  1. Quick support by social media word of mouth is no guarantee, however; I suspect that it is accruing supports so fast because of many people who like the idea of promoting women of science, but who actually have zero plans to spend money on Lego, similar to Purdue Pete. I suspect part of the review--especially when a project races ahead like this one has--is looking through to see how many of its supporters are active Ideas community members vs. one-timers.
  2. Hmm. I never had any experience with G1, and only ever bought one set (Gali, although one of my kids got the purple one as a present). So, although I don't have much personal connection to it, I always saw Bionicle with a certain awe--something I appreciated but never fully understood. I always hoped to pick up more sets and master the CCBS system, but budgets always squeezed them out in favor of normal system sets. I am sad it is ending, and now CCBS will probably always remain a bit of a mystery to me.
  3. I agree with your entire comment, here, especially your thoughts on the pacing of Deathly Hallows. But I only quoted the above part because I feel this way about a lot of adaptations: while it seems like a lot of people worry about how accurately source material is depicted (my wife, for example, is a book-purist) I would rather see a book that has been well-adapted to the medium than faithful to the original. Film is film and you can't always do the same things as in a book, and your audience consumes it differently. Probably my favorite example is The Hunt for Red October; the book and movie are completely different, yet each relies on its format to tell their story. The movie does not try to work in every technical detail or side-plot that the book has, yet by paring away some parts manages to keep the same intensity and tone. So, maybe since FB doesn't really have much in the way of source material, the director won't get so caught up in it and can focus on making a good movie, rather than merely a faithful adaptation? I hope so. There is something magic (pun not intended) about the first two, but I can't put my finger on it. Apparently Chris Columbus didn't stay on (nor Cuaron after him) because Rowling wanted British directors for the series. Sadly I get a very George Lucas vibe from Rowling lately--like she can't stop meddling with her own work. Soon we'll probably get a Special Edition that makes people say "Harry shot first"
  4. 1. Frontiersman - a Daniel Boone type, reuse the Wiley Fusebot coonskin cap and include a dual-molded musket 2. Circus Strongman - unitard, handlebar moustache, brick-built barbell 3. Violinist - Concert black dress (with printed side slit?), new violin mold, and I'd be fine with a 3m bar for the bow despite the inaccuracy. 4. Politician - business suit with a "vote" badge and a bad haircut mold. (Orange skin optional). He would also need a dual-sided face. 5. Reptile keeper - similar to the skunk catcher but with a lizard or iguana, and food instead of a net. They could even reuse the Pascal mold from Disney Princesses. 6. Exterminator - with insect (fly? ant? don't care, really), reuse the welder's gear with printing and give him the headgear from the current volcano sets. 7. Movie critic - new popcorn bag accessory and printed 2x2 round tile with film reel printing 8. Librarian - library card 1x2 tile, new NK book 9. Giraffe suit - I stole this idea from Robert's designs. I would not be surprised to see it made eventually. 10. Maritime Explorer - Shakespeare's ruffled collar, puffy shirt printing a la Seinfeld, golden astrolabe and/or armillary sphere 11. Medieval minstrel/troubadour - new lute mold 12. Alien hippie - like your typical upside-down teardrop-headed alien, but with tie-die shirt and flower accessory 13. Space biologist - Spacesuit with printed trans-head jars of alien bacteria samples. (I dunno, I feel like I need something else that's space-y but can't think of anything else) 14. Lion costume -bashful face printing (cowardly lion) 15. Shepherd boy- not modern like the recent farmer, nor medieval; this would be more of a young king David type with new sheep mold, staff, and lyre 16. Flamenco dancer (male) - counterpart to the female from a few series back, with a pompom hat. A rose printed across his teeth would be awesome.
  5. Obviously there was some exaggeration there. I don't really want my eyes stapled open Sorry, though; I realize that came off a little offensive. I hope FB is different, but the trailer doesn't give me much of an indication that it will be. I have read the books for both series, but accuracy (or the lack thereof) doesnt really bother me. (Although I think The Hobbit would have benefited from being more accurate, if for nothing more than that it would have given the story more focus. ) With the HP films, however, I just felt like the last few of them were too...dour? There was a dearth of fun for me. Light-hearted moments felt forced, adventures didn't feel adventuresome, and real character emotion felt like it was suppressed behind trying to make characters look emotional. Everything gets smoothed over with grey and nothing seems to have much of a distinct flavor anymore. I suppose that is mostly why I lay blame with the director, because the elements are there for something fun and memorable and engaging, but the final product doesn't really deliver to me. Like I said, I want to like FB, but I just can't seem to when the trailers make this movie feel so samey to exactly what I didn't like about the others.
