That's a very odd polybag for them to make. Are we sure it comes with a thor minifigure? It sounds like it's a minibuild and I can't see how you could do the boat and the goats large enough for a figure to sit in the boat for only $5.

Probably the worst possible way. Doomsday seems to be trying to evoke Infinity War Thor (the best one)

Yes that's what I meant, Thor 4 sucked so why remind people of it?

As for the polybag, the Dr Strange one had 44 pieces. I guess you could build a small goat boat and have Thor stand by it? Harry Potter had 30435 (a microscale Hogwarts Castle and a fig to put next to it), and 30651 (using forced perspective like the Dr Strange one) so maybe it's something like that?

the "dark quinjet" was just an inaccurate leak about the Doomsday quinjet

Thar's the one I meant. It's close enough to a spaceship, makes noise, and has minifigs of desirable characters (especially Cyclops) so I'm half surprised they didn't stick a smart brick in it and mark it up by EUR 70. ;-) Though I guess limiting a Doomsday set to just a few countries wouldn't have been in their interest either.

Batman and Robin sucked yet it got a Batmobile.

The designers have some weird tastes.

It’s also Batman. They will make a set for the old serial Batman movies from the 1940’s before we get a lot of things people here really want.

I'm not sure what 2027 would look like if we don't get anything else for Spider-man: BND or Doomsday as it would limit them to Secret Wars sets in October and possibly Beyond the Spider-verse sets? Granted there's only a handful of characters I'd want from more potential Spider-man: BND or Doomsday sets though and I'm not sure they are ones Lego would give us.

There’s plenty of Infinity Saga films to draw from.

I mean at the end of the day it's not like a 2027 lego polybag is doing the heavy lifting in marketing Thor for upcoming films here, but it is still strange since presumably it won't include Love and Thunder Thor.

I guess he just doesn't have a ton of things you could do little builds for?  But even then- at $5 I just can't see thor fitting in the goat boat, so if it's just Thor standing next to something out of scale why not do the guardians pod from infinity war? Why not do the Stormbreaker Forge or a buildable Fenris Wolf so the minifig can actually interact with the build?

I think they knew at the time Smart Bricks were a risk and they'd rather go with the S-tier characters/builds rather than multiply the risk they're already inherently taking with the Doomsday sets. Plus the backlash would have been insane, especially considering unless Doom was the only smart fig they're now hampering the fig selection even more by locking Cyclops, Falcon, or Thing into "smart" form. And presumably they'd want to launch with smart spider-man and stuff.

I don't think we get marvel smart sets at all, but if we do, my guess is something like:

Goblin Glider and some rooftop builds with Smart Spider-man and green goblin

Hulkbuster with Smart Iron Man, Smart Thor, and ultron

Quinjet (Avengers 1) with a smart brick included, Smart Captain America, Smart Black Widow, and then Hawkeye and some chitauri.

Leviathan and a smart brick with Smart Loki, Smart Hawkeye, some chitauri, and a terrifying new bigfig mold used to insert a smart brick into a vaguely Hulk-shaped body.

Still such a weird choice to make the Batman and Robin Batmobile and not even put Robin there.

Yeah, I'm not sure where the idea that we need spoiler sets just to fill out the year comes from. We've come off a number of years here with very few sets based on recent MCU projects, where most sets were spider man or infinity saga. They could definitely do infinity saga stuff, even go back and cover Thunderbolts or F4 since they're coming to Doomsday in pretty similar costumes.

Not 'to fill out the year' its to capitalise on recent films and deliver missing characters that would sell. Spider-man & Avengers sells also. Legacy film sets may not sell unless its tied to recent projects/characters. The only film that fits to do a legacy set for in 2027 would be Thunderbolts, TASM2 or X-Men.

Looking back, not much from Phase 5 they could revisit:

  • Fantastic Four - Silver Surfer and H.E.R.B.I.E
  • Captain America 4 - The Leader and Sidewinder
  • Deadpool 3 - Unlikely we get a set due to the films age rating (Majority of the cast)
  • Captain Marvel 2 - Unlikely we get a set due to the films poor performance (Prince Yan & Dar-Benn)
  • Ant-Man 3 - Unlikely we get a set due to the association of the film with Jonathan Majors controversy (Majority of the cast)

Phase 4 is done other than maybe a set focused around the cameo characters from Doctor Strange 2.

When we get to 2028 following the chaos of Secret Wars it'll be the 20th anniversary, which would hopefully focus on the Phase 1 legacy stuff we are missing which I'm realising is primarily from the Thor films.

