[WIP] Myzec Throne Room - WIP/Build Log
Ayrlego replied to Ayrlego's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Thanks for all the helpful advice and comments everyone. I have finished the MOC incorporating some of the advice above. I will post the completed shots in their own thread soon, but here is an overview of the build: The completed shots are all-Lego scenes, so the green base plates around the sides didn't end up being needed to be filled with vegetation. As you can see I compromised on the floor, changing it to just the one colour to help blend in with the stairs, but keeping the splinter mosaic pattern. The throne remained as initially posted, @blackdeathgr, they are actually plates not bricks, I just made them bulky to represent the stone overhang as seen in the inspiration pic. Anyway, again thanks for the help! -
Brethren of the Brick Seas (BoBS) Intro Thread, Era II
Ayrlego replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
This is a great question and I think it may have got missed in the flurry of activity in this thread. I was thinking maybe something like a faction tag for all members who made at least one challenge entry in Era 1, similar I think to what GoH did at one stage? -
I love that hull - it's beautiful! A nice little ship all round!

[WIP] Myzec Throne Room - WIP/Build Log
Ayrlego replied to Ayrlego's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Thanks for the detailed feed back all, here is an update from last night (before I saw the majority of these comments!) actually I typed Aztec Queen and she was one of the first hits! I did consider this, it's a good idea. I'm going to try and twist some vines around some of the colomns and see how that looks. If I think it looks like I need more greenery, this will definitely be an option! I think I get what you mean, similar to the SNOT work now, but with the slopes mostly joined with only the small cracks exposed on the sloping edge of the bricks? I like the idea of including cats, but the Lego cat doesn't really allow a seated pose. I'm experimenting with different ways of displaying it but if I can't find one I like I'll probably leave it out... this was my first idea and one that I now may be revisiting! I was going to have a relatively flat floor and use cheese slopes to make som mosaics. I still like the current floor, but now am torn about what to do!!!! exactly what I had in mind when I first saw the inspiration pic! I first tried this: Dodecagon by Péter Ittzés But apart from it requiring a Bricklink order to complete (something I've avoided so far this month! Yep, I'm an addict!) it turned out too big. Hopefully I've achieved a similar stargate style on the smaller scale! Thanks all for the input, keep it coming! Maybe we should have a WIP thread for buildings and landscapes similar to the shipyard thread for shipbuilding??? @Capt Wolf a skill tree sounds awesome! -
So I thought I might try something a bit different - rather than posting a finished MOC and receiving comments on the finished product, I thought I might try a WIP/build log and hopefully get some advice from you guys along the way. Also I thought some people may find a build log interesting? Anyway, I was supposed to whip up a quick build of my sig-fig, Colonel Dirk Allcock leaving Myzectlan. It was supposed to be a quick build for story advancement purposes. I had the idea of him speaking to the leader of the Myzec, High Priestess Zia in a sort of throne room. While looking for some inspiration on the internet, I found this image which almost perfectly depicts what I'd like to build: Problem is I'm not sure I can do it justice and need some help! And here is my starting point: The area is a 20x40 base. The green section at the end will have some background vegetation and I plan on taking the shot front on, no angle. And some progress: On reflection I am not sure about the dark tan additions to the flooring, I am however very happy with the SNOT splinter pattern. I am thinking that I will probably replace the dark tan with a mixture of dark green and olive green to match the columns. Thoughts? Circles are hard! Also the throne - I've experimented with various ways of trying to portray the circle part without any satisfying results, does anyone have any suggestions? The columns will likely extend the same height as the are now up with a flat roof on top in light bley with dark/olive green highlights and maybe some vegetation. The idea is the Myzec like their buildings to 'become one' with the life giving jungle. Any advice/comments/criticism most welcome! EDIT: LINKS TO UPDATES Update One

