The LEGO Movie Sets News and Discussion
badbob001 replied to Itaria No Shintaku's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I'm going to guess that the box will highlight the 'boy' appeal for this set, which is the flower launcher and all those circular targets. That snail is so duplo. Now won't it be crazy if they actually have a set with some duplo pieces to correspond to a duplo scene in the movie? Seriously I suspect this line of sets will be all over the place in terms of weirdness and the only thing keeping it grounded are the well done minifigures.- 2,626 replies

I was wondering how the coffee cup in the trailer was made with real parts and now I know: it's a new mold. I guess we will need to buy the sets to get access to the Space guy and the Morgan Freeman character. I definitely need to get a set with WyldStyle's hoody. I wonder if the cop has both his bad and good face. The Taco Tuesday guy looks almost like a straight reissue Maraca Man, which is pretty unimaginative. Abraham Lincoln is cool... he can go vampire hunting. I really wished the cat lady had white hair. Oh, here's a pic of the uni-kitty set:

Just curious, but has any official LEGO stores ever closed?

I've noticed cracks in white bricks more often than with other colors. Coincidence or does the process of coloring the bricks white weaken it more than other colors?

The LEGO Movie Sets News and Discussion
badbob001 replied to Itaria No Shintaku's topic in Special LEGO Themes
I hope the her actual Wyldstyle minifigure has her raised collar as a separate piece and not have it be a printing. And I just realized that Emett's hair is not just the traditional male piece but has a tuft of hair sticking out a back corner. There is a new video for him as well:- 2,626 replies

How do you wash your LEGO... Seriously?
badbob001 replied to DrJB's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I just came across this project called Retr0Bright, which talks about restoring the color of ABS plastic via 'a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, a small amount of an “Oxy” laundry booster as a catalyst and a UV lamp'. Note that Retr0Bright is essentially a recipe and not a product you can simply purchase. -
I'm a little disappointed in that these sets seem far too simplified in design and realism compared to the Friends sets... feels like it's merely a step-up from Duplo. Cinderella's Castle looks too squat, especially if you want to compare it with the iconic Disney one. And her coach looks like a decorated box on wheels. Rapunzel's tower is also looking rather sad. They need to at least double the piece count to makes these a bit more interesting during the build. Please get the Friend's designers onto this theme. Then at least you are guaranteed to have bathrooms in each set.

How do you wash your LEGO... Seriously?
badbob001 replied to DrJB's topic in General LEGO Discussion
For the occasional stain or mark, I wet a folded paper towel and add some baking soda on it. Then gently rub the stain in a circular motion. The slight abrasiveness of the baking soda really helps remove marks such as crayons or markers. Also works great to remove crayon marks from walls. -
I just bought a used set and the pieces require more force to put together and there is a creaking sound in the process. This is especially the case with large or long plates. Does this indicate any specific type of environmental damage? The set should not be more than 6 years old. The plates seem to bend more easily than new plates so I'm not sure if this just from play or if it indicates some sort of deterioration. The white bricks don't show any apparent yellowing.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2014 Rumors & Discussion
badbob001 replied to just2good's topic in LEGO Licensed
It would be very interesting for LEGO to come out with a set that only has the two girls from the show and none of the turtles. I would certainly buy it because girl minifigures are usually the minority in anyone's collection. And I would love to own more of those scooters. -
A problem I see with submitting a theme with several sets is that you don't know if people are voting for the initial set or for the whole theme. If after the initial set no further sets in the theme are produced, then the people who voted for the theme would feel that their vote didn't really count. And the major problem with licensed creations is that you don't know if people are voting because they like the design or because they just like the source material. There is a difference between 'This is a really cool Ghostbuster set that I will buy.' and 'I would love for LEGO to license the Ghostbuster brand and see what they can do with it.' I suppose it comes down to what you expect from Cuusoo. A way to showcase the creativity of LEGO users? Or a suggestion box of what are the hottest trending brands that will sure to sell well in a short time?