Missing key 'characters' from Phase 1:

  • Iron Man 1: Ho Yinsen, Raza
    - An Iron Man origin set would fix this.
  • The Incredible Hulk: Emil Blonsky, Abomination, Betty Ross, Thunderbolt Ross, Samuel Sterns
    - All of these characters are in the Final Battle.
  • Iron Man 2: Whiplash MK1, Justin Hammer
    - The villains worked on the drones together so a partially inspired set or do a Monaco Grand Prix set.
  • Thor: Odin, Frigga, Laufey, Heimdall, Sif, The Destroyer, Darcy Lewis, Volstagg, Fandral, Hogun,
    - A D2C Asgard set, maybe also give us Kurse & Malekith from Thor 2, along with a Thor Vs Destroyer Epic Moment Collection could cover these.
  • Captain America: Howard Stark. Heinz Kruger, Arnim Zola, Howing Commandos
A Captain America origin set could have give us some of these, though I think it's unlikely we ever get the Howling Commandos.

*snip*

Legacy sets don’t have to be tied to recent films to sell well. Based on what Lego keeps going back to, it seems that sets based on the first three phases of the MCU and the Raimi Spider-Man films are actually what sell the best. And there’s still plenty of material that hasn’t been covered yet or that hasn’t been covered in years and could sorely use an update.

Saw Brand New Day and loved it! Such a great Spider-man film, really felt like watching a comic book.

Regarding the sets:

Spoiler

It’s crazy how little some of the characters we got as figs are in the movie. Two of them are literally in 1 shot and 1 of them has maybe 2 shots and a single line of dialogue. And yet they got figures with leg printing, something Steve Rogers Cap has only just got in a D2C hellicarrier.

I’m not complaining and besides Punisher (who makes sense to exclude) I don’t see who else they could have included. I guess some Hand Ninja would make slightly more sense.

Extra mad that Black Tarantula came in both sets, if they were going to repeat anyone it should have been Scorpion.

The DODC building interior is a real let down but there we go, I guess they didn’t have much info/art to work from.

It's less that a legacy set for 'x' might not sell well it's more Lego's confidence in a legacy set for 'x' selling well. Everything Lego do is based on the landscape of what sets sell and the general audience awareness of characters with a rough turnover of around 2 years to react if they focus on something.

For the Raimi sets to happen:

  • December 2021 - Spider-man: NWH brings back a bunch of prior characters resulting in insane demand for them in Lego form
  • August 2023 - 76261: Spider-Man Final Battle as a response to demand. That set sells insanely well so they decide to examine if they can branch off from that into a line of Raimi sets deciding to start with the most iconic.
  • July/October 2024 - Marvel's Spider-man 2 releases with Venom & Symbiote Suit & Venom 3 releases. The popularity of Venom in culture in 2024 helps convince them to adapt Spider-man 3 and a Venom Bust based on the Venom franchise.
  • August 2025 - 76321 Spider-Man vs. Doc Ock Subway Train Scene as the most iconic set is the first to release.
  • January 2026 - 76334 Epic Battle: Spider-Man vs. Sandman thanks to the NWH sales and Venom becoming more popular in recent years given focus in different media.
  • July 2026 - 76356 Venom Bust thanks to Venom becoming more popular in recent years given focus in different media.
  • January 2027 - Spider-man Logo with Symbiote Suit and Green Goblin thanks to the sales of 76321 Spider-Man vs. Doc Ock Subway Train Scene and Venom becoming more popular in recent years given focus in different media. Symbiote variants appearing in the Sony Venom films and Marvel's Spider-man 2 is why we are also getting Lasher in a set.

For 2027 we would just need to examine which sets sold well and look what was getting focus in 2024/2025 which is why we're getting a Marvel City Skyline with Galactus & Human Torch and why we'll likely end up getting a Thunderbolts legacy set (which would also pair well because we've got Sentry and it could give us Void)

Phase 1-3 are generally focused around Iron Man, Thor and Captain America who due to over a decade of media remain popular to this day, hence us getting a lot of legacy sets for them. Doomsday/Secret Wars bringing back a lot of characters combined with the 20th anniversary in 2028 will help with that as it'll give Lego more confidence to expand the legacy line-up. Before all the film announcements I would have expected 2028 to focus heavily on Phase 1-3 legacy sets, but perhaps they'll start that in 2027 instead.