Thanks Kai! I think we need more science and discovery! Thanks Mesabi, I've never tried sci-fi, maybe one of these ship-tembers I'll give it a go, not this year but! I imagine tiger pelts would fetch a good price, although I hope they are not driven to extinction on Cascadia because of it! Thank you Silentwolf. I was struggling to come up with a third scene, I was going to do a tree for the jaguar but things just went in a different direction! Then the panther tree went through multiple different versions before I settled on that one. The branches are still a bit thin, and it's a pity the panther can really do a lying down pose! Thanks Littleworlds! Thanks Kodan, the colours in that one were difficult to get right as the pictures were a bit dark. When I first saw the tiger and that it was bright orange I wasn't sure about it, but I admit that it has grown on me. Thanks Elos - I owe you to the fact I even have a tiger! After seeing yours I needed one!!! Thank you Capt Wolf, I sure the paper will be well received, although it's brevity will doubtlessly be commented on!

[WTC-Saboteur-Part2] They have found their way
Ayrlego replied to Bodi's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Nice entry Bodi, the fort looks very nice and I like the combination of different coloured masonry bricks as highlights. Lucky those bluecoats made it to Mesabi Landing safely. If the count proves less than hospitable, the Royal garrison will be sure to look after official Oleon visitors! -
Royal Society of Natural Philosophy - General Discussion
Ayrlego replied to Ayrlego's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Yep! We have had very little time to develop the RSNP, but everything remains the same as when we launched except I think @BrickOn is no longer active... It would be good to get some science/exploration type stories happening rather than the constant KMA-based drama... (it's the gift that just keeps giving...) the new adventure MCRA is probably a great time to re-vitalise the society!- 42 replies

Esteemed colleagues of the Royal Society of Natural Philosophy, It has been my privilege to spend the last few months in the majestic city of Myzectlan on the Isle of Cascadia. There is much here to interest the society, and indeed I have been able to devote some of my time to a study of the large feline species for which the island is known. I have attached some sketches with some preliminary notes for your review. I have identified what I believe are three unique species of cat, although I suspect that two are probably the same species, or at least a sub-species. Further study will be required on this point. I will begin with the two cats that I believe are endemic to the region. Firstly, there is the jaguar. This species is similar to the leopard of the old world, although the examples I have sighted appear larger and heavier and their behavioural and habitat characteristics more closely resemble those of the tigers found in the Mokolei Empire. Next is the panther, which like the panthers of the old world I suspect to actually be jaguars born without the distinctive spotted patterns and to have a uniform black coat. Lastly is the rarest but perhaps most interesting of the big cats, the tiger. Larger and more aggressive than the native jaguars and panthers, Myzec legend says this cat is not endemic to the island, but was introduced by traders from the west at the height of the feline cult that was perhaps ultimately responsible for the decline of their civilisation. I strongly suspect the examples I have seen are indeed introduced species, probably introduced from the Mokolei Empire hundreds of years ago. This theory if proven would indicate the Myzec parent civilisation were strong sailors and traders, and that contact between the New World and old pre-dated recent discoveries. ------------------------------------ Full MOCs: I had a heap of BoBS stuff I was meant to build on the weekend, but instead got distracted with something a bit different. I've been wanting to show off my cats, and as Dirk is about to leave Cascadia, decided that if he was ever going to produce a scientific paper, now should probably be the time! Enjoy!

