BoBS Needs your help brainstorming ship types!

This is very similar to what I am doing, I think it provides for the most possibilities when building. -
BoBS Needs your help brainstorming ship types!
SkaForHire replied to SkaForHire's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
In general its going to be all dice rolling -- there may be more battles than one thinks.... but I don't want to give away why, because we don't plan to launch with this system at start, it will come shortly afterwards. (Think of it as something to do after everyone puts up their first adventures in a new world) I am familiar with the pirates constructable card came from about 8 or 9 years ago we played it for a little bit. I had kind of forgotten about it! we probably can't get away with just taking those rules, but some of the concepts are worth thinking about. We cant do stud or hull pieces because in some cases Microbuilds will be acceptable. What I am looking at is a series of classes that a builder can choose to build and represent, and kind of like Kurigan said, there were many different shapes and sizes that would fit one "class" of ship. We are trying to keep it as open as possible to build whatever you would like to build. This will all make more sense soon... Perhaps this thread was a bad idea... lol -

No, thank you for this! I should probably state my intentions a little clearer, I actually know a lot about vessels during the Age of Sail, my research focus is more post 1750 though, but still, I have a good idea of most of what I am asking for and understand the very complicated factoring that goes into watercraft during this period. As you said, it is what you did with the vessel that mattered. It came down to design and crewing at times, but most ships of similar build could have drastic difference in characteristics. Although I will say that I had never thought about that 20 gun rule, but as I look back it makes total sense, did you pick that up from a source, or is that your own deduction? I would like to read up on any strategy that might have been written about this... Anyway - so why did I set up this thread? Because I was looking for the perception of ships that the board has. What people might want to see in the game system that we are putting together. Also, it was a way to hype BoBS and let people start having a hand in it. As you said, games based on the age of sail rarely work well. Even in our game system here, the differences between ships are not going to be wide enough where the reality of a cog v. a ship of the line will be evident. In order to keep the game portion of the project balanced, a stat system will not have the proper range to replicate this. Although an 84 gun SOTL is most likely ALWAYS going to win against a 6 gun cog of the discovery era in the game mechanics (which are dice and formula based). Again, I am looking for perceptions here so that I include enough diversity in the initial list of ship types that one can buy and use in the system. But, I really like that you took the time to set this conversation on a realistic footing. -

Agreed I am looking for real ship types, but I appreciate the made up ones -- I should have clarified this. I am looking for things such as cog, sloop, war sloop, brig, snow, frigate, ship of the line. -
I am putting together a list of ship types for our new and upcoming pirates project, Brethren of the Brick Seas. I thought that I might get some help from the general population while compiling this list and rating features of different types of vessels. So, I am calling out to all your hard-nosed age of sail lovers to help me have the most complete list possible. For each type of vessel, please give me the following: name of type, general size, crew size, general armament (if any), number of masts, speed, culture it belongs to, any special features of this type of vessel, and if possible a picture of a MOC that represents this style.

I am in agreement, that I thought Cat C was more of a group effort... so much was put into that by everyone, it was hard to say any one person was worth more than another... and that was one of the reasons for having personal ranking systems to complete for. I agree, there are some changes I would make if we do this type of war again, but I don't think we will see it until the next book if we do so. I believe this book will end with the Nocturnus Civil War, and then there are some ideas brewing what is in store for the next chapter. We have a surprise interlude challenge coming up before that last book though, so be prepared! (No, unfortunately it is not a LOR / GOH crossover, those talks didn't seem to even begin) I will make a more official announcement, but yes it is. It is our first post-challenge guild challenge. I am going to see about maybe attaching a small prize like a tag to the winning entry. Also, it does not have to be a sig-fig.- 272 replies

