Only ETTC Cherub Survives Pirate Onslaught From all across the Brick Seas come tales of woe for the East Terran Trading Company. Of the seven vessels that set sail this season, only the ETTC Cherub has made it to port. That in itself is an oddity, since it is the least seaworthy of the lost ships, a slow, chubby fourth rate best used to transport bulk cargoes such as grain. Our man in New Haven reports that, according to the crew, Cherub and its escort, ETTC Muharib, a brig-rigged sloop of war, encountered the pirate Captain Nordau sailing Buccaneer’s Dread off the western coast of Cascadia. The crew of the Muharib covered Cherub’s escape, but the Muharib was captured by the pirate. Meanwhile, our reporter in Jameston sends word that none of the five Terramen that set sail have arrived in port. The treasure fleet, led by the ETTC Sussex, is presumed to have fallen to the pirate Nordau, as the Cherub crew report that, later in their voyage, they briefly spotted Buccaneer’s Dread again, but sailing with not only the prize Muharib, but the Sussex and the ETTC Pallace as well, not to mention a Lotii war junk! (This would explain the report from Poorvintia that a Carno fleet headed back from the war zone was attacked by Buccaneer’s Dread and the Muharib, taking as prize the Lotii war junk Longspur.) None of the other ships in the treasure fleet—ETTC Royal George, ETTC Endymion, and ETTC Covenanter—have been heard from, and the worst is feared. What Will the Price Be on Captain Nordau’s Head? It would seem that this season has brought an unprecedented success to the Buccaneer's Dread, entering Captain Nordau amongst the most infamous pirates of our age. The ETTC is likely to put a grand prize on the pirate’s head, although their credit may not be as good as it once was. Carno will be yet another faction on whose list of enemies the Buccaneer's Dread occurs. Pirates Raid Mooreton Bay — Again! Notorious Commodore Kane Strikes This Time City Treasury in Shambles Just a few months after Mooreton Bay was raided by Captain Nordau, the notorious pirate Commodore Kane and his fleet led by the massive galleon Soberano de los Mares have raided the Corrish city. Out of Quinnsville we hear that Kane’s fleet was briefly encountered by a Corlander squadron led by HMS Queen, which attempted to delay the pirate until more help could arrive, but Kane’s fleet outmaneuvered them in the dark and slipped past. When it reached Mooreton Bay, Kane’s fleet let fly with a series of furious volleys against Fort Denison, reducing it to rubble. The fort silenced [OOC: Both small forts in Mooreton Bay will be inactive until MOCs showing their repair have been posted], Kane’s crew launched their boats, and their numbers were staggering; more than 500 pirates made their way to shore! Kane’s pirate army swarmed the town, ransacking public buildings and collecting much loot as they searched for their prize from the prosperous settlement. The attackers eventually reached Moore House, seat of the settlement administration, and the treasury was plundered. The vastly outnumbered defenders are said to have put up a valiant defense and the commander of the militia, Captain Stanley, and Mooreton Bay Mayor James Hume were reported to have been killed in the close quarters fighting. The attack was swift, the pirates retreating back to their ships, taking vast amounts of gold and valuable goods with them. Later reports revealed that Mayor Hume actually survived, although with severe injuries, and his current condition is unknown. We have received some reports that the mayor has made scathing attacks on Corlander colonial leadership for not re-enforcing Mooreton Bay’s defenses after the first raid by Captain Nordau earlier this year. Reliable reports from the scene say the mood of the survivors in the settlement is near a boiling point, both at the pirates and the Corlander administration. One report states that the citizens appear “seething with anger” and are “burning for revenge.” Whatever the truth, Corlander authorities will need to act decisively in the coming months or risk losing much. Eslandian Trade Fleet Defeats Captain Gore But at What Cost? From Yeldo we hear that there was much confusion when the war galley HMS Carnage and the small sloop Rhodos, two ships known to be part of pirate Captain Gore’s fleet, sailed into port under Eslandian flag, but with no other Eslandian ships! What was expected to be a trade fleet made up of the war galleon Espada de Luna, the even larger trade ship La Descoberta, and the cog Holder’s Secret was nowhere to be seen. According to sources in the harbor