  6. I want to like the trailer and be excited for this movie, but I just...I can't. It simply doesn't do anything for me. From the trailers, it feels an awful lot like the last few HP movies, which were collectively generic, boring, cliche, and overall dull and awful IMO. I couldn't bring myself to even finish the final two, I found them so lifeless; I'd rather be chained to a couch and have my eyelids stapled open to watch Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: Part Five on endless loop. I figure the common thread that makes the final half of the HP saga so bad for me was that they all had David Yates as the director. As it turns out, he also directed this. I will probably see FB eventually, but I'm having a hard time mustering up any real enthusiasm for it.
  7. Congrats, winners! And congrats everyone who entered.
  8. I don't have any of these angled plates, but I did a similar thing with hinge plates. I had picked up several cups of them at the PAB wall last year and built them into regular geometries to form a Christmas tree. Tree construction by rodiziorobs, on Flickr This picture shows a seven-point configuration, a six-point, and a five-point. There are other pics on my Flickr that show smaller arrangements, as well. I used technic rods and progressively smaller wheels/tires to mount them vertically. You could use a technic beam held by keyhole bricks to place another brick right at the center of your shape. Even if it wouldn't be a perfect distance from either edge, it wouldn't be hard to build on.
  9. Looks like 3 Mariachis, a Hiker, a Spy and a Cyborg for me. I may also get a Arabian Knight and a Dog Show, but not likely. I hope the supply issue for these is better than for the Disney series; the closest I have come to finding those is one empty box at one of the Walmarts near me (which never carries CMFs) That wasn't even near the release, it was two weeks ago. Other than that, nothing.
  10. "...when everyone gets a free taco and my love!" ("Wait! Did he just say put to sleep?!")
  11. I haven't seen the reboot yet (who knows if I ever will?) but I keep seeing people compare it to the original. That's inevitable. Yet when discussing it it seems everyone seems to think the original was a perfect movie. Really? I just don't get the love for the original. I didn't care for it much as a kid (although I have some memories of watching the cartoon series), and rewatching it as an adult it simply doesn't hold up for me. I don't think the acting is great, the story is weak, and it's just not funny. For the most part, I find it a chore to sit through. I'm not trying to be argumentative, I am just trying to understand: what do people like about the original?
  12. First off, welcome! Keep in mind that you can build whatever you want no matter what colors you have or corp you join--if you want to build mostly in MANTIS colors but play for Kawashita, you could have your Kawa fig spy on MANTIS buildings or steal MANTIS vehicles. The same goes for any combination of corporations you choose to join/include in your story. When I joined MANTIS I had about 10 lime green parts...and hated lime green (I am almost not even sure why I joined originally!) Several of my first builds were my MANTIS fig spying on Octan, being held in an Octan prison, an Octan spaceship, etc., so most builds were predominantly white. Since then I have filled out my collection of lime so I can build for my own corp; you build what you want. As for players, Kawashita has definitely seen better days and I'm sure wouldn't mind the help now, but that's ultimately up to you. Don't let Octan's PR machine sway you Speaking of...
  13. Ah, see, #1 is my problem there; I'm never fast enough to observe the elusive spam in its natural habitat. To complete this poem paradigm, You must first catch a spam in time; For if you're not quick, Someone else does the trick, And you're stuck writing second-rate rhymes. With no inspiration, You'll just find frustration, And commit further iambic crimes.
  14. I understand soaking in hot soapy water for hours (changing the water so it stays hot) can soften glue up to where you can rub it off with a towel. Might take several cycles of soaking and rubbing, though. An alternative is to use acetone, but since it eats ABS and makes the colors bleed I wouldn't recommend it.
  15. Is it Spam poetry?* If you really want to link it it might be better to just open a new thread... *Spam poetry, a phenomenon introduced by Actor Builder and picked up by several others, is poetry specifically inspired by spam posts on Eurobricks. These spams are often by (but not exclusive to) Korean spammers. There hasn't been as much of it lately, on account of the mods doing a great job at zapping spam quickly, but for awhile the spam was frequent enough that the April Fool's joke was to change EB's official language to Korean. The official spam reporting thread is here and there is more history of Spam Poetry if you start at the beginning of this thread.