Is your LEGO Room getting too cold?
badbob001 replied to splatman's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I thought this thread was going to be about being shun by the spouse or for being banished to the basement or shed. -
And regarding the complaints of LEGO changing the original design, I think LEGO still consults with the original designer during the process and tries to get at least some sort of blessing on the final design. Else we will have the designers blogging about how LEGO butchered their work and then use their 1% royalties to fund their hate campaign against Cuusoo and LEGO.

Maybe LEGO will use the exo-suit as basically a showcase kit on how to use non-traditional building methods to create super detailed robots. Almost like a mash-up of architecture studio and technic and creator. Maybe it'll find traction with bionicle fans that want to go to the next level. And it would be rather refreshing for a cuusoo project to be popular purely for its design and technique rather than for the popularity of the third-party brand it is based on (isn't the latter like most of the stuff on cuusoo?).

I entertained the idea that LEGO will come out with a LEGO store modular building since they are currently seeding the populace with the free LEGO employee minifig, but I kind of doubt it will happen. The LEGO store doesn't fit the 'era' of the current modular buildings and a standalone product will have less market potential. Certainly the arms will need to be re-designed since the current implementation has single-stud connections that will come apart if you try to pose it.
-
It's rather annoying that LEGO doesn't provide any direct reason why the projects were rejected. That said, the exo-suit looks rather cool. But after looking at all the grey from the BTTF set, I wish the exo-suit had a bit more color. I can imagine colorful armor pieces being attached to the suit like a merging of the minifig+bionicle universe. Since this is not a licensed set, I wonder if they will use a non-flesh colored minifigure (my preference).

I recently came out of my dark ages and wanted to start off slowly and concisely by just collecting minifigures. I always admired the modular building sets and thought they were too big of a jump for me at this point. But then news of this beautiful Parisian Restaurant comes out and even before I can even get the set, I already own much of the previous modular sets. Damn you LEGO, damn you.

For the promotional LEGO Movie poster sticker, do they provide you with one sticker or two? I believe for the in-box posters, two are provided so you can stick them to both sides of the window. If they only give you one, do they expect you to stick it over one side of an existing sticker? And regarding the 'unfinished' backsides of the roof, do you think this was just laziness / cost-cutting or was the roof designed to be a facade? I don't believe the Hollywood Chinese Theatre has a facade roof but perhaps there are other real-world examples that do. Are they any examples of someone trying to 'finish' the roof?

Experience sourcing parts for out-of-production sets?
badbob001 replied to badbob001's topic in General LEGO Discussion
After putting the inventory of some sets into my wanted list, viewing the first local shop with the most unique lots, and putting only the first page (of 5) of items into my cart: over $600. Yeah, this method is not going to work without a fight. -
Experience sourcing parts for out-of-production sets?
badbob001 replied to badbob001's topic in General LEGO Discussion
Thanks for the link! It looks like it will either be quick and expensive (assuming you can avoid the scams, secret re-builds with substituted parts, and sun-bleached sets) or be a laborious multi-month/year scavenger hunt. -
How common is it for people to try to source new parts to recreate a set that is no longer in production as an alternative from buying used but expensive originals? Is it even a practical (and non-suicidal) process? I'm thinking about this for out of production sets such as the Cafe Corner or Green Grocer since used originals seem rather expensive. To get an idea of how much it would cost to source the parts individually, I load up a set's inventory into the BrickStore app (note that shipping and extra charges are not factored in). If I set the part prices to their 6-month average, the total price is close to some of the current market prices. If I set the prices to their minimum, then the total price is much better at about 3 times lower, but I'm extremely skeptical this unicorn can be captured. If I were to attempt this, should I expect prices to be closer to the Average? If that is the case, I may just look to purchase whole sets than stress myself managing thousands of parts from many many vendors. Unless someone can lend me some time on a supercomputer farm running the Bricklink cost minimizer program.

When did LEGO catalogs in sets disappear?
badbob001 replied to badbob001's topic in General LEGO Discussion
This may be something that may never happen, but it would be sad if one day they no longer included the printed manuals but have you access the manual electronically. -