Saw BND yesterday and liked it a lot! :sweet: My main gripe is the incredibly short appearances of Tombstone, Boomerang, Tarantula, and Ramrod. Yeah, we were constantly told they were more like cameos, but I was still hoping for a bit more here, particularly for Tombstone.

The sets are pretty accurate overall apart from the obvious colour scheme change for the vehicle, and the villains not being present during the scenes depicted in the sets, but we already knew that :snicker: Unlike NWH, there isn‘t too much potential for a follow-up set though. The Punisher, some Hand ninjas and Sadie Sink‘s character would be nice to get, but that‘s not massively likely, unfortunately :shrug_oh_well:

Exactly. Once again, you can literally just look at prior years of the theme:

(All these years have at least a set or two based on at-the-time upcoming movies, much like 2027 will have secret wars sets- probably more than most of these prior years got for their MCU movies)

2026: While there being two major upcoming movies actually got us a lot of sets for the upcoming films, we still got a bunch of comic based spider-man sets, a set based on 2018's venom, an age of ultron set, an Iron Man 1 set, etc.

2025: A bunch of comic based Spider-man sets, MCU sets for iron man 2/3, civil war, endgame, age of ultron, a hulk monster truck...

2024: more comic-based spider man sets, MCU sets for age of ultron, guardians of the galaxy, thor ragnorak, avengers 2012, etc.

2023: Spider-man comic sets alongside sets for Endgame, age of ultron, infinity war, avengers 1, a comic based ghost rider set, etc.

Sure, in these years you've got some NWH stuff they're catching up on, or an X-mansion a few months after the show wrapped up it's first season, but it's very clear that the majority of the sets that aren't direct, branded tie-ins to upcoming films aren't meant to tie in to new content. It's just a bunch of stuff based on spider-man or older MCU films.

The point is, there's no reason to expect lego has to make more doomsday or BND sets to fill out their selection next year. Quite literally most years have the majority of sets filled with comic-based spider man stuff and infinity saga's greatest hits. I think the idea that their legacy sets have to tie into recent characters or projects is pretty well debunked here.

I haven't seen the movie yet but it's just a weird situation. Even if they hadn't focused so much on keeping Sadie Sink's character secret, I doubt she's got a costume in the movie, so it's not like she'd make an interesting action figure or minifigure. So you're left with Spidey, Punisher- who many merch companies don't want to put in their merch given his association with R-rated content- and the Hand ninjas, who they didn't seem to give the merch companies access to.

Saw BND last night too and also loved it. Peter’s arc in the film and the character moments between him, Ned, MJ, and especially Frank were golden.

Really makes me lament the lack of a Punisher minifigure in the corresponding sets even even though I understand the reasoning. Not getting the Hand for me isn’t the biggest deal but that’s just because I’m already getting my fill of red ninja minifigures from Ninjago.

And god, the design of the suit in this film is exquisite. The colours and texture really pop!

I would say 8/10. Everything I can talk about, I loved. Peter's arc was excellent and I think extremely relatable for a lot of young men. And of course

Spoiler

like most people on this form, I imagine, I continue to be happy to see Peter and Ned bro-ing out over legos.

Jean was the main issue for me. She is way too evil early on to be properly sympathetic. Aside from the DODC agents she murders who have no connection to illegal experimentation, she kills a bunch of cops and normal civilians, and not just in the chaos of the tank chase or kilometer freeze. She forces a random civilian to kill himself, fully intentionally and for the sole purpose of freaking out spidey. Not to mention threatening, attempting to kill MJ, and also kind of sexually assaulting Peter (And MJ, if you think about it!). Like, stuff like that had nothing to do with her sister, she was in it for the love of the game. I don't think it's justified and "just let her go" because the DODC experimented on her sister, I think you gotta at least let the New Avengers watch over her.

Speaking of that, loved seeing a Thunderbolt in this movie, and I think it gives Yelena some charm. I'm glad she seems to be doing well and kind of wish we got a post credits scene of her trying to explain potato sizes to the thunderbolts or something.

But on Jean, seriously, even IN her tragic backstory, she and her sister are just taking over minds for fun, like a scene or two after it's explained how traumatic that is for those people. This is so weirdly similar to wandavision- mind-controlling character takes over a bunch of minds and we're supposed to just be like "yeah that's fine" because she felt sad and a government organization did bad things to a loved one. Like, if the Department of Transportation killed my dad and then I went and stabbed 27 random dudes, that's not- that's not even sympathetic, that's just insane.