  16. While on the one hand that's the goofiest designer video ever, it also needed more Goofy, if you know what I mean. The castle is pretty spectacular, even if I'll never be getting one.
  17. Yeah, a hard one! I know nothing of either Reagan's filmography, so I had to go this route: Nancy Reagan 1. Married to Ronald Reagan 2. who was nearly killed by a psychopath hoping to impress Jodie Foster. 3. Jodie Foster starred in The Silence of the Lambs opposite Anthony Hopkins 4. who was in Thor: The Dark World with Chris O' Dowd 5. who was in The Program, a biopic of Lance Armstrong.
  18. I almost didn't even see Sal in there at first! Major NPU on those dragon necks and tails, and the photography is superb!
  19. I love the perfect simplicity of the apartment, and your stories continue to be some of the most engaging in AG.
  20. I love how while the rest of us are struggling to put together minifig on a plate builds, you still manage to post these sprawling environments with buildings week in and week out. Hats off to you, sir.
  21. Woah! That's some small-scale NPU everywhere on this model. I love how perfectly proportioned it is to what an actual minifigure would be next to it. I might try and reverse engineer this and use it myself.
  22. Ha ha! Thanks for the comments on the build! Given that it is not much more than a fig on a plate I was only expecting comments on the photo quality (as opposed to my usual quality...go back and look if you want...it's occasionally hideous!) @Dannylonglegs Here is the bulb on WM's website, but I found it in-store. The picture says 40w but it is actually a 60w equivalent. My Lego room is literally a cupboard under the stairs, with a single bulb. I use an old ice cream bucket--#2 HDPE seems to work well--to diffuse the light, and since the bulb is LED it generates practically zero heat (although I'll never leave it on unattended). The pics below show how it looks and lights up the room, maybe I'll put the fluorescent back in for comparison. I really am amazed at what a difference it makes. Now I hopefully don't have to endure comments like this one (pretty sure it was Sal) again! CAM00310 by rodiziorobs, on Flickr CAM00312 by rodiziorobs, on Flickr
  23. The Three-Body Problem. A pretty intense Chinese political/sci-fi puzzle novel. Unfortunately as it goes on it becomes more and more Crichton-esque--meaning the scientific concepts are engaging (maybe a little dry), but the characters are disappointingly two-dimensional. Still recommended.
  24. Location: F03 (Forring) Tags: none Another week that's story-heavy despite being light on build. Enjoy! **************** After weeks of searching, Jex was no closer to finding Scorpio's sister than she had been at the funeral. She had to make sure that his remaining belongings reached his next of kin. It only amounted to a few books and journals, along with some claim tickets for some things still in MANTIS' possession, but in Jex's mind they weren't legally hers, and she sure as heck didn't want them, anyway. Because she was technically still on medical leave, Jex was able to go anywhere in Andromeda that was currently under MANTIS' control; her search had led her through several gate jumps to here, Forring. She was after the MSS Strata, a supply ship that was engaged in an operation in Forring's atmosphere. MANTIS supply ships were versatile, designed to reinforce a number of possible MANTIS operations in any circumstance, including mining, spying, piracy, troop and material transport, and war. Jex wasn't exactly sure what she would be finding here, but one of Scorpio's claim tickets stated that he had a possession that was currently held aboard the Strata. Maybe whatever it was would hold the clue to help her continue her search. After some asking around, she found the claims desk--or at least, the closest thing to it. "I am here to redeem this claim stub, and pick up whatever it is for. Says here the location is MSS Strata B68 #P-C04-k2." Minifig(s) on a Plate. by rodiziorobs, on Flickr "B68, you say?" "Yes, #P-C04-k2. Do you have it?" "Yeah, lady, but if it's down in B-block then it ain't what you seem to think it is. That ain't no normal claim stub you got there." "What do you mean?" "Come down with me and see for yourself. We'll have to call them to let them know we're coming..." (...to be continued...) **************** I should have done this earlier, but I got a new photo setup. Bought a Daylight LED and poster board at WalMart for less than $5. I always thought it would be so much more expensive, which is why I put it off The above photo hasn't been altered at all. C&C welcome.
  25. Those display boxes... I don't usually keep boxes, but those whisk me right back to being 7 and hoping mom would go to Kmart, just so I could go sit in the toy aisle and peek inside the huge Lego boxes for sets I could never have... Nice haul!
