  1. I'm finding that daylight-balanced LED's are the best for any number of reasons...
  2. Agreed, IKEA is probably your best bet - but Raw Wood Furniture, or something like that, can also be a possibility, if you are willing to assemble and stain/paint your own units.
  3. Costs only slightly more than the LEGO rechargeable battery, so thats a plus given all of the added enhancements. You need a smartphone/bluetooth device, so thats a negative. Will need to watch this one, especially in regards to durability and robustness. But, I am thinking that TLG is also moving in this direction as part of the upcoming??? PF2. Also, almost all of this functionality is already in EV3, although the EV3 brick is larger and only controls Mindstorm motors at constant voltage. EV3 is bluetooth controllable and customizable with its own Android or third-party apps.
  4. I've got one similar to the model on the left side, it kinda of works sometimes, also
  5. Well, customer service is replacing the brick - and they had no idea why the center button no longer works - but getting a new brick and sending back the old one.
  6. Thanks - certainly will be calling customer service later today, I was hoping for a quick fix, as I was planning to continue teaching 'intro to robotics' to the kids after working tonight, using the LEGO Education teaching material. Guess it will have to wait...
  7. Sevenstuds - autocorrect, fat fingers, and Sam Adams were responsible for that typo!
  8. Beer, and occasionally ouzo, tequila or rum; what else do you need. A good light, and occasional consultation with LDD, although I prefer printed instructions.
  9. I'll call LEGO customer service in the morning (actually later today, yes I am up late ). Hoping someone here has a quick fix. I have a new EV3 brick with rechargeable battery. Recharged the battery while attached to the brick, the brick was initially on, then auto-powered off about half way through. Now, the brick will not turn on - the center button does not move nor can it be depressed - no 'click' when pressed, left/right up/down back buttons all 'click' as normal. Any thoughts on how to reset or what's up. I get the same result regardless if rechargeable or AA alkaline batteries are used.
  10. The original IDEAS submission for this project has an impressive number of details, especially in the internals and the modularity, separable stages with moving parts, plus a lunar lander and two minifigs - here's hoping that all of this is faithfully preserved in the final product. However, the IDEAS submission was done in LDD, so some of the features may not be transferable to real bricks
  11. The 'wax' sticker is clearly a reference to this NSFW product Need to make one of these stickers to add as well, very popular back since the 1960's, at least in New Jersey and the US East Coast.
  12. When I first met my wife, she drove a tan (brick-yellow) colored beetle, and she is still enamored of the car, although its long gone. This could be a way to finally turn her to the way of the AFOL . Clearly a purchase by me, regardless. Great detail and much better looking than the older beetle set. Really dig all of the greebling, cowabunga dudes!

  14. I know that street vehicles don't count here, but... I was a passenger in a pickup truck, about 1000 feet deep inside of a mine, so maybe that counts. And of course, flew on several 2/3 seater small planes on occasion...
  15. Well done, like the simplicity and style.
  16. Great, I learned something today - gears with prime number of teeth - actually makes sense to avoid those nasty harmonics. And may come in useful some day on some of our designs in which vibration can be an issue...
  17. Don't worry, it will be back in stock in 2-3 weeks or so..., and it will sell out again, and it will be back in stock, again, and so on... I'd suggest having a nice summer and waiting till October to get double VIP points on it
  18. Retrospective design strategy. Justify your actions after the fact. Classic business maneuver. Also called CYA
  19. For me, the hardest part is explaining to my kid why I won't be getting this any time soon, if at all, he's only asked over and over since March or so. Last night together we looked at Jim's excellent review, the little guy's eyes kept getting bigger and bigger - "its orange, lots of gears, really cool, etc..." was his reaction, as typical for an 8 year old. Doesn't care if it has no functions, or the gears don't work. He can push it around all day long (as if I'd let him push around $300 worth of ABS). He doesn't know if, but he is getting the AROCS real soon, that should settle him down a bit.
  20. Having a hard day at work, so trying to wrap my head around how the gear box works. Looks great, complex yet simple in execution. Would really like an animation or video to show it in operation.
  21. Earlier today I was thinking that this is an attempt to bring back Model Team, but without all of the design details that made MT so fantastic. This project seems to me like someone's wet dream fantasy to have a Technic Porsche - "lets make it big, bright orange, and Teeeeeechnnnnniiiiiiic!" Just throw lots of Technic at it and see what sticks. And then our PR/marketing guy and your PR/Sales guy will go out and have a round of golf, drink some shots, and laugh at congratulate all of the suckers customers buying the set. It is selling out, afterall. For us, we get some new parts and new colors, and maybe in a few years, lots of used sets for sale at low prices. Just hoping that TLG keeps up the good work on the real Technic sets, such as BWE, new tractor, AROCS, etc...
  22. Just underscores the realization that this is a "shelf queen" as 1974 so aptly stated, neither LEGO nor Porsche care about the functions, just the looks and marketing. Does not bode well for future entries in this 'Ultimate Technic' series
  23. Dumb question for you guys - why is the Porsche the 2016 flagship? It seems to be in its own category, "Ultimate Technic". I am considering the BWE to be the true 2016 flagship - largest regular set, released on August 1st (typical timing for flagships), and with significant new parts and new functions.
  24. This set is clearly intended and designed just for display purposes. The action of the main function, gear shifting, is not even visible, as the engine remains mostly hidden, so that changes in speed of piston movements cannot be seen when pushing the car as gears are shifted. Most of the design effort (but apparently more could have been done) is for appearances only. Even the number of new parts is disappointing, as compared to prior year flagships. My feeling is this is exactly what was intended: form over function. Personally I'd rather have the opposite, hence BWE and maybe tractor for me. Thanks for Jim's (and Sarial's) reviews to illuminate the design intents of this set. I predict it will sell out day 1, and continue to sell out until several more production runs have been finished. Too many people are enamored of the set ("It's a Porsche!") to care about Technic-specific functions, they won't care that the gears don't shift correctly, but will think having a suitcase is really cool. LEGO does know what they are doing. I only hope they up the game for future Ultimate models.
  25. Jim, thanks for the name-check , and especially for the excellent well-balanced review. Style, lay-out, comments and comparisons are all top-notch and set a new standard for 'ultimate' reviews for EB. For me, based on your review, an eventual purchase, but I won't rush out and get one. I will be stocking-up on black axle/pins and 3L pins, though.