Punisher was a highlight of the movie for me, Jon and Tom's real-life friendship really bleeds through, the theatre I was in couldn't stop laughing in pretty much every scene they had.

Ned and MJ I also felt were much stronger than in previous movies. I feel like Zendaya generally doesn't emote very much in what I've seen her in, but she's really good here.

The Hand were great,

Spoiler

The Hand were great, I wasn't expecting them to point out that yeah, a lot of Hand members are just brainwashed young adults who totally could be rehabilitated. I hope they're OK. And that if that stunt actress has any chops they let her be Psylocke.

Loved Hulk here- they didn't overtly do the "banner forgot, but I didn't", but I think it's better in the nebulous way they had it play out.

50/50 on what seems to be turning the DODC into the group that will build the sentinels, just because it adds moral ambiguity that I think X-men comics normally eschew. As spidey says in that one Ultimate comic, "people don't hate you just for being mutants, they hate you because you're *^*%@*^% @%^*^@%(@% @ %^*@^#%^@I".

Do you think we could ever get Punisher ever again in a D2C Marvel Modular Spidey based or is he completely banned now since the Bugle

This makes me lose hope on Deadpool being in Avengers sets smh, stupid Lego, I guess the comic version from 2012 will have to do

The Lego  Wolverine from 2012 really works well for the  DP&W look

Capeshit at its worse creates a weird dynamic where the superheroes are an elite clique with no consequences and no real care for the little people under them outside of the abstract. I won't lie, I think I've got an Alan Moore rant in me about how psychic characters emphasise these worst traits of the genre. There's a weird sense of entitlement that their allowed to violate people's boundaries and privacy because they're part of the right clique.

To be honest the Mutants as a whole, I think, are a terrible allegory that don't really hold up to real world scrutiny or parallels but that's an argument I'm not brave enough to risk amongst marvel fans.

Yeah, Jean was extremely unlikeable in this film. Her flashback shows her hobby is going to a park with her sister and controlling people against their will. We never learn anything else about her and we never see the sister again so we don't really experience the cruelty of the DodC despite them torturing Jean. She was abandoned by their mother when their powers appeared but that was likely when she saw them taking over people stripping them of bodily autonomy as they puppet them around with no remorse and realised how evil they are. They could have lived entirely normal lives but they chose to use their powers to strip people of their autonomy in public with no care for what it does to those people and that resulted in the DodC finding them.

Sure Jean is on a mission to find her sister, but she's controlling old women to drive tanks into occupied cars and buildings with the goal of blowing up the tank (While the old woman would have been inside) which she does presumably killing a bunch of civilians. Throwing people off buildings either to mess with Spider-man (The guard) or to actually try and kill them (MJ) who she also uses her body against her will to kiss Spider-man just to mess with him. She controls a guy into traffic and gets him killed. She threatens to murder everyone in the entire city. She controls people to shoot others killing them. Her rampage through the DodC building presumably killed countless people. Then the film has the audacity to have Peter claim she's not a murderer during the finale and she gets away with everything never facing any criticism for her actions :wall:

It's WandaVision all over again with Wanda controlling/abusing/killing and then never getting consequences with others telling her she's a good person simply because she suffered a loss. You can't have these characters act this way and then expect the audience to care for them in future, for me it's made me never want Jean to appear again which is depressing as she's rumored to be in Secret Wars. I don't want a figure of Jean Grey now. This isn't how you introduce a character you intend to be a hero in future, this is the sort of horrific stuff she'd be doing in a grounded Dark Pheonix movie which has already been told before in X-Men: The Last Stand.

There are claims that the opening montage villains was originally longer featuring more antagonists, with the most likely being Shocker given his gauntlet is redesigned slightly and appears later (Claims of Rhino are false led by someone viewing a car pushing/flipping device on set)

It's also heavily believed that Tarantula and Boomerang would reprise their roles, Tombstone especially because there was a heavy focus on the practicality and movement of his suit allowing the actor to remove and throw the Boomerangs from the suit so there was probably a proper fight scene cut. We know Tombstone filmed an extra scene that never appeared in the movie and we've got a remark about some villain scenes being cut but we don't know which. I think it was very disappointing that the villains, even Hulk, appeared so briefly and contributed so little to the story. Scorpion was primarily used as a joke or an extension of Jean's powers and not having his mask was dumb (Blocking gunshots with his tail was silly)

It makes sense Lego would have adapted them, given they were featured in marketing and merchandising a lot, similarly makes sense to exclude the Hand because it would have just been a red Ninja. Jean doesn't have an iconic look in the movie so again makes sense to skip with her believed to be returning in Secret Wars and presumably X-Men in 2028 (?)