Announcement from the Corrington Era II main thread: "Chaotic, haphazard, piecemeal and plain disordered" stated Brigadier Howe. "All words used to describe the army's current dispositions in Terra Nova. A most un-Corlander state of affairs. It will not stand Captain. We must immediately bring order to the situation." Brigadier Howe and Captain Wolf strode past the assembled guard at one of Arlinsport's large forts. With a polite nod at the guard commander, Brigadier Howe continued "Our first priority shall be to carry out a compete audit of land based military units in the new world. Then we shall review their dispositions and ensure they are best placed to protect and defend our possessions and react to any situation. Each settlement the size of town and above should aim to have their own colonial militia for constabulary duties and immediate protection. Crown units will be dispersed where we judge them most needed. I wish to have two battalion sized forces at central locations ready for a rapid response to emerging threats or situations." "Aye Sir, I have a preliminary list for your review" replied Captain Wolf. "Excellent work. Our second priority will be a review of fortifications throughout our settlements." "Yes Sir. Additionally we have received correspondence from Colonel Allcock in the paradise isles. He is growing concerned over the disappearance of Don Isaac Montoya, who was last seen heading to Tortuga for discussions with the notorious Sea Rat Captain Benjamin Morgan" "Hmm, our nearest sizeable force will be Major Bradley's battalion in Port Woodhouse. Dispatch correspondence to Colonel Allcock and Major Bradley authorising Colonel Allcock's use of the battalion for recovery operations if deemed necessary. I will discuss the deployment of a naval force with Admiral Fletcher. For now I am not too concerned. But we must be ready to act. This is the perfect example of the need to better organise our military forces." With that the two officers went their separate ways to carry out the Queen's business. ------------------------------- A build for the appointment of land commanders for Corrington in Era II, a scene from this MOC was used in the new Corrington Thread. Heavily inspired by @Sebeus I's scene from the Oleon front page (I Need to order some bright light yellow bricks!!!). Placed in Arlinsport but will not be licensed.

A paper submitted to the Royal Society of Natural Philosophy -
Great jungle scene Bregir. I do really like the rope bridge design! The use of the tusks for tree branches is a great idea, although I wonder if there is a way to make the trunk a little less blockly. The dark orange leaves make a nice contrast to the greens. I have an idea forming in my mind for my building schedule this weekend. I think it is time to set aside the two projects I currently have under construction and for Dirk to leave Myzectlan and return to civilisation via Camp Isaac to organise a rescue mission/search party for Montoya.

The uneven dock does look great, and the mixture of the tans and olive green in the bank has worked really well. Colonel Allcock is at them moment still isolated in the ruins of Myzectlan - although that needs to change as he is growing increasingly concerned for the welfare of his good friend Don Isaac Montoya.... I am sure he will really appreciate this gesture. His cousin will no doubt pass them onto scientists of the Royal Society to look after until Allcock returns. Knowing Allcock I'm pretty sure he will ultimately use them or their progeny to erect a monument of friendship between our nations in either Jameston or Port Woodhouse!

Ayrlego replied to Bregir's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Welcome Hart New Bob! Yes, that is perfectly acceptable, although usually they are modified at least a little, but I don't see any issues at all using official sets - you just wouldn't be able to clam a MOC that consisted entirely of official sets as a freebuild I don't think. Pretty sure that as Aussies @Lord Buckethead and I are the only Corries who can get away with 'Mate' without sounding too weird... just sayin' -
Thank you Maxim for a very entertaining challenge! I definitely didn't expect my team to get this far! Congrats to the winning team! My guess is that my sailors were so distracted by the display of such finely chiselled abs they literally dropped the ball in the last game!
-
Also, the settlements of Hussar's Isle and Camp Isaac are missing for Corrington. I've just done a full audit of our settlements and I'm pretty sure these are the last ones! Thanks again.
-
@Phred Can you please also add the settlement of Mesabi Landing, thanks!
-
Great story as always Mesabi! I think you may have missed your calling as a Sea Rat!! I'll keep that in mind....!
-
@Mesabi Can you enter multiple builds per entry? For example, can my entry consist of a number of 16x16 vignettes which tell the story?

Vanilla plantation, Jameston, Celestia.

Ever since Cascadia was first settled by Corrington, the ETTC have had plans to exploit the vanilla that grows with such abundance on the island dubbed by some 'The Vanilla Isle'. Until now, the company has collected wild vanilla beans, however after months of careful research, the first vanilla plantation is beginning to produce the valuable crop. Located in the hinterland of the settlement of Jameston, a tract of land has been carefully cleared for the project. With the assistance of botanists from the Royal Society, it was found that the vanilla plant, an epiphyte that normally grows in the branches of trees in the Cascadian rainforest, can be carefully transplanted onto stakes for commercial production. Detail of the vanilla plant grafted onto a stake.
