Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion
SkaForHire replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Happy New Years to all of you as well! Eastgate ramps up for its celebration in a few hours. -
Actually... Every faction is taxed, including the sea rats, that tax doesn't come out of the member's pockets unless a new tax is raised. So asking for a tax break from anyone at this point is a moot point. The factions are awarded 20% of the value of what its total membership makes. So, as stated, even if you are a non-EGS player, you are still earning money for your faction by building.

The Empire of Corrington: Sign-up and Discussion

Even in the economic game system you can do whatever you want. The EGS is an add-on not a seperate game. You may use it to add additional value to your MOCs and stories, but you don't have to do anything specifically because you decided to participate in the EGS

Yes your licensed items are all free builds first, and licensed second. It has already been guessed at, but no, when your name goes into our database you get 25 DBs because you had to have had a sigfig to do so. Boooo... quick come to the dark... errr.. red side!

The Empire of Oleon: Sign-up and Discussion

You will have to get an Oleon leader to confer for sure, but another city on the most populous island in the Sea of Storms should not be a problem. -
The Empire of Eslandola: Sign-up and Discussion

So far the Poll from earlier this year was totally wrong. Eslandola and Oleon are killing it for membership, and the Sea Rats are almost a no show (I kind of figured Corrington would be low on members)- 780 replies

Brethren of the Brick Seas Poll
SkaForHire replied to SkaForHire's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Just in case anybody missed this, here it is Brethren of the Brick Seas! -
Don't worry about stepping on toes. We are here to guide you back into the realm if you slip out. Some more to add to Dannylonglegs' post. If you put the city in Oleon or New Oleon, you won't later be able to use these for EGS builds because they are in the Old World. As DLL said, there is rumor that there will be more islands in the very near future that all factions will be able to start building on. It might be better to wait the few weeks for this. But, there is always LeBellan, which is the richest of the Sea of Storms colonies, and belongs to Oleon. It is a sugar producing giant, with a tropical climate. It also needs settlers. Although there are two cities on the island, you could use your city as a third city. In order to do this, you would have to use the LeBellan map and state where the city was going to be (and make sure it is OK with your faction, if you don't want to worry about it being removed through story purposes by your faction!) The thing is, there is no LeBellan map right now, because I am still producing some of the island maps this week and next week. The other option is the "squatter" colony. This is a colony that you put on the map, and don't worry who owns the island. However, if you place it in somebody elses' faction, they may try to push you out using the conflict resolution rules. Additionally, faction leaders can "boot" a rogue colony out through story if they need to. I am not saying we are going to do that, but we can if it comes to it. Likely that Squatter colonies will have to either pay taxes if in the ESG or take on "building missions" if you are outside of the ESG. But, it is up to the individual nation who owns the territory.

Sea Rats: Sign-up and Discussion
SkaForHire replied to Darkdragon's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
The original challenge was to create a sig fig and put them in a MOC of some sort, just so we didn't have plain shots of sigfigs on blank backgrounds. It is the same challenge -- make a sig fig, create a small (or elaborate) introduction moc, receive 25DBs. -
Digital builds are definitely allowed for free builds, some of the contests might have limitations. Yes, and your free builds still help your faction. Also, your builds can help your faction claim land not currently under the control of one of the factions, even if you don't participate in the EGS economy. That is not entirely true (unless a faction has a specific rule) I might not have been clear enough when writing those rules on settlements, but you could have a non EGS MOC in a settlement that is part of the EGS. As long as somebody is keeping track that the MOC is located in that settlement, the value of the settlement would increase for the EGS. So you can still help your friends who play the game, even if you are not. Plus, by registering your free build, you earn points and money for your faction, even if you personally are not using the EGS system.