master’s office, the Eslandian sailors report that their fleet first engaged Captain Gore near Prinport. As the ships sailed east, the two fleets engaged in a long-running battle. The pirate scored an early pyrrhic victory when Holder's Secret exploded, but it took Gore’s small sloop Dolfijn and his flagship, the brig Hades' Doubloon, with it in a fury of hellfire. The brave Eslandian survivors took advantage of the chaos and swarmed over the low sides of the pirate’s galley. Once they took the HMS Carnage prize, they turned her on the Rhodos, now alone in fighting for the pirate. The Rhodos was quickly taken by the Eslandians, but fire from the explosion of Holder’s Secret now raged out of control over Espada de Luna and La Descoberta. Both had to be abandoned. In the end, not a single ship of the original Eslandian fleet remained, but two pirate ships were taken over. As if all that wasn’t interesting enough, we hear that there are conflicting reports on the fate of Espada de Luna, Eslandian Admiral de Flynt, and the pirate Captain Gore! All reports confirm that La Descoberta sunk as a result of her fire, but Espada de Luna was still barely afloat, albeit a smoldering hulk lying low in the water, when last seen. Furthermore, Eslandian Admiral de Flynt was not among those who made their way to safety. Did he go down with the ship? Rumors abound that perhaps Espada de Luna did not sink, and that de Flynt is still alive. And with the quick destruction of Gore’s flagship, his body was never discovered. Did he make his way to Espada de Luna? Did he and de Flynt strike a bargain amid the chaos? It is quite the rumor. Normally we would dismiss such tall tales, but Eslandian officials are being very quiet about the situation, and so we at the KPA reserve judgment at this time. From the War Zone Redcoats Engage Pirate and Lotus Battle Fleet Our reporter in Spudkirk sends word of the victorious return of admiral Fletcher’s HMS Legion fleet. In an initial encounter with the pirate Montroy, the Corries exchanged blows with Cardinal's Shadow, unfortunately losing the HMS Perseus II, but sent the war junk Leatherneck to the bottom and drove off the pirate. Then Fletcher’s fleet intercepted the main Lotus battle fleet, led by the war junk Lion and including the formerly captured HMS Dominance. The redcoats lost the HMS Paladin but captured the war junks Langur and Lion herself, leaving only two damaged junks with Dominance. Later in the cruise, Fletcher again intercepted the now lonely Dominance, but was unable to take her, despite sacrificing the HMS Alexandra and HMS Wentham II in the effort. The HMS Carolina, returning from its solo voyage, also reported an encounter with the Dominance, but to no effect on either side. La Royale Joins the Frey! Our man in Seawatch tells us that the returning bluecoat battle squadron of four ships of the line, led by HRS Tonnant, report intercepting the retreating Lotus battle fleet. The Oleanders broke through the Lotus line, putting junks Lymph and Leapfrog under fire from both sides. However, the Navigator, finding herself alone against the leviathan HMS Dominance, went down after exchanging unequal broadsides for nearly twenty minutes. Her wreck allowed Dominance to escape as the Lymph and Leapfrog were sunk by the bluecoat fire. Land Campaign News SoonTM We have received word that reports from the front lines on El Oleonda are imminent, but those dispatches have not reached us yet. As soon we receive any detailed reports from Seawatch or elsewhere on the island, a special edition of the KPA will be forthcoming. Pirate Round-Up Montroy and Bloody Bill Captured! From Jameston we hear that, after the pirate Montroy escaped from the Corrish HMS Legion fleet, the notorious pirate attacked Carno’s Caracal fleet near Neustadt. Montroy sank the Greedy Guppy, but lost his flagship Cardinal's Shadow to the enemy. Not having realized the change of flag of Cardinal’s Shadow, the Carno fleet was able to take the rest of the pirate fleet unawares, and all were eventually captured. Will this be the end of Montroy? Meanwhile, our man in Westface reports that the HMS Indefatigable came into port with Bloody Bill’s flagship, Crimson Revenge, in tow, and reports are that Bloody Bill is in chains! The Indefatigable also towed in the Dozy Dragon, a mercantile junk from southern waters known to have been captured by the pirate in the past. Sailors talking in the taverns say Indefatigable first sunk the pirate sloop Little Scavenger, then captured the junk, and finally chased down the damaged flagship, making it a clean sweep of Bloody Bill’s pirate