Oh, I see, I don't quite remember the details when I did this, whether it took longer for some motors (maybe it did now that you say), but now as you describe it, it does sound like it was doing something else as well. Maybe you could look in other threads about dismantling motors to understand what's inside, whether there's some electronic part that might have updatable firmware.

What makes you think that "updating the motors" and "calibrating the zero point" are two different things? I actually thought updating just means calibrating the zero point. When I bought the set and built the official models, I realized that one of the motors was quite visibly off center (3-4 degrees). I wrote to Lego customer support about it, they asked me to take a video about the faulty motor, and after confirmation they said they'd send a new one, and I don't have to send them back the faulty one. In the meantime, I was informed that there's this update thing in the app, and tried it and it fixed the calibration of the faulty motor. At the same time I received the new one as well, so now I have 5 correctly working ones :)

It sounds interesting indeed. So basically it's not given what you need to change, chassis or bodywork, but you'd have to build two versions of the same car. -
[MOC] MAN 8×8 Off-road RV

These look beautiful, the DBG color just nails it :) I like both the motorcycle and the roof functionality. The interior details are cool! I love the tires on the MAN, what are they? What size? Around 68mm? They seem to be on standard lego rims, right? Is it a good fit? Do you have a link to buy them? :)- 17 replies

Sure, if you'd buy the set for the wheels and some other parts, then it's a nice addition. But I am hoping that these wheels will appear in some Technic set as well.. Though it would be really nice if the thinner version came back..- 5,513 replies

I have been looking into this problem lately. It seems they don't even need to produce it, it's already out there. Both Xbox Series and PS5 controllers support BLE, and I also believe they probably communicate through a standard HID protocol. Furthermore, it seems that the Buwizz unit should be able to connect to them directly through standard BLE connection. All that is required is FW support for it. Unfortunately, the Buwizz FW is not in really good shape and does not seem to be evolving too much.. However, configuration of the controls would still require connecting to the Buwizz unit from the mobile app first, but that's no big deal I guess.

Generic Contest Discussion

If at some point in time the goal will be to move away from cars, I actually like these themes! Though I still haven't seen / participated in a car contest.. But if it's a modular vehicle, swappable bodywork is not the most interesting option for me; that means we have to build the functional part once, and the non-functional twice. It would be more interesting to swap the chassis then :) Something like a stock vs off-road version with the same body. How about that? -

Is this still aimed to be a Technic contest? What are the typical technical / functional aspects of space police models??? Or is it just that my imagination is not vivid enough? I haven't even seen any non-space related technic police models.. -

That's nice :) But I'd bet those are just LBG, why would they recolor it to DBG for this (or for any other) set? It's just the shadow on the image..- 5,513 replies

This looks very nice, so clean compared to the official one, and also looks smaller (cannot judge well, is that right?). It's a good example of when less is more :) The functionality also seems to be good, I like how the motor is integrated into the tail section, and that you managed to incorporate the gearbox without blowing up the upper part or taking the whole rear section. Good job!

Yes, that one. I used this configuration to bring out more travel and a lot of articulation from the small springs, with that axle construction it would not have been possible to connect the springs to the trailing arms that are also tilting on the turntable. Although it is possible to connect the springs close to the pivot point to allow longer travel, but then the springs become too soft under the weight of such a big model. With such pushrod routing, the springs are not in the way of articulation, but can have optimal springiness as well.

Thanks for posting! It’s so amazing to see all those beautiful and functional machines! Is there an online list of such events somewhere? I’d be interested in visiting some, but I never know about them..

