The "hydraulics" are impressive. The design seems robust. I was thinking about building one of these a while ago, since they are common in rap songs. I recommend you make it look like the Impala in this:

I like this a lot! You should move the cannons up 1 stud vertically, because this ship, with people on it and cargo and heavy cannons, would reach that water level and sink..

Has anyone used efferman's U joints? Would you recommend them? I'm considering using them for my custom 9398 because the U joints keep snapping under load

I recommend you use a differential lock like this: http://sariel.pl/2012/05/compact-axle-with-a-differential-lock/ Or abandon diff locks for knob wheels, like this: And if you have Power Pulller wheels you should add them!

That maximizes efficiency (since you have less gears, reducing collective backlash) and is parts-inexpensive, but it's not very realistic (compared to most 1:1 cars).