fleet. LeColeon Evades HMS Indefatigable Twice Bloody Bill was not the only pirate that the HMS Indefatigable tangled with this season. Corlander naval reports also indicate that Indefatigable engaged the fleet of the notorious pirate LeColeon on two occassions this season. The first encounter was northwest of Nova Terreli, where Indefatigable sank the pirate brig Angelfish before LeColeon escaped. From King’s Harbour we hear from the crew of the Namerean trader Novice that LeColeon subsequently captured the schooner Newcomer and damaged schooner Nuthatch before the Namerean traders sank LeColeon’s Nighthawk (previous captured from Namere by LeColeon) and made their escape. The second time HMS Indefatigable found the pirate, squadron mate ETTC Fara was able to capture the pirate cutter Belus while Indefatigable traded damage with LeColeon’s flagship, Reaver’s Revenge, before the pirate made another escape. Hardly a profitable journey for the LeColeon, unless the Newcomer is found to be stuffed to the gunwales with bullion. Corries Evade Clutches of Jan Van Sud From Terreli we hear that the HMS Alice, a small coastal supply vessel and gun boat, was attacked by the pirate Jan Van Sud along the Eslandian coast, but the redcoats escaped. From Balondia the crew of the small Corrish xebec Satyr also reports being attacked by JVS in coastal waters, and the Satyr was eventually able to damage the pirate sloop Aardvark in a running fight to the north and make its escape. And so it would appear that Jan van Sud has very little to show for his efforts this time, and yet we hear that he has scored big on the black market. What is the pirate up to that we don’t know about? Gentleman Privateer Meets His Demise From Quinsville we hear that Sea Rat traders led by The Octopus II spotted the polite pirate in the Sea of Thieves, south of Port Raleigh, and quickly launched a preemptive attack, damaging cutter Maverick and forcing both it and the lugger Audacious to escape. From nearby Elysabethtown we hear that the gentlemanly pirate tried to attack local pearl divers in their canoe, but the natives lured him onto a reef, wrecking the Audacious. The Gentleman Privateer, as he is known, continued to pursue the divers (ed.: in what seems an ungentlemanly manner to us), who had recovered a fine batch of pearls, but the Maverick was damaged on another reef and finally gave up the chase. Finally, we hear from Calisto that the Mardier fleet, led by the man-o-war Mongo, spotted the Maverick when it passed through the straights between Elysabethtown and Puerto Alijo, sinking the cutter and sending the Gentleman Privateer to Davy Jones’ Locker. Black Flags in the Far East News of action in the far eastern New Haven Sea! From Noveau Oleandia we hear that the black-flagged Andromeda and her cohorts chased the tiny El Cisne, managing to damage it before it escaped. The crew of El Cisne report that, in the pursuit, the pirate man-o-war Black Sam and sloop Joker's Folly fouled each other, dragging under one and capsizing the other in a freak accident. Jolly Rogers Kiddie Corps Strikes Again From Jameston we hear word of three encounters with the black-flagged Sea Rat Jolly Rogers. The Jolly Rogers, along with the schooner Spitting Snake of Pontelli, attacked the Corrish Terraman Octavia, but the young pirates were driven off by fierce resistance. Later in the cruise, the small sloop Bonnie was spotted. The full crew of the Jolly Rogers boarded the Bonnie and carried her, only to find none had stayed aboard the Jolly Rogers, which sailed off into the horizon uncrewed! Later the young pirates attacked the Carno supply ship Caribou to no effect. Francois the Elder, We Barely Knew Thee Our man in Fuerte Unido reports that the crew of the brig HMS Atropos was attacked by the little-known pirate Francois the Elder near Isla de Romantica. The pirate quickly found himself outmatched, and the crew of the Atropos sent Francois and his ship, the brig Rabid Ranger, to Davey Jones’ Locker. While we celebrate the passing of another pirate, we must admit that he might have been the least-successful and least-feared pirate in the Brick Seas. And A Case of Mistaken Identity? However, after sinking the Rabid Ranger, the crew must have had too much rum, as they attacked the neutral Sea Rat trader FTA Fluttering Petal with fatal outcome, sinking it. The Fluttering Petal was a yawl-rigged junk, originally from the southern seas before captured in an ill-fated attack on an armed Sea Rat convoy five years ago, and the Petal has been a common sight in these waters all that time. Perhaps the crew of Atropos