Fifth Quarter Free Build Registration -- yeah I know, this book is taking too long, we now have 5 quarters of free building!) November 1st, 2015 to May 1st, 2016 (Book II, Quarter 4) What is this thread? This is the thread where YOU register your free build if you wish it to be scored for your guild. Why are you doing this to us? Despite Rogueang’s wonderful MOC index, the guilds project has become quite large. The core leaders feel that we need a self-indexing mechanism that will allow us to grade free builds more efficiently. This is what we have come up with. What do I need to do? Just simply write the following information In a NEW post: Name of Moc with link to the thread | Name of Builder | Guild you belong to IE: Obsidian Spike |ZCerberus | Nocturnus Do not write anything else. What counts as a “Free Build?” Great question! Any GOH build that was not entered in one of the official main challenges. All free builds must have their own thread, and there must be a link to that thread provided here. Do not comment on builds in this thread, please do that on the MOC’s own thread. Can I just post in my guild thread and leave it at that? Whereas you are welcome to do so, if the build does not make it into the index , it will not be scored. Can I put up an entry for another guild member's build? If that builder has disappeared and we are getting near the deadline, this would be allowed. Past registrations: Quarter 1 Quarter 2 Quarter 3 Quarter 4

SkaForHire replied to SkaForHire's topic in Guilds of Historica
Yes, I fixed that typo. Each build was scored, highest score won. All build scores of the faction were averaged, highest adjusted average was the winning faction. I say adjusted average, because the HC actually had higher averages in all three categories, but because they had so few builds comparatively, they received a slight penalty. For everyone but the HC, those were already announced -- didn't you win your faction, Third Centurion? In the works. True, but Ulandus had a slightly higher average in both categories.- 272 replies

Book II, Chal IV - Kaliphlin Civil War (Results Posted)

Results of the Kaliphlin Civil War (Challenge IV) The war was fought at a blistering pace, and I expect all the hard work that went into Challenge C left many people unable to muster up entries for the other three categories, but we still had some GREAT entries. So, below are the individual winners of each category and the victorious side. After which is an epilogue. Challenge A: Weight 20% Champion: MKJoshA Winning Faction: Ulandus Challenge B: Weight 20% Champion: MassEditor Winning Faction: Ulandus Challenge C: Weight 45% Winning Faction: Desert King Challenge D: Weight 15% Champion: DeGothia Winning Faction: High Council Final Score: 1) Desert King 45% 2) Ulandus 40% 3) High Council: 15% So what does this mean? War is messy, and rarely there is a clear cut winner. We can see the same is here. The Desert King’s forces have shown prowess on the Battle Field, the legions of Ulandus have fought valiantly, and the High Council has scrambled to keep control of what it can. Like Nocturnus, Kaliphlin still boils over. As long as there is a Desert King and a separate High Council, it is unlikely that there will be true peace. With First Centurion still banished to another plane of existence, the Isle of Gorr remains a holdout for Ulandus supporters. There is also a underground resistance on Ulandus proper. The High Council sits in the West, and with many of Nocturnus’ warriors heading home for their second Civil War in two years, the Desert King has lost most of his grip on the Wither Woods and beyond. Rumors of negotiation between what’s left of the Ulandians and the High Council still swell, but it is a well-known fact that during the active portion of the war the two sides could never come to an agreement. The capital has sustained heavy damage, and the Desert King has kept his seat of power at Sultan’s Gate. For now it seems his forces are willing to let things stand as they are. He does not seem interested in gaining a navy to Assault Gorr or Esterbroke, or even marching back to the Witherwoods. This could prove fatal if his enemies can lick their wounds. But perhaps the Desert King knows something that the common man does not, perhaps he is sparing his enemies so he may unite them for a greater cause? There is much more chaos in this world than just Kaliphlin. Cedrica still does not have a King, and it seems that there is only one man powerful enough to take the throne in all of historica… Previous Epilogue: Heralds of the Desert King has been to every town save those of Esterbroke and Gorr, where the DK's influence waned significantly after the unofficial armistice caused by the supposed death of First Centurion and the taking of Petraea. The message is clear. "Loyal soldiers of the Pharaoh must return to Sultan's Gate and prepare for the next revealing of prophecy for the Great War. All Noble subjects of Kaliphlin who fought against the One True King shall be forgiven for their transgressions if they send a troop of warriors in time for the prophecy's revealing on December 1st. Those who do not send their good will, will be made to heel in good time." It is suspected that the alliance between the Desert King and the united rebel forces of Nocturnus will come to fruition, as he sets his troops against the Spire in the months to come. The present state of Kaliphlin is in flux. It takes money, men, and will to wage a war; all of which have been spent over the last year. As fall turns to winter, the last of the very few farmers return to their much destroyed fields to bring in a possible harvest, and to avoid starvation throughout the Guild. Soldiers that have survived take temporary leave, as few armies are still standing during the lull. Mercenaries have moved on, many traveling east in hopes to find new sources of coin. The only occupied cities are those of Ulandus, where the DK's main regiments still hold his hated enemy's high seat. Matters of administration are shaky at best, as the West turns to a new Council, the East has mostly pledged to the Desert King, and Gorr keeps hope that First Centurion will return to liberate his lands. On Esterbroke, Petera MacLean has completed a cleansing of Desert King influence by killing all the traitors of the island and firmly asserting Council control of the island. Refugees of the middle-lands of the guild board GEAR ships and sail to the island, thus making it impossible for the Desert King to seed the island to his Avalonian allies. One thing is clear, Kaliphlin has changed, A clear leader has not emerged, and the Desert King's grip on the guild is tenuous at best. Can he become beloved? Will the First Centurion return? Will a High Council Member elevate to sovereign to reunite and rebuild the guild?- 272 replies

