[MOC] HP Diagon Alley - Flourish & Blotts with Pettichaps
deraven replied to Hersbrucker's topic in LEGO Licensed
Nice addition! For the sign I would have gone with "Shirts for Squirts" as the store features in the HP media, or just a little more fanciful than "Clothes for Kids" - maybe "Garments for Young Witches & Wizards" or something. That's my only bit of constructive criticism. Well done! -
The lack of those side windows doesn't bother me at all, but I don't disagree with you on this either. If we think about older sets (with the exception of Technic where it's still the case) that didn't have windshield glass (just the A pillars and maybe roof defining the area) or the old trans-clear 1x2 bricks stacked up there instead of a proper windscreen, those wouldn't fly now, especially in this range. Maybe we're in that transition again now with the side windows and we'll start to see that become the norm. I disagree with the point on Speed Champions, however. I DO think they look good, but they're done with a single full windscreen piece that is then printed or stickered for the bodywork. If something on this scale of these 10+ sets were done that way, can you imagine it just being a huge printed transparent piece wrapping around the front and sides? I guess something in-between might be OK. With the new 10274, for example, I think it looks like until you open the doors. Then you have just the glass sticking up with a tile on top when it should have more bodywork/frame around it. With other vehicle makes it would a lot worse than with the 1959 Cadillac, but maybe if they had a bit of printing on the transparent piece for the frame (like they do on some of the windscreens) it could look OK.

They're there, just rolled-down. But seriously, yes, they're difficult because of the A-pillar and would likely detract from the aesthetic unless custom molds were done which seems unnecessary.

Fantastic! The horse in particular is SO well done!
-
Love that it can still seat a minifig. You've captured all the main details nicely.

Burnt orange would have been better for Trump's skin tone (at least on his face!), but these look great. I like Trump's tie being a stud too long, too. Wonder if you could work something out for Biden's aviator glasses?

Hotel Transylvania - Wolf, Frank & Mummy
deraven replied to vitreolum's topic in Special LEGO Themes
Looks great! You've captured their personalities nicely, and especially good work with your part selection to mimic fur. NPU for the teeth on Mummy as well. -
Creepy, despondent, well-built. Very nice.

Is it available anywhere the 6285 BSB Prototype?
deraven replied to Elusys Ra Arwal's topic in LEGO Pirates
That's an interesting question. It was a very different world 30+ years ago when the BSB was being designed, so I doubt if there's much documentation out there. Perhaps some personal photos that designers took at work that might show it, or early product photography with a not-yet-complete design might exist somewhere, but I would be surprised if there were anything more than that out there. I wonder if anything was unearthed when they did the re-release in 2002 or if they just pulled up the instructions and made the couple of necessary changes and called it a day? Is anyone here able to contact Niels Milan Pederse directly to ask? As of just last year he was still working on set design for TLG, and has quite the catalog of incredible sets! --> Sets by Niels Milan Pederse -
Is LEGO using the 18+ rating wrong?
deraven replied to Lego David's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I think I echo what most folks have said so far: it makes no difference to me personally, but it seems totally inconsistent and almost random with how they're using it. I mean, TLG must have some data and an idea of what they're doing, but so far about half of the sets labeled as 18+ seem like they'd turn off more of their potential (younger) audience than they would attract an older one. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The only consistent determining factor I'm seeing so far might be "this set is somewhat over-priced for what would otherwise be the target demographic, so maybe we make the packaging more stark and older folks with more money will buy it." -
Awesome - definitely a very intimidating calvary unit!
-
Wow - this is wonderful! Love the approach you took to planning and matching the topography brick-by-brick!
-
Correct - this is from the 1979 UK catalogs. What's interesting is that yours appears to be an in-process photo (pre-press) of the layout before they put in the green rolling hill backgrounds and bright blue sky. You can see that it's definitely the photograph used for those 1979 materials if you look at the first & last page of this UK catalogue (they'd have been the front and back cover together, obviously), and the main fold-out image on this one as well. Where did you find this particular photo? Any more from what appears to be the product photography shoots?

Welcome to EB, Etienne! Lego is a universal language, so don't worry about the communication/language barrier too much. Happy building!