mistook it for a Lotus war junk, but that is not enough of an excuse to avoid an international incident. The captain will have much to answer for when he returns to a Corrish port. Weather Report High Winds across the northern seas from the Horn to Terraversa played havoc with shipping these past months. Namerean sloop Nymph, sailing out of Balmin, was blown off course and forced to sail down the coast and make port at Londa. Meanwhile, one of her escorts, the armed sloop Numbat, struggled with the winds as the Namerean convoy approached Terraversa; once separated, it was forced to go north and make port at Nola Mar. To the east, a fierce storm system made its way through the Cocovia and Prio Seas. From Salida Este we hear that the Garveyian sloop Gazelle sprung a leak soon after setting sail and had to return to port. Our man in Lavalette reports that the armed sloop Patriot III of the Prio trade fleet also sprung a leak as it was heading for Lavalette and barely made it to Windfall. The Corrish brig Puffin II was tossed about quite severely in the storm and diverted to Alexport, but its delicate cargo was ruined by the rough seas. And from Fuerte Unido we hear that the Sea Rat trader FTA Night’s Whisper diverted to the Eslandian port when its rigging was damaged in the storm. There are also reports of storms in the New Haven Sea, but we have not heard of any disruption to seagoing traffic in the area. Mercantile News Several merchant crews were celebrating in Breshaun this month, as the crews of La Recouvrance and other Oleander ships in her fleet were rewarded for their cargos of goods from Terraversa. The crews of HRS Phoebe and HRS Helios were also spotted drinking and carousing after profitable runs. Eslandian ports also greeted traders warmly this month. A Mardierian trade fleet reportedly made a tidy profit on their visit to Nova Terreli; Altonian traders were seen celebrating in taverns in continental Terreli; and MCTC captains were rewarded on their visit to Weelond, as were the crews of Oleander traders Cornucopia and The Sloop Draco. High prices could also be found on the continent for goods from the islands. Our man in Belson tells us that the crews of a couple of small Eslandian traders were well paid for their exotic cargoes, and from Granoleon the same could be said for a couple of much larger Greenie trade ships. Sea Rat markets were also paying well, at last for some in Charlatan Bay. Our man there tells us that the crews of various FTA ships were buying rounds in the local taverns and visiting the brothels. We also hear that black markets in some areas were booming, perhaps a cause-and-effect result of the capture of Bloody Bill and Montroy and the death of Captain Gore. Pirate operations around the Brick Seas definitely took a hit, so supply and demand has driven black market prices up. Financial Times Our financial reporters have been going through the receipts of the various trade companies across the Brick Seas. They have found that the Eslandian companies, to no one’s surprise, are maintaining the best bottom lines. The Merchants Colonial Trading Company (MCTC) shows a balance of more than 26,000 DBs, and MAESTRO shows more than half that at approximately 14,500 DBs, plus 3,000+ DBs in their international subsidiary, MAESTRO-COR. The Corries’ East Terran Trade Company (ETTC) shows a balance of around 10,000 DBs, but that is likely going to take a hit after the recent losses at sea. The Sea Rats’ Free Traders Association (FTA) is next on the list with nearly 7,500 DBs. Oleon’s Royal New Terra Company (RNTC) has a balance of around 4,000 DBs. No other trade companies (which surprisingly includes the Eslandian East Trade Wind Company [ETWC]) has a significant balance. Meanwhile, a look into the financial health of the Halosian nations offer some minor surprises. Mardier appears to have recovered from their war debt, and Garvey has built a sizable trade network (reportedly including some shady dealings with black flaggers). Altonia and Namere both appear to have done well with their trade fleets, building up their national coffers. And Carno, while not rich, appears to have survived the financial pitfalls of their colonial war with the Lotii. The Terraversan treasury, however, was decimated by the war with Oleon and the Grand Duchy under Archuke Oldis has yet to recover, with many war debts still on the books. Grand Admiral L’Olius, now ruler of the Commonwealth of Terraversa, has also found war debt to be a significant problem as our eastern brethren forge their own path. We need to get those percentages back to earlier MRCAs.