Pybricks Q&A
gyenesvi replied to Pybricks's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Oh, I was looking for that kind of support as well, but didn't find it, was looking at the Support label that redirected me to GitHub.. -
I like such small builds, curious what you bring out of it :) Interesting suspension, I once made a similar one, but that didn't go all the way to the roof.. Indeed, it often takes a lot of time to reach a clean state! I fully agree with this, I have observed the same. Unfortunately, in this sense technic as a building system is like a chaotic system (in the mathematical sense): a small change has long reaching consequences. This is because the technic pieces often do not form proper sub-systems, for example certain parts don't come in various lengths, so you can't just offset something by one stud, you need to redesign the whole assembly. Often, this single-length property of parts introduces a set of constraints that are very hard to satisfy simultaneously. For example, suspension arms, links, CV joints, U-joints, springs, certain types of connectors, they all come in one, maybe two sizes. Also, motors have fixed sizes. If you want to put together a drivetrain and suspension, all those size constraints need to be taken into account, which often conflict. If only Lego produced such parts in multiple lengths, things would become much easier, and much denser and simpler builds would become possible, because it would be much easier to satisfy those sets of constraints. But TLG keeps avoiding such problems and does not introduce missing parts. They don't make much tight small builds, and when they do, they don't make it function rich to avoid the problem (thinking about RWD Ford Raptor). It's a pity, because the building system could be made so much more useful with such additions. But enough of ranting.. was just good to know someone else also realized this

Universal 4x4 off-roader
gyenesvi replied to Zerobricks's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
I like this compact design a lot. The way the motors are installed is quite nice, giving way to a simple gearbox and overall drivetrain. Let's see over time how the diff in the gearbox handles all that power. I think 4 motors and 2 Buwizzes are kind of a sweet spot, that's the most I would ever put in one model, both because of not owning more :) and because of considering quite probable wear of parts, but at the same time that seems to give high enough speed and a lot of power to really become fun to drive. As for avoiding grass to enter the gearbox, what I did and plan to do is instead of covering the bottom with another stud thickness of panels, I just put some duct tape at the bottom (given that the gears don't stick out from the bottom-most layer, which is not that difficult to achieve). This way, I can also use the duct tape (maybe also a layer of cart-board under it) as a skid plate that I don't need to worry about being scratched. -

Axle Collection Thread
gyenesvi replied to efferman's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
Thanks for the image. Yes, well, at this height it is certainly possible, but sure it will look like a monster truck :) Also, I like to keep the middle part free for minimal interior like seats. A pickup is a good idea, because those are generally longer, so it would be possible to rearrange things and put the motors in the middle section fairly low, and the battery can go in the bed. Still the front springs are the big limiting factor for the height. One tip that came out of my experimentation: if the springs are mounted as they are on the front (but maybe lower), then you don't need 4 links, the upper 2 are not so important, since the spring holds the axle against rotation. On the other hand a panhard rod will be required to prevent sideways motion of the axle. -
I can see that you are not really afraid of 'manufacturing' all those parts for yourself that Lego forgot to give us :) (that 1stud shorter (or longer) control arm would be good to have, glad someone else also realizes that). Anyways, for many structural problems, flip-flop beams in all sizes can provide answers, as they allow connections in perpendicular directions, it is often possible to form-lock stuff in a smaller space so that it cannot come apart in a certain direction. Since this won't be a pure lego solution anyway, I suggest you buy a bunch of CADA flip-flop beams on Ali Express. They are available in all sizes as a pack for about $15 in black, something like 10 pieces each size, I have bought one pack for such experimental builds. About the suspension travel, I don't understand why you expect 1 stud, the rubber pieces are 2 studs long, one half is fixed, the other half can compress 1/2 studs max. Anyways, I like your direction of thinking with quite clean structure, it would be awesome if it was possible to pull off in a stable enough way for the scale. BTW I'd definitely try to put two motors to where those tanks are on the sides and keep the cabin space for seats. Also the steering will need a way to route to the front axle in a way that does not collide with the drivetrain.

Pybricks Q&A
gyenesvi replied to Pybricks's topic in LEGO Technic, Mindstorms, Model Team and Scale Modeling
This video reinforces my feeling that it should be possible to connect an Xbox Series controller (and some others) directly. @Pybricks, is there a chance to have such BLE capable controllers available for direct connection in Pybricks? This could be a killer feature that would make Pybricks really attractive for the lego RC guys. Thanks for this link, now I understand, it is only the basic UART communication protocol that's provided, and I could invent my own app specific control protocol on top of that. Makes sense, since what we are doing with Pybricks is actually programming part of the FW.
