[SR-FB (2)] House of Pleasure in Bastion
Gideon replied to Bart's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Very suitable establishment in that town Nice busy atmosphere with all the minifigs. My favorite detail is that balconette, simple but functional design I don't think this type of build should be a problem here as it is an AFOL forum. Besides, no one complains about death, dismemberment and gore in general in builds here? -
Very good introduction and nicely illustrated

Very nice roof! I also like the overall shape of the building a lot You don't have to tell a Swede about the lighting conditions this time of year... we almost don't have sunlight at this time And I almost always take my pics around or after midnight when the rest of the family is asleep so I really have that problem all year round... My solution since a long time has been to use a flash for all my Lego photography. What I never do however is point it straight at the MOC, usually I bounce it off the white roof to get a nice soft ambient light for the MOCs. If you point the flash directly at the MOC you get nasty reflections and shadows... If you don't have a camera which supports an external flash, a couple of ordinary bulbs with the same color temperature plus a tripod (to enable long exposures) works as well. In the first pic you managed to create quite nice dramatic lighting when you didn't use the flash Maybe try to build on your lighting setup based on that?

[ESL] The Knight of Stedor - 6 gun Cutter
Gideon replied to Maxim I's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Nice little ship! Looks like a trader who can defend himself a bit at least But would the ship not lean to the side if all guns were pointing there at the same time...? Is this built to be licensed in the EGS? Which category would that be in that case? I guess it is something of this size that I should attempt first before doing too many mistakes on a bigger one? Regarding the photography, I think it looks like you had a tad too litte light for that iPhone camera as the noise levels are quite high. I also think the white-balance in the first pic is off compared to the later ones as the colors in that one is more yellowish than in the later ones. Yes, I'm getting boring but at least at the start of BoBS I'm almost now naming myself the photography critic(/nit-picker?) since it does soo much to a MOC to be presented properly and it doesn't take that much more time to do it right. I'm also not experienced enough in ship-MOCing to give any criticism there at all -
Nice interior, I especially like the floor technique, the wall texturing and the stair. You are really fast in producing new builds! I agree, at least the first two are not "keepers" in my opinion due to the technical errors (camera shake in #1 and missed focus in #2). A short depth of field is great for emphasizing a single minifig, but the focus must be dead on the minifig's face in order for it to work.

Nice roof! The walls look like they are built from parts of previous structures, when masonry bricks of different colors are used. I guess that fits quite well with a settlement in the "old world"

[SR - CH 1 - Cat B] Captain Rodsh found land
Gideon replied to Bart's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Water and some mild dish soap can work if the dust is too stuck (let it soak for a while), but avoid using a too hard brush as it will scratch the bricks. (I used a toothbrush once on some plates = Bad idea!) It is easier to get the lighting right using diffuse light coming from above and behind rather than sharp light coming from the front or sides. So play around with the lighting and find the setup which gives you the best pics -

I don't think the beach is too flat either, the topology looks very good to me The problem with haze I'm referring to is that in the first two pictures, the rightmost side of the build (particularly the green bush and also the palm tree in the second) looks like there is a mist in front of them. I think that is caused by that the bright light from the illuminated background causes unwanted reflections inside the optics of the camera. In the last picture where the light comes from the left instead, the green bush is sharp. (The only haze visible in that picture is around the sliver of the window visible in the top left corner, which doesn't hurt the picture. However that part outside the backdrop should have been cropped out of the picture imho.) Dusty bricks is another question, where I like to use compressed air to get the worst off at least -

Nice vegetation, especially on the side to the right A couple of suggestions for improvements: Mind the sides of the base if you intend to photograph it from there, having the ground hollow like in the last pic takes a lot away from the overall impression imho. It also looks like you get quite hazy pics (especially on the side towards the bright light or where there is most light on the background), is there a lot of dust on your front element of the camera or is it only a problem caused by a lot of bright light coming from an angle outside the actual picture? -
I've seen far, far worse Your backdrop for example is great! The reason I'm nagging every other one here about photography is that it makes such a huge difference in the presentation if the build is decently photographed. And the best thing is that a good backdrop and decent lighting (both which can be solved almost free or at a very modest cost) can be enough to make really great pictures with just about any camera. So many people just put the blame on their camera "my camera sucks" instead of trying to work with the gear they have. So I'm glad to hear what I perceive as an implicit wish to improve the photography skills...?