OK - For the forts, that is a way better way to do this. We will change the rules so that you can "grow into" your fort. So yes, if you make a 32x32 you can start by buying the small fort license, and it would protect as if it was a small fort. Then, when you have the DBs to do so (or your faction wants an upgraded for at that location and wants to pay for it!) you can just buy the new license. That works very well, and I think we can probably put that rule in for any property. As for location, for a fort you could put in anywhere on the map, the maps with grids are not up yet though. Which faction did you join? if it was Sea Rats or Eslandola, you could lay it down on one of their New Terra islands. If you are in Oleon or Corrington, you might want to wait a little bit (we are actually working on a place in New Terra where those two can put something right away.) Finally for the form, which form are you using? this form, the licensing form, has the correct terms. I don't know if there is a misplaced MRCA link in the public forum, but if there is, it would have the old terms and would be out of date. I am still rewriting the MRCA form, which is why I thought I scrubbed all the old links from the forum!

The Empire of Eslandola: Sign-up and Discussion

Humor is great! The rules can be fun, just at first they seem to be a lot -- you can actually bend them to have a lot of fun creating interesting and even silly settlements in the new world. For the first few months, there will not be a discovery option in the MCRA, but that is possible in the future. I am not giving too much away here, but the first couple challenges will be about adding islands to our map. You can lay down a squatter colony anywhere, you just have to A) draw a map of the settlement, B) post that claim (the main thread is fine to do this) and C) hope to heck that whoever gains control of that island (or has control of the island) lets you stay. I would not squat anywhere that is not in New Terra (East of Terraversa on the map) Because the map is moving that direction, and those Sea of Storms ports are going to get lonely out there. The new maps are coming in the next two weeks, so right now we encourage those who are signing up early to build their free builds and opening stories and be a little patient in choosing where to put their first buildings, settlements, etc...- 780 replies

Another way to get DBs -- post the ship MOC before licensing it! You can get 10DBs as a free build! Ok, so those terms are guidelines, that's why we changed the names of each vessel type to the generic Class 1 T Vessel, to avoid confusion. A class 3 junk / barge was a special type of vesel with high trade capacity but limited range, this does not mean that you could not build a class 1 or 2 junk that uses the statistics of one of those other vessel types. Your junk can be a trader, a well rounded, a fast, or an armed vessel, that is up to you. For the game purposes, you decide which license you want to "buy" and play as, as long as the MOC itself generally seems like it could fit that vessel type. Bottom line: Build what you want, figure what it can fit into, and get the license. I would suggest to people to build a smaller craft first so they can use the free license. For the bounty run, you need just yourself, actually, for any run, you just need yourself! Bounty (as in treasure hunting or fishing) runs give exponentially more loot the more cargo space you have. So as Garm said, a well rounded vessel may be the best way to protect yourself and get a fair amount of booty. While a large trading vessel will allow you to get the most booty, it is more susceptible to being taken by the enemy. I missed the fort questions... Ok, so you do technically have to have a small fort license before you buy a medium fort license, and so on. I think in the cases of forts, we might make an exception for having a MOC for the lower level -- although it would be cool to see the evolution of the fort from small to Royal, it may be impractical. We will talk it over among leadership and decide.

The Empire of Oleon: Sign-up and Discussion
SkaForHire replied to Sebeus I's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
DLL gave a great write up here. Every nation has trade, it is just geared a different way. As for looking down on traders, historically this is exactly what happened at the end of the Medieval period, traders became wealthy enough to challenge the aristocracy, and eventually the kings find this out and start granting titles to merchants and the rich rather than the hereditary bloodlines. This, during the renaissance is sometimes referred to the new nationalism. It is one of the reasons why the major kings came to power, starting with John 1 of Portugal, who overthrew the limitations of the aristocracy by building a professional army with the money of the trading houses that backed him. Aragon and Castile somewhat followed suit, and eventually France. England's monarchy was able to build strength, but eventually checked by the Parliament, which of course, started as the aristocracy only. The "new nationalist" countries, with their stronger monarchs ended up dominating Europe, and still exist for the most part today. Anyway, Olean could definitely be a few steps behind the other powers of the Peninsula -- their Aristocracy still holds a lot of power, and looks at the threat that a rich merchant may bring to their power, as they have seen it already happen in Eslandola. -
All you have to do to join is make a sig fig and post it in the faction's thread you decided to join. The advanced rules are for if you want to play the game component. Nobody is required to play the game, it just adds to the atmosphere and setting. In fact, I suggest to anyone who is confused to just read the history and the faction pages, and just join the faction they prefer. You can pick up the game mechanics (if you want) as you go along. Plus, even if you don't play the game side of things, you are still helping create stories and making builds that go in our community's world. Then, if you want to do some of the "game" stuff later, you can just start doing it when you are comfortable.