Book II - Kaliphlin: Guild sign-up and Discussion

THanks everyone. Just a clarification, I am just adding metadata to the pictures, part of that data is your name -- (i will use your board aliases) I was just looking for more images from other "creators" because it would have looked weird if all the creator fields said my name! That is why I reached out to find pictures that were not mine. -

Hey, weird question for you all. I am doing a project for one of my library classes that needs digital images (i only need ten) And I thought it would be fun to put together a collection of Kaliphlin build pictures. In the end they go into a digital archive database. I just wanted to see if I could obtain permission from some of you to use your images in this pretend archive site I have to make. I will probably delete it after it is graded, but I just need to make sure I have permission from you all that don't mind me using your pics. So anyone who is OK with me borrowing their images for this project, please let me know. I will share the project here (super boring metadata coding, and not advanced as flickr....) before I delete it. -

They are currently reconciled, as Petera has moved to Gearsport on Esterbroke and taken up lordship of that city, while Dugal is back in charge at Eastgate. Both are supporters of the Council in Exile, and Barqa still stands as the temporary capital for that faction, although the DK owns pretty much everything that is not in the Southern Witherwoods, Esterbroke, or on the coast. (minus Gorr which is still loyal to Ulandus) -

I am not sure when we will be able to announce them. For now, it seems as if the DK is in control of most of the guild, with heavy resistance still following. DK troops infiltrated much of Kaliphlin, and the majority of it is technically under his control. The will to fight has been taken from the people, and therefore, DK for all intents and purposes has seemed to be the victor. -
I know, I was just addressing the complicated part, and not trying to pick on you about it! The problem is, just what you have mentioned about GOH will happen here as well, once we get about a year in, it will be the same complex storylines and background that were weaved in the first book of GOH... As for the war challenge, these rules are nothing like that, I promise. Although we may do a war challenge in the future, I am not throwing in grids or anything right now! I would never put that in as a permanent feature, you are right, people were glad to be done at the end. The "complex" rules are the equivalent of the AOM or UoP activities really. I am not speaking directly at you here, just addressing stuff, I don't want anyone to feel like I am lashing out here. Basically, what I would like to see in place by the time we launch it (soon hopefully) is a small economic system (something to do with your gold), a conflict resolution set of rules (something GOH does not have) and a hint towards the other building activities that will come later (the complex rules, which involve building one's own colony / ships / etc... and earning gold in larger numbers rather than just "free build" gold)
-
Not to pick on Milo here, but I just wanted to address something, because this can relate here as well. I really think this is a common misconception of GOH. There are almost no rules in GOH. Rule one) You only are in one guild. Rule Two) don't kill others' sigfigs Rule three) don't go nuts with technology Rule four)play nice with others . There is no game mechanic at all in GOH, and the only thing resembling such is the very loose use of gold, which has not been transferred into much meaning in Book 2. Book One worked that whichever guild had the most gold at the end of six challenges would be the winner, that was it. Now in the last challenge I introduced a temporary game for the Kaliphlin Civil War. But that is no longer active, so we are back to just no rules. As it bounces back here, I think the idea amongst those in charge was that there would be some sort of game, something to keep everything moving. (If you are not familiar, GOH gets stale every couple months between challenges, there isn't enough to do once people have done all the mini challenges) I think the difference is between a light mechanic and a