I would hope it mean a general derivation from the 4+ line towards more sophisticated models for young children, too. Maybe a bit akin to the microfighters: an exaggerated and small ship with reasonably complex building techniques instead of the big one-use molds and overly simplified techniques.

I firmly believe that if a build is too complex for a child to build it by themself, the better solution is to spend some family time together and help the child to build it, not to degrade the set itself.

The main reason for the whole 4+ line, I believe at least, was originally the somewhat weird and rigid way how adults read the age recommendations. I worked a few years in a toyshop and many adults found it surprisingly difficult to believe that a 9+ can easily be bought to a child aged at 8 or 7 or 6. On the other hand, if a 9 year old needed help to build 7+ set, they often thought that the set design was broken, and inversely were weirdly proud if a 9 year old child could build 14+ set...

The age ratings have always been so bizarre to me. I get it's there to show of the complexity of the build but pretending that that scales with age is a strange equivalency at least for anyone over 6. I know as a kid I built past my age limit plenty. But honestly I think have it be such a definite system in bound to lead to confusion from some buyers, as your examples neatly demonstrate. It's almost too similar to movie ratings even though these are soft and those are hard, but the similar age based system might make some unfamiliar buyers getting it to give make poorly informed choices based on treating the limits as hard. The recommendations themselves are pretty arbitrary in som cases, and obviously 18+ has the connotations of extreme content like gore and porn which is what makes 18+ Lego Winnie the Pooh such a funny concept.

As I see it now a 4+ set is a juniors set, an 18+ set is aimed an collectors and any number in-between is a just a normal set.

I What we got instead was a Solo story crunched through the Disney machine: an orphan anti-hero driven only through the will to escape,

Not do be pedantic, but I read the Legends Han Solo Origin Trilogy as a kid and he's an orphan anti-hero. Even Lucas had him as an orphan anti-hero in earlier rough drafts of episode 3. Disney might own Lucasfilm now but I think the biggest story affecting decisions that Disney imposed were Bob Iger giving the sequels a strict short timeline (causing them to be rushed out, he wanted a star wars movie every year) and mandating they resemble the original trilogy more than the prequels did, hence the reused iconography and redone story elements. Though those two things did spell doom for the trilogy in my eyes, I don't quite see it the way you do. I don't think Disney is trying to force all media under its large and growing umbrella into their old fairy tale blueprint, Disney had done lots for Star wars tonnes of good, plenty of bad but I don't think that that is part of that.

Bogus Leeks could be the name of a rock band, or a vegan gastropub or even a Glupp Shitto.

High likelihood it's not bogus though given the source. Although that Tower of Fate set never happened so who knows.

haha 'bogus leeks' was my favorite clone trooper

i don't mind a design overhaul for the jsf to make it smaller more compact and minifig scale but this makes it seem like a 4+ set which in my opinion aren't even valid design attempts. I don't mind simplified designs, the 2019 x-wing is one of my favorite sets for how it looked at mid to far distance, it has an immaculate profile, the 2026 x-wing is a tad overbuilt in my opinion, I guess we will find out in a few months.

Fair, Solo is perhaps not the best example from this point of view. The origin story I refer to is the one presented as a sidenote in some of the old books, though can't recall which one, and it was a very short sidenote anyway. In the spirit that Han, Leia and Luke and others are having a dinner and Han tastes a particular type of food, which reminds him of having a dinner with his original family in Corellia, or something of the sort and he shortly reminiscents a piece of his story. Similarly the Thrawn-trilogy refers to the Clone Wars in a very short sidenote of Mara Jade's thoughs as if the Clone Wars were a clash between humans and clones, when they later were turned into the clash between the clones and the droids.