That post with the examples from LEGO sets was done before I changed the ship rankings a little bit, but should be taken as approximations. I feel as if the IFS was a little under powered how LEGO outfitted it... Also, you would pretty much have to double the cannon (or at least arm both sides) of each set to make them get more in line with the ship list. Overall, when you are MOCing vessels, you should use those rankings as guidelines, but we are not going to hold anyone strictly to 12 guns = this type, 18 = that type, etc... What Maxim had asked was if he could use a 50 gun ship for his free license, which has to be a class 1 or 2 vessel, 50 guns is just way too far out of the scope of a class 1 or 2 for us to accept as the MOC for that licensed ship. So if you are making a ship with 12 guns total (6 a side?) It falls nicely with something up to at least a gun rating of 4, you could stretch it to 5 with a few small guns up top. (We don't even have a ship on the list with 5 yet, so that wouldn't be important.) I *think* that I may have to add a "refitting" option, where you can refit your previous model and add some guns etc... to raise to a larger license for a smaller portion of the fee. (you would cancel the old license in doing so) True, I feel that a lot more "long guns" and some shorts on the top deck on a few of the ships would be possible.

Well, to be honest, the largest class 5 only has a gun rating of four, so I wouldn't imagine over 20 "large" guns on a "Class 5 Heavy A" vessel. We have not made Class 6 - 10 yet, because we figure that it would take a little bit for people to get up to buying licenses for the biggest ships already. However, you could still build the ship and not register it until you have enough money for a Class (9ish?) ship. You wouldn't be able to use it in the MRCA for a bit... but you could also register a few smaller vessels in the meantime. The largest "free ship" (Class 1 or 2) is probably not going to have more than 10 large guns, and that might be pushing it.

Kai is correct, no need to license free builds, and the "free" license is any class 1 or 2 vessel. You can even "UN-license" your only vessel if you want a different "free" license. This was put in here so everybody could participate quickly in the raiding / trading game.

WR = Well Rounded - IE: some offense, some defense, decent sailing for that class, and some cargo space. You can casually participate in the EGS. If you don't care about keeping up on the "score board." That is no problem, you may want to use your DBs (gold) later on, so playing doesn't hurt you in any way. Whereas we may recognize monthly who made the most DBs or currently has the most DBs, that should not impact your participation at all, unless your motivation to participate was to be at the top of the leader boards! There will be stuff to do with DBs in each faction, such as buying positions. I suspect that there will be people who will try to keep at the top, but the majority of builders will probably move at their own pace and establish their own trading / raiding / plantation empire in their own time.

Yes, and Yes. Absolutely, although characters may have a problem following that religion in Oleon, in Corrington we only care about efficacy, do your religion on your own time, we don't care. Eslandola only cares about money, and will probably applaud if your religion tithes well... haha. But yes, this is an open ended world, do what you want with religion. Also, I guess I never posted this, but with the ship registering system, you could use deck vigs -- I mean it should look proportionate enough that when whoever is going through the licenses at the end of the month check it they can say "yep, that looks about right" If we feel that there is a severe under-representation, we may ask for improvements or a downgrade of the license to a smaller vessel.