more intensive game mechanic. The problem with the later is it requires more work on the part of faction leaders. I understand that some people don't necessarily want to play a game, which is OK, the "rule set" includes the version where you play like GOH. The same exact rules I mentioned above, extremely simple. Nobody has to play the advanced game. We could launch it tomorow if the maps and stories were done. However, we also decided sometime last year that we wanted to make sure that a good project was in place with the building blocks to continue adding more game elements before we launched. So there should be something for everyone, those who want to treat it like a building war and strategy game and those who want to make it like GOH, an open ended story without any actual restrictions other than you can't switch sides (often). This isn't a criticism of those who voted to have a simple set, just defining what simple set entails -- as it will have some sort of game mechanic. Those of you who don't want to participate in that part of BoBS can still have a lot of fun in the project doing other things. From what we have brainstormed, the actual major challenges would not have anything to do with the game part, they would be mostly building / story challenges.

That may not have been the best description. Raiding and sacking is a huge part of the advanced rules. But... there is only one way to say that, and there are many other things that happened during the age of sail that I listed. Don't forget, without those colonies, colonists, and merchants, pirates are a bit up a creek. No one to raid = no food, gold, booze, or really point of being. It would be pretty boring if we all were cruising around in pirate ships and no on played the other end of the stick... The reason why creating one's own colony is appealing is that I think most people will start making some land builds, because you can only depict a sea battle so many ways in a row before it gets boring. Also, don't forget that a pirate's life was spent the majority of the time on land, in contrast to a naval seaman.
-
This is why I posted the poll, I had written some pretty in depth and interesting rules that create an economy, which in turn created the scoring system, etc... I think they are a pretty fun game in the long run... but... I didn't want to spend another ten hours writing rules we aren't going to use. From the looks of the early poll, this may not be what people want.

Hello everyone, I am trying to hammer out the last of a working draft of the BoBS system this week. I have a question for you all though as I go through this. I spent a few hours making a very detailed system of property owning, squatting, raiding, trading, and other mechanisms, but it would take a little while to read and understand. In this version there is an economic engine that allows players to achieve new goals, new rights, and even their own colonies. It is a bit complex though. We also have a draft of basic economic rules without the property owning, raiding, or other ways to obtain gold other than simple free builds and challenge builds (and duels) . I think it is almost ready to use, but makes the project much more like Guilds of Historica than something entirely new. So, my question to you all is which would you rather see? A) A complex system from the start that will take some time to get used to B) A simple system, with basic gold gathering objectives, but not much depth beyond that. C) A tiered system, we start with the simple system, and every few months lay down another part of the rules scheme to make the game more complex over time. The disadvantage here is to newer players who start in the more complicated scheme later on after the veterans know it like the back of their hand. The other drawback is some of the features will not be available for some time. EDIT: I should mention that the whole system is designed that a builder could "play" outside the game mechanism if they wished. Their team would still receives points and gold for their builds, but they are not kept track of (or limited) by the game system with points and scores. They also can't achieve some of the achievements and positions in the game, but they are not limited as much by the game's currency, gold.
