  1. A lot of great MOCs have been made with 42039, 24 hour race car, but maybe a bit over your price range Since he already has a red car, 42040 fire plane will be a nice compliment. 42048 race kart is also very good
  2. I'm thinking , thanks to Jelo in post #1065, above. (and Jim's hints). Still hoping for some nice stripes or other details.
  3. But beware, I find any number of sets built in LDD in which the wrong colors are used (we really do need better QA/QC in the "Official LEGO Sets made in LDD" topic, but that's a different issue) - most often its old grey for MSG and dark grey for DSG, but I have come across many other instances of wrong color usage. What would be nice if the next update of LDD would have a theme just for current, and correct, color-part combinations, and a theme for current and past color-part combinations. Or, maybe we can find a masochistic person to make some templates with valid combinations.
  4. I just noticed this part in lego digital designer. Could the small ends possibly fit into a pin hole? But this part fits nicely into the two holes, 61184 - according to LDD, not tested IRL. I imagine other parts with the bar will fit as well
  5. Please correct me if I am wrong, but most of the new parts are in "LDD extended" theme only, which means that unlike the older parts, new colors for older parts or any color for new parts are not in the "LDD" theme. For example, no technic axles are shown in yellow, although some are now available in sets, and the L- and servo-motors are in 'all-red' only in LDD-extended only. Of course, you can always assign any LDD color to any part, but having official (in terms of current or past availability) color-part combinations is convenient for MOCing purposes.
  6. I'm guessing another update will come in 3-6 months, as they need to assign correct colors to all of the new parts, plus fix all of the new bugs... And thanks TLG for keeping our dreams alive (overly dramatic music plays on a tiny little violin).
  7. Great review as usual Jim, this set is probably the most talked about at my house, so probably need to get it. I am looking forward to seeing what the kids do for mods.
  8. I guess its better than purple Are stripes involved???
  9. A did a quick contrast adjustment, burned (darkened) the headlights somewhat, adjusted color balance and reduced color saturation a bit. You can see that there is still detail in the backdrop cloth in my version, but not in yours. One possibility is that our monitors are calibrated for contrast and brightness differently, so we are seeing different versions of the same images.
  10. Yes, its curious they would use orange, when there are plenty of black or MSG of those parts in production. Could be for an upcoming set in another theme.
  11. Jim,is there something orange you are not telling us?
  12. Is 24122, "Cross holes w/double 'phi' 3.2 shaft hole" a new unreleased part? Also looks like many parts under "hoses" are now flexible
  13. Looks like no new IRL work today, more important chores to attend to
  14. Hoping for lots of cool metallic parts, and at least one set of spare parts...
  15. Hi Grum - have fun with this. Are you going to add PF's? And don't do what I did, and install the clutch gears backwards, figuring out much later, and then rebuilding the gear box.
  16. Perhaps the oddest, "That's LEGO?????"
  17. You want to avoid mixed lighting - natural light vs. artificial (frequently a mix of old-style tungsten filament bulbs, halogen, compact fluorescent, and LED) vs. studio lighting - mixed lighting results in weird uncontrollable color balance issues, especially in highlights, backgrounds, and reflections. I've had good luck photographing various subjects with either indirect natural light (filtered by a window shade, with reflectors for fill), soft box/tent with halogen lights, diffused camera flash, or LEDs - but never with mixed light sources. Make sure your in-camera color balance is set to either 'auto' or to the correct light source, and use a grey-card to double check and confirm. Golden hour photography is great for landscapes and achieving moody effects, but generally not for detailed and clear product photography. The unidirectional light does not provide good illumination over the entire subject.
  18. Nice video for explaining suspensions to kids, and them having the build IRL. Comments are well taken, but nice to have another way of building in the tool chest.
  19. If that's what they are teaching in graduate school these days.... Back in my day, we called this "mastering the obvious". Stacking bricks for stability is a well known art in any number of trades. However, I am mildly impressed by the statistics and work involved in programming to determine stresses on brick-built structures (the definition of the stresses on each brick is ME 101, though). I suppose a practical application would be in construction and the engineering of complex architectural designs.
  20. Whow bro, turn down the contrast on that GIMP'd image, its burning my screen! Seriously, you pumped the contrast too high and blocked up the shadows and blew out the highlights. Just a little color balance on the original would have been fine, unless you are looking for a posterization effect. I used PS on your image, if you don't mind (I'll delete if you do). The final appearance is really a matter of opinion and taste, though.
  21. Looks like a hot-rodded 1930's Packard. Nice use of parts, esp. wagon wheel for steering whell - but shouldn't there be two seats?
  22. Finally, a good use for Chima minifig heads . Nicely done, a lot of detail in a small space, especially the look of the log cabin interior.
  23. It's like deja-vu all over again. But I think we had tan curtains!
  24. I know from a second-hand source, that at least in North America, TLG works very hard to balance supply and demand, to avoid having to sell at a discount. The internal marketing people are working overtime to make sure that their sales forecasts are accurate, which of course ties back into manufacturing forecasts and profitability. Match supply with demand, no need for sales, make more money - seems like a winning formula for TLG.
  25. Well, it's exactly as expected. Price corresponds to part count. Overall, a nice set. My kids are already lining up to get one!