That makes sense

Spoiler

Can’t say I’m disappointed, I wasn’t looking forward to seeing any of those characters anyway and for me the character moments in the film were way more interesting than any of the fights/action scenes.

The only action scene I would have quite liked a bit more of was the Hulk fight, just because seeing those two go at it really brought out my inner child.

Interesting Shocker was rumoured and that makes sense, I did think it was brave of them to call back a character from 3 movies ago.

I don’t personally have a problem with Jean being a bit heavy handed, she’s been abandoned by her mother and had her sister abducted and it was needed for this movie to create some tension. Plus this is a fresh take for the MCU, I don’t mind some heroes being morally conflicted.

I forgot to mention before but Peter essentially inventing the inhibitor collar feels like a big deal!

Emma Frost has apparently been cast for the new movie. I wonder if this increases her odds of appearing in a set or if Lego will consider her costume inappropriate.

There goes my hopes of a Sydney Sweeney Minifigure xD

Knowing the MCU nowadays, Female Costumes are just padded tactical suits

Good times Black Widow from Iron Man 2, Avengers, Winter Soldier, Age Of Ultron

We've all seen Mystique's costume. Who seems likely to be played by Inde Navarrette from Obsession in the reboot.

In discussion of what Peter does

Spoiler

him inventing those inhibitor collars is definitely going to be relevant for the upcoming Mutant Saga and I can see him popping up in the X-Men movies, between his newfound connection with Jean and likely someone like Magneto wanting to target him for his creation.

And I agree with you about Jean. People forget this is now adult Jean from the comics who has been an X-Man for decades and has died and come back multiple times. This is still child Jean (she's 16 I think) who has never met Xavier or the X-Men in this world. If you read her origin issues, when her telepathy first manifests, she's practically catatonic and on a completely different wavelength than other human beings. The prologue to X-Men: The Last Stand is the best representation of this when Xavier and Magneto come to meet her. Before Wanda ever held a neighborhood captive in WandaVision, it was Jean who did it first and as a child. This is what Jean would be, with unlimited power and no moral restraint or control, until she has Xavier to steer her in the right direction. The Last Stand even has Xavier basically say that the Phoenix personality was Jean's real personality which he locked away to control her, making us and Wolverine wonder if the Jean we've known all along (the good moralistic one) is simply Xavier's invention to suppress the real Jean.

This is the problem though, if Mutants are automatically like this without Xavier than yeah, people should be scared. The bigotry angle doesn't really work if any Mutant who isn't caught young enough by this one guy will randomly make you kill yourself or sexually assault you for the love of the game. The interior logic of the X-Men sorta crumbles under this. But also, let's be real the further films are not gonna address the person she made kill himself, this film itself doesn't care about it or even truly register it happens. Normal people are a statistic at best in modern capeshit, these mud people can sprayed across the pavement if it means that the Golden Shitler gets to work 12 minutes earlier

Spoiler

yes, Jean is going to be one of the leads of SW along with Tom and the other Spider-Man actors. I can't speak about reception to Jean yet, since she's still too new (although social media and critics are raving about her, Sadie Sink's performance, and her chemistry with Tom Holland...looks like Jean Grey x Peter Parker is going to be a popular new ship after Boblena, but I want to address Wanda.

You said you can't expect the audience to care for characters like Wanda except all circumstances show otherwise. She was basically the only breakout character from Marvel Phases 4-6 after WandaVision debuted. You can tell Marvel wasn't expecting this and had no idea of how beloved she'd become as a character, since they were hedging all bets on Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Sam Cap, Kang, etc. She's the #1 most demanded character for Doomsday, trending everytime a trailer comes with fans asking why she isn't included. So regardless of how she was perceived by some in MoM and WandaVision, clearly it worked for her since her popularity remains skyhigh. A show like Agatha became one of Disney+'s top-watched shows simply because of the popularity of WandaVision with this as a spinoff show and perceived as a sequel that could hint at Wanda's return. Without even showing her, the very idea of Wanda was enough to make this a breakout show over other Disney+ shows that had more popular names as the leads but couldn't generate the same audience viewership. So clearly Wanda sells and it doesn't surprise me that the spoiler character from BND is following in Wanda's footsteps. Especially since MCU Wanda was heavily inspired by said spoiler character, so it's rather fitting.

