  1. No need to change gears - if the gears are changed then there will be a significant loss in torque. Simple fix to this problem - move the blue 3L pin / yellow pin connector / black pin to the next hole over, currently occupied by the black pin that has no second connection - probably what was intended all along. This is seen in step 4 on p. 208. The black pin goes into the blue pin's hole, but projecting out to the other side, to connect to the black beam placed later on the same page.
  2. Looks good so far, really like the track elements around the wheels concept - may need to borrow that. Do the wheels take on water?
  3. Best part is Alfred coming out of the closet in the first picture, no wonder the minifigs from this set are proving so popular . For me, MEH, for my kids, POW! I guess TLG hit the target market again.
  4. I need to teach my kids mechanics and simple machines
  5. Excellent build, not sure how authentic - is it based on a real airboat? Also, how many parts left over?
  6. Tommy - go with the muslin, the vinyl may give you some uncontrolled reflections. The lights may be a little weak and not provide a wide enough coverage, you may want to consider getting four of them. If you place your camera on a tripod, you can get longer exposures without camera shake and not have to worry so much about light intensity. One issue I have is that LEDs are typically not full spectrum, so some colors do not reproduce correctly, which may not be so much of an issue for LEGO.
  7. Actually, if you were intending to have a scene back-light by sunrise/sunset illumination, what you rendered is quite accurate IMHO. IRL, once the sun is below the horizon, the intensity of ambient/fill light is much less than that of the remaining direct light, so not surprising the shadow and dark areas got all blocked up. You can probably increase the intensity of the ambient light, or add another light source to provide some fill (perhaps a street lamp off to the side?)
  8. Since we moved to a town with an IKEA, my 'hobby' budget has gone down, but we now have lots of inexpensive furniture designed by Scandinavians in our house (and most of it is useful, including the one that caused the shoulder injury ). Options for building working areas with stuff from IKEA is almost overwhelming.
  9. Good start - you managed the color mix well, was the use of lime-green panels deliberate or necessary? How about a video?
  10. Cool, perhaps the most clever mechanism yet
  11. Clever, clever, clever - nice packaging - kinda like a Rube Goldberg contraption with no real apparent useful function.
  12. Looks just like the original IDEAS submission - and seems were are getting 3 or 4 orange balls. No clues if the top has extra parts to change the theme, though.
  13. In the two weeks since this topic has been posted, the last of the 42009's have become sold-out from both the on-line and brick/mortar Toys-R-Us stores (at least the ones near me) - coincidence? Maybe. Remaining available on-line inventory, in the US at least, is now approaching prices at a premium from the original list, for new sets, while used are still available, but not as heavily discounted as before. If you are on the fence about this set, I'd suggest getting one now before the mark-ups get out of hand. I finally rationalized buying this, and at a decent price to boot for NISB (not getting the AROCS however).
  14. Epic, very nice crane truck, I like the motor in the boom, but how limited is the crane turn-table rotation due to the wiring? What are all the other functions?
  15. Grey background - you can try "Cowboy Studies" website for photo-grade backgrounds, or local photography/studio supply shops (I have Barndoor Lighting around the corner from me). You can get a roll of background paper for $10-40 - or if you don't mind a bit of texture, the local Hobby Lobby sells roll paper and also fabric. The trick is how to support the paper to make a nice smooth transition from vertical to horizontal - I usually tape one end of the paper to the top of a bookshelf, and then just let it roll out onto the floor.
  16. Save your money for more LEGO your pictures look just fine, as already mentioned.
  17. One reason for no HOG-steering is the Porsche doesn't want it as it is not an accurate detail - there is no HOG IRL, so there must be another steering mechanism built in somewhere else??? Unless its the steering wheel, which would be awkward.
  18. Its has PF , in the image showing whats under the front hood, you can see a two-lead black wire, on the right side, coming out from behind the two black bent beams On closer look, just a weird reflection
  19. Skid steering works great on ice and dirt, but what about asphalt? Tires wear out quickly?
  20. 41999 introduced a bunch of panels and parts in (at the time) exclusive colors, including metallic silver and dark blue, for a low volume production exclusive set. There is no reason why this can't happen again.
  21. My kid, now 8, had no trouble with technic from age 6, but since I only gave him smaller sets, wasn't much of an issue. With the parts from his Technic sets plus Technic parts available from other themes he has made some fairly nifty designs. Some of his friends, however, are not interesting in MOCs but just build according to the directions. I think that how a child takes to any type of toy or device or sport, for that matter, is highly dependant on the child's interests and influences (I'm a engineer in product development and prototyping, so guess what my kid likes to do - we don't let him near the burners, yet). However, his sister is more into system builds and working with bricks, not Technic, so go figure...
  22. Kumbii - seems I'm using the new style triangle (99773) rather than the old style (2905)...
  23. Roof does seem a bit tall, but with your gorgeous bodywork, who is noticing?
  24. Ambitious but doable, I look forward to seeing your version of the supercar! Perhaps waiting a bit to see what new parts will come with the Porsche?
  25. It's easy enough to brace the M-motor, then the two 1x2 jumpers are no longer needed. Just replace the axle 3 w/knob with axle 4 w/stop, otherwise these extra parts fit right in (I'm missing one blue axle/pin connector to attache 3x3 beam to motor)