Ok, sorry about if my recruiting attempt was not obvious enough What about: You are very welcome to join GoH, please pick the Kaliphlin guild!! (To join you need to create a sigfig character and post it in one of the guilds' main threads, but after that we are not too hard on that the sigfig is used in every build unlike other similar "games" out there)

Isn't white fairly expensive in large quantities on BL? But maybe you get most of your bricks elsewhere?- 10 replies

Nice use of that Chima head

Very nice rigging, especially the climbing nets I'm starting to think that I really should get some of those white hull pieces for an Oleander ship sometime in the future

I hope those will be presented in their own threads as well so they can get the praise they deserve?

MAESTRO: an Eslandolan Trade Company
Gideon replied to Maxim I's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Great to see Stedor in the age it looks mostly suited for! (Btw, it was very nice to get to have a closer look at it in Skaerbaek in September!) An overview picture without the "real world" background would not hurt however? Your figbarfs would probably also be presented better if you took the pictures with the camera (or phone? ) further away, so that the figs in the background gets more in focus. On the other hand, if you want to emphasize the fig in front it looks very good to have the figs behind it out of focus -

Nice house, I like the swords above the door! Easily recognizeable as one of your builds btw, you must be one of EBs most frequent users of white bricks?- 10 replies

Exactly, and when you are forced to build more than one or two builds a month to keep up with the game it will scare a lot of us away from the game altogether. But I think there are several layers of BoBS as I've understood it so far, so I'm pretty hopeful that it will attract builders of different skill and time on their hands. My biggest fear is that there will be way more threads to read and comment than most of us can keep up with... There's always BrickLink if you're only after the minifigs I really hope most of this game stays open, since as soon as you move things into private channels you lose a lot of the community. My opinion is that private channels should only be used for short-time cooperation like specific collabs or maybe sides in a challenge IF there is to be some kind of coordinated action there, but not as a general way of running things.

Great statue! We don't see nearly enough of those in Historica... I'm impressed by the good shape you've managed to create with the limitiation of using so many gold pieces. Regarding the photography, I'm getting boring nowadays but I will keep commenting on that the white balance should have been adjusted better since the colors don't look right when the WB is off...

Great to see a nice use for that side of the turntables also! Nice fortification also, I particularly like how you've managed to integrate that octagonal roof piece so well.

Wow! That's a lot of medieval lego in one place! Some of my favourite parts in this build are the wooden roofs and the inside of the castle in general, as well as the windmill. The landscaping in general in this build is very nice and I especially like the shores. Several parts of this look like great MOCs in their own right and would merit their own threads. Are you keeping some of the buildings or other elements in this diorama still intact? What I however fail to see in your presentation is where this build is placed in the Guilds of Historica context? Is there a backstory in Historica tied to this...? Judging by the lion insignia it looks to have ties to Kaliphlin If you are not interested in participating in the "free-form role-playing game" of GoH and only want to post this as a MOC in it's own right, I think it would reside better in the historic themes forum (where it probably would get more views also) since this is just a subforum with builds sharing the common fantasy setting of Historica.

[ESL-Intro] The annual Fontonajo dinner
Gideon replied to Elostirion's topic in Brethren of the Brick Seas
Excellent minifigs and such an extravagant dining table! I also like the design of the chairs As I've also said at some other builds, overview shots look better if taken with the camera a bit further away from the build, to make the perspective less distorted. -
I also think the EGS is a good idea since it will encourage builders to flesh out the world nicely. I'm simply eager to use the lessons learned in other recent games here at EB to balance it better
