 2017 Set Discussion
J_C replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I have same feeling. Retiring of the sets come quickly. Maybe that is a trade-off for new trend of big sets. Sets like BWE,Class would be flagships for sure few years ago and there would be 1 set like that per year introduced. Now we get several per year. But maybe not even 18 months later they will be retired. That would be aggressive strategy for Lego to "sell quickly". -
[CMODEL] 42042 - FORKLIFT
J_C replied to J_C's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks. When I designed bulldozer from 42042 I though I was pressured for space for gearing inside, but it was nothing compare to this. under the "floor" of the cabin, it is packed, packed. -
Hi, after my [CMODEL] 42042 - Bulldozer I decided to publish my next alternative build for 42042 this time it is a FORKLIFT. I only used parts from 42042 except for the string (265cm needed) - I chose light green to make it more visible. Features: 4 motorized functions: - drive (front axle) with differential (made thanks to turntable) - steering (rear axle) (manual HOG steering when steering position on gearbox in neutral is there too) - Ackerman steering - tilting of the mast - lifting of the forks The mast is telescopic. Forks move in 4 segments. Lifting is achieved by system of string and pulleys. Lifting is not the fastest but that is intentional. My goal was to go for "as high as possible" design, instead of "fast" one. Wheels go really well on carpets, blankets. They tend to slip on hard surfaces (tiles), they are made from tracks (42042 has no tires) - it is easy to modify/replace tire wheels (You can do it. I do not want to, I want to keep it as C-Model) Gearbox's levers is easy to access. The gearbox is 4 channels/functions two-way kind. Easy and simple battery change. The battery pack also serves as counterweight. Details: lights, steps, logical position of stickers from 42042 A-model (no altering), seat (made from tracks!), steering wheel, mirrors, levers etc. MOC designed completely digital free way, no computers were used, just old-fashioned building, rebuilding and again, again. I hope you will like it. Please excuse my photos. leftover parts: EDIT: NEW VIDEO: NEW PICTURES: INSTRUCTIONS PREVIEW: LEGO level quality. Step by step, hi res. With all the necessary details, additional pictures, arrows etc. Bill of material, Stickers (not altered from 42042 A-Model), Battery replacement sequence, Function explanation https://rebrickable.com/mocs/J_C/forkliftcmodel42042 (It took me forever to make the instructions - there are 324pages (cover to cover) - 19pages only on threading the string through all the rollers and pulleys) RENDERS: from 3D model I made - ex post - for instruction creation:

Technic 2017 Set Discussion
J_C replied to CM4Sci's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
thing that pulls my eye on the plane is front looks way too fat compare to rest of the plane and wings are tiny tiny. It is a bit like F104 wings on F35body with fat nose. and there are planes that combine functions of flaps and ailerons but then they should move independently which (granted there are only few pictures, so it is premature to judge) does not look like it is the case.
