[MOC]Tow Truck
Thirdwigg replied to legosamigos's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Great job. I love all the features, and the scales works well with other models you have. It reminds me of your Container Truck from a while back. Well done. -

Thirdwigg's MOCs
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I started another car recently; this one based on the Ferrari 333 SP. This WIP uses pushrod type suspension, but I don't like it. After fooling around with it, basic shocks mounted to the A-arm and frame work with more crispness, are just as low in mounting, and provide a stiffer setup. Is model accuracy really worth it? -
MOC methodology
Thirdwigg replied to niknarjc's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I use a very similar process as @Cumulonimbus. Idea: I pick something to model, or and idea that I want to work on. I make some sketches of placement of majors sections, and of ideas for difficult parts in a small notebook I keep with me (it's neat to look back on all the ideas I wrote down, and see how they were finalized). Proof of concept: I work in real bricks, and work out some tricky details early. Placement: I build a rough chassis in real bricks with all the hard parts placed, and then I start running axles, gears, and gearboxes. Rebuild: I then rebuild a second model coping the first, with better structures, correct colors, and necessary improvements. Sometimes a MOC takes two or three rebuilds. Finishing: here I work on visuals, and other final steps. The note of building outside-in and inside-out is a great vocabulary for a building process, and I suspect many of us could fit into these two methods. I generally build outside-in as many of my MOCs are determined by a scale, but find inside-out very liberating. My ATS and Typhoon were built outside-in, and the OCTAN Air Racer and OCTAN F1 were built inside-out. I guess I use both styles, and find myself alternating between both in many of my MOCs depending on what I find more stimulating at the time. I find LDraw/LDD tedious, though I could see how it would make my building more efficient. -

I haven't noticed this. Now I have some things to test when I get home. -
[MOC] OCTAN Air Racer
Thirdwigg replied to Thirdwigg's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks all for your comments. The instructions are now on brickshelf. Someone else should make one in a different color (Blacktron theme maybe), and we can have a race. -
Sometimes you find a theme that you like, so you stick with it. Here is my next MOC, the OCTAN Air Racer. Much more at thirdwigg.com, and instructions are at Brickshelf.com once moderated. The MOC features: Working 8 cylinder Radial Engine Working joystick Dual left and right ailerons Working elevator Retractable landing gear Opening cockpit With the gear down. The radial is more like two boxers perpendicularly connected. A little video. Enjoy and happy building.

Great MOC. It's great to see the LEGO community is following the auto industry towards hybridization. Next we might start seeing all electric LEGO MOCS. I don't miss the brakes or the gearbox. -
Great review. It seems like the rubber connectors over the rear axles were used to allow for the fore/aft flex of the steering arms as they move through their travel. Since the two rear axles are connected together something had to allow for this flex.

Very cool. Nice use of the 11th Street Bridge for the film. Can we get some more pictures of the internals?

Thanks all, I tried to cram as many functions in this MOC as I could. I appreciate the kind comments.
