Purism
z3_2drive replied to Erik Leppen's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Up until my large scale RC models, I was purist simply because I did not have the means to acquire or make custom parts, I maybe cut an axle once or twice, and it always made me feel bad afterwards. It didn't feel genuine. I built with what I had and made the most of it. A lot of my Lego creativity was cultivated in that period. Since then, my collection increased dramatically, and I started to take on larger ideas. I found that I was always drawn towards vehicles, and making them as realistic and practical as possible. This quickly lead to my conclusion that there is a clear limit to what Lego parts can handle, and I danced around that limit for quite some time - I still do today. When I began my series of large scale RC vehicles, there were many prototypes created that simply ate up Lego pieces during operation even after dozens of purist re-designs. I decided, for the sake of the pieces, to look towards custom batteries, electronics, modded pneumatic suspension, 3D printed parts, etc. I was simply bored with playing around at the limit of purist design, since my concerns have always been for high performance practical operation. Still, I only use it where I know purist solutions will not satisfy the goals. In a future project, I will abandon buggy motors and use some hobby grade motor. Why? Because I successfully completed 5 iterations of a vehicle using 4 buggy motors, and I've exhausted all the options, all the techniques, and I seek better performance. Why not quit Lego and move on to hobby RC if I care more about performance than these perceived 'rules'? Because Lego is still cheaper, allows for modular, re-usable construction, and provides a challenge given the weaknesses of plastic. But most of all, it's my hobby and I do as I please. A lot of people enjoy my creations, but I know there are some that don't count my work as legitimate. So be it, I'm doing it for myself, I simply share it to get feedback or to help others attempting similar projects. I respect purists, though. We're all having fun in the same hobby, after all.- 179 replies

Lack of time for me during a big move. But it was also paired with lack of resources for a new idea. But now that it's been almost a year, I'm ready to get back into it and I'm in a better position to obtain the resources I need to undertake a new project(s?). It will be difficult to find time during university to build, but my imagination is fresh.

Ok, so there is only one reduction before the differential. Is the gear on the motor a plastic Lego gear (12t double-bevel), or metal with unique tooth count? And the gear driving the differential is a plastic 12t? or some custom stronger piece? One more thing , are those 'shocks' on the front fluid filled or just sprung? I can't wait to see the video, I'm trying to absorb as much detail as I can because I want to attempt a similar project

Another great project, glad to see it turned out successful. I only have two questions, the screws holding the front wishbones to the chassis, they screw directly into Lego pins? Seems quite snug. My second question is what size bearings did you use? Do they just fit between a width of two studs? I know you have a 3D printed differential frame piece that can hold bearings, but what about the other parts of the drivetrain, how are they braced if you use bearings on every contact point?

Man that 42069 looked very beat up. I wonder if someone dropped it -

I'm just disappointed that they didn't showcase functions. If that 42069 has a gearbox I'm sure it'll gain a lot of fans. -

After looking at more videos of the 42069, I'm interested in the suspension. I didn't spot any torque tubes, it looks like a proper live axle, with 2 5L Steering Arms with Ball joint socket per axle, and what looks like 9L links on the front suspension. It is 4WD with CV joints visible in the rear driveshaft. This model looks like it will be fun to modify. If it's not too expensive I might pick this one up out of the bunch. EDIT: Didn't see saberwing's analysis last page. To add some more info, the shocks are 6.5L, with hard yellow versions in the rear, but the front looks like the soft variant. Probably just an anomaly for the show model. In Saber's pic, unless my eyes are deceiving me, there seems to be a visible red 16t clutch gear, and some more gears under and behind the seat to indicate a working gearbox. We shall see if it is a true gearbox or a function selector. Hopefully the former. -

The only thing I'm not liking is the fake representation of a shock absorber in the wheel well of the purple all terrain truck. If you Include such an obvious detail why not make it a function... EDIT: Nevermind, after looking at the higher res box art, there are small 6.5 shocks, the two large pieces in front are for extra detail/display. -
Plans for the next couple months: After the moving process is settled, I'm bringing my collection back out, and I will buy a high quality 3D printer. My next MOC will be the ultimate Lego RC car-custom electronics, 3D printed wheel hub inserts compatible with Hobby RC wheels, non Lego motor, aluminum beams in the frame, possibly a third party servo, realistic suspension, and if all goes well, I'll go for a first attempt at full scale bodywork that will hopefully look half decent.
-
Also agree that the red version looks better. The lines in the bodywork are lost in the all black version, however that comparison to 8880 was nice

Reading this post makes me miss my collection so much...just a few more weeks and I'll be back to building, your builds have been great motivation and proof that taking on a project with non Lego motors will be worth the effort. I didn't have much luck with effe's custom hubs, I think that was because I didn't polish them enough before connecting them. Also I am having trouble deciding which direction to take with a future build: 1) Use printed hubs and deal with unavoidable slack, but solve as much as I can with geometry as porky suggested^ 2) Use large turntables as wheel hubs somehow, and connect Non-Lego wheels.

Nice job! I love the rotating function, would be a great piece to sit on a desk even if you don't use it

Thought this video was great, also knew what to expect going into this thread Yes, true non-modified Lego controlled flight has been proven impossible, but it's always nice seeing people use creative ideas to build flying craft using the least amount of non Lego pieces possible. The 'why do people do this' mindset is incredibly boring. Same goes for road vehicles, you won't see a practical 100% Lego car going more than 20-30 kph, there will always be some sort of modification or negative side effect involved. I pushed my personal limits with this build: It was well received, but I guess that is because the only modifications were in the running gear components and power supply/control - things that simply were not up to the task in their non-modified versions, which you could attach the same label to things like BuWizz or S-brick, and I never claimed it as 100% Lego. Was it purist? No. Does that mean I shouldn't have pursued it? Hell no. to these guys.

[WIP] Megacar
z3_2drive replied to VKTechnic's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
As far as building cars, i usually go by the 3 wheel rule for length (distance between edges of front and rear wheel being 3 wheel diameters apart) it looks most normal, and for width, totally depending on what kind of car you have in mind, more flexible. Good luck with the rest of the build! -

Have the self control to not go back until you feel confident enough to be mature and calm, it doesn't have to end abruptly and forever.
