  1. I understand why someone would argue for physical instructions and to avoid apps altogether, but this is probably the worst set possible to use for those arguments. It makes sense to require whatever the app is (I'm guessing it's not the LEGO Instructions app) for this particular product, it's a major part of the experience. Kids are on their phones all day anyway, might as well distract them from Fakebook for a while and get them doing something more stimulating like this. Going rogue and doing your own thing is cool in the world of LEGO, but it's not a valid reason to call whatever the app is "stupid". Maybe buy a set for your kid or nephew or something and see how they interact with the product as a whole. I used the LEGO Instructions app for the first time recently to build some Speed Champions vehicles and didn't mind it. It sped up the build process a little not having to deal with a booklet, plus it's one less stack of paper to clutter my desk and storage.
  2. Seeing all the sweet 8 wides posted on here makes me realize I need to shake off the rust and step up my game! Lots of cool stuff in here.
  3. The flower looks more sinister than the actual flytraps haha
  4. I was rolling my eyes thinking this was just going to be a 1x2 tile with a sticker, but I'm glad I was wrong haha. Good job going all out with this, hope it inspires others.
  5. Great theme, I like mechanical builds like this, too bad it's probably not popular enough for a mainstream series, like collectible minifigs.
  6. Do you build the outside or the inside of the ships first? When I make 8-wide cars, I usually make the "shell" of the car first, then I fill the inside of the model with as many details and strength as I can. I don't know if the same can be done for spaceships? Maybe it helps to build the shell in sections then attach it to an internal frame or something?
  7. As much as I love the theme and sleek bodies, the dirty ugly undersides are my favorite part about them haha. When will we see Brick Daddy riding around in one?
  8. I like how everyone who builds these does it a little differently and it always looks cool. I've gotta go back and re-do mine to update with new parts.
  9. For sure, it needs headlight stickers and another black sticker on the nose. I think the rear lights would also look good as a sticker, but I'm glad I went nutty with the details, even if it does make the build unstable as usual haha No idea what the diamond is from, but it's part 35649, a modified tile.
  10. I haven't seen anyone else try to make a Ginetta Akula, I'd like to see how the master builders at LEGO would handle it. I was chuffed that I managed to stumble into a solution for the funky nose and rear. Ginetta Akula by Henchmen4Hire, on Flickr
  11. I think LEGO needs to move their bum and give us another racing video game using designs like this.
  12. I'm gonna need instructions for Hardpan and Meltdown please :) Crab Boat and Stuntplane Astronaut are also wicked cool.
  13. Good stuff, I forget that quick small builds can be more satisfying than bigger ones that stress me out with all the troubleshooting they need haha
  14. VAN DOORS! With all the mega useful new LEGO elements, has anyone tried rigging up new van door mechanisms? One of my favorites is simply using a horizontal panel and sandwiching it between two plates, but sometimes you want something complicated and greebly! I'm a few years behind on LEGO news, so I'm rusty and discovering new parts. Here's a WIP of a van I'm working on, gentle and savage feedback welcome.
  15. *Borat voice* Niiiiiiice! Strap some rockets to it and it makes a cool hover hotrod haha
  16. The Cyclone is my favorite because of the distinct nose. I recently posted a Ginetta Akula, which also has a funky nose, and like the challenge they pose.
  17. What's interesting about that is that sometimes I needed around 100 more pieces per car to make an 8-wide than a 6-wide. When I bricklinked all the parts for my 8-wide cars, the total was roughly $30-$40US per car. I think LEGO is expensive to begin with, but after having built 8-wides, I think getting 2 whole cars at that scale for $50US is a sweet deal. The single 8-wides being only $20US is amazing.
  18. I'm not afraid of the Dentist, I'm afraid of the exorbitant bill that comes from visiting them lol
  19. I think it works, just maybe rotate the quarter-tiles on the sides of the "nose" to close the gap.
  20. I get the impression that's the general sentiment. However, I did buy some of the 6-wide Speed Champions stuff to make them 8-wide (which requires a trip to BrickLink). I think it would be more attractive to fans of 6-wide to buy 8-wide cars to convert, since you need less parts to make the conversion.
  21. I don't know why I saw a droopy old dog face when I first saw this haha Anyway, very cute, in a slashy sort of way.
  22. I miss those old knobs and flippy bits on things, made me feel like I was operating fancy equipment from the future. Now we're here and they're all gone, gah! If I recreated my first TV I'd have to spend the rest of my life being asked "Why is your oven in the living room?" haha
  23. Is this the new place to post Speed Champions MOCs? The switch to 8-wide was the greatest news I ever heard, I think I started building at that size a few years before Speed Champions even existed yet. Though admittedly, the lack of feedback on 8-wide MOCs over the years has made me realize I'm probably the only person who actually likes the scale. Christopher Stamp (SC Lead Designer) says one of the reasons the switch was made was because of constant community feedback "from day one" that the cars were too thin...well, I don't believe that at all. The 6-wide MOCs consistently get tons more attention than anything 8-wide. City fans want cars that fit in their cities, it's understandable. Another reason given for the change is because the new scale facilitates more accurate car designs. I completely agree, that's exactly why I went with 8-wide back then. I think people who are into City scale aren't necessarily into supercars or their hyper detail or authenticity, but more into abstract vehicles that look good enough in their City displays. The hyper details they focus on are in the buildings, not the vehicles. I don't think Speed Champions has even tenuous ties to City anymore, and can probably be considered a Special Theme now. What about you, have you seen a surge of popularity for 8-wide cars since the new scale launched?
  24. I like that the rusty bits under the car look functional, even if they don't do anything...could be the story of my life haha
  25. Sometimes all the pieces seem to fall into place...I wouldn't know, this was another brain-bending build. The interior is mostly hollow for now, and I need to nudge some parts into place, but it's 99% done. I think only a few stickers would be needed; vents on the sloped nose, headlights, and the Ginetta logos. Ginetta Akula by Henchmen4Hire, on Flickr