But I think the general point stands, nevertheless: Jyn is an orphan and anti-hero, Rey is an orphan and even stronger anti-hero, Cassian Andor is an orphan and anti-hero (though it works on him), funnily enough even Dedra Meero is an orphan. Like Andor demonstrates, the Disney pattern does work on some characters, but I genuinely doubt if the writers would really have a choice, if they wanted to. The Disney pattern includes some other things besides orphan and anti-hero, like the requirement that the main protagonist cannot display questionable morals.

But you are right that the Disney pattern may not be the most crucial factor, why some pieces of media have suffered but more the other reasons you mentioned. And the pattern can be used in genius ways, too. Mandalorian is an interesting example how you can combine a ruthless bounty hunter and the Disney pattern without turning the bounty hunter too dull and nice, considering that a bounty hunter is a person who is paid to kill people, by revolving him and the show around the dad jokes between him and the baby Yoda. He never had the chance to kill almost anyone with a face, much less so for the sole reason of earning money, but it doesn't bother the viewer, because it feels like a motivated choice due to baby Yoda, not an external limitation. And this is not a critique, that was a genius idea. Nevertheless, the pattern seems to affect the story choices, even limit them.

have you tracked what sorts of connections/techniques seem to get different age ratings?

it's interesting looking at a lot of similarly priced sets in the 6+ and 7+ ages, makes me think tilted wings and landing gear are off the table for this set.The microfighter is what throws me, if its rated lower than PloKoon's microfighter this thing might just be a flat triangle with some of the new angled pieces slapped on top and a windscreen. I have no idea. The age rating is just so odd, the old 2008 anakin one has fewer pieces but is 7-12.

Any UK/Europe guys noticed that the Marine magazine now has a TIE defender poly bag instead of the marine. I’ve never heard of them swapping the poly bag with the magazine I wonder if clone bros have gone mad and Lego sold out of them. I did get a couple myself but I didn’t see anyone in Europe have this issue when they dropped previously

Just when I thought we were starting to win again, Lego pulls this crap.

The BP better have more minifigs and/or be $25.

Anakin’s JSF is evidently next year’s 4+ set. Kinda weird it took them 8 years to do something PT/ TCW based for 4+.

And there had better be a TIE AVENGER (#468)

Just pray the unnamed Fart Play set is not a Republic Gunship. We cannot survive the consequences of such a set.

What if Hephaestus hears your prayers, the god of craftsman might grant that the next smart play set should be a Tie Avenger instead? Complete with Smart minifig of a Darth Vader's least favourite officer.

One jewel regarding the gloomy atmosphere in some media pieces more than others is the Revenge of the Sith book by Matthew Stover. Episode III is my favorite movie, both considering Star Wars and generally any movie I have seen, but the book really does honor the original concept of the movie only adding a layer of poetic and profoundly dark atmosphere to it.

So much so that I once said to my ex, who is a teacher of literature, that The Revenge of the Sith is perhaps one of the most genius examples of post-modern narration with art-like style serving the feeling of an epic. She initially despised the idea to grant such an honor for any popular culture book (literature students want to make a difference between the literature of high and low esteem), but I read the book aloud to her, and even she had to admit that I had a point.

It's probably the best Star Wars book of all time. Matthew Stover has the best prose of all the Star Wars authors.

How is Rey an anti-hero? I'm pretty sure she's just a standard hero. You also say there's a requirement "that the main protagonist cannot display questionable morals" but you just listed an anti-hero (Andor) who has questionable morals.

Correct. You can post MOCs here in the Star Wars forum using Brickarms, Firestarter parts or other accessories to your builds. But if you make a Star Wars MOC out of Pantasy bricks it'll probably go in a separate part of the forum the way things are looking.

The age rating isn't the concerning part to me- the T-rex escape set doesn't look much different detail or technique wise from a 6+ set. The piece count is the really concerning part:

The 2018 Anakin's delta-7 would be $27 today. That set was 33% more pieces than this one. So even at a straight rerelease this would be a little overpriced, but the piece count of the 2018 JSF is 1.5x that of the 2027 one. That's really concerning.