And I don't think it's a coincidence either that the Russo Brothers, at SDCC, were specifically asked about 5 female characters who are notably missing from Doomsday: Wanda, Carol, Jean, Storm, Rogue. Five of the most popular female characters (arguably Marvel's most popular female characters besides Black Widow and MJ) and none of them are being marketed for Doomsday. Marvel's misogyny problem remains skyhigh along with their racism problem between cancelling Wonder Man S2, cancelling Blade after a decade of nothing to show for it (the same character who literally originated Marvel superhero movies), cancelling that War Machine spinoff, doing nothing with Shang-Chi after his film was one of their rare successes in the post-Endgame era, etc. I'm not saying that every character should automatically warrant a project just because of their gender or race (for example I have zero interest in War Machine as a solo character) but there is a disturbing pattern here that hasn't gone away. And as happy as I am with Ryan Gosling being cast as Ghost Rider, it's a little on the nose that Marvel is giving him the attention they never did with Mahershala Ali as Blade.

This is something that has been endemic in superhero films. Look at Snyder's Man of Steel. The whole third act is about Superman tearing up the whole city and buildings crumbling on people in his "epic" CGI fight. He's not concerned with saving lives or rescuing anyone in the destruction he causes. The loss of life is never acknowledged or blamed on him.

Spoiler

Mutants get used as an allegory for minorities quite often, whether it's a racial minority or the LGBTIQA community. As you said, it's not a real great comparison since those groups are not predisposed to violence and aren't inherently more dangerous (and historically, it's usually the opposite against them that's true). There wasn't much about mutantkind in general in the movie, outside of the Grey sisters, so I'm curious how far they'll go in terms of anti-mutant bigotry for future movies. I doubt it's something they'll touch upon until after Secret Wars. The closest we saw to backlash against enhanced humans in the MCU was Civil War with the Sokovia Accords and superhuman registration act.

The vehicle is based on the tank chase scene, they are probably referring to the figures included.

Yeah, hopefully we'll never see them again after 1HY 2027 and if we are very lucky we'll never see them in Marvel sets. I pray the Pokemon theme can escape them also.

 Set/Movie villains discussion:

  Hide contents

FF had the same problem. That opening montage was originally supposed to be much longer and more of a prologue/first act opener. Mole Man's role in the movie was heavily truncated (thank goodness, his actor was terrible and felt so out of place especially in the 60s-coded setting). That's why he and Subterranea seem to come out of nowhere in the movie since the whole beginning was establishing them and showing us the FF in action. I think Disney was worried it was taking too long to get to the real story so they forced the opening to be cut down to the montage we ended up getting. That seems to be the case here as well.

Also Raimi's scrapped Spider-Man 4 originally had a similar montage scene of Spidey beating multiple villains. I know Mysterio was one of them, since it was going to turn out we'd seen him in Spider-Man 2 and 3 before, but I don't remember the other villains from the montage off the top of my head. I think Rhino was one of them. Basically all the "B-list" villains who aren't interesting enough to be the big bads but would work for a throwaway sequence as one-off villains. Wondering if Sony took inspiration from that for something similar here, to just scatter in a few throwaway villains. TASM2 more or less did the same thing with Rhino being heavily promoted as a major villain but only showing up at the ending.

Yeah, it's a fundamental failing of the genre, which is why the Raimi Spider-Man films outlast pretty much every other superhero film, they're a rare exception where the individuals being saved are actual people and action scenes are based around saving them rather than just fighting the bad guy.

As for the Mutants, I think their stance as an allegory does just not hold up and it's odd when people act like it does. By it's premise it's saying some very nasty things about whatever group you like to imagine them as. Fans and many writers think Professor X and Magneto are stand ins for Malcom X and MLK but they were really based on two Israeli Prime Ministers and that kinda lays out the key issue. X and MLK were civilians who spoke for oppressed groups, the actual inspirations ran a massively powerful government with advanced weaponry. The former are people who's only power is their community and latter are able to nuke someone. The X-Men are far more akin to a geo-politically significant military than any marginalised group because that's sorta what they were made to represent so when you try cast them as a minority group it rubs against their inspirations.

I wonder how that goes for an apolitical way to talk about this weird fact of the way this superhero team is written, I think I avoided saying anything actually political about anyone involved

With how extraordinarily well Brand New Day is doing at the box office, I wouldn't be surprised if LEGO tried to come up with something to squeeze an extra set or two out of the movie.