The 2022 delta-7 would be around $34 today. Presumably cutting the third minifig that set had would more or less have accounted for that, but the 2022 JSF also has 1.7x the piece count of the 2027 one. That's a massive decrease in piece count for a set that wasn't exactly chock full of 1x1s.

A smaller JSF would be OK, but not at the same adjusted price as the larger ones.

Trust me even a 4+ usually requires some "family time", Lego can be quite hard to connect/press together for a small child. I don't think that's the issue.

The number of parts though and the duration of the build: most 5yo simply don't have the patience to create a 300+ piece set (unless it's somewhat modular like Gabby's dollhouse, that can be done chunks)

When I was a kid, sets had far fewer details and pieces. I still quite like putting together vintage sets for that reason, 150 pieces was a pirate island with a small raft and canoe, 300 pieces gave you a sizeable battleship... You really assembled and (maybe more importantly) disassembled such a set in no time as a kid.

It seems a bit odd that neither 75480 (Bespin Duel) or 75494 (Cloud City) are included in the lasted list that's appeared.  I've been really looking forward to seeing more details about them - I just hope that they haven't been cancelled.  I'm surprised that there's going to be another wave of Smart Play sets, but perhaps they were too far into development to stop at this point.  The thought of a Smart Play Slave 1 isn't overly appealing if it's going to be along the same lines of the X-Wing or TIE Fighter - although I'll admit that I'm mildly interested by the rumoured Hoth set....

Alright, I think I learned a couple of new words, thanks to your posting. And all good, I didn't intend to use the word "dreaming" in any negative way (not that I think you thought of it as such) or something. After all, we are all allowed to have our hopes and dreams. It's gotta be part of ourselves and being self aware. And what's a good forum worth without any of them?

I wouldn't mind much more dual moulded legs for the Lego Star Wars theme at all. As I was saying, the tendency of receiving those went up in the last few years. With Grand Admiral Thrawn and the Clone Cadet being just two recent examples. But as for side printed legs, those truly sound like endgame and end of the line level to me. Like I don't see them anytime soon.

The last cloth carma wearing Trooper that I can remember was the 212th Airborne Trooper featured in 2020's Grievous Starfighter.

All good, I agree that one should be allowed to dream. And you are right, I totally forgot about that Grievous Starfighter...

Perhaps the question is how details like a kama or a skirt or a coat even are handled by Lego in the near future. And I am the first to take your side and say the current 'front only'-print is a horrible choice. Horrible! In many cases it looks like the figures have aprons, not coats or suits with boots. The new ARC-170 pilots look nice from the front, great even, but from any angle they look like wearing an apron. In case of poor Dedra it is even worse due to the weak printing quality. She has a gray apron... And the Marines and any other kama-equipped trooper looks like he has rags hanging from his belt.

You and I, we may disagree on what is the best solution to those issues: cloth pieces (as in the past) or more prints/dual moulds (as rarely done and probably unrealistically expensive).

But I think we both could imagine better quality troopers. And looking at what Lego can do with Dreamz or Ninjago or some CMF... why not?

Funny, I thought most SW EU novels were bad. Even as a fan of Stackpole's BT-novels I hated his X-Wing series e.g., and only Zahn remained on my shelf.

Then I read Chuck Wendig and Claudia Grey... and I thought I should give Stackpole a second chance.

I just don't understand what their plan is with this one. If it's being downsized, that could work, but I think 160 will end up either being too small or too basic, and in either way $30 sounds too high for it.

Canon is similar to the EU in that regard, the quality of the books is wildly author-dependent. Not everyone is Timothy Zahn.

thanks, i had no idea about that one. I really hope this part of the leak is wrong, JSF have always been 7+, which I am guessing was the bent wings. Maybe a flat Triangle build could still look good.

I feel like the off-camber technic wing build, and the snot techniques used on the cockpit would have to be entirely gone in a 5+, it seems like they are still allowed a few technic connections so maybe they came up with a new way to angle the wings off some basic technic pins, I have no idea, I wanted them to do a new build entirely and the monkey paw curled, I didn't mean 4+ haha but there is still hope, maybe it's actually a real design, but like who honestly would put the 4+ N-1 on a shelf next to anything. It's also so odd because they have retired all the other JSF and they have the V-19 on sale, why would they do this set unless it was supposed to pair with that one. I will cope until we have pics.

How is Rey an anti-hero? I'm pretty sure she's just a standard hero. You also say there's a requirement "that the main protagonist cannot display questionable morals" but you just listed an anti-hero (Andor) who has questionable morals.

Rey is mostly an anti-hero, because she initially does not want to leave Jakku and join the rebellion, and even when she does, she is mostly motivated by things happening to her or to someone else around her, not by pursuing things she wants herself. Of course, this eventually changes, when she does want to confront Kylo Ren, but nevertheless, her character is not defined by an arch of pursuing something, but by a series of events moving her around.

Generally the division between an anti-hero and a hero is not totally black and white. It depends on the average type of motivation, which kicks the character going. In Disney's style, it tends to be the anti-hero type more often. (And to be clear, an anti-hero can be completely "good" and on the good guys' side and do heroic deeds. The definitive question is what fundamentally motivates the character, their own spirit or circumstances.)

Anti-hero is not necessarily any worse or better choice for a character than the hero type. Andor is an anti-hero, too. It is just a common trope and particularly common for Disney, so much so that one can see a pattern.

And yep, Andor has questionable morals, and he is more interesting and realistic exactly because of that, and indeed in contrast to the typical Disney pattern. What I learned, they shot Andor in England and tried to keep it low and not really ask for permissions, so that's at least the story how they avoided being constricted by the Disney ideals.

Anyway, the Disney ideals are a seemingly strict even if not totally opaque pattern. There are exceptions, but generally the Disney concept does dictate a lot what kind of content they can produce. In fact, the concept of Star Wars does too: a movie (at least an episode movie) should open by a ship entering black space, it should include a chase scene and a beast and a double fight at the end, and it should be told linearily and over a short span of time without written tags on the screen. Does not strictly apply in all parts to every episode, but the concept generally holds firm.

As a personal opinion, the Disney concept does not suit well to Star Wars, because it makes Star Wars feel and taste more like Disney when it should feel and taste primarily like Star Wars. For this reason I generally would prefer the only restrictions to be set by the concept of Star Wars itself, and otherwise explore the different ends of the lore. Not that the Disney era hadn't done it all. Andor was an espionage thriller fitted into the Star Wars concept (though I would have preferred them still cutting on screen tags and use more background shots and intercourse to reveal the location, but the series typically don't have budget for it; you don't see much aliens in Andor, for example).

I had to check the Falcon rumor myself, because the old one is still available on shelves in Finland at least, so that's a surprise.

Not necessarily a bad one, though. A neat re-iteration would be a somewhat playscaled Falcon model with complete and very detailed interior and complex design akin to the Sail Barge and a price tag say 400 €/$ or so compared to the extremely huge and expensive previous version.

Upscaled Rex minifig makes sense- generally they go into the prequels a few waves after the introduction of a subline with the OT, and Rex is the most obvious choice for that. I wonder how they'll do the pauldron- this is finally an opportunity to give a rex figure a pauldron that's the right shape, but if they want to fit with the minifig I imagine it'll be a big cloth element.

Looking at the only other 5+ set that's been brought up, it's pretty much just a 6+ set- definitely in the style of standard system ones. No giant chunks of molded plastic (well, aside from the T-rex, but that's of course standard for dinosaur sets) and the building techniques are consistent with the 6+ stuff. We can't know for sure but I don't think we can assume it's basically 4+.

If it is 4+, I don't think it'd give us an indication on scaling- those are never in scale with each other- but if it's a normal set I can't imagine it would be larger than the previous delta we had at 110 fewer pieces